Speed of result delivery
- Written exam was taken in the last week of April 2013.
- Final result comes in the first week of Aug 2013.
- Approximately just 100 days, and recruitment is done. (despite the fact that ~17 lakh candidates had applied for the PO job.)
- Perhaps UPSC, SSC and State PCS should learn something from SBI.

Selected…but in huge dilemma, whether to continue preparation for UPSC or join SBI. Have cleared UPSC prelims also, Doing it with self study as I hardly get 4-5 hours after office and cannot waste it in travelling to coaching institutes.
Don’t do it if you want to study for UPSC-CSE. SBI will the suck the life out of you. You won’t be getting any time in SBI.

Congratulations..I would suggest you to take up the job. I got selected for SBI in 2011 but didnt join as I wanted to devote time for UPSC..but unfortunately dint get past interview stage in 2012. Now giving one more shot at UPSC. And I couldnt clear SBI this time.. so right now jobless and without UPSC and SBI.Its true that work life in SBI is hectic,but if UPSC fails you, then u still have a job to fall back to. there is no guarantee that you will clear SBI next time. This is from my own experience.

You should go for sbi..as deejay is right
I too tried doing the same.. :) but they dint gave me any extension. They grant extension only for medical exigencies. Cook up some believable story (wrap yourself up in plaster and take a photo) and tell them that u r not in a position to attend training. If they still dont allow, then join SBI and take leave from mext day onwards. :)

I agree with Deejay. You will have to come up with a very strong reason to get extension. Last year, one of my friend gave reason as CSE-Mains examination to get extension for 1 month and He got extension for one week (so did not join, though he cleared CSE and is an officer now). This year, I am in same dilemma and appearing this year for CSE-Mains (last year reached upto interview and failed by few marks) and looking for extension. Suggestion from my same friend- give any reason but the CSE. Another way could be- attend training for 1 month and after that go on leave (Don’t know if feasible, yet to get more details about it).

i understand that in pvt banks, there is lot of work. But is it the same case in public bank like sbi? Arent employees get free around 6 in the evng?
rahul, my dad works in sbi. he gets free by 6 .. but his scale 1 people under him works till 8 and even on weekends.. atleast first 2 years even in pub. banks presently expect u to work 9-9 .

Since your dad works in SBI, Could you please tell me (after, of course confirming from your dad) is it only the huge amount of routine work which SBI employees find hectic? Or does SBI also like pvt sector banks demands targeted business growth and NPA recovery from employees, esp. new ones which becomes more difficult to achieve month after month? I am already working with a PSB as Scale-I officer for one and a half years now and have been selected in SBI, and now in a dilemma about what to do!
I second Pagal. If you are not desperate for a job, I’d recommend not taking up SBI. I have experience working in another Public-sector bank and it is bad enough. SBI will totally suck the life out of you. I’ve heard of PO’s say they cant leave their branch before 9 PM after going in at 10 AM.
Remember, thousands of persons r in queue for ur seat in SBI, so join in job 1st, u can face UPSC mains with more confidence, bcoz u r in a well settled position/job. IF i’m in ur position, surely i’ll do this only.

Could you please share your experience of GD and interview. What all questions were asked to you, how did it go etc..?
In GD our topic of discussion was “Whether formations of the short states are beneficial for the nation or not”
= I spoke in the support of division on the basis of linguistic lines not on basis of political lines . History = Potty Sriramulu fast till death and UP being the 5th largest administrative unit. Federalism..etc.. It was good but out of 12 candidates 5 (including me) gave good points…
But Interview was a disaster.. I was expecting questions on Economics but they asked questions only about 2nd world war…. I gave 2 out of 5 right. Another person asked me about Greece and telengana , Since I had only prepared about Reverse Repo, Repo,Bank rate and all economic jargons , I could tell them only what I had read in newspapers but they were satisfied. Last Person asked me about the nature of my present Job.
It did not go as I wanted , Had I been rejected it would have been no surprised to me. But to my Surprise I got selected, My performance in written was very good may be that could be the reason. Only Marksheet will tell me the true reason.
what i feel reason behind asking world war questions is to know if you r also preparing for IAS and SBI dont want to recruit some good IAS aspirant who can leave job soon.those ques. were asked to not to answer.

One bird is in hand is better than two in the bush. There is no guarantee of selection in UPSC Mains and there is no guarantee of repeat successful performance in SBI PO either. At the same time, it simply is not possible to get much time preparation for your Mains, while continuing as SBI PO.

