As per the handout, there are section cutoffs, negative marking but there is no ‘sectional timing’. They’ll throw all 200 questions you to at once. You can solve them in any order within 130 minutes
- Save your roll number
- Items to bring @Exam hall
- Computer Tests: A few tips
- GA: Don’t Mark n Review
- Comprehension: Mark n Review
- Online Exam structure
- General Awareness Sample Questions
- English
- Maths
- DI (Data interpretation)
- Reasoning
- Instructions for computer Exam
- General Instructions:
- Note for Person with Disability (PWD):
Save your roll number
AND after the exam is finished, please don’t misplace your hallticket/callletter. Note down your roll number in 3-4 places eg.
- your drawing room’s wall calendar
- as a contact no. in your mobile phone,
- In your certificate file (where you keep your graduation certi. etc.)
- in your google docs/ as your gmail contact
Otherwise when result comes, panic comes “I forgot my roll number, how I can check my result?”
Items to bring @Exam hall
- Admission Letter (you Must paste a passport sized photo on it)
- Photo ID card.
- One Ball point pen (although my advice, also bring pencil with rubber, that way, even if you have to make correction in some calculation you can do easily- comes handy in sitting-arrangement- blood relation type questions otherwise diagram becomes too messy, then you’ve to rewrite everything=time waste.).
Computer Tests: A few tips
COPY pasting the same tips from RBI assistant article
- In the pen-paper based test, if you don’t know answer to a particular question, you could mark it in the question paper, or write its question number at the end of question paper (in the rough space). And at the end of the exam, you’ll review that question and try to solve it again.
- In the computer based test, they also provide same facility. Under every question there is button for “mark/review”. You must make efficient use of mark/ review button. There are two ways to do it (whichever works fine for you).
Approach1 | Approach2 |

GA: Don’t Mark n Review
Don’t put GA (General awareness) question on “mark n review”. Reason: if you don’t know the answer for a general awareness question on the first time reading, there is very low chance that you can solve it by “mark and review” (unlike mathematics or reasoning question). Here in GA question, you’ll just waste time in mark-n-review, and in the worst case, your mind will seduce you into ticking some wrong answer based on guess-work, just to overcome to the imaginary cutoffs= score goes down thanks to negative marking.
Comprehension: Mark n Review
- Suppose, after reading the English paragraph, you’ve to answer five question but You can answer only 3 question. Remaining two question are difficult. Now you decide to put other two question on “mark and review”.
- Problem= when you come back to review the same question at the end of exam, the passage would have evaporated from your head, and you’ll need to re-read the whole passage again just for those two question =lot of time wasted. Therefore, solve all Comprehension questions at once after reading the passage, if you can’t solve any, then just leave it, don’t come back later for mark n review.
- ^Same advice for “sets” based on sitting arrangement, blood relation etc. Because if you mark any 1-2 question for review, you’ll have to re-read the whole description to make a new chart on sitting arrangement.
- Same advice for “sets” based on Data interpretation tables/graphs. (unless you’ve framed the equation correctly and just stuck because of lengthy calculation or division and hence decided to put it on mark n review.).
Online Exam structure
- Time limit: 130 minutes
- There is sectional cutoffs=Yes.
- Negative marking: -0.25 marks for each wrong answer
- Result for phase 1 exam will come in Sept/Oct. 2013
section | No. Of Qs | marks |
General Awareness | 80 | 80 |
English Language | 30 | 30 |
Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 |
Reasoning ( verbal ) | 60 | 60 |
total | 200 | 200 |
- The time for the test is 130 minutes; however you may have to be at the venue for approximately 180 minutes including the time required for logging in, collection of the Admission letters, giving of instructions etc.
- The tests will be provided in English and Hindi.
- You can attempt any question from 1 to 200 at any point of time within these 130 minutes. (unlike CAT, in which you’ve to face two sections Quant + DI and Reasoning + English.)

DI (Data interpretation)
Given below is a table showing percentages out of a total of 700 employees ranking six attributes that help promotion. Rank I is the highest. Study the table carefully and answer questions that follow :
Q. Which attribute for promotion has received the highest rank ?
- Perseverance
- Seniority
- Honesty
- Sociability
- Efficiency
Notice the percentage for rank I given in the table. You observe that seniority is the attribute with the highest percentage. So your answer is ‘Seniority’, which is answer No. (2).
Q. How many employees gave rank III to intelligence ?
- 119
- 98
- 77
- 70
- 10
Look at the intersection of the column giving percentage for rank III and the row giving percentage for
intelligence. You find that 10 percent of the 700 employees have given rank III to this attribute. 10% of 700 is 70. So your answer should be (4).
Q. Which attribute is considered the least important for promotion?
- Honesty
- Intelligence
- Perseverance
- Efficiency
- Sociability
Reasoning
For reasoning, RBI simply copy pasted the same questions from Assistants’ Exam handout.

