Question from a Visitor
Could you please tell me what should I study for the post of Assistant Commissioner of Employee provident fund I have checked the syllabus but if you could tell me what should I study(I mean reference books etc.).
Readymade books for APFC exam
- Exams like APFC are not taken at regular interval, so whenever such exam comes, some bogus moneyminded publication houses, just copy paste few paragraphs and pages related to the syllabus topics, from other books and publish a Guidebook for APFC exam, containing 300 pages!
- After 1 month, These people will just change the book cover release the same content for Sales Tax inspector’s exam! Therefore such bogus quality readymade books or study material does not serve much purpose.
- Reason: Many candidates also prepare simultaneously for UPSC, State PSC, Banks, SSC and similar jobs therefore competitive level is always very high. You need to have your basic concepts clear and foundations strong. Don’t try to look for shortcuts using such readymade books. (Same Advice for RBI officer, LIC AAO and other similar exams.)
Cost Factor
The General Studies Manual (TMH, Unique, Spectrum) are quite expensive. They’re written for UPSC exam hence very thick and heavy. But the entire manual is not relevant for APFC exam, you’ve to do selective study of only a few topics. So better just borrow it from some friend or try to get an old copy.
Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) comprises the following major topics/ broad areas.
The medium of the test will be both English and Hindi.
Paper 1 General English
The questions in General English component of the test will be designed to evaluate candidate’s understanding of English language and workman-like use of the words.
Please go through the separate article on ( how to prepare English for APFC exam. Click Me)
Paper 2 General Studies
Note: whenever I mention NCERT, know that it is legally downloaded for free, in Hindi or English from the official website of NCERT (http://www.ncert.nic.in/ )
Now talking about specific topics under Assistant Provident Fund manager’s exam.

| Current Events |
|
| Indian Culture Heritage |
|
| Freedom Movements |
Note: Syllabus clearly says “Freedom movement” so read only Post-1857 period, no need to read Ancient (Harappa) or Medival (Mughals). |
| Population | Don’t know, what exactly this means! May be Human Geography class 11/12 book of NCERT could help. |
| Development and Globalization | See if there are some pdf files on www.egyankosh.ac.in (you’ll need to register there to download files, but it is free.) |
| Governance and Constitution of India | The best book ever written: relevant for all exams Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth (TMH Publication) Thorough revision for 5-7 times. Do all mock questions given at the end of his book. |
| Present Trends in Indian Economy |
You may also use
NOT Recommended Books: Mishra Puri, Dutt Sundaram, Uma Kapila. Because they’re written from academic point of view, we only need some basic and essential concepts from “Exam point of view”. Similarly I donot recommend Pratiyogita Darpan’s “Special” book on Indian Economy for its obsession with numbers and other trivial information. |
| Accountancy and Auditing | Use National Open School (NOS) material: Click MEYou can use NCERT books. I think class 11/12 has these subjects.OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in (may be in BA/MA Economics section) Or if they’re asking deep questions, you may use Unique Publication’s book on “Commerce” optional subject for UPSC. It has elaborate chapters on Audit and Account. |
| Industrial Relations & Labour Laws | Search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Insurance | OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications | If you’re comfortable with computers, then I don’t think any special preparation is required. Else use NCERT’s books on Computer (may be class 10,11,12) or may be Pdf files from www.egyankosh.ac.in for any certificate courses on computer. |
| General Science | NCERT class 7 to 10 (Freely downloaded from official site) (for additional grip) Science portion from Tata Macgrawhill General Studies Manual. |
| Geography | NCERT Class 7 to 10 (Social Science) + Class 11-12 (Geography) should be more than sufficient. And then you may solve the MCQs given in the (for additional grip) GS Manual. |
| Elementary Maths & Statistics | Many people appear for IBPS and SSC have really good grip over aptitude portion. They’ll also appear for Asst. Provident fund. Hence competition becomes really tough. One should be thoroughly prepared for maths and aptitude topic.
The standard reference books for aptitude would be (relevant for any exam starting from Bank Clerk to CAT) However, if you don’t have so much time to go through both of above books, may be you can use IBPS Manual of Disha Expert |
| General Mental Abilities | Same as above. |
There are only two rules to crack this exam
- For Non-aptitude (history, polity etc) Revise – revise – revise
- For aptitude (math,logical reasoning) practice- practice-practice.

