Before starting CAT preparation or dreaming to get admission in IIMs, one must take three oaths.
Paheli Kasam [First Oath]
There are two types of CAT aspirants.
- Those who’re sharp in maths so they just keep doing maths 24/7 because it feels “good“, but don’t touch the English portion. (Vocabulary, Sentence Correction, Reading Comprehension)
- Those who’re weak in maths (myself included), so they just keep doing maths 24/7 in hope to master it.
Both approaches are wrong – CAT is not made up of maths only. There exists a section II (30 questions) on English! So be well prepared for both.So you first oath must be:
I’ll prepare well for both sections and won’t become a quant-maniac..
Dursi Kasam [Second Oath]
From Auguest to November, Most CAT aspirants donot prepare GK, Current affairs, group discussion or profile based interview questions.
They wait until they recieve the interview calls from IIMs and other assorted MBA factories. This is second mistake, you start preparing for GDPI only in January-February and your interview is in March – you cannot do justice to every topic in such a short time. So daily newspaper reading, business GK etc is must throughout the year. And by Newspapers, I mean The Hindu or Indianexpress only.
Second Oath:
I’ll read newspapers Daily. + I’ll note down the difficult words in a diary to expand my vocabulary.
Teesri Kasam [Third Oath]
Many CAT aspirants start feeling guilty and insecure because of their pathetic scores in 10,12 and college graduation, lack of extra curricular certificates, no work experiance etc.etc.etc. It affects their performance indirectly, during the interview. You must remember that there are people who get admissions in IIMs, despite all of above shortcomings. (Just try to score as high as you can in CAT, to compensate whatever few marks you’re loosing the “profile-weightage” and be thoroughly prepared for GDPI.) If your 10,12 and graduation marks are bogus, you cannot go back in time machine and fix it. So please stop feeling guilty or inferior for that.
And thus, the third and final Oath:
I shall not feel guilty about myself for whatever I’ve done or haven’t done.
Now talking about the CAT booklist and strategy. Google search will throw up all the “ideal strategies” for CAT preparation, but many of them are just ‘ideal but impractical‘.
So here I’m sharing my “ragtag” strategy for CAT success (or atleast getting 95+ percentile), based on my misadventures in CAT-2011.
The Beginning
I gave first CAT in 2011 and was totally (and that means totally) lame in aptitude stuff.
Just 4-months of preparation and coaching from TIME: 2 hours lectures, 3 days per week. (Not a fan of coaching myself but given the short amount of time before exam and absolutely no idea about how to prepare for CAT, I had no choice.)
Anyways,
I did not
The so called “ideal strategies” on google, prescribe following but I didnot do any of it.
- I Didnot read any philosophy books, novels for “Reading Comprehension” practice. (there is hardly any time left to breath, let alone browse through Alchemist and similar stuff)
- I Didnot prepare any dictionary / list for vocabulary.
- I Didnot try any method for ‘speed-reading’.
- Had totally bogus AIMCAT scores 6, 9 etc, never did ‘post-analysis’ of questions and later stopped giving them altogether, as they were wasting my time and hurting my confidence.
- Skipped trigonometry, coordinate geometry, games n tournaments and any topic that I couldn’t grasp on first two tries or anything that wouldnot go in my long term memory.
- Didnot do much arithmatic series and logarithm. because most of them would require application of some special ‘magic-move’, which won’t go my long term memory.
- Am still confused about Chinese remainder theorem.
- Skipped most of Pagalguy quant/LR threads & discussions. (Well most of their sums go above my head anyways.)
- Can’t do much speed-maths or mental calculation of percentages for DI/Quant.
- Can’t solve most quant-problems without filling up half page+ calculation: Was scolded many times by the coach that I use pen ‘too-much’ for CAT standards.
- Don’t know squares upto 50.
- Can remember multiplication table upto 25, but 13,14,17,18,19,23 still give nightmares.
But I did
- I did solve Arun Sharma’s book on Quantitive Aptitude (TMH publication) (done twice)
- I did solve and Sarvesh Kumar’s Quantam CAT (Arihant Publication) (done twice)
- I did solve Demystifying Number System by Nishit K Sinha (Pearson Publication). (done twice)
- I did read Word power made easy by Norman Louis (not done twice, only once.)
- I did all questions from booklets & handouts given from the coaching class (done twice).
- Please note: IF you’re not a student of TIME coaching class, you can still get their study material at a very convinient price from Flipkart. Here is the link: http://www.flipkart.com/author/time
- I noted down the methods of solving questions (weight-misuse by shopkeeper, allegation etc) from them and kept revising the ‘moves’.
- Last 15 days before exam: only did online sectional tests @TIME website. (not Aimcats).
- Even in those online sectional-tests, I would get Quant/DI/sentence correction answers incorrect most of the time, but it taught me the hard way about :
- which questions to attempt and what to skip altogether because you get in wrong everytime (sentence correction in my case)
- and which questions take too much time to solve (LR sitting arrangement, DI graphs in my case).
- Also whenever and wherever I solved any question (be it maths or english grammaer), If I made mistake or had trouble solving it, then I would note it down in my “diary of mistakes for future revision.
- Similarly I would note down the difficult words I came across during daily-newspaper reading and find their meaning using a free software called “Wordweb” – and noted down those meanings in a diary.
- Total 3 full-scape notebooks filled up in this exercise. 2 for maths, 1 for English grammar & vocabulary. Kept revising it in last days.
Finally My CAT-2011 result
- I got overall 96.00 percentile : Attempt 44/60
- QA: 90.41 : Attempt 17/30
- VA: 97.05 : Attempt 27/30
- Anyways 96 percentile feels good only for a few days – bragging in front of friends and relatives, otherwise 96 is as bogus as 55 percentile – can’t get you admission / interview call in any big IIMs. (Especially when you don’t have those fancy paper certificates to prove work-ex and extra-curricular activities and no good marks in 10, 12th and college and GDPI turns into a fish market.) So try to work harder than I did.