- black
- red
- green
- paint

Ans. Of the five, ‘black, ‘red’, ‘green’ and ‘yellow’ form a group as they are names of colours. ‘paint’ is not the name of a colour. Therefore, is the answer. Now try to solve the following questions.
- Find odd
- BC
- MN
- PQ

Directions : In each of the following questions, there is a question mark in which only one of the five alternatives given under the question satisfies the same relationship as is found between the two terms to the left of the sign :: given in the question. Find the correct answer.
- Foot : man : : hoof :?
- leg
- dog
- horse
- boy
- shoe
Ans. In the above example, ‘hoof’ has the same relationship with ‘horse’ as ‘foot’ has to ‘man’. Hence the answer is (3).
Now study to solve the following questions.
- Day : Night : : Kind :?
- Dark
- Bright
- Cruel
- Generous
- Gratitude
- Hut : Mansion : : Rabbit :?
- Hole
- Carrot

@ Vignesh.,
They’ve no such botherations . I’m a B.E ., I worked n accenture earlier., I didnt study well and performed poorly in RBI mains N that’s y i couldnt clear it., Many of my friends who went to the interview got some marks and they;re in service. OF course, mains score is vital here irrespective of interview’s weightage., If the panel is biased, God can only help ., In that case if our mains score is good. we’ll get through..
My best wishes..
@ RS Kumar. Thanks for clarification. I saw in ur comment that in dec 2011 rbi exam cutoff was 114. However I couldn’t see the link for it in mrunal page. Can you pls provide the same?
Yet my final semester result of graduation is awaited..it may come before 24 August,2013.Am i eligible for RBI grade-B exam or not???? please reply…………
I have applied for RBI exam and exam is on 24 August,2013….i am confused ……please help
Someone plz try to find out the weightage thing this time
I’m unable to post screenshots here.,I’m extremely sorry it was not from mrunal.org and it was from rajmengalam.com but now the page is not there. When the Dec18,2011 final results were announced with marks in phase-2 , some one got it mixed up with Feb2011 mains selection.. and in some sites they’re showing this for Feb2011 final selections.. Strictly this is from DEC2011 results which my friend joined RBI on (final results published on oct-2012) Jan2013 . , Roll no.1707000291 , From chennai., She joined in chennai @ 21Jan2013. Her results page shown these cutoffs., 170 (Gen) 155(OBC) for call up to interview , and ultimately 203(Gen) 192.5(OBC) for final result.. from mains. When she joined she came to know her prelims mark which was 121 and the cut off for GEN was 124 in prelims., This time with the vacancies being more i can assure you that the cutoff will not cross 125. for prelims.,Imagine this vignesh , In Feb paper 50 Ga ques carried 80 marks and in that case the cut off was 104(Gen) and now its 80 q for 80 m ., so possible increase cannot be more than 125., Of course , the time remained same. , Now they’ve changed it. which looks quite tricky coz this leads to increase in sectional cutoff for Eng and QA ..,
Once again., My best wishes.
I’m leaving my city today and i can’t comment anymore further., Going to my native., Sick Leave :)
@ RS Kumar.
Thanks a lot for your clarification. I need to contact you on a couple of points regarding this. Please mail me your contact number @ vignesh119@gmail.com
@rs kumar dont try to fool the aspirants for the phase 1 exam held on 18 dec 11 the cutoff for general category was 100 only. OBC – 90 according to RTI filed by me. so dont try to create fear in mind of aspirants. all the best work hard.
@ INSPIRACION bhai.
Can you please copy and paste the RTI reply here? Thanks
@vignesh site not allowing to paste..
your right cutoff for gen was 100. obc was 90 and was st. even i had filed a rti
@ INSPARACION bhai, can you please send it to my mail id vignesh119@gmail.com
I have lost my mobile the had the sms with registration number. any other way to retrieve it.
@ INSPIRACION
With all due respect , mind your words.
Right from my first post , i’m telling cut off will not be high., I’ve been replying for SOURAV’S comment at beginning at explaining to all that cut off might not go beyond 124. I’m not trying to fool anyone , I’m just telling to take the limit higher for better results. target for star to land on moon., That 120 was given by RBI selected candidate upon viewing it in HR department. I’M ALWAYS SUPPORTIVE. ., PLS READ MY EARLIER COMMENTS. . AND SOMETHING SAID BY SOURAV THAT CUT OFF WILL GO +30., This time since there’s no sectional timing i just ensured to work hard.
My best wishes to you..
@INSPIRACION
Also , i want none of us to take chances., Lets predict higher. Safely clear and prepare for mains…
I’M NOT CREATING ANY FEAR., I’M NOT THAT JEALOUSY AND I’M HAVING ZEAL FROM SUCCESSES OF ALL ASPIRANTS LIKE ME
@ INSPIRACION
Rs kumar just instills with his experience. I knw my friend in mumbai who shared exactly similar in what he’s said. Of course like he said the cutoff will be 104 – 124 which i ascertained from his earlier postings. No offense dear. Let this be healthy discussion and no harsh words.
