- First Task: Back up plan
- Other competitive Exams
- PG Degrees via Distance Learning
- Why IGNOU’s Distance Learning Programs?
- IFS, IES, Statistical Services
- Pick up some Activity
- Second Task : UPSC attempt for 2013
- August to November 2012
- January to May of Next year (2013)
- Coaching or no Coaching?
To those failed in UPSC CSAT-2012 and willing to re-appear for 2013. What to do for next 9-10 months?
First Task: Back up plan
- Given the uncertainty involved in UPSC adventures, it is not a good idea to put all eggs in one basket.
- Please note there are no cut and dry methods of “backup plans for UPSC”, so evaluate all the pros and cons based on your personality and alternative-career ambitions.
- Those MBBS, CA, IITs etc. need not worry much about “backup”. But for the others ….here are some suggestions.
Other competitive Exams
- Try for other competitive exams [IBPS (Bank), CPF, SSC, State PSC, CAT,CMAT etc.] to prevent yourself from getting rusted and as “backup” plan.
- I suggest all of you subscribe (Free) to Sarkari Naukri Blog. Here is the link . It’ll give you daily updates regarding vacancies in Government, PSU and Bank jobs.
- The question always comes: How to manage time? Well most of them have overlapping syllabus with UPSC as far as GS is concerned.
- But some of them are aptitude heavy (IBSP for example) so study two more books
- Quantam CAT by Sarvesh Kumar Varma (Arihan Publication) – for the math topics. Do upto Level 2 excercises of every chapter, and you should be able to walk scratch free, through every battlefield from IBPS to SSC.
- RS Agarawal’s book on Verbal and Non-Verbal Aptitude. – for Logical reasoning questions.
PG Degrees via Distance Learning
- Those with optionals like Public Administration, Socio, Political Science, History (ie. courses for which IGNOU offers PG Degrees), I suggest you pick up Distance Learning Post graduation course from IGNOU. Fees are very low so If you’ve Sociology then go for M.A. Sociology. (These courses are also available in Hindi Medium)
- It’ll help you hit two birds with one stone-you get their quality study material + you get PG Degree at home.
- Third bird = doing JRF, Ph.D etc and become a Professor in worst case scenario.
- Yes most PG courses have duration of two years. But according to IGNOU rules, they can be completed in a span of five years. So you can give exam for first year in 2013 and second year may be in 2018.
- You may try for some other courses of IGNOU like MCA, MBA etc. depending on your alternative-career ambition.
Why IGNOU’s Distance Learning Programs?
- If you join a regular course from a decent college: fees will be high and, there will be hardly any time left for UPSC preparation.
- IGNOU courses are quite easy to crack. You don’t have to prepare much for their term end exams (just solve last five years’ paper (available on their official website)- all questions are repeated!).
- So go to the official website of IGNOU and download the free Prospectus and see details of all the courses offered procedure to get admission.Click me to download that PDF file (ENGLISH).
Click me to download that PDF file (HINDI).
For more, Visit: http://www.ignou.ac.in/ignou/studentzone/downloads/3
- And IGNOU’s distance learning programs are recognized under UGC so your Degree is ‘legit’ for all Government job exams.
- And Given the “academic inflation”, every tom dick and harry is now a Post Graduate. So if and when you go for private company job interviews without PG degree in your file= doesn’t look good.
IFS, IES, Statistical Services
- You may also go for IGNOU courses in Economics or Statistics to become eligible for UPSC’s Indian Economy Services (IES) and Indian statistical services.
- If you’re an Engineer (non-IT field) or B.Sc with Agri/Zoology/Forestry etc. courses then try for Indian Forest Services (IFS).
- But please goto the official site of UPSC and check their notifications and eligibility criteria for each of these exams.
Computer Course Certificate
- For Bank Exams and some State PSC exam (such as GPSC), you need a fancy certificate to prove that you know computers. (Even if you’re proficient with computers without formal degree or course, you still need a certificate in your file.)
- So Give an exam called “CCC” [Course on Computer Concepts].
- It is conducted by DOEACC, [new name is National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology], which is an autonomous society under Government of India, therefore its fancy certificate is ‘legit’ for Government job exams (just like IGNOUs’).
Pick up some Activity
- For example some NGO work, Part time job, social service or anything else that can look good in your biodata file during Interviews of UPSC, Bank, State PSC or private company. It’s not like you’re going to study for 18 hours a day from 1st August 2012 till May 2013. There are plenty of hours that can be utilized to make your “file” look better for the interviews.