All the best to all CAT aspirants of 2012.

Hi,
Iam Currently working and just a month left for the main exam, i have finished the portion completely, the material given by TIME , but still iam not confident as i have not cleared any Cutoff’s of the AIMCAT’s i really dont know how to prepare myself with this little TIME left… Please help so atleast i can improve on my scores.
Don’t let that AIMCAT demoralize you.
first do the sums / questions from Arun Sharma / TIME booklets
then goto TIME website’s student portal and do all the sectional tests from that topic and review all the answers, explanations and note down the mistakes, shortcuts etc.
I always Find this puzzling especially in Verbal And DI all the answers i take to be rite, especially in the Sentence completion and para jumbling, turn out Wrong.. and this fact demoralises me a lot.. and now i have literally stopped taking AIm CATs.. please guide how i can arrive at the correct choices for these questions as iam always left with 2 choices.
Can U suggest an effective way in which i can arrange the order of the questions that i want to attempt..
Congratulation Mrunal.
and thanks for sharing your strategies.
btw what do you do now? have you joined some IIM….and which dot net language you use to maintain this site…..and again, how much time you spend everyday to keep your site updated?…
btw, u r doing great job!!
Hey bro , what happened did you convert any IIM’s ?
Those who want to practice online may visit, Lofoya.com: http://lofoya.com/Aptitude-Questions-And-Answers/Algebra/intro.htm
Mrunal Sir ,
I am having my CAT exam on 15th oct , n after giving aimcat , i feel as if i hv to start everything from beginning .. i scored 65%ile last year n aiming to score atleast 88+.
can u suggest me what shud be done in the coming 20 days , so as to secure the desired percentile …
plz do reply .. thanks !!!
Assuming that you’ve Arun Sharma and or TIME booklets.
Go chapterwise. First you read the theory (from both books) and do the sums from both books and then goto your student portal on time website and do sectional tests given in it. (not AIMCAT, only sectional tests.)
I suggest you do all sectional tests on that site, and afterwards check explanation given on every questions and review your mistakes, note them in diary.
If you’ve Sarvesh Kumar’s book then do the Geometry portion from it, thoroughly.
All the best.

