Inception
It was somewhere in my head since school days since there is a sense of awe associated with services specially in north india and if you are reasonably ok in studies everyone expects you to clear it. I had a vague appreciation and inclination but it was only during graduation final year that I finally decided to go for it due to multiplicity of reasons. Desire to do something worthwhile and big, sense of responsibility towards society ( I know it sounds cliched but it was so), happiness it would bring to my family and wellwishers to quote few.
Information
Q. Outside Delhi, it’s hard to dig how to prepare for civil service. So How did you gather the necessary information / strategy / booklist?
Before Noida, I was at Rihand during the initial phase of my prep and believe me its one of THE remotest in India. You need to travel 220km to watch a movie :P it used to be an open air jail of the royalities. But digging info is no big deal in internet era. And most importantly, one should be in touch with serious aspirants and share/discuss strategies, booklist etc. as much as possible. Travel to coaching hubs of Delhi once in a while if you feel too lagged behind. Even the chaiwala and paanwala will be able to give you strategies out there ;)
Study Momentum
I am a highly erratic person when it comes to momentum. I dont even have the habit of reading newspaper daily…i would read 12-14 of them on alternate weekends. (caution: dont try this at home :P) boredom is ought to creep in during prep.. talk to friends, go out and have a walk, watch a good movie, listen to good music, send sms while having tea/coffee,have an awesome meal, write a poem or story, paint something, go shopping, clean your studytable/room, simply doze off over books… I mean thousands of things. Just close the books and give yourself a break. Just ensure that the break is not too long. Read some motivational books, paste motivational quotes in and around your room..create an exam aura..it helps :)
Hours
Q. On an average, How many hours did you study per day?
Ans. Varied from 2 to 8 hours. 8 hours is the max I could achieve. Overall avg would be 4 hours.
Q. How many months did it take you to complete the core syllabus of GS and optional subjects?
Ans. Technically speaking it took me about 1.5years i.e. after I entered my job in 2010 to my prelims in may 2012. But quality of prep in pubad and socio was abysmally low. I had just completed syllabus superficially and selectively. I focussed on completing it in depth and totality after prelims were over.
Strategy: CSAT (Aptitude)
- Last year I solved few sample papers from arihant publication book and used to do some questions online to come in flow but paper was way too easy than what I had prepared. I could manage a score of 160. I think the challenge is to manage time rather than difficulty level. A fair degree of practice would produce same result for non science students.
- Now please share the tips regarding aptitude preparation, especially the comprehension and decision making portion.
- As I told my preparation was almost zero for apti paper but in the process of preparation one has to read so much that reading speed and comprehension develops gradually even if one lacks it in the first place. Just come in flow before exam so that you work smartly and know the manageable and unmanageable areas at a glance.
- For decision making, thumb rule is to think like an officer. Honest upright decisive officer. You will get the option right from a gut feeling :)

I didnt have separate strategy for prelims and mains.. focussed more on factual parts for prelims and analytical parts for mains. But one mistake I would like to share, I devoted tooooo much time towards covering current affairs, the materials flooding in market during April-may, many other so called ïsme se pakka aayega”stuff before pre :P was disappointed to find not a SINGLE question from my high priority areas. It made me wiser for mains perhaps :) I relied only on my own reading of newspaper for current affairs, didnt even refer magazines, banked on standard books and self made notes and It seems to have worked. (got 268 in GS mains)
Mains 2013
UPSC has changed the GS syllabus for Mains 2013. So if you were to prepare for it, what’d be your approach/strategy/booklist?
- Approach would be to keep it simple. The kind of paper they are setting in GS, it isnt about sophistications or exploring treasure troves of some mystical knowledge.
- It’s more about the length and breadth of your general reading, sense of observation, presentation skill and ability to think comprehensively even under pressure.
- Specially the 25markers are way too open ended and familiar. The broader you read, the better marks you fetch.
- Hindu is THE bible for mains ( I know many people criticise its leftist orientation but it works)
- I spent lot of energy in the process of exploring the refined booklist or getting hold of a few of them but suffered from information overload due to diverse opinions.