They are yet to declare the marks,So cannot say anything.. I attempted 40 in GK ,48 in English, 35 in Maths (It was very easy, I could do all but had to shift to logical because only 30 minutes were left) Did only 21 in Logical(It was seriously tough, I had to rush and some were blind guess work)…. I dont think I did more than 14 right in logical, So the Sectional cut off cannot be more than 14 in logical, rest I am not sure about….

You have to decide which job you want to get into. I am also working in bank, I can share with you from my experience that to prepare for UPSC exam being in PO job in any bank is an extremely difficult task. In my Bank, PO officers leave the bank after 8pm. They work from morning 9.30-8pm. After bank hour, you hardly get any time to prepare. Hence, if you are happy with banking career and probably prepare for UPSC 2014 from now on. Being in SBI PO and 2013 Mains look quite difficult. Be decisive, and take a strong decision. Sometimes to get our goal, we have to take risk.
What bank do you work in? PSB or private bank?
Can remaining candidates check their results ? I want to know my marks.

having given prelims and not qualified I am completely lost.
was getting around 80 in paper 1 and 160 in paper 2.
Total around 240.
I gave my best as much as I could. Took a lot of help from your blog, did not take coaching… etc. But no idea, what to do now!

Paper-I was pretty easy this year in comparative sense, and Paper-II, in it score of 150 approx is normal- its like minimum eligibility to get in the competition, if you cant score that you are out.
you got 40 in correct in paper-I, well that was good for last years paper but this year, i guess 45+ should be minimum.
If its not your last attempt start next years prep, also consider an upside, you dnt have to face surprise in mains(new syllabus).

I am confused about csat.. did everything i cud this time.. (practiced every material i could lay my hands on.. despite being an engg. i feel 160 is less.. ) please suggest ways to improve csat…. In present scenario getting effectively 65 correct (with 15 questions evening out with correct and wrong)

Cleared the po from kolkata circle…. But facing similar situation as most of the candidates that I see in the posts, of giving the mains this year. I hope they delay the joining as much as possible. … After that I would apply for extension. Are they stingy in granting extensions. Ny ideas.. kya museebat hai….itni jaldi karne ki kya padi thi inko….;)…

Thnx Sonali…actually my interview was in Delhi on 12th I opted for the kolkata circle as my first preference…given the ratio of 1:2 n less weightage to interview n gd marks written would definitely be the make or break factor unless gd/interview was screwed up….I guess I would consider myself lucky that questions were based on current economic scenario n not on my Engg background , which is a big emphatic zero, but the board was very cordial n since I have been studying for upsc for the past year I guess I could answer all questions asked….questions about banks, cooperatives , basel 1 2 3, why basel, issue regarding environmental clearances policy paralysis….maharatna navratna …some questions about my hometown jamshedpur etc etc upsc prep does give an edge….n Delhi crowd was highly competitive all in my panel of 14 ppl were good… based on the quality of gd…nywayz d questions were based on current economy n reading papers would do apart from general knowledge stuff n obviously its good if u r an upsc aspirant… No separate preparation required then (at least I could say that in my case) focus more on speed in written that should see u sailing thru…interviews can never be generalised so max marks at written stage n a good base of current knowledge would b more than sufficient…n also I found that people had preconcieved notions about attempting questions in written based on previous papers…dats suicidal esp as this years papr was on the easier side…so plz take care on that count…
Ha haa haaa… it think SBI is like Bullet train, rather then Rajdhani EXP(UPSC).
During my interview (in Delhi), I had inquired about the joining date from the one of the facilitator. I was told that chances are very fair that joining would be from 1st Sept (I doubted at that time, but now it seems imminent or utmost-could be delayed by not more than couple of weeks). Is saal, inko bahut hi zyada jaldi padi thi tabhi to interview bhi jaldi hue aur result bhi jaldi aa gaya. :(

Over and above the amount mentioned , you will be eligible for ptrol allowance , house rent allowance and other miscellaneous stuff. The 8 lacs p.a. mentioned is for Mumbai circle and that is because the housing allowance is close to 29 k for Mumbai . If you are posted in a rural area the allowance is considerable lesser.

No chance of postponing your joining date. Take it or leave it.
@Prasad , are you sure ? The HR at the interview venue told me that extension of the joining date is possible.
Yes. to get that extenstion of joining date, you need to cook up some medical reason which will be referred to a medical board which might as well result in rejection of your candidature and consequent unnecessary pain.
or say you are in a company & have to serve the notice period ,in that case also you can give an undertaking
