Academic Qualification

To apply for UPSC Civil Services (IAS/IPS) Examination, a candidate….

  1. Must be a graduate. No minimum %, grade or CGPA required in college. (But don’t prepare UPSC by neglecting college because in RBI/CAT-exams they consider college marks)
  2. There are Toppers with ATKT, failures in college/school exams. UPSC doesn’t care. They only need final graduation certi/marksheet.
  3. Undergraduate in last year, last semester can apply.
  4. American degrees valid but have to get equivalent cert. from AIU.
  5. Distance education degree valid- IF recognized by UGC/AICTE/any Law
  6. MBBS must have completed internship before UPSC Interview-stage comes.

  • Age is counted on the 1st August of the given year.
  • Physical Disabled candidates’ age limits: PH-Gen: 42, PH-OBC (non-Creamy): 45 years; PH-SC/ST: 47 years. This is cumulative ST ex-serviceman who was disabled: 32 +5 (ST) +5 (Ex serviceman) + PH (10)=52 years. But such cumulative effect will apply till maximum upper age limit 56 years, as per this DoPT Notification.
  • * PH (GEN | OBC) = 9 attempts while PH (SC | ST) = Unlimited Attempts, till upper age.
  • J&K Domicile OR Ex-serviceman: addl. +5 years| Attempt depend on category.


  • Apply online: 7th Feb to 3rd March 2018

    • You’ve to indicate optional subject in online Prelim-form. You can’t change it afterwards during Mains form.
    • Marksheet, Caste Certi not required at this stage.

  • Stage1- Prelims / CSAT: 3rd June, 2018

    • Multiple choice Question (MCQ) Test. Two papers 1) General Studies 2) Aptitude. No optional paper here.
    • Question paper is set in English and Hindi.
    • if you apply online but remain absent in prelims, then your attempt is not counted.

  • Stage2- Mains: 29th Sep. 2018 onwards (five days)

    • When you clear prelims, You’ll have to fill up a new separate (online) form called “Detailed Application form” (DAF).
    • In this online DAF-form, Your optional subject will be pre-selected from prelim form, hence you can’t change.
    • Along with DAF-you’ll have to give proof of graduation, caste, PH.
    • Mains contains Seven Descriptive Papers; including one optional subject paper.

  • Stage3- Interview, Dates undecided

    Can be given in any language. But advisable to give in Hindi/English otherwise 1) Leaves Poor impression 2) Translator eats up time/ reduces impact of your answer.

How to start Prelim Preparation?

  1. Coaching / Delhi-Stay is NOT essential to clear Prelims. Many toppers managed without coaching, by self study!
  2. First, Start with NCERT Textbooks Topicwise (Free Download)
  3. Observe Previous years Topicwise Papers; so unnecessarily Time is not wasted in wrong direction.

  1. Sir,can I start preparation from zero for CSE 2018. I m a SC candidate and 34 yrs old. I m decided for 2019 in Hindi medium but I want prepare from now. Actually I want a result in 2019 so I m preparing for that from now. I confused between my two thoughts one says that it will be better that I concentrate on step by step study for CSE 2019 and forget about 2018 but in another hand I thought I should take a chance in 2018. not for mains but only to judge my capability for prelims.
    Please suggest me that what will be right for me. Is it possible to crack prelims in just 164 days. I know that prelims is just qualifying but I wish to qualify it. If it is not possible than I concentrate on my regular study for 2019.

  8. Sir I am 23 years now and i want to give upsc 2018 yet I am not well prepared for this year but i want to see my capability through giving the 2018 on the one hand , but I also want to prepare for this through the approach of step by step and thorough studying on the other hand. By self study

    1. Hi,

      Kindly go through the previous year prelims question paper. It’s available in their website. Then you can base your preparation on the current trend of paper as well as the syllabus. Do not study for prelims and mains separately prepare together may be during the last two months leading to prelims you can concentrate only on prelims preparation.

      Optional subject for your mains should be chosen carefully. Go through questions previous years question paper for subjects you are interested in and then select one. As far as your communication skills are concerned it can be improved with practice. Do your best. My best wishes for your success with this examination.

  15. सर UPSC CS के लिए ex servicemen की उम्र किस प्रकार निर्धारित होती है। जैसे ex servicemen अगर 40 की उम्र में रिटायर होता है तो वह age relaxation claim कर सकता है।

    1. U can choose either Kannada or English as ur medium for IAS Mains. U cannot choose two medium of language for different papers. I hope u understood.

Hi deepak…please do concentrate on 2018 cse prelims…because you know that preliminary exams are qualifying nature exams…so just try your best for cse prelims…after the exam you will be know that you would selected(or)not…so after the prelim exam go for mains study…just try it…it will work out…My best wishes

  27. Hello Sir/Madam,
    Am a final year architecture student. I presently have 2 backlogs and Am in a dilemma if am capable enough to prepare for civils. When it comes to my will power to do hard work, I want to give my 100% to achieve the goal. But my query Is will my backlogs become a problem while my selection in prelims/mains. Will the selection team consider my backlogs even though I pass them after writing supplementery exams?
    Kindly clarify this doubt of mine.