- To add to miseries most of these exotic names are out of stock at flipkart and unavailable in rajinder nagar market (the hub of aspirants material) Was suggested by someone to calm down and wait for the right books to surface in the market on their own. Now I am doing that :)
- In the meantime going through Global Politics by Andrew Heywood. It would definitely help I am sure.
- Another book is India After Gandhi by Ram Chandra Guha widely recommended by everyone. I read it a year ago so will revise later.
Public Administration and Sociology
- The shift in questions paper is very visible, lesser degree of predicability, no 60markers, need to write more to get same marks (also elaborated by mrunal somewhere), analytical questions, higher relevance to contemporary socio-political scenario and so on.
- Just pick up last year papers and see the trend before 2008 and in last two-three years.
- There is no dearth of booklist/ study material on both of these optionals and I actually have nothing to add to what has already been repeated in this blog and elsewhere multiple times.
- Morever, my actual list might appear farcical since I referred VERY few books :) And perhaps this is the only get away I have for the readers.
- Its possible to fetch 147 in pub ad paper two by JUST reading rajni goyal, laxmikant and newspaper (that too my alternate weekend style ;) ) what is more important than reading multiple books is to read from limited sources and get it cemented in your brain, think, analyse, put things in perspective and write well.
- Any set of basic books that covers your syllabus is wonderful.
Optional Subject in Mains 2013?
Q. Instead of two, now UPSC will have only one optional subject. So if you were to give Mains 2013, which optional would you keep and why?
Ans. I would keep socio. My pub ad ppr 1 marks were 77. I heard of scores like 25, 37, 45,52,61,93 in ppr 1 secured by ppl in my extended circle. Highest I heard so far is 108. I think it explains my choice ;)
Compulsory papers
Q. Your booklist/strategy for compulsory Regional language paper.
Subscribed a hindi newspaper ten days before exams. Got sick with trivial/crime news, that too in pressure of mains. Didnt read it ever. You can try this strategy at your own risk :)
Q. Your booklist/strategy for compulsory English language paper.
Nothing.
Essay
Q. How did you prepare yourself for the essay?
Wrote two essays as practice and got them evaulated by a sir…got 118/125 marks and was happy with my writing skills till I saw my mains marksheet :)
Q. Which Essay did you write in Mains-2012?
I wrote the one on PPP but got a pathetically low score of 50marks !!!
Q.Provide some keypoints/highlights of your Essay.
If you want it for how NOT to write an essay I would be happy to give it :P but I dont remember the exact framewrk and content. I wrote a looooong one. I can tell you the good points and bad points as I have analysed so far:
Good Points:
- could manage a good handwriting even when I filled some 23-25 pages
- Made relevant diagrams
- Good vocab, coherence and presentation
- Covered topic very broadly and with variety of angles.
Bad Points:
- In attempt to be broad in view, didnt focus exclusively on PPP but on other keywords equally (I dont know if its a drawback though :( )
- Probably social aspects of PPP didnt please the examiner. They had some eccentricity in views inspired from neoliberal analysis of indian society I read long back.
- Covered topic, perhaps, VERY broadly.
Score: 50.
Lesson: Play safe. Write a down to earth basic essay. An attempt to fetch better marks writing a flamboyant essay or presenting an out of the crowd view may backfire.
Insecurity about “Profile”
Many aspirants fear the interview, thinking that “my profile is not good because I’ve low marks in SSC/HSC/College, I don’t have any extra-curricular certificates, I don’t have work experience,….I graduated from some unknown college, I’m from non-English medium and so on…” What’s your take on that?
Ans. Candidate has to appear better than a sheet of paper and not vice versa. A moderate profile with moderate performance would fetch better marks than too heavy a profile with a disappointing performance. Good profile is of course an advantage but only to the extent you prove yourself to be upto it.
How much portion of your interview centered on your profile?
It had a fair share of my profile, esp hobbies, job, home state etc.
Did they ask any uncomfortable question from your profile during the interview?
No.
Interview
Q. How did you prepare for the interview?
I gave mock interviews at Sankalp and Vajiram. Other than that I worked on my DAF and collected relevant info about my homestate, hobbies, extra curricular activities, job etc. to the extent I possibly could.
