Introduction
Q. Tell us something about yourself, your family, when and why did you enter in this field of competitive exams?
I am born and brought up in Gorakhpur, hold a masterās degree in Microbiology. I have 2 siblings, My father has served the IAF and my mother is a homemaker. I was always fascinated by the idea of representing India on the world platform, itās the ultimate privilege for me. I always thought of appearing for the CSE but it was only after getting my MSc degree (2011) it became obvious that I was never too interested in pursuing research as a career and hence it was my time to chase my dream. I was lucky enough to seek initial guidance from a friend (now senior)Ā who happened to qualify in the same year.
Electronic Vs Paper material
Q. In recent times, there is spur in electronic material- blogs, sites, pdfs, RSS-feeds. Many aspirants feel bogged down by this information overload. So, how much do you rely on electronic material and how much on the paper material (Books, newspapers)? If possible narrate a typical day in your studylife. What is your style of preparation (e.g. I continue making notes no matter what Iām reading, I just read multiple times but donāt maintain notes, I make mindmaps on computer ā¦or xyz style)
I have a habit of reading online for quite some time now, though m a firm believer that ebooks cant replace the actual ones still I find it easier to search and read e-material. So, the answer is YES, my whole preparation revolved around the internet.
- I used to visit blogs like Mrunal.org, gktoday.in, halfmatnr.com (for ethics case study).
- Maintained account on Evernote (to maintain my notes, I would just read and save links in respective notebooks. Ease of access makes it a good source to revise) and Feedly ( RSS feeds from various sources ā AIR news spotlight, newspaper editorials, IDSA, Mrunal, CFR, The Diplomat, PIB etc . used to read from here then save good articles in evernote to revise).
- I subscribed to few youtube channels and made rough notes while watching these:
- for MAINS: CEC UGC (for Sociology videos and few on Indian art, architecture, history, ethics
- for the INTERVIEW: Rajya Sabha TV (for Indiaās World, Law of the land, the big picture) , Indian Diplomacy by MEA
- I have relied more on the internet than the books. But I donāt promote this way, everyone should choose according to their convenience.
- I tried covering The Hindu thoroughly, would save the articles in evernote for revision.
A typical day would begin with reading the newspaper, saving articles, reading the topic at hand 2-3 hrs GS, same for the optional, checking feeds for updates, practicing answer writing for 1-2 questions, watching videos of interest.
Tempo and style
Q. People know what books and syllabus points are to be prepared. But most of them lack consistency in their preparation. So, how do you keep study momentum going on? How do you fight against the mood swings and distractions?
I had my share of ups and downs, there were days of no study too, but I promised myself to atleast complete the newspaper dailyĀ because itās one thing that troubles the most in backlog. To keep the sources minimal I stuck with materials that kept my interest going, for instance ā watching videos, reading a less formal article on the internet instead of reading same thing from a book, as long as I could solve a question, it was enough.
Itās also very imp to know your strength and weaknesses- I can understand things really well but have problem remembering the basics and facts at times, so to resolve this I used to read things from various sources to get a better understanding, then write down things to remember on flash cards (for eg ā census figures, economic datas, acts, bills, schemes etc )
I tried to avoid distractions as much as possible, but when encountered withā¦. used to take few time off, clear the thought, watch LBSNAA FC videos (to remind myself of the goal) and move on.
Struggle of a Senior player
After 1-2 failures in any competitive exam, a phase of mental saturation comes. The person knows the booklist, he knows what is necessary to succeed. But it doesnāt yield result. The armchair āexpertsā would point out UPSC is ātestingā emotional intelligence of the candidate or UPSC wants to break the backs of senior players, daily conspiracy theories on orkut….ā¦Not to mention all the emotional struggle-against those irritating neighbors and relativesā¦MY question are two:
Q1. How did you survive through this mental prison and whatāre your words of wisdom to other senior players? If any specific inspirational incident(s), please share.
I qualified in my 2nd attempt, was too sure in the 1st one (without much preparation), it was shocking and heartbreaking, but thankfully my friends and family came to my rescue and made me realize that my preparation was not enough to make it too the list in that year, there were more deserving candidates than me. Also that results came out on 3rd of May and Pre on 25th I hardly had any time to grief upon, time heals everything.
Q2. What went wrong in your previous attempt? What changes did you make in this current attempt?
