Introduction

Q. Tell us something about yourself, your family, when and why did you enter in this field of competitive exams?

Hello friends, I am Mihir Patel and completed my engineering in 2011. After completion of my graduation, I went Delhi in mid july for 3 months to take the coaching of philosophy then I came back and stayed at SPIPA. I gave total three attempts in 2012 ,2013 ,2014. In both my previous attempts I reached up to the interview and in this third attempt I am able to clear the exam.since completion of engineering , I got the job in MNC with huge package, but I decided to leave all this personal benefits for civil services and to serve the nation and society

Electronic Vs Paper material

Q. In recent times, there is spur in electronic material- blogs, sites, pdfs, RSS-feeds. Many aspirants feel bogged down by this information overload. So, how much do you rely on electronic material and how much on the paper material (Books, newspapers)? If possible narrate a typical day in your studylife. What is your style of preparation (e.g. I continue making notes no matter what I’m reading, I just read multiple times but don’t maintain notes, I make mindmaps on computer …or xyz style)

Generally I used to read paper material but most of the materials were downloaded from the internet. Generally I Believe that general study is like an ocean, that’s why I did not make any note for G.S. but I prepared a comprehensive note for my subject philosophy approx. of 5000 pages.  Details of Websites I used during my preparation are as following:

Tempo and style

Q. People know what books and syllabus points are to be prepared. But most of them lack consistency in their preparation. So, how do you keep study momentum going on? How do you fight against the mood swings and distractions?

Friends just remember that continuity and consistency is the key to succeed this exam. I failed two times in this exam but I never lost faith on my self and even get back to the reading on the result day of failure. So keep reading with positive attitude.   It may take time but UPSC always appreciates hard work.

Struggle of a Senior player

After 1-2 failures in any competitive exam, a phase of mental saturation comes. The person knows the booklist, he knows what is necessary to succeed. But it doesn’t yield result. My question are two:

Q1. How did you survive through this mental prison and what’re your words of wisdom to other senior players? If any specific inspirational incident(s), please share.

It was not tough for me to survive during the failure time because of SPIPA, Ahmedabad. The institute has provided me all the support whenever necessary that is either mental or economical.

Q2. What went wrong in your previous attempt? What changes did you make in this current attempt?

My presentation style was not up to the mark in previous two attempts. In this attempt I worked hard to improve my answer writing skill.  Answer writing skill is necessary for mains exam now a days so please work hard on that.

Don’t guess option randomly if you don’t have any knowledge of the question. Just leave that question blank.

Q. in GS-Prelims 2014, there was unusual questions from environment and agriculture portion. If you were to give the attempt again in 2015, what new strategy / books / sources would you focus?

Friends if u feel that I have taken amit sir’s name many times then please don’t feel that I am doing his promotion. But I respect him a lot from the bottom of my heart and he guided me all the time during the examination process. Even I was thinking to drop this philosophy in this attempt but sir insisted me to keep this subject and I secured this rank due to this subject only.

Just Take this Subject Blindly if u have logical mind set and if you don’t like to mug up things. I am sure you will love this subject

Insecurity about profile

Q. Many candidates prepare sincerely but constantly live under fear about ‘profile insecurity’. I’m not from a big college, I’m not from English medium, and I don’t have work-experience. What if they ask some stressful questions in the interview about this? Did you suffer from such insecurities? What is your message to these candidates?

I am from gujarati medium school and my school is also an average level school. If I can achieve top rank any sincere candidate  with any profile can achieve this with the combination of hard and smart work.