Q. Who was the chairman of you interview board?
Dr. Reddy
Q. How long was the interview?
About 30minutes
Q. Provide the list of questions asked (and if possible answers also)
Transcript provided on this link: https://files.secureserver.net/0s3wg05Y5pn8FA
Q. Was your interview on the expected lines of what you had prepared or Did they ask you totally unexpected questions? If yes, how did you handle it?
One can never prepare for the exact questions they ask..its a matter of their whims and the words you utter. You can only get prepared to ensure that you gain some confidence, are able to defend DAF, do not appear dumb at something you are supposed to know and polish yourself up on your body language or tone of speaking.

Wisdom
Q. Through this journey, what have you learned about life and competition? What is your message to future aspirants?
Preparation for services is an enriching phase of life that shall quickly pass whether or not you get through. The real vast vistas of great works to be done lie beyond this phase, again, whether or not you get through. In your deep internal true realisations, you must be very humble and know that it’s just an exam and not a benchmark of your coming success or fulfilment. But your actions and attitude towards cracking it must be aggressive and adamant, with a fighter attitude, winner attitude. I had a poster of Bolt in my room where he hushed at the audience while comfortably leaping much ahead of his competitors at the Olympics. Below it I wrote in huge letters: “shut up! I did it” This is not arrogance, but a befitting reply he gave to people who doubted his performance and questioned his success. I loved it. A cursory glance at it would fuel me with passion after a tiring day at office. However, be careful not to swap the above feelings :) Be calm in thoughts and uncompromising in actions, not vice versa.
Career backup
I was already working so didnt have insecurities on that front but down the line I would have gone for higher studies and shifted to academics/research if could not clear civil services.
Family and Friends
Q. Behind one topper are many people who stood by him/her during those uncertain times when he/she was merely an ‘aspirant’. Would you like to tell the world, who were those people in your case? Any specific motivational/inspiration incidence that you would like to share with the readers?
My family and friends have always put great trust in me and supported me throughout this journey. There was a time when I altogether abandoned the idea of preparation in the initial stage itself, as I felt I would not be able to cope with the working of the system when I get in, there are other better ways to do what one wants to do in life and other fundu ideas like that… not related to cracking the exam but towards a sense of satisfaction I thought it lacked. It was almost a fullstop to this journey when a very respected teacher of mine brought me back to track with renewed vigour and zeal and a deep sense of faith in my capabilities. Looking back I realise my positive mental state and calmness had a lot to do with my success, and it could never have been possible without the genuine trust and care bestowed on me. I was reminded that brickwalls are there for a reason, they let you know how badly you want something. They are there to stop the other people, not to stop you :) ( courtesy randy pausch, the last lecture. You can watch it on youtube, worth it indeed.. )
Bogus marketing propaganda
You are well aware of the unwritten golden rule of conducting toppers’ interview. Final question has to be about bogus marketing propaganda. So,
Q1. Were you a subscriber/ regular reader of Mrunal.org. If yes, then Since when? You can even say “no”, I’ll publish it without editing, unlike certain magazines hahaha.
Yes, I am a regular reader since 2010. I have seen this blog grow slowly…and now it has become so comprehensive and admired for its high quality , thanks to consistent efforts of Mrunal.
Q2. How did Mrunal.org help you in your preparation?
All the articles, especially economy, are full of knowledge yet so simplified. It helps one to be updated and focus on areas which otherwise may have been left/ignored. Some strategy type articles also act as eye opener and help you to refocus on studies.
@ tripti mam: do u suggest mechanical engg. as an optional in new single paper optional pattern. plz give its pros & cons.
pros: 1. chances to score very high if you are good at it. 2. helps in appearing for other exams (IES, GATE, other state govt jobs) 3. more or less predictable domains of qsns 4. not very unamangeable if you have been serious during grad and are clear at your fundamentals
cons: 1. huge syllabus 2. no help in GS 3. lot of time needed for practice of numericals since they are either wrong or right, one may end up with pathetic scores 4. peer group or guidance is needed. may be prof/batchmates/coaching/seniors etc etc. but its hard to do it on your own if you get stuck on a typical numerical you need to get it cleared by someone (unlike humanities where you can google it)
I wont suggest it since weightage of GS+essay has increased manifold. pick smthng which overlaps with it.