Hello sir, 2009 engg pass out. Gave 2011 mains. & cleared crpf ac 2010. Rank 99. Joining order not yet received. Meanwhile I joined for masters in economics at madras school of economics as I skipped 2012 attempt anticipating a changing pattern. A package of 6 to 7 lpa is possible here. Cat date is on 16th. Considering the gap of 3 yrs is it possible to get into top 20 leaving iims aside. & what is the package in such schools. Could this waiting period of crpf order be taken into account for bridging the 3 yr gap.
Sir, your site is really of tremendous use and very informative. Please do something for GMAT preparation
Can I use the same studyplan and books to prepare for other management exams like mat, xat, Aita etc… I am not taking any coaching like time or other. Please reply soon…
Hie Mrunal.
I am planning to give GMAT. i am doing a business so i dont have much time for classes and all, so doing self prepration, wanted to know whether the books which you have mentioned for CAT Quant and Verbal is enough for GMAT prep also.

Hello Sir,
I want to ask you one question that if i will do preparation for CAT exam then this preparation is enough to clear the SSC exam or do i have prepare separately for SSC?
Please explain me sir.
If anyone has any idea about please rely.
thanks.
CAT preparation is sufficient to clear SSC exam but some topics have to be separately prepared (because they donot appear in CAT) for example non-verbal reasoning and GK

Hi Mrunal bhai, I exhausted all my 4 UPSC attempts long back in 2006. Since then, I am working in private sector. Have done reasonable well in terms of salary package in the last 5 years or so. But being a bookworm, which one invariably becomes after UPSC misadventures, I have been wanting to do an executive MBA from ISB, Hyderabad, to improve my job prospects. But what has dissuaded me is the fear of Maths. Honestly, I have been an Arts student throughput and always dreaded Maths. Now, I do not want to get into something in which i know that half of the questions will be on a subject which i do not understand a wee bit! Anyway, i still feel i may crack the exam provided i work hard on maths and improve my self confidence.
Can u advice on the following:
1. Given my academic background of Arts, is it advisable to do MBA in the first place?
2. If yes, then how to overcome the fear of Maths. My self-doubt is so much that I sometimes believe that even a 3rd class student will be better in maths than me.
Thanks.
Baldev Bhai,
1. MBA will be good in your case. There are plenty of good/reputed colleges apart from ISB also. please check with pagalguy rankings. and If you’re interested, also look for upcoming RBI Grade “B” officer’s exam.
2. CAT (prometric) is also using “Backbreaking” move just like UPSC. So nowadays Math stuff is not as hard as it used to be 3 years ago.
3. Since you’re working, coaching fees won’t be a big issue- therefore, I suggest you join a well reputed CAT coaching institute of your city (TIME/CL/IMS etc usually have night batches for working professionals). Never miss a lecture, and you’ll be a master of aptitude in no time. Sooner you join is better, because then you’ll have more time to practice. CAT is all about practice.
All the best.
thanks alot sir…..
its really very helpful….awesome work
Hi Mrunal sir,

Depends on the quality of faculty, in the given city.
Institutes like Time, Careerlauncher have setup offices in almost every city. Better ask some senior players in your city / ask on pagalguy.com
Yes it’ll help.
But BankPO also has section on GK/Current affairs, marketing, computer. So you’ve to prepare those topics separately.
Thank u sooooo much Sir.
1.As you have told me that i have to prepare separately for GK/Current affairs, marketing, computer then Please suggest me some good books to prepare these subjects as well.
2.Do i have take separate coaching to prepare these subjects or by preparing through books is enough?
marketing, computer topics are covered in IBPS Manuals. There are truckload of books sold separately too, for those two topics. (S.Chand/Kiran Prakashan etc)
GK/current=competitive magazines, newspapers, NCERT.
no need.
Thanks Mrunal for the suggestions. Have already started working on them. And yes, you are doing a fabulous job. I am sure had you made it to IAS, you would have been a fantastic civil servant as you have the qualities of compassion coupled with astute intelligence. It is the country’s loss that they couldnt have you right up there, rest assured! God Bless brother.
Mrunal. You are Great.Though I am not financially strong,I feel a great sense of confidence to crack UPSC just by following your blog.Your blog might have been a very great help just like me to many of the aspirants..Hope this blog would give one & all a very smooth journey throughout their preparation.Wish You & All..A very very all the best.
aisa hai to shayad har bandha jo mrunal bhai ke blog refer karta hai
wo zaroor IAS banega
may be yes but you have to follow all the ways regularlyhe told for cracking this exam…..
thank u soo much Mrunal sir.

