- Structure of the Exam
Many a times, sincere candidates fail in Government job exams because
- Relying on readymade guidebooks by “jholachhap publication”.
- They underestimate the level of competition and hence their preparation is not upto the mark. [although personally they may be believing that they’ve studied hard.]
Know that whether it is IAS exam or Bank clerk’s exam, competition is always tough and life is always cruel [thanks to our population]. Hence, The only way to make life easier, is studying harder and harder.
Readymade guidebooks for ACIO exam
As I keep saying: DONOT USE any readymade book such as “ACIO/APFC/CPF guidebook by XYZ bogus publisher. ”
Reasons:
- They merely copy paste few chapters from here and there, donot provide you comprehensive information / theory on any topic.
- Secondly, many candidates simultaneously prepare for SSC, LIC, CPF, IBPS and similar exams, so they’re really good both in GK as well as aptitude. You prepare from some ‘jholaachhap” book then you loose in the competition.
How to approach the Objective paper of ACIO exam?
I’m grateful to the good friend CSL180 for providing the inputs on previous papers of ACIO exam.
From the previous trend, it seems ACIO is more about GK than GS.
Difference between GK and GS
| General Knowledge | General Studies |
| Kaun banega crorepati kinda things. Mere knowledge of facts. “Who, Where and When” type of questions. | encompassing much more than GK, deals with important things of life- science, Constitution, History – why this and why that – so you need not only the knowledge of facts but understanding of events. |
| Who invented Telescope? | How does Telescope work? |
- In, CPF (assistant commandant) or UPSC (IAS/IPS etc.)- the questions are less related to GK and more related to GS.
- Usually the Class I and II officers’ recruitment exams have more GS than GK but for god knows why, ACIO paper almost entirely made up of GK questions only.
- For example “NABARD was setup under which five year plan?”,
- “OPEC was established in which year?”
- May be because ACIO exam isn’t conducted by UPSC and the Old professors who setup the ACIO papers, haven’t grown out of the 90s era yet.
- Anyhow, the moral of the story is, you shouldn’t prepare for ACIO exam, the same way you prepare for UPSC, CPF or APFC. This one requires similar books but different approach.
The books

I DONOT recommend Manorama Yearbook for GK, because
Therefore instead of Manorama, I recommend another book |
Topicwise Preparation for ACIO Exam
The NCERT can be freely (and legally) downloaded using this link Click ME.
The NCERTs contain GK information scattered throughout their chapters, Besides they’ve colorful photos and text, so they’re interesting to read.
General Knowledge
| What is asked in previous papers? | Recommended Book | |
| History | Xyz temple was built by which king? Xyz war was fought by which two sides? |
|
| Geography | Nothing from Physical Geography (Theory, atmosphere etc) Only “xyz place is famous for what?” “xyz thing is located at where?” That type of GK questions from Geography- both India and World. |
|
| Science | Who invented this and that? |
|
| Polity | Only GK For example “which article of Constitution contains provision for Constitutional amendments? |
|
| Culture | Location of Temples and fairs. |
|
| Stupid Current Affairs |
(ya, UPSC stopped asking such stupid things in Civil service exam but ACIO paper setter uncle-ji hasn’t learned the lesson yet, may the almighty give them some wisdom.) |
|
| Economy | Trivial questions like when was RBI established and when was NABARD established etc. I would expect similar GK from Current affairs based Economy. |
Current affairs material already suggested above. + Manohar Pandey |
Aptitude and English
The trivial GK is limitless, but brain’s memory has limits, so how do you improve your score?
Obviously, you’ve to score huge in English Grammar and Aptitude.
There are aspirants in this “competition business” for 2-3 years, trying for Bank, LIC, CPF, SSC and similar jobs, and they’ve impeccable command over English grammar/Reading comprehension and aptitude.
So if you make any excuse ki “meraa English thik nahi hai” or “meraa maths kamjor hai”, then you’re digging your own grave. Toppers donot fall from sky, they’re among you, but they’re just studying harder and not wasting time in giving such excuses or doing cut off speculation. So, If your maths/english is not good, then study hard and improve it. Know that every master was once an amateur.
English Grammar and Vocabulary
Sentence correction, Sentence arrangement, Reading comprehension, synonym, antonym, fill in the blanks etc.etc.etc.
Study approach and booklist is same, as given in earlier APFC exam article: Click ME.
Aptitude
Since you’ve applied for ACIO exam, I assume that your end goal is Government job of some kind.
So even if you fail in ACIO, you’d continue pursuing similar competitive exams such as IBPS, SSC, LIC, CPF etc. Therefore, I would suggest the aptitude books that can be used for all such exams.
![]() ![]() |
For ACIO exam, prepare upto level 1 exercises only from each each chapter. Ideally you should do all the sums from all the chapters, Including the Non-Verbal portion i.e. figure based questions.
And most importantly, no one can master aptitude by reading the solved sums alone. You’ve calculate them by your hand. |
Sidenote:
- If you’re running out of time, you may use IBPS Manual by Disha Publication

instead of the book #1 and Book #2 given above. But that’s like firefighting and such shortcuts are luck dependent, hence should not be used in normal case.
Essay
The ACIO 2012’s notification specifically mentions that
ACIO-II/Exe contains two papers namely
Paper I (Objective type) and
Paper II (Descriptive type on English language only).
The total duration for both the Papers is 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- It means you’ll have to write Essay in English (Paper II).
So how to approach this essay?
First read this article on how to write an essay: Click ME - Second, go through this book “A book of Essays by Spectrum Publication

This book has around 100 essays on various themes and topics, so you get enough fodder material for writing essays on conventional topics.
Apart from that daily newspaper reading: Either The Hindu or Indian Express.
How to read newspapers? Already explained in earlier article: Click ME.