Second Task : UPSC attempt for 2013
August to November 2012
- Devote entirely to finish the syllabus of your two optional + GS (Mains)
- And make revision notes of both optional subjects and for Static portions of GS Mains, including 2 marker freedom fighters.
- ^ this is essential / compulsory / must/ no excuse.
- Apart from that, you can
- Prepare Skeletal essays for last 19 years’ papers. https://mrunal.org/2011/12/analysis-essay-topic-trends-in-last-19.html
- If literature is one of your optional- then go through all the good reference books and write high quality answers for all of last 10 years’ UPSC papers. (reason: in most of the literature Optionals, the questions are repeated.)
- + Maintain current affairs diary from daily newspaper reading. How to read newspapers- already explained in this article: https://mrunal.org/2012/06/current-affairs-ias.html
- So next time whenever you clear prelims, much of your time will be saved in doing first hand study / notes making. And then you have to only do revision + current affairs + answer practice.
January to May of Next year (2013)
- Preparation for Preliminary exam 2013. Study plan would be more or less the same as given for CSAT 2012 earlier in this article: five part article series on how to prepare for civil service exam
Coaching or no Coaching?
- Some of those who failed in CSAT 2012, are asking “should I get coaching for next attempt?”
- Well, coaching is not the panacea for UPSC. And please donot have the mentality that “I failed in CSAT-2012 because I did not have coaching.”

I failed 3 rd time in prlims of civil services. Please tell me i am open category student, what to do now?
Dont worry Minal.. I am also in the same boat. Wasted a proper 1.5 years without after quitting job and gave my third attempt. Despite coaching, dint clear. Gave earlier two attempts with job, naturally dint clear :).. Now I am getting offers from the same IT industry but in a dilemma to give the last attempt with job or without..
If you don’t mind me asking, how will you explain your 1.5-2 year hiatus when going for IT job again? I am getting in the same boat as you, thats why asking.
Best of luck for whatever you do and keep strong!
dont worry Abraham licoln says” without divine assistance i cant succeed and with it i cant fail.” so keep faith in god. best luck. i m facing the same.
Minal bhayya, 1st thing ,forget failure –
1)U r not defeated until u accept it,there are people who cleared in 7th attempt. and In one survey it was proved that people who kept 100% efforts in civils n failed are better settled in Life than ppl who cleared.
2)Try preparng for sme central govt job exams + next UPSC prelims exam.bcoz i heard ppl workng in central govt jobs get age relaxatn.
3)We must do our best n leave rest 2 god.Watevr hapens itz gud.Believe it,more than all please come out of pain, deprestn kind of tngs…Pleaseeee…Exam is small, poblms r small tngs – Life is BIG.V Must Enjoy evey sec n every tng v do,bcoz next minute what happens, we donno …
u r right Archana, I appreciate and Iam agree with u..
very thoughtful archana
I am general category candidate. I am not qualified in UPSC CS(P) 2012. I think for general, one has to aim for top 1000 in prelim. to get qualified. But still I want mrunal to talk more on it. Strategy seems to be different.
Hello Mrunal, I’ve been using your site for the last 3 years. It’s been a great guidance for me. More than the matter it has helped to get an extensive view of the exam.
In the above article, under “Pick up some Activity” you had mentioned about NGO, Part time job, social service, something which looks good in bio data. I’ve already thought of something like that. Are there some more ideas or activities you can suggest. It would be great help. Thanks.

Gents, Are you sure Mains examination pattern will be same as this year so that 2 optionals can be prepared till November end? Can you tell about it please. I think if pattern was going to change than by this time it must have been announced by UPSC. m i right??
(according to RTI reply) “Committee yet to submit report about when to remove optional subjects”.
I had read your post of RTI reply already in which UPSC has not clearly said about pattern change and just mentioned about committee has to submitt report. Sir I was seeking your opinion for this, is there chances that committee will submitt report soon and patten would change form 2013 itself, please?
Hi Bhuve! karmik Rajya mantri V. Narayanswami ne Lok Sabha me question ke answer me ye jawab diya tha ki “year 2013 me Mains pattern me koi change nahi hoga” ye jankari Competition Success Review me bhi hai.
This was my first attempt I was confident of passing the exam. Please tell me how to read a book? Should I make notes while reading or should I read and re-read it 3-4 times? Please clarify this. Thank you. You are a great motivator.