practice. and observe the techniques given in Arun Sharma.
TRICKY MATHEMATICS of PRATIYOGITA SAHITYA is also good
hello sir ..
can you guide on gd by writing a brief article as GD and speaking abality is as important as written exam (cds ,ssc, cat ,and others also.) so think about this point also sir..
Respected Sir,
Will u please suggest some good books for CAT apart from preparation material provided by classes and some of the websites wer i can practise mock tests..apart from AIMCAT
I think pagalguy.com has some dedicate segment for tests. also try google, there are plenty of sites giving free mocks.
regarding books
Arun Sharma has three set of books: Quant, DI, VA recently updated.
Pearson (Nishith Kumar)
There is one BS Sajjival and plenty of other small time authors.
But given the difficulty and trend of last two papers (2011 and 2012), it’d be an overkill.Just stick to Arun Sharma, Sarvesh Kumar, more than sufficient, calculate those books twice or thrice, maintain diary of mistakes/shortcut, and you’ll do fine. At most TIME’s books on CAT topics (released by Pearson under brandname trisha/trisha).
Good luck.
hello sir, i have to give snap test on this 16th dec. kindly tel me the strategy for its prep. due to some reasons i could only start my prep from 21st nov only, so plzz help me here
hi hws is mba in power management?
hello sir,
could you please tell me to study first quant ant then verbal or both at a time….plz could you help me with this.
whatever suits you. parallel preparation or separate preparation.
But you should start reading newspapers and maintaining a diary of difficult words from today itself.
Took aimcat: awwwww! The questions seems were falling 4m sky. Time and again aimcat keeps me low wenever i fly high with my preprn. Does aimcat per4mance hv ny serious implications on cat score? Sceptical about?. Smbady plz help…
Nope.
CAT moves in different direction: It has tricky questions yes, but unsolvable questions: not many.
While in AIMCAT, they usually setup lot of unsolvable questions unless you’re ready for lengthy calculation or complex arrangement (football matches etc) or absolute memorization of some trivial concept on function, graph, logerithm, trignometry, coordinate geometry otherwise you cannot proceed with the question.
so don’t worry much, keep practicing. don’t let your AIMCAT scores demotivate you.
Thankyou sir…! Mine peer group see aimcat as a semifinal b4 CAT..! Your info will bring cheer for them too:-)
My Highest in Aimcat in 2011 series was 81 , had crossed 80’s just once , and otehr 16 tests were in range of 30’s to 60’s. Last 4 dint give as i thot it would lead to Destruction of my leftover confidence.
Final score 92%ile.
Aimcat are hugely a disappointment. Probably what TIME thinks is that a student after analysing his/her performance will get sad and will work hard.
Works for few , doesnt for a majority.May work as a demotivating factor.
One of my friend’s avg score in AIMCAT was just 63. He is in MDI gurgaon right now.
Dont let AImcats decide ur future instead keep working on the questions , especially the Verbal part .
greetings sir,
i am waiting for my cat result.though it was not good but i still want to knw what percentile can i fetch up with 8(section 1 quant) and 13 (section 2 verbal) with a 100% accuracy. i knw its quite laughable but plzz help me out..i did my bst prep. fr cat…guys plzz dnt make fun..i request