Lack of revision and answer writing practice for the mains, I couldnāt even complete the syllabus. Even the interview score was not that good because I was quite nervous.
In my current attempt I tried to
- complete the whole syllabus,
- Ā enrolled in a test series for answer writing,
- practiced 5-6 essays.
All this helped me gain confidence.

Mains answer-writing?
Q. How was your experience with the āfixed spaceā answer sheet?
I focused on completing the answer, wrote mostly in point format, couldnāt fill the complete space provided answer for any question.
Q. Did you write answers in bullet points or in paragraphs? Some players (who cleared mains and got interview call letter) were claiming that they wrote entire paper in bullet points, so it doesnāt matterā¦.whether examiner is asking āexamine, comment, discuss or xyzāā¦.simply write in bullets and points.
Mainly bullet points, depending on the question. If its descriptive, 5-6 line introduction followed by points and conclude with a small paragraph.
Q. Did you follow the āintroduction-body-conclusionā format? because some mains-qualified candidates claim they simply wrote the points they could recall within the time, instead of bothering with proper introduction and conclusion.
I had no 1 best method, it basically depended on the question asked.
Q. In GS papers, Since UPSC came with those 100 and 200 words questions. What was your approach in the exam (I wrote all, I only focused on the questions where I could answer perfectly, I just not to high quality points to reach the word limit etc.) Because the UPSC aspirant Community is divided over what counts as a āgoodā paper. Some experts claim you should attempt all- even if it involves āmaking upā an answer with filler lines, some claim attempt only those questions you know perfectly. Where do you stand on this? [Based on your experience and of your seniors/buddies]
I attempted all the question because my main aim was to complete the paper, for the questions I wasnāt too sure about wrote limited content mainly in point format.

Career Backup
Q1. If you were not selected, what was your career backup plan?
Nothing as such
Views on UPSC reforms
What are your views on following issues?
Q. Optional subjects should be removed altogether. The present stalemate is helping no-one, except coaching-owners, book publishers.
Yes
Q. Despite what UPSC has done in recent years, it has failed to curb the nuisance of Delhiās coaching factories. In fact itās increased under the new syllabus in 2013. Letās face it, most candidates who gave Mains-2013 have relied on (authentic OR Xeroxed) coaching notes because there was hardly any time left to prepare so many topics in such short time. This system work against an individual preparing from far-away area, without any financial resources, high-speed internet or contacts in Delhi.
True
Q. UPSC should disclose official prelim answerkey and cutoffs, immediately after prelim is over, instead of postponing it till interview phase is over.
Agree
Q. UPSC should be conducted online like IBPS and CAT exam to shorten the duration of exam.
Might create difficulty for people from rural areas
Insecurity about profile
Q. Many candidates prepare sincerely but constantly live under fear about āprofile insecurityā. Iām not from a big college, Iām not from English medium, and I donāt have work-experience. What if they ask some stressful questions in the interview about this? Did you suffer from such insecurities? What is your message to these candidates?
Thankfully I didnāt suffer much and I personally donāt consider profile is too imp as long as you know your content.
Wisdom
Q. Through this struggle and success, what have your learned? What is the wisdom of life and competition? What is Your message to the new aspirants?
Focus on planned study, as variety to your sources. Have faith in yourself and constantly find your weaknesses and try resolving them.
Credit: Friends/family
Q. Behind every topper are many people who stood by during those uncertain times when he/she was merely an āaspirantā. Would you like to tell the world, who were those people in your case? Any specific incidence that you would like to share with the readers?
God, family (My Brother- Anurag who stood by me in every thick and thin) , my lovely friends ā have few but all of them are gems, owe quite a lot to them, teachers: it was because of their faith in me that gave me confidence.
BOGUS Marketing Propaganda
Q. You are well aware of the sacred rule – the last question must be about self-marketing. So, Did you use Mrunal.org for your preparation and if yes, how did it help you?Ā And you can even reply āNoā. Iāll still publish your answer without tempering.
