Analysis of Mains-2014 GS1 Paper

- Word limit reduced but complexity & vagueness increased. साला इतना डिटेल में कोन प्रिपेर करता है? (Who prepares everything in this much detail?)
- It seems Mains exam has become a competition, not to select “best among good answers” but rather “less bad among the worst answers”. Because it’s impossible to write 25/25 in honest manner even with sincere preparation.
- Easy to give arm-chair commentaries like “UPSC is testing candidate’s emotional aptitude, and for xyz question- Hindu, old-NCERT or some random optional subject book has given 1-2 points, so candidate ought to have web-researched backwards and prepared a decent 200 words notes on everything under the Sun”….Plain waste of demographic dividend, electricity and bandwidth it is.
- But positive side: Paper doesn’t put those without coaching, at disadvantage. Even for Mains-2015 exam, if coaching-walla try to revamp their material from scratch, perhaps UPSC will come up with yet another Back-Breaking MoveTM.
- More can be said after analyzing the paper and preparing its Answerkey in peace.
| 2013 | 2014 |
|---|---|
| 10 marks = 200 words | No five-marker questions this time. 10 mark = 150 words. Word limit reduced. Seems UPSC examiner realized it’s difficult to assemble 200 words for every topic under the Sun. |
| Culture difficult. | More difficult, and weightage doubled from 20 to direct 40 marks. |
| Modern Indian History: Lord Dalhousie asked. (1850s) | Rewind the tape even further (1760s). Panipat asked. |
| — |
|
| Freedom struggle complicated- like role of foreigners who made India their homeland. Women freedom fighters. |
|
| Less questions of this format. | Question with interlinking between two syllabus topics Example
|
| Globalization topic asked | Not asked. |
| Geography 70 marks. |
|
| sociology vague (increase male membership in women organization) | Slightly less vague because there is ample opportunities to ‘invent’ answers in joint family-economic factors, patriarchy and working women. |
Anyways, let’s check the paper:

Bogus Marketing Propaganda
There is not much to propagandize, because just two questions where Mrunal.org had sufficient content:
| Question | utility out of 10 marks |
|---|---|
|
10/10 |
|
10/10 |
| World history questions- good amount of points in old NCERTs uploaded at Mrunal.org/history | 0 because I didnot write old NCERT. |
| Darjeeling Tea. | 5/10. Because the said article only talks about why Darjeeling was suitable. But doesn’t talk about why Britishers couldn’t move beyond that. Those points had to be ‘invented’. |
| Total Aukaat | 25/250 |

Was tough and illogical
This paper was like a wind of fresh air. Certainly not for those, who had go by syllabus approach.
it’s applied knowledge or wisdom now. Bookish question even if asked as masked so they remain unrecognized.
As far as the website is concerned, I’m happy that I didn’t right Jholachaap NGO in SHG question.
Sahi me boss…sala itna detail me koi prepare nai krta hai :D
Thanks a lot Sir!!! I was refreshing your site from 5.00 PM.
Paper was really very tough. Paper 2 is more indirect. It seems that rewards ratio for study is reducing day by day :-)
You are absolutely right about the analysis Mrunal…I doubt if the examiner himself knows properly what he eants to ask. It has been reduced to who among the better ones wins the lottery…all questions could be attempted even if one one knows 2-3 lines about them..
By the way hats off to you for including BRICS BANK/AIIB and WTO in revision notes in the exact format asked in GS paper 2..thanks alot..
i heard somebody saying… yaar 2 mahine pehle bhi paper dete to aisa hi hota….
Mrunal sir…thanks a lot….
UPSC has shown variations on day-2.
GS-I, 25 ques * 10 marks * 150 words
GS-II 20 ques * 12.5 marks * 200 words
But, questions are reasonably high standard and complex, a few are easy-looking. You see the ques and feel “yess.. I know this”.
BTW, @Mrunal: Appreciate your sincere acceptance. It could be 20/250, but the inputs you have given thus far are commanding and the knowledge people gained is substantial.
SIR, U Have a great utility, there are many questions that have a link, some-way or the other
and utility definetly cannot be compared with questions/marks
thank u so much for your efforts!!
u are our inspiration!!
THANX MURNAL SIR FOR PROVIDE QUICK SERVICES WITH ANALYTICAL APPROACH
hahaha……….arfare barfaap re……..!!!!! ee to wakai total siyaapaa hui gawa!!!!
lol…raag darbaari effect…arrfareyy bharfaiyaa…parfepar mein lolwaa harf garfayaa.. :D
Most of the unusual climatic happenings are explained as an outcome of the El-Nino effect. Do you agree?
What would be the answer? Its not directly El-Nino cause climate change (it may or may not cause drought in India) also Most of the climate change cant be explained by Alnino some of them are due to Anthropogenic activies and some are natural due to volcani eruptions,Rosby Waves(Western Disturbance) etc.
Please clear my doubt.
http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/science/role-of-el-nino-in-heat-buildup-in-indian-ocean/article6591264.ece
But this article says that El-Nino affect the global climate
Global Warming= frequent El-Nino=Climate change
EQUINOO and indian ocean dipole also influence
So whats the answer agree or not?
i agree due to following reasons i mentioned in exam
floods in australia
more rain n floods on peruvian coast , atcama desert
less rainfall n drought lyk situation in india
The answer is a YES and NO, the unresolved mystery behind ELNiNO tells us not to conclude anything.
The points i have written are:
EL Nino is still not understood completely so jumping to conclusion is not required, however we have observed that due to addition of heat by anthropogenic activities, leading to global warming, has certainly increased the frequency with which el nino occurs along with its intensity and related phenomenon. Recent phenomenon like the polar vortex or the modoki effect in north central pacific or the kelvin wave are partially linked to the el nino but not completely. Thus most of unusual climatic happening are mostly due to the anthropogenic activities, of which one is increased frequency of El NIno occurrence and related phenomenon. therefore the role of ELnino in the occurrence of unusual climatic happenings can be linked but not clearly established.
Paper was easier than last year…
hmm ..jo xam nhi dete unhe easy hi lgta h hamesha :P