HI Mrunal,
Good information.
TQ
Lavan
[Besides the small size of that book creates positive vibrations in the study room, hahaha]
Hahahaha , cant be funnier than this .
Note : I typed a big reply but the fucking corporate proxy fucked up and I lost the text. sign
Hi Mrunal,
Lets talk about negative marking and its effects on score\candidates etc. Most objective exams have +4, -1(4 options) marking scheme. Simple probability tells you that shouldscore +1\4 for every question you guess completely randomly. If the no. of guessed questions is low, say 4-5, then it might also result highly unfavorable result like all wrong(but still high probability that you got atleast 1 right). And it will almost always yield positive result when the sample size is somewhat large so the ‘science of averages’ nature of probability is more pronounced. But in my own opinion, leaving a single question is stupid if you are expecting to score mid or low lever score(75%-85%, then your discretion should be used, as even a -1 can hurt at that stage and the sample size of unsolved questions is reduced anyways.
This is all simple probability stuff which most serious and somewhat intelligent candidates have figured out. But not many have the heart and objectiveness of mind required to execute the same.
Second thing is, highly debatable and may as well be utter bullshit. But if you go ahead and find the probability of the correct option being A,B,C,or D for any randomly selected questions in objective exams(on an average, not for any particular exam), the numbers come out as B>C>A~D( in my own studies atleast, no credible data source exist). Now this is generally due to the psychology of paper-setter I guess and can and should be fixed by using computers to completely randomize the options. I would also point out that randomize doesn’t mean all 4 options have equal chances of being right, but simple that the probabilities cannot be reliable predicted beforehand. Of course people might post-mortem the answers keys and deduce their own results. See, I have contradicted myself, but have I? I would just say that I’d pick B or C over A and D every day of the week and twice on sundays, for marking any random question.
Thirdly, using brain and guts of steel to get ahead. How many time do you see an option “None of the above” as the correct option? Almost never. And how many times do you see a “All of the above?” as the correct one? Almost always. Now this is generalization which I am told is bad and besides there are some very smart people involved who makes sure to set questions which trap candidates using the above, especially in high level exams like UPSC, AIIMS, etc. Been there done that. But I think this is too much work for SSC and the likes.
Back in old days when I was preparing for brutal medical entrance exams, +4, -1 was gods gift, +3, -1 was the norm( which should yield 0 score for guesswork and you waste your time. But any serious candidate with a capable head on his shoulders knew that leaving any question unanswered was pretty stupid as he could almost always rule out 1 option and options can be arranged by their probabilty of being the correct one in their mind. Call it hunch or preparedness ut thats only for the serious ones) and you weren’t a man unless you faced exams with +2,-1 pattern. This brutality separated men from boys.:D
TO SUM UP :
Consider an intelligent candidate of IQ>100 who wants to get ahead of his friend who is at the same level as he but has read Mrunal’s guideline of “Avoid negative marking”.Instead of leaving 20\100 questions in exam he cannot solve or no time to solve, he would randomly mark them, giving more emphasis to B and C. Also he makes sure to mark All the above and mark any but None of the above. Job Done!
It hurts me to see very intelligent and capable friends of mine, inspite of being rational and understanding the maths behind the argument(atleast point one), fail to implement them in exams. Makes no sense to me.You should be objective and rational and brutal in the implementation to get those extra marks.
Source : PhD in taking objective papers for a decade now and generally avoiding failure. :)
Read the last part of first paragraph as :
But in my own opinion, leaving a single question is stupid if you are expecting to score mid or low lever score(75%-85%, then your discretion should be used, as even a -1 can hurt at that stage and the sample size of unsolved questions is reduced anyways.
Lost in transmission I guess.
sir, can i write essay in hindi or not
ACIO 2012’s notification specifically mentions that

sir,
we are having upsc apfc as on 23-09-2012 and the same day we are having IB EXAM there may be any chance of posponement of any one exam.
No chance. Both Home ministry and UPSC have taken it as a matter of reputation so neither side is going to back off and change its date.
Hi MRUNAL BHAI.. hw r u ? hw was ur prepn?
ACtually i am in a dilemma to attempt FOR which exam, i.e, either APFC OR INTELLIGENCE BUREAU ACIO…, BUT STILL THNKNG OF IT, WATS UR SUGGESTION ON IT?
more vacancies in IB (around 700) than APFC ( i don’t know may be 100)
So, on that logic, more chances of getting selected in IB than in APFC.
but then again, APFC got more salary, status and power than IB job.
Hi frnds.. if any1 wants IB ACIO prev. papers, mail me……….mandayteja@gmail.com or cal me @ 09052 831 404
