(Article not important as such) but posting for the archive record, because government site arbitrarily remove files from their servers.

Earlier UPSC had released the list of marks for 2012’s Toppers. Click me.
But that list did not contain marks in individual papers (i.e. essay, GS1, GS2, Optional 1 and Optional 2). RTI adventures did not bear fruits.

However, Personnel Ministry has released full marksheet of all 2012’s toppers- including their marks in individual paper and category, on their website. (PDF quality is very poor by the way). Link given below.

Some observations

Since PDF is in terribly low quality of 40 pages. Haven’t done any detailed analysis. But from superficial viewing, I observed following:

Lowest marks in Essay by a topper =42/200.

Highest marks in Essay by a topper =125/200.

Optionals

By and large, most toppers are given respectable scores in individual papers of optional II. (Given the tough scaling in 2012, ‘respectable-score’ means any ‘three digit’ score out of 300 in an optional paper.)

Most of the two-digit scores are observed in Paper I of optional I. Some notable ones are:

Name*Marks in Paper I Optional-I out of 300Rank
Sujatha31~300
Surendra36~400
Ajey31~500
Balram24~850
Hansraj29~970

Enough material to come up with new conspiracy theories about scaling process.
[*No disrespect meant to any of those toppers, table given only for illustration.]

  1. Please pay attention to marks scored by 3rd ranker Stuti Charan – 247/300 Paper 1 – Botany!! Never thought it was humanely possible. Hope its not an error while entering marks. Is this a record score? Can UPSC upload her paper?

  2. very good post.. relevant analysis

  3. Thanks Mrunal…………….

  4. pls give me some idea abt the syllabus of investigator post by SSC. the qualification is any graduation with maths or statistics or economics.

  5. Hie,
They have not provided the marks for language papers… why so…?
At least they must have provided the minimum marks for qualified candidates in language papers…
Mrunal if you can help on this matter… then it will be of immense help…

    1. In Mid-Dec 2013, I had filed RTI seeking minimum passing marks in english +regional papers in the previous mains exams. Awaiting reply from UPSC.

  6. What is mean Scaling Process?

  7. I can see Stuti Charan got 247 out of 300 in her optional-1 paper.
How is it possible ? Is there any scaling done ?

    1. how it is not possible to get 247 out 300..tell me

  8. thanx mrunal..:).

  9. mrunal sir can u give detail of individual optional paper

  10. what does CD stand for in the marklist?

    1. must be subject code

  11. Any idea how cutoff will play this year. This year question paper were bit lengthy any idea what is the average attempt of the candidates….

  12. sir namaste
please tell, why the head of loksabha is called Speaker while that of rajya sabha Chairman.
    thank you

  13. HI Mrunal,

It would be good if you could please give some analysis on the same..may be on the variance on the optionals mark, trend of increasing marks in interview, highly uneven marks in optional, or may be is it really that optional like literature, Law etc. are on the higher side of the marks, while PubAd, psucho etc. have suffered…I know the Deduction of anything concrete is a futile task, but still more/better information is always good for decision making..:)

  14. the coloumn “CD” refers to the optional subject code… by comparing the codes and subjects of some toppers I know that :-
    25 is commerce-accountancy,
    26 is economics ,
    27 is electrical engineering,
    28 is geography,
    30 is history,
    31 is law,
    32 is management,
    37 is political science,
    38 is psychology,
    39 is sociology,
    40 is zoology,
    42 is animal husbandry,
    44 is Public Admin,
    45 is medical science,
    54 is hindi language,
    58 is malayalam ,

Hope this helps people in analysing scores.

      1. 21 and 22 must be agriculture and botany.

    1. nice effort soorya..thanks

    2. what’s that cen ?

  15. 247/300

When the paper of a certain optional comes very tough and if a person(topper) does well in it then his raw scores are upscaled. On the other hand the person on the lower end of the distribution has his marks downscaled.rank 3 might have one exceptionally well in the botany paper (raw score 200+) and after upscaling her marks got to 247.At the same time you will be not be surprised to find pathetic scores in botany(17,23,43 etc). These are scores of people whose raw marks are around 70-100.So if one is taking unconventional subjects like botany, zoology, animal husbandry, engineering etc make sure that you remain among the toppers.Otherwise you will be at the receiving end of upsc scaling system. On the other hand if you are the topper, rejoice! your marks will be not be downscaled at least and there is probability that it may get upscaled by 30-40 marks.

Scaling doesnt adversely affect popular optionals like sociology, public administration, history where the deviation of scores is much lesser.so in these optionals difference in scores are COMPARATIVELY not huge unlike botany(low scores like 14 and highest of 247).

    1. UPSC never explained their scaling system so cant trust on your info. But its totally unfair to reduce marks of student who got around 50-100 marks & upscale marks of toppers ..

      1. @ ROHAN AGREE WITH YOU…WHAT SHRAVAN TOLD IS BASED ON STATE LEVEL COMMISSION..AS I KNOW THE SAME PROCESS IS APPLICABLE IN RAS..

    2. I dont think that this is the case. I got royally [email protected]@@@D in Electrical paper 1. I attampted just for 35 marks. But i got 37. Whereas I attempted like 200+ marks in Geography paper 1. I got 47. Other than these all papers were above the average. Hence could not get call for interview. ;(

  16. I got 78 in botany paper when i was expecting at least 120+ though my paper had not gone well.My marks were downscaled.

  17. what is cen in the marksheer ?

  18. 247/300……inhe dakhakar to yehi lugata h ki bache hue ake optional ko bhi hata dena chahiyea……..

  19. if two persons are get the same total how they ranked one person higher ? what is the criteria here?

    1. The Person with Higher age ranked first.

    2. Same marks candidates are further ranked with the marks they have scored in Essay + GS I & II + Personality Test
. You may have a check by yourself.

  20. Please share remaining subject codes Mrunal..