24*7 hours service from Mrunal. His article can appear anytime.
I exceeded the word limit in my best answers i.e. In around 13 questions. Would my marks be deducted based on that? Also, when an answer is thoroughly wrong, does it create a wrong impression in examiner’s min and make us lose marks in other questions too? Can you please shed some light on this, Mrunal?
You have committed a BLUNDER !! It was specifically mentioned under instructions to stick to the word limit + content is important NOT length. Moreover, how come you afford to over-write in such lengthy and approach-based paper ?
Or you were too happy with your prep ? Whatever man, I feel sorry for you.
Come back next year. ATB
isko kehte hain khushi ke maare suicide kar lena..bhaai mere agle papers mein wrd limit pr fevikwik laga kr chipke rehna..>_<
jyada hoshiyaari thik baat nahi hoti h
all the best..:)
paper was very very easy… but for those who are not appearing…
it is a different game when u r actually writing the exam
The answer for, Why British did not move beyond darjeeling ?
Reason:
Beyond Darjeeling, Arunachal Himalayas exist. in Arunachal Himalayas Shiwalik formations are not exist, which are essential for tree
plantations. so British did not go beyond Darjeeling
I think you understood the question incorrectly, here beyond darjeeling means towards the western side and not towards assam. Tea plantation is well established in darjeeling, assam etc. The reason behind this is the soil, climate etc.
Tea requires adequately drained soil and a temp of around 20-27degree along with well terraced landscape to prevent any water logging. Thus for these reasons it never passed beyond darjeeling. Because as we move west rainfall decreases and slope of the mountains also decreases.
Thnk u mrunal bhai
total aukaat…funny sir…nevertheless your utility will never diminish….even though direct questions haven’t came but still your articles are the best and gives very good understanding of topics…you are our big inspiration…i always eagerly wait for your articles…thanks for your efforts!!!!!
sirr. wat. 2 do for. nxt. year
sir, please analyse the gs paper for us regarding the source of question asked and a proper guidance for preparing gs mains for 2015. thank you
how can you say that this format is not helping coaching.
i think they are now helping a lot to a few sincere coaching who do the prescribed research work on behalf of aspirants and also to them who are blessed by flowery writing style.
it is getting tougher day by day.
now it seems it is becoming a team affair rather than a single man’s fight, else you have to be born intelligent.
If coaching-walla bother updating their content for next year, then UPSC will do something unpredictable again.
Sir,plz post gs2 questions also…
Sir, you are giving good guidance to upsc aspirants
If you give us some briefnotes to those questions it will be more than happy thing for us. More over your weekly curremt affairs analysis is too good plz give brief notes for that one too
Thank you. Hoping so
It’s not easy when we write in the examination hall…. it was totally out of expectations and such kind of shock can not be handled in exam situations.
Mrunal sirji….Tea wala bhi cover kara hai aapne World Geography Section mein…Yahin se padhke kara maine attempt….so it becomes 30/250…
Earlier UPSC used to target the coaching centre wallas trying to break their backs. now its trying to break the test series walles also.
worth 20 marks of writing material is heaven for aspirants. Thank u for your immense effort on the exam.
Just like the US once said “we will bypass the UN”, similarly “the upsc have bypassed mrunal.org”.
However no other prepared material could even provide an answer to one question, unlike mrunal which provided 2 ques in paper 1 and 2 questions directly in paper 2.
Thanks mrunal sir, The only 4 questions in which I wrote something meaningful were the ques which have answers in your material.
PS: It’s true ki paper agar kal raat bhi mil Jata to bhi aisa hi hota.
Island arcs in GS? Seriously?
Mrunal sir ,
Aaapki total aaukat koi nahi nikal sakta.
U r our source of INSPIRATION.
i heard everyone saying they wrote something or the otherfor each question…but everyne was clueless if they wrote wat the question demanded..
Indian history , world history and geography was kind of alright..but culture was beyond imagination. And Panitpat question was out of syllabus.
But compared to last year, each one of us would have attempted those 50mm Indian society giving a sense of satisfaction..heheheh..
Panipat question was not of syllabus. The syllabus specifically mentions “Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century” — middle of eighteenth century means from 1750 onwards and questions says third battle 1761.
dear raman, the question demanded the geographical aspect and not history,
we had to give the importance of location of panipat…
18th century means 1700-1799. Mid of 18th century means from 1750-1847. Third battle of panipat =1761. So not out of syllabus.