I regularly visited your website for updates, it was an integral part of my preparation. I am thankful for your guidance, keep the good work going.
hey mrunal …… u r disgusting man …. u r selectively allowing only pro reservation comments to be published …shame on u brother … i have followed ur blog for last 3 years but im seriously disappointed by by yur partisan attitude … grow up man … what will those people do for the country who themselves unnervingly take the support of reservation to get selected …… the well off among the reserved r hijacking all the benefits of reservation and then blaming all the ills on caste system and the general category people !!!!!! its high time u should take a clear stand on the issue ………………or else rename ur blog as MRUNAL only FOR OBC,SC,ST ………SHAME SHAME
I would request you to rise above all these differences . UPSC is not a job, it is a service. and behind this there is a philosophy that binds this country as one. As a responsible citizen of this country, we have to rise above all these differences and make this country great. Mrunal is serving this country selflessly by working day and night. It is wrong to point any finger on him.
If not as a civil services aspirant, than atleast as a citizen of this country, please change your thinking.
yes,,pooja u r completely right
@Pooja
can you please tell me from which category u belong??
u r becoming very proud of ur category just tell me and stop advising anyone about the service gandhiji mat bano tum bahut dekhe hain tumhare jaise
tum desh ka service kerna chahte ho hhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. ek bat batun tum jaisi log desh ko lutte hain service nahin samajhe ki nahin
arre Rajiv bhaiya….kyun apna bhadaash Mrunal sir pe nikaal raha hai re….I’m also from general category…kuch hone wala nahi hai comment karke…don’t pollute this sacred site and let him do his work….crib karke kuch nahi hoga..padh lo..nahi toh tumse naa ho paega…general me waise hi khatarnaak competition hai
“nahi toh tumse naa ho paega “!!!!!.. MADAM ji …. bina reservation ke bahuto ka kuch nahi ho payega !!! mrunal is surely doing a commendable job ….lets rest the debate here … becz this is surely not the right place for it …. but the reserved category students should also not be intoxicated by the success based on reservation and realize that to claim reservation just becz of being born in a certain caste and then to blame the caste system for all ills is the biggest kind of hypocrisy … GUD LUCK friends.
Even he rename the blog, i bet you won’t stop visiting.
happy dushera caligula ………have some rosogula !!!
Same to you, watching my weight bro
Rajiv, hw dare u insult mrunal bhai on his on website, ‘jis site se knowledge letha hai, usi pe ched karta hai’. You should apologize to him man. We have high regards for him & will remain so forever. Rajiv bhai, be mature yaar, be practical & dont think abt things tat is not in ur hands &,of course, your preparation level is in ur hands, concentrate on tat yaar. By the way Inspiring interview, congrats Neha mam.
happy dushera to u also !! …RESERVATION REFORMS are the need of the hour …sooner or later it will have to be taken up …. u cannot divide the countries resources based on your vote bank strength only ….. thereby threatening the competence of the nation itself !! unconditional apologies to anyone who might have disliked whatever i mentioned ….
LOOSER are always looser , they talk like looser and they live like looser……tell me just one straight answer, why are you applying for civil service if you have problem with reservation, don’t vomit here your dirty and poor mind thoughts here when you didnt clear your exam, if you have balls then first go on strike and ask for a change and then apply for exams….i feel pity for morons like you who didnt know the difference between “service and Job” . OR might be people like you joine this as a job jus for money and power. Be the part of system first then change it. be an aspirant dont be a politician. and if you really have a problem with the system then join a dharna party. and kindly its my request to all. This blog is not our personal blog, its a public forum which has a mission and the person behind this is trying to serve you best so atleast respect his commendable work. Dont treat this place like FB or Twitter and you mr.Rajiv how shalow you are, you have shown by abusing the owner. its your chracter and if you are trying to show your modesty that you are following from last 3 years, then he didnt ask you to follow, you are doing for your mean. LOOSER. MIND IT. and yes m also from general category.
compliments accepted ……
now all reserve category guys r pretending to be from general category and showering their praises for me ….
deeply humbled by your generosity and way of expression ……….