I found you got 168 this time. What has gone wrong in your attempt in 2013? Could you share your marks?
Tripti Ji,
Congrats, admiring personality. Need to take few suggestions from you, may i have your email id please. I am leading women cell in my company and sometimes i got confused how to deal with. I request if you can share your contact emsil id.

Plz provide proper guidence for AFCAT asap.
waiting 4 ur response with bated breath…
Kabir is idiot,,,Tripiti is hot…end of discussion
@ kabir……Honesty means whatever u commited in your life. express it to others neat and clean. and tripti told whatever she did. so, what is bad in this?
its simple keep mrunal site fresh .. and focus on upsc exam.
kabir 10 on 10 ..she is a wrong choice for civil job and those who support her lack administrator acumen.she is a misfit for upsc..
really very overt and can put you in sulk.
Hi Kabir,’
With utmost respect to your feelings about the ethical issue, can I beg to ask you why are u preparing for civil services to remove corruption or things like these. I feel the better platform is the Anna Hazare movement. If u crack Civils , at the most you will impact a district at the initial 10 years of your career but if you play a part of the mobilizer u will directly impact Central policies and frameworks. Also I hope you are not from a government college of engineering else it would have been difficult for you to prepare for civils for the ethical standards u set it, it would be a waste of govt money involved in grooming you as an engineer. If yes , I dont understand you are yourself complying with your propagated ethical standards.
All the best Kabir.
Yes Civil Services require people of the levels of your integrity . Point completely taken…..
But still I believe people who have high levels of such integrity and morality in them won’t be swayed by the girl’s approach. At the same time what about the people who cannot afford to loose their jobs due to poverty and at the same time do have the honesty in them and want to choose Civils as a career for the same reasons as you want to.
Wouldnt it be harsh on them if they carried their present jobs with a slack attitude. After all they have to compete with people like you who have left their jobs and are full on the preparation?
Isnt this a subsidy for these needy ones? And atleast there is an affirmative action for people behind the economic line?
Here Tripti’s advice would work as wonders to their career.. What say on the pragmatic line…….. either to forget Civils for work with the given approach. And you know very well civils is not a tom dick harry exam where one can excel in ones present profession and the same.
@tripti- could you give some more tips for people staying away from delhi and those who donot have any study circle as they are living in remote areas. As the course has changed this time, how to know what books/material to procure from delhi?
have a keen eye on internet forums blogs and other communities which discuss prep strategies and booklists. There is a huge overlap in the names of proposed books/sources as of now. Since you are planning to procure stuff from delhi you can consider sriram/vajiram printed material which is usually considered to be good. ARC reports, old NCERTS and toppers notes are other must buys. hope it helps :)
thanx a lot Tripti fr ur guidance
Hii Valan,
I do not agree to your luck theory. I feel UPSC has changed form conservative to dynamic to only judge people with an overall personality refering to their hard and smart work, mental toughness, adaptation rather than a complete academic overhaul. The closest analogy that comes to my mind is criket.. MSD successful still short on tehnique..
Hi.. mam
I am working in a PSU and preparing for Civils.
There is requirement in UPSC applications candidates working in PSU and appearinfg for civils to get a No Objection Certificate/ or have to give an underatiking that I have applied for Civils to the employer.
If I at any stage (Pre or Mains) I inform to the employer, that I am appearing for ciivls, Employer would make sure that I dont attend the exam.
On other hand If go ahead with the selection process without informing the Employer- need less to say about the chaos of ifs and buts.
Coul you pleasse tell me how you dealt this.
You could mail response to chandragupta4u@gmail.com . I ll be grateful.
thanks
Same question will come again to you – If I show courage, I disappoint the Chief Secretary or say the CM ?
If I keep silence and the police / CBI closes its eyes – Then no one will know that what I am doing alone
Hai Tripti,
Congrats for ur great success.I am in confussion of choosing optionals as my background is ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING.So is there any chances to take up my academics as an optional. As i read so many success full stories in their optionals including you.I finally determined as that if any person choose the academic optionals there is a chance of reducing the score as it is not in use for an administrator or any any services. If u don’t mind tell me whether to take up other than academics or academics. And u being as a background of Machanical Engineering why u had not choosen ur optional. And also I preparing for exam without any kind of coaching with a job for my finacial purpose.