Hi mrunal,

MK
Hello To All,
This is my first post….So i want to say one thing to all aspirants those who disqualify in prelims…..delete all the evidence that you work hard for something(IAS 2012 or earlier) because if we work hard for anything then no one can make me stop……investigate the things that where you lacks & try to eliminate in next year….As an example i was an extremely dull student from CBSE board, even i got also failed in class 12th but after 12th i took admission in BCA(Graduation) & then MCA (Post Graduation). At the time of admission in BCA i kept in mind that, this is the time to prove myself & we need to study(Because i havn’t Father), till date i can’t see back & every time i got topped the college & today i am a BCA(Hons.) & MCA(Hons.)…….So need to feel nervous…… Be energitic & go beyond the limit to create yourself…..i am also trying to preperation for IAS 2013(FIRST TIME BY SELF-STUDY)…Inshallah agli baar(next time) hum sab log training karenge Mussoorie mein…….Best of Luck To all of You….KEEP ROCKING….. ({At last Extremely THANX To Mr.Mrunal to host this type website which helps a lot to the aspirants…… })
Amen to that…brother.Hope ur words come true…
Sorry, mistake in 8th line “So no need to feel nervous” instead of “So need to feel nervous”….
Anyone please suggest some good online source for Environment & biodiversity, website on Nature, India’s Flora & Fauna.
Hi all candidates! I have qualified in CS(P). I have Pub. Ad and Hindi Literature…………….kya koi mujhe bata sakta hai ki hindi literature ke liye specially IAS ke liye kaun si books hai?
Thank god I applied for IGNOU MA(pub ad) this year and I applied for almost all jobs which satisfy me.
good. I’m also in MA Public Administration (Second Year) from IGNOU.
Mrunal bhaiya can u plz tell us abt the PAPER structure for MPA…and also abt difficulty lvl of paper.
BTW Im a big fan of ur blog.I ws surprised when i heard that u culdnt qualify even though ur vv intelligent and resourceful than all of us…what abt ur last remaining attempt(I know u hav 1 more attempt left)?we all “MRUNAL BLOG FANS” would request u 2 plz give it a try @2013(and give our dear UPSC a chance 2 correct its mistakes of the past). Also the country needs such officers like u.I believe that “our country does not suffer due to violence of bad people, but it (definitely) suffers due to SILENCE of good people”. If (REALLY) GOOD guyz like u turn ur back to govt jobs how can we create the country which our founding fathers dreamt of??PLZ reply 2 this request…PLZ PLZ PLZ……
P.S= I would gladly vacate my seat @upsc (if i ever get selected) if i come 2 know that u will b occupying it…
Same here!!!btw did u complete the Tutor Marked Assignments? Just after result was declared.I started writing TMA’s and today i jus completed the last one…what abt u?
I’ve marked the pages in those booklet containing the assignement questions.
all that remains is a good action movie on Dish TV and I start copying answers while watching it.
VV true!!!!
How come the time is shown as “5:19 pm “are we’re not on IST?
I am pretty bad at quantitative aptitude/logician reasoning questions.I have an IBPS book and the solutions are not explained properly.Should i even buy CAT book that you have mentioned.
Yes. Sarvesh Kumar Varma has written that book in such a way that after each chapter, the exericise Level I and II will help you for IBPS/SSC etc.
and Level III (labelled as “Final Round”) for CAT/XAT exams.
sir, please give me gs guidance for engineering service.
pls help us with details and instructions for filling mains form
Thank you Mrunal. All my four attempts are over. I attempted first three attempts as JBPS. I personally feel studying parallel with job not giving 100% effort will not be fruitful for UPSC. Every sincere aspirant will definitely qualify. Make balanced preparation. I am over confident about 2nd paper. Which is the mistake i have done.
Bye Bye to UPSC. Trying state PSC exams.
Sorry to hear about that.
All the best for all your future endeavours.
How to tackle comprehension mrunal….

Hello Mrunal,
Thats a wonderful job you are doing. I must compliment you. I have also thought for appearing for CSE 2013 and without fearing the removal of optionals decided upon History and English Literature as my optionals. Well I’ve been searching for the last 10, 15 or 20 years CSE question papers (mains) for these and not getting much help. You seems to be a resourceful guy, Can you publish the list of previous years question papers for at least History mains in one of your articles. That would be of immense help for us all.
Thanks.
Hi mrunal……..Want to know which optional to opt for Indian Forest Services as the optionals are quite different and cannot be prepared with IAS..A person failed in IAS exams cant take the risk of IFS and some totally new optionals.
