Raj Kumari Gupta crucial contribution to the Kakori dacoity. She supplied revolvers to those involved in the Kakori operation, apparently hid the firearms in her undergarment and set out in khadi clothes to deliver them.
Tara Rani Srivastava participated actively with her husband Phulendu Babu in the Quit India movement. She marched with the national flag straight towards the police station in Siwan, Bihar.
Abadi Bano Begam freedom fighter from Lucknow, known by her honorific ‘Bi Amman’. She spoke in a public gathering, on behalf of her jailed son, she did so from behind her burqa in 1917. This was, perhaps, the first time a Muslim woman in purdah had addressed a political gathering.

Her victory in the November Congressional elections is said to be a certain, which will make her the first Hindu American to be a a member of the US House of Representatives. Gabbard’s victory was cheered by the Hindu community.

    Jin-Yong Cai, with over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry and development, will be the new Executive Vice President and CEO of IFC. Prior to this appointment, Jin-Yong had served as the Participating Managing Director in Goldman Sachs Group.

    Wing Commander V K Singh is an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot who flew his helicopter through a hail of bullets fired by Naxals and safely landed the damaged aircraft while evacuating security forces from a deeply forested area in Chhattisgarh. He has been awarded Sharuya Chakra.

    Rohullah Nikpai is Afghanistan’s only Olympic medallist (Taekwondo), who won his country’s first-ever Olympic medal at the Beijing Games — a bronze in the 58-kg category, repeated the feat with a bronze in the 68-kg category in London.

    Raj Kumari Gupta – Born about a century ago in the little-known Banda zilla of Kanpur, Raj Kumari Gupta and her husband worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and Chandrashekhar Azad. Her crucial contribution to the Kakori dacoity case barely figures in the narratives of freedom. Raj Kumari, who was given the charge of supplying revolvers to those involved in the Kakori operation, apparently hid the firearms in her undergarment and set out in khadi clothes to deliver them, with her three-year-old son in tow. On being arrested, she was disowned by her husband’s family and thrown out of her marital home.

    Tara Rani Srivastava was born in Saran near Patna and participated actively with her husband Phulendu Babu in the Quit India movement. On Gandhiji’s call, Phulendu assembled a massive crowd of men and women in front of the Siwan police station to hoist the national flag on its roof. The just-married couple stood in front of the crowd and raised slogans. Phulendu soon fell to police bullets but Tara Rani was not deterred. Demonstrating exemplary courage, she bandaged his wounds and marched with the national flag straight towards the police station. By the time she returned, her husband had died.

    Rao Papineni is a nanotechnology scientist from Hyderabad India who recently got his cancer treatment research patented in United States. He along with his colleagues has invented a system in which a nano-particle carries the payload of anti-cancer drug and releases it only in the cancerous cell, thus protecting healthy cells around. Currently working as chief scientist and senior principal investigator in medical applications of nanotechnology at Carestream Health, Inc USA, he filed for the patent in 2009. The title of the patent is ‘High Capacity Non-Viral Vectors.’ The non-viral vectors are nano-particles.

    Aditi Mukherjee is the recipient of first Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation in 2012. She is a senior researcher with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in New Delhi. Mukherji’s work on groundwater resources in agriculture led to major policy changes that benefited thousands of farmers in West Bengal. Mukherji worked closely with the farmers, and took her research data directly to the government, meeting with representatives of the Planning Commission, the West Bengal secretary of water resources, and secretaries of agriculture, finance and rural development departments.

    K.G.Subryamnyam is a contemporary Indian painter who was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2012 by GOI for his painting legacy. Subramanyan is as revered as an artist as he is as a theoretician and art historian. His chief contribution as a theorist has been the rigorous re-contextualization of Western theories and practices in the Indian or Oriental context, as well pointing out the fundamental differences between the Western and Indian social realities, namely the problem of art/craft division of the Indian artistic traditions.

    Richard Stallman is the champion of the Free software movement.One of his most famous interventions in free software was the GNU general Public Licence(GPL), which he devised around 1985 as a general licence applicable to any program.The licence codifies the concept of “copyleft”, the central idea of which gives “everyone permission to run the program, copy the program, modify the program and distribute modified versions, but not permission to add restrictions of their own”.

    Balu Sankaran who recently passed away on June 20, was a professor, scientist and recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Vibushan awards. He helped establish an artificial limbs manufacturing corporation and a rehabilitation institute.He was one of the medical greats who, together with doctors like V. Ramalingaswami (former director-general of the Indian Council for Medical Research), B.B. Dikshit (first director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS) and C. Gopalan (former director, National Institute of Nutrition), laid the foundations of medical education, medical research and healthcare in the country. He was a former director general of health services, and director of the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

    Anish Kapoor is the Padma Bhushan awarded of 2011. He is an India born British sculptor, making nes because he was the sculptor behind the ArcelorMittal Orbit, commissioned as a permanent artwork for the Olympic Park and completed in 2012.

    Kamal Bawa, is an Indian-born professor of biology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He is the 2012 winner of the Gunnerus Sustainability Award, the world’s first major international award for work on sustainability. Bawa, also a faculty fellow at the Centre for Governance and Sustainability, home of the Global Environmental
    Governance Project, is known for his
    research on population biology in
    rainforest areas. His span of work includes biological
    discoveries made in Central America, the Western
    Ghats, and the Himalayas in India.

    Vandana Shiva – Indian environmental philosopher and activist Vandana Shiva has been chosen for 2012 Fukuoka Prize, a prestigious award being bestowed by Fukuoka city government in Japan on people who contribute to academia, arts, and culture in Asia.