Thanks in Advance,
Ashok.
Hai,
How to get NCERT books whether to download or can get in any shop.
Ashok
if u r in delhi u can ncerts from old rajinder nagar market
many many Congrats di… !! its a great honor for all the Uttarakhandi’s .. god bless u keep rising…
Congrates di……..and god bless u…
sir,how much preference we need to give on statistics related information and will it be imp for exam point of view ??
lucky you tripti
my above comment was based on the first few lines of this page…but securing a rank in cse is about sheer hardwork and no fluke…i must congratulate u for the same….congrats Di…
u people are of no worth …. tum logo se na ho pane ka… jiska selection ho gya use koste raho…. kahin selection nahi hua tumhara psu me govt sector me isliye pvt me job kar re ho itni hi dikkat h to pehle qualify karke khud ko proof karo tb criticize kar lena …well done tripti .. u rock…
@Sam, well I don’t know how come you can qualify that, I have left jobs at 3 PSU and was selected for CPWD in IES, and then I started working in private, and after some years, I decided to appear for UPSC.
The point was that this lady is an opportunistic, she deceived her organization now, she may (for sure) deceive again when she will get opportunity to take bribes, as an IAS officer.
That is why IAS / IPS officers are most corrupt people in India. Believe me they are more morally corrupt than even politicians
Any comments.
Brother…by the rate you are leaving jobs u may (for sure…more sure than u were when u clairvoyantly claimed that she will take bribe) leave Civil Services after clearing UPSC and getting the coveted job…perhaps in search of something new to prove yourself once again.
Let’s assume, even if I do leave UPSC, after working some years, there is nothing wrong in this. In fact, I know 2 people, who have left after 6-7 years. But these 6-7 years, they were fully devoted to their jobs.
My point is that wrong set of people have entered the system and most of these are opportunistic people, who put self gains ahead of common gains.
UPSC as whole needs to be scrapped, Even UK has done so in 1979, if I remember correctly. UPSC produces generalists, who are good for controlling not for developing the country. It was good during British era as the Govt, needed control, but current Govt. needs development.
Yes, nothing wrong in leaving your job, if you wish so. Regarding scrapping of UPSC, suggest something other than UPSC.
Gentleman,
You have all the rights to criticize people in a democracy but next time just make sure your arguments are not so narrow and superficial ,at least do not appear to be one.
Point noted Sir. I will not criticize anyone again just because I have rights to criticize in a democracy.
But perhaps you were not replying to me.
I am not sure, if the comment is directed at me, If yes, I fail to understand as to how I was narrow.
Anyway, it was a generic comment, directed for all those people sitting in PSU/Allied services like IPS/IRS preparing for IAS. They are already deceiving their organizations, they are opportunistic right now. There is high probability that a person who can deceive his organization, from where he earns his bread, will deceive his country also, when the right opportunity with good incentives would be there.
@Outerdelhitimes
I do not know to what extent it is moral and fair to question somebody’s integrity when he/she is not defending oneself. And what i meant by being narrow is that your argument was not put in a holistic way because every one do not have the option to leave everything and follow their biggest passion.Somewhere someone has to compromise and i hope you will not suggest people to compromise their dream. And please understand under what circumstances the statement was made -to guide those who believe it is untraceable when you have no option other than to take a job.
And i will be blunt when i say , let them deceive the organisation when they have bigger plans for their country and trust me that does not make them any less nationalist than you.
I agree with some of your points that may be it is not fair to doubt about someone, when they are not there to defend.
But at the same time, let me give you some bare facts.