u people r dragging me again nd again and compelling me to respond …. much to my own irritation ……but now i wont ……. i wont …. i wont ….final ….. i wont
thank god, rajiv that you are not a civil servent.upsc wants all the best candidates from each category.best from gc,obc,sc,st etc.it does not mean that every reservation candidate who clears prelims get selected.yours is typisal uppercaste fuedal mentality who does not like people in low caste gets higher posts.even if she scored 243 in prelims you people will be cribbing.when NOTA was implemented in general elections polling % in reserved constituencies showed a rise.it was because upper caste people cast NOTA.EARLIER POLLING WAS LOW BECAUSE UPPER CASTE PEOPLE TOLD AMONG THEM WHETHER WE GO FOR POLLING OR NOT ANY LOW CATE ONE ONE WILL BE ELECTED.caste reservations can only end if people try to end their prejudices.even in moder educated youth from uppercaste aversion to lowe caste still exists due to their upbringing and great’sanskrithi’.there are many cases where a loer caste person is in superior post and upper caste subordinate feel complex in obeying his instructions.MAY GOD BLESS YOU RAJIV,NOT TO GET ANY KEYPOSTS,LEST YOU WILL BE DRAGGING INDIA TO CENTURIES OLD BACKWARD INDIA TO WHICH FOREIGNERS LOOK IN AVERSION.
Its disgusting on your part for saying such abusive words for a man like Mrunal sir, please keep the dirty politics matter out of your preparatory journey as this disheartens several persons here. Today you have doubted the character of a Teacher, who is doing every bit of his efforts for people like us…..So next time, its better never to insult those from whom you are learning so many things….So its better to concentrate on your studies instead of these stupid politics….
Hi neha congs please suggest me books and note for sociology. .
There will always be toppers from AIIMs, IITs, IIMs, Engineering, English-medium, particular caste-region-religion, posh-family or xyz other feature-profile which you hate.
If you don’t like it, then become a topper yourself and next year I’ll publish your interview.
Either way, your time and energy is better utilized in preparing for the exam than fighting online debates about it.
point taken ..
I sincerely appreciate the freedom of speech on this website . Do not let moderators rein people’s thought . We all have a dream, to live in a mature democracy. Thanks again.

well if u really want to discuss reservation policy instead of getting personal and caste selective try to debate with constitutional and sociological perspective
1) its clash against freedom of equality or equal opportunities article 16
2) purpose it serves ,whether it a pragmatic approach true to its purpose
3) comprise with quality and striving for excellence (artice 51A clausej)
caste reservation hai to hai,100 seat aaye to 50 maan ke lado yaha baka bak karne se kya hoga,ps i am general n got selected in bank po,ssc, uppsc health inspector,……

JAI GANDHI JAI BHAGAT …..INQUALAB ZINDABAD
Brothers & Sisters,
I’m working in ONGC. I cherished the dream of IAS but seriously speaking, it has become very hard to prepare with this rig job. It is very hectic job. It is just the govt job by name. It is no way different from any pvt job. I’m getting monthly salary but getting time to prepare has become very hard. What should I do?
Then pray for me too Gandhi Bhagat Singh bhai ji, …. I’ll pray for you.
Good to see your preference for the foreign services over the administrative services, I myself have a predilection towards a diplomatic portfolio and must say you are quite an inspiration…all the best for an amazing career ahead !
congo mam….
This 1000 seats in UPSC is itself misleading and many UR novices fall prey to it when they see it for the first time.Actually there are less then or equal to 500 seats for UR.SO if u belong to UR category then u have to be in top 500 and not top 1000 that parents generally misunderstand and say beta/beti u couldnt get atleast 1 seat from the 1000 seats :D
Frndz… mam got success ok. Hard work toh kiya hoga. But mam told lie about prelims ka score. Unhone bataya 80+155 =235. But mam ka real score is 86+136.68 = 223. obc cutoff toh 222 tha na?
U can check it at

and they say that upsc can detect liars in the interview.

your comments are in bad taste and uncivilized ……..desist from such acts ….. sc,st,obc r politically nurtured , conditioned , and groomed categories …… there r gud and bad people in every spectrum of society …..u cant paint everyone which the same brush !!!
Bhai IB se ho kya ?
Jokes apart but now what will MRUNAL say ??????????
he wrote earlier above that ” i dont feed the answer which the toppers give in interview “(which miraculously has now been deleted from the reply of MRUNAL) ……..he tacitly supported the deceitful by equating such people with likes of IITS,AIIMS,IIMS …… i make it clear once again no one in this country is against reservation …… but the benefit of reservation should be given to and taken by only those who r in need of it …..and it should not be a reward for people who indulge in identity politics of any kind ….
Just imagine the extent of lie people like NEHA YADAV might have resorted to in order to clear any exam ……..
Now MRUNAL …wiil u ask for an apology from NEHA MADAM (RANK 24 IAS 2013 !!!!!) ?? or at least a reprehension on your part to her ??
