Prologue
- In the last article, we saw how to handle Ch1 and Ch30 of India 2014 || Bharat 2014 (+sample MCQs)
- In thisĀ article, we see how to handle environment related segment from: IYB (Ch1, Ch8) and 12th FYP (ch4, Ch7).
Approaching Environment Biodiversity
Total four stages
Stage I | NCERT, NIOS and Mrunal.org/ENB |
Stage II |
|
stage III | follow-up from books/net for whatever GA/GK/theory is left e.g. list of parks sanctuaries etc. |
Stage IV | Continuous notes making from newspapers, magazines. (This stage must be started ASAP, even if other stages haven’t started.) |
Three prerequisites before touching IYB for Environment
- When it comes to international treaties/kyoto/Nagoya etc. the India Yearbook and 12th FYP only give bolbachchan type coverage= not much useful in MCQs (or even for recalling points in mains). So first read the treaties and summits given on Mrunal.org/ENB
- NIOS material for Environment and Biodiversity. Religiously mug it up for prelims.
- NCERT following chapters related to Environment Biodiversity (EnB). [yes you need to study BOTH NCERT and NIOS for UPSC prelims, as far as EnB topic is concerned]
Both NCERT and NIOS, free download available at Mrunal.org/download
CLASS | SUBJECT | NCERT CHAPTERS related to EnB |
6 | geography | 8 |
7 | geo. | 1 to 6 |

10 | Geo. | 2 |
sci. | 14 to 16 | |
11 | geo(Physical) | 15 and 16 |
geo (India) | 4 and 5 | |
economy | 9 (Sustainable development) | |
12 | Biology | 13 to 16 |
chemistry | 14 |
Assuming that youāre done with pre-requisite #1, 2 and 3ā¦welcome back.
Overall Chapter 12 (Environment) and 23 (planning-subtopic Environment) give following details
- Various organizations, bodies
- List of policies and laws.
- Terms/ schemes.
Although in all three things, youāll have to do āFollowupā by digging google. Because the data given in the book alone is not sufficient to handle MCQ/Mains. But you need to read the book, to prepare the base.

[FAQ] Do I need to buy new edition IF I already have 2013?
A question asked by many readers, āI already have IYB 2013, do I need to buy 2014ās edition?ā
Answer is NO. (Observe the change list, then I elaborate)
Changes in Ch1. Land and people
- First six pages are almost the same.
- Census: data is updated.
Changes in Ch12. Environment
- Compressed forest resource and survey
- Compressed environment conservation
- Compressed CBD, Biological diversity act
- Removed genetic engineering approval committee
- Removed COP-MOP-5, AICOPTAX
- Removed forest policy
- Compressed project tiger and project elephant
- Removed regulatory acts under animal welfare
- Compressed EIA
- Compressed CPCB
- Compressed E-waste management
- Removed chemical safety
- Compressed Bio-medical waste management
- Compressed national river conservation directorate
- Compressed ramsar convention national wetland conservation program
- Added centralĀ wetland regulatory authority
- Compressed Environmental research and NNRMS from two pages to just two paragraphs
- Removed statistical cell and NGO cell
- Compressed Climate change and removed COP-16
- Removed- IPCC , INCCA, UK Collaboration and many other miscellaneous topics
Changes in Ch30. State and UT
- Updated population data as per Census 2011
- Updated names of governor, CM, chief Secretary, + a few state schemes here and there.Ā (It also lists Kejriwal as Delhi PM- meaning pretty latest printed book.)
- but other than that, Most of the static content is identical to the previous edition.
[^ Iām yet to compare remaining chapters in detail. But they also run on same pattern: lot of data either compressed or removed.]
Now coming back to the question
Ā āI already have 2013 edition of India Yearbook, so, do I need to buy 2014ās edition?ā
My answer/advice/opinion is āNOā because:
- They did āCompressā a lot of topics, eliminated many outdated topics, but havenāt āupdatedā the topics much.
- The way things are moving under UPSC’s Backbreaking era, you’ll have to dig net, newspaper and magazines- for almost every term, scheme, policy, act, bill, irrespective of how up-to-date your Ā IYB is. Therefore, IYB’s main use is “base” material, and as the base material- it hasn’t updated much between 2013 vs 2014’s edition.
- Census data updated- but you can easily get it from net. Those ten new pages alone don’t justify the need for dishing out another 250/- rupees.
- In almost all chapters, the IR/HRD related data is still from 2012ās era one and same. Even in above COP/UNFCC/Kyoto/RIO+20 etc. summits.
- Whatever few things are newly added, you can dig through PIB/Net (as per the list/tables given in above article).
- I believe you already have used highlighter/ballpen/margin-notes on the 2013ās edition for quick reading/revision. So If you get new 2014ās edition again= youāll have to repeat the same exercise on those 1000+ pages again = not worth the cost:benefit. (because data hardly new- only page numbers changed.)
In short, if you already have IYB-2013 then not much point in getting IYB-2014: your 250-350 rupees are better spent buying in some other books or stationary.

I have been preparing with lucent as my base for general studies for now ( just laying foundation). You have made an excellent point in the geography analysis of IYB. Without atlas or any maps for refrence, retention of information has been pretty difficult. Gues I will have to buy the NCERT textbooks now.
Sir mujhe ncert ki book nshi mil rahi hai pless help me in
hindi
First of all, great job Mrunal.
Please tell me how to prepare for flora and fauna species. There are always couple of questions (at least) regarding endangered/Extinct and which all are found in India. Help regarding this topic will be highly appreciated.. Thanx
In the reading list for EnB, you have mentioned, NCERT chapter 8, from geography. But NCERT book for class 8 does not have 8 chapters. The total book (Resource and Development) has 6 chapters.
what abt ques 9.from iyb..how come its option c ? please clarify
there is no chapter no#8 in Geography class 8 which you mentioned in Environment section NCERT. Can you please correct it sir?
Sirji awesome article ..perfect..doing FYP like this was rather fun :)
I have a small suggestion: given the fact you will be doing Economic survey in the comming month : instead of rewriting the entire thing again it could be done in a similar way (page number:imp MCQ/fodder)+references from ES 13-14 and ur precious articles..this way it will save a lot of your precious time and ultimately benefit us…as then u can do some hard to understand topics like of diplomacy (Ukraine,Iraq etc) ..Economic survey is there with all of us moreover last year’s ES is hard to forget given the fact it was so lucidly explained +its comprehensive coverage and thus doing the same exercise again in my openion will kill a lot of your precious time..
I hope the suggestion (if at all worthy) will be considered .
Thank you.
Hi Mrunal,
The NIOS material for Envt & Bio-diversity seems to be full of factual inaccuracies. Here are a few samples:
– “Scientists believe that the big bang occurred about 15 to 20 billion years ago. The
huge collection of dust and gases then began to spin. As it spun faster and faster, the centre
became very hot. It became the Sun.” This explanation is laughable to say the least.
– “Mars (Mangal) is also close to earth. It is called the red planet. It has 95% carbon
monoxide”. Mars’ atmosphere is primarily composed of Carbon Dioxide
-“Neptune (Varun) is much smaller than earth, cold and
dark with its surface coated with frozen methane.” It is primarily Hydrogen & Helium. Methane is present in relatively small amounts .
All this in just the first Chapter. I am very skeptical about the accuracy of the rest of the material. Should we still continue to refer the NIOS material? Or should we stick to the NCERT Class 12 Biology Text book?

Satish