Details of Seniors cum Cheaters (and hence Criminals), who got rank 1 in Civil Services
1. Shena Aggarwal, Topper CS-2011 was deceiving her training for IRS at National Academy of Direct Taxes and WOW she also got Rank 1. There are high chances that she will add to one more opportunistic IAS officer who don’t hesitate to deceive their jobs and their country to secure undue benefits (such as money, favors) for her and her family
2. Hariha V Kumar was deceiving her IRS training and taxpayers money to prepare for IAS. WOW she still got Rank 1 in CS-2012. For sure such opportunistic person will also be Rank 1 in grabbing the next opportunity at hand. Why should she not grab undue benefits, whenever an opportunity arrives to take money, power or influence? Why she will not be an opportunistic IAS / Collector after 5-10 years.
3. Story to unfold in CS-2013
Someone ABC, Topper CS-2013 was deceiving training at XYZ institute and was preparing for CS-2013 while enjoying salary from Taxpayer’s money for free. WOW ABC also got Rank 1 in CS-2013.
4. Story to unfold in CS-2014
Someone ABCD, Topper CS-2014 was deceiving training at XYZ institute and was preparing for CS-2014 while enjoying salary from Taxpayer’s money for free. WOW ABCD also got Rank 1 in CS-2014.
How long will this nonsense go on? Till eternity if UPSC don’t wake up and become strict on “Senior Candidates”
Ordinary Indian Citizen on street will be scratching his/her head as to why the system is so slow and corrupt. Perhaps a little Joe on street is not even aware that the Shena Aggarwal, Haritha V Kumar, ABC and ABCD, the so called Toppers of UPSC are busy in their opportunistic endeavors and most of them are too busy to look into issues of an ordinary Citizen. They got these ranks by opportunistic traits and are now more encouraged and devoted in pursuing their opportunistic endeavors.
you are just displaying your extreme stupidity via these non sensical comments. the usage of words like cheaters and criminals for previous year toppers shows just your frustration and mental bankruptcy. and yes for your kind information people who re appear for upsc mains take exemption from the foundation course, give mains and then join the training later. no taxpayer money is lost and no deceiving/opportunism is involved whatever the hell does that mean. every person is free to appear and get selected based on merit. who are you to judge them? even upsc has no problems, academies have no problem, dopt has no problem and there is official provision of exemption from training to re appear for next mains.. whats the problem with u? go get admission in some mental hospital to get cured of your frustrations jealousy and psychological illness. the time you have wasted in exhibiting your hurt ego could have been better utilised in reading some spiritual literature to heal your bruised mental state.
I avoid getting myself stuck with some forums like this. But anyway, you have really nice suggestions, at least, I should read some spiritual texts, I have been away from them for long.
1. There is nothing wrong with usage of words cheaters and criminals, who have taken salaries in foundation courses and were preparing for UPSC. You can call it mental bankruptcy, but soft words does not help at times.
2. They get salaries even in foundation course, so that’s a cheating and looting of taxpayer’s money
3. That is really opportunism as they are looking to personal benefits instead of bigger goal, is there some other definition, please enlighten
4. even upsc has no problems, – I as a citizen of INDIA has the problem, I don’t want these opportunistic and cheaters to go to bureaucracy, as there are high chances that they will do the same,
5. reading some spiritual literature to heal your bruised mental state – Good suggestion, thanks for this
I have written RTI/Letters to MoHRD, UPSC, ……so many people and I am receiving positive response on this. Believe me, India needs to improve bureaucracy and the best thing to start is “UPSC reforms”. We have lot of people with us, you will notice lot of positive changes in UPSC in next year.

koi salary nahi milti foundation course exemption pe. baki ki faltu debate pe mujhe koi comment nahi karna. aapke hisab se koi jis naukri me aa jaye to zindagi bhar agla exam na de..chahe kitna talented kyu na ho.
@Kamal – Thanks for your comments
koi salary nahi milti foundation course exemption pe – This is a news for me. As per my information both the Rank 1 were already working full time. I am not sure how come they can get this Leave Without Pay, in first year itself. It is really surprising, but I will explore this in details.
Regarding 2nd comment, I am not against trying out, but against deceiving of organizations.
Don’t worry, this debate has been taken to the highest level to both UPSC and DoPT and they are both concerned about Seniors and last year people in IRS, Account services misusing the training facilities for preparing.
This year, you will notice this in the marks of the senior candidates in the interviews. I don’t want to reveal much but this has been taken seriously by the respective people.