MRUNAL sir i have highest degree of respect for u and the service which u are providing ….. but i dont agree with u that we should be mere spectator watching the things as it unfolds …whether gud or bad ……and focus only on UPSC while we are in UPSC journey ….. our country not only needs gud administrator who are responsible and active but also responsible and informed citizens who cherish their DUTY as much their RIGHTS !!!!!!!!!!
No Offence Meant MRUNAL sir once again …..
There is no fault in Mrunal bhai..It is expected that the info provided by a UPSC topper would be correct..
agreed……….. but now that the breach of trust has openly come to light …. and YADAV is IFS rank 1 …right ?? no ordinary people like us….. so corrective measure should be taken by MRUNAL sir …. right ????
I have been following this site for quite a time now… Mrunal sir has improved the place according to the need…I am sure that after this Mrunal sir will croosscheck the facts provided by the topper before publishing the interview as this place has a huge traffic now and many ppl are affected..Regarding Reservation policies and politics I agree with all the points that u have raised..
@Rajiv Singh
Way to go man Impressive !! to say the least. Anyways the fact that you have given this issue so much of your time and effort it will be the most appropriate on your part to take the matter in your own hands. How about approaching UPSC or DoPT directly. I am sure this will be helpful with
“Structure, organization and functioning of the Executive and the Judiciary Ministries and Departments of the Government; pressure groups and formal/informal associations and their role in the Polity” [STRESS A BIT YOU VE READ IT SOMEWHERE] as welll as essay and answer writing.
And for @Mrunal sir, this guy is epic. This guy is busy in his own world. He is more than a seasoned campaigner to get influenced by provocations. Trust me on that. Common Man the amount of stuff he covers and the efforts he puts in it makes me jealous to stay the least. Being an aspirant I cannot comprehend why am I lagging in comparison to a person who is here for mere “shram-daan”
Trust me @Mrunal Sir I will make it a point that In coarse of time I will make sure that I am able to cover stuff in much better way than you do. Need I say more I guess not,
And Neha Mam all the best hope to join you at work in the coming years
Mrunal,
The Recent comments tab which is to the left of your article series is very disturbing. The comments should be posted/visible seperately at a link specifically for that purpose and should be visible to the user only if he/she intends to look at the discussion/comments.
@ Neha Yadav
Your story is very inspiring madam & wish you a great career ahead.
Initially having read this interview I was feeling proud that ok there are good things out of reservation and people who are genuinely good are getting benefitted. My conviction was further augmented by the performance of Thavaseelan Sir (2011) who took SC reservation and went on to rock in LBSNAA with stellar performances and winning several gold medals there. But all this is grounded in something called personal integrity and honesty. If by any chance Neha has deliberately pushed up her marks then I regret to say that it is totally unbecoming an aspirant and that too a top ranker. I would be forced to imagine a future where she would do anything for a few perks. My whole respect I had garnered for her now stands shattered.
It would be good if Neha comes out here and explains herself. That would indeed be a good first step in diplomacy, a career she has now chosen for herself.
Ok I might clear this exam or I might not. But one thing I have imbibed now is to guard my integrity till death.
This exam is not something you clear by hook or crook. I stand cheated and I deplore her audacity to misguide and instill people with false hopes. All this provided she has deliberately done it. Hence this would be a good time for her to explain herself.
It is very unfortunate that we r discussing cateism inspite of nationalism all the time . i think both sides have their points right but u guys picked up awrong place to debate
@NEHA YADAV ……………..your silence is deafening !!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the best Neha. You have proven yourself time and again, but then it is an ongoing process. I am sure your actions will be an inspiration to me and a nonchalant jammer on all this nuisance..
there is no fault of Mrunal Sir here.. he cant possibly cross check every detail given by every interviewee. That being said, such an error, whether intentional or not, does not paint a nice image of a UPSC topper. hopeful hardworking aspirants become skeptics and some of them in turn, may turn to blending into a broken system to forward their needs, instead of improving it to forward the requirements of the needy. :(
Hey guys no need to fight over reservation. Even I got 236 last year and could not clear prelims. But that is the fact of life. just prepare becoz thats the only way out. Plz do not belittle anyone on this site. It doesn’t look gud. Lets give Neha credit for her hard work. Don’t make it difficult for other successful candidates to publish their interviews. We surely learn smthng or the other from every interview. Cheers !!