@Kailas Don’t quote wrong figures unless you don’t have substantial proof.Nothing like 5 lakh candidates are appearing for this exam. For that matter no one can predict as this exam is happening after a long gap.Its ok that you are appearing for IB but don’t give free advice for not appearing for APFC just by spreading wrong news.

sir,
wanted to ask the difference between the new n old ncert???
ppl say that old ncert is only referable……..new ncert is wastage???
can you tell me which ncert???
thank you so much for grt help
old ncert = truckload of minute facts
new ncert= less facts and more analysis.
5 years ago, old ncert would have been useful because UPSC used to ask lot of minute fact based questions.
nowadays, trend has changed. so you can use new NCERTs.
thank you sir for your reply and thanks for labour laws also!
sir,
The ORA still does not appear in the registration screen is there any way that the copy of ORA could be retrived now
thanks
Which exam is better UPSC’S APFC or MHA’s IB exam as both are same date same timings?
simple…wat do u want? 40000 salary or 25000 salary? decide yourselves? working hard is commom for any of them….
hi friends , one of our friends is quoting that not to appear for APFC
but APFC salary is twice that of ACIO , candidates must decide now
yaa its upto the candidates….group a post or group b post.?
both exams are good but chances of selection in IB is More than 3 times as compare to apfc coz apfc has only 253 vacances but IB has 700 vacancies.
Both exams are good but possibility of selection is more than 3 times in IB as compare to apfc coz apfc has only 253 vacancies but ib has 700 vacancies & so its up to you..think & go ahead.
it depends on which category u r
general category have around 200 seats..
apfc has a higher rank
Hi,
Can anyone help me in getting admit card for APFC, its showing incorrect registration number but its the same which I got through mail.
better use internet explorer in case u were trying from other browser, make sure capslock is turned off, make sure u know that u made a successful transaction while applying for it? still if u are facing the problem search for examination cell number of upsc in http://www.upsc.gov.in and contact them…
mrunal sir
again please tell me upto which month, current affairs wl come in apfc?? past 6 mnths or 1 yr
expecting something like this is not possible but prepare from oct 2011 to till date for safe side, concentrate on major treaties happened around the world, heads of various organisations, developments in india across sectors etc etc…its better u follow civil service chronicle or pratiyogita darpan for this..
what would be the minimum % in english to qualify the exam
no seprate sectional cut offs for english .As negative marking hai to cut off 2004 k cut off se kam hi rehne ki possibility ,apart from this paper difficulty level will play a lead role
Hi,still not able to get admit card.could anyone get through any means?even helpline is busy and not helpful.
u still didnt get the admit card? i gave the forgot registration link also…didnt u try? wat is the problem?
sir what was the cut off in 2004??
cutoff for 2004 was UR – 71 OBC – 66 SC – 63 ST – 62 PH (OH) – 59 cutoff was high as there was no negative marking….
those who are getting msg invalid reg id…I think they shd use internet explorer for logging on upsc site coz some browsers like mozilla, crome not support official sites properly…they too can check diff in zero(0) or o(alphabate)..this too misguides sometimes…& probably reg id is case sensitive…so put alphabates in small or capital letters as mentioned in id….i dont know the exect problem but surely this helps u out …
in internet xplorer also Same prblm abhishek. only northern region had given hall tickets, but for south india we hav to wait for other 2 days
@teja it was mentioned abt Bihar and delhi only..
its ok @ MP, i belongs to Andhra pradesh, my hall ticket was not cuming, registration num was wrong it seems…
@TEJA.. see if u get ur correct reg id.. if probs than refer earlier mentioned website..
im unable to download admit card after following the forgot registration id option also…can smbdy help?????????
i have mentioned the link for forgot registration id…pls follow that link to retrieve ur registration id n password…look into previous comments or mrunal has kept the link on the homepage of this website…
CAN ANYBODY GIVE EXACT FIGURES OF CANDIDATES APPEARED FOR APFC EXAM AND IB ACIO EXAM .
WHICH IS EASIER ONE TO GET SELECTED .PLS GUIDE FRNZ
WHICH EXAM INVOLVES LESS MATHS
QUESTIONS .
I think these things shd be decided by the ppl itself..we shd not influence their decisions..greater or lesser salary is one factor..similarly no of vacancies too is another big factor…nature of exam as apfc is harder much diverse , lean towards subjectivity ..but ib is little easier & inclined towards much objectivity… what type of question..individuals preparation…his or her level of comfort with the pattern of exam ….condidering these thing one can decide…..
hi
please provide me sample paper and previous years paper for my mail id bansalmukesh80@yahoo.co.in
Thanks
@vishnu i tried dat link and also got my reg id but nw whn i use dat id, its showing “plz enter correct reg id”.i had called in upsc helpline bt its always busy.nw wat to do.
@Priya..need not to worry.. UPSC is sending mail with reg id.. You will soon be getting that..

Hi Vishnu,
As you had mentioned in earlier posts like approx 4lakh candidates have registered for the APFC 2012 exam. Its a huge amount considering only 2-2.5 lakh fill UPSC Pre.Also since IB exam is there and it was declared after APFC i think atleast 20-30 percent shift from APFC to IB considering higher probability of selection and less toughness of exam. But how authentic is this 4lakh figure.aakhir UPSC ka exam hai bhai koi SBI clerk ka exam nahi ho raha hai
i got that approx 4 lakh fig from an epfo employee in facebook epfo group where present employees are there…
