Rohullah Nikpai is Afghanistan’s only Olympic medallist (Taekwondo), who won his country’s first-ever Olympic medal at the Beijing Games — a bronze in the 58-kg category, repeated the feat with a bronze in the 68-kg category in London.
Raj Kumari Gupta – Born about a century ago in the little-known Banda zilla of Kanpur, Raj Kumari Gupta and her husband worked closely with Mahatma Gandhi and Chandrashekhar Azad. Her crucial contribution to the Kakori dacoity case barely figures in the narratives of freedom. Raj Kumari, who was given the charge of supplying revolvers to those involved in the Kakori operation, apparently hid the firearms in her undergarment and set out in khadi clothes to deliver them, with her three-year-old son in tow. On being arrested, she was disowned by her husband’s family and thrown out of her marital home.
Tara Rani Srivastava was born in Saran near Patna and participated actively with her husband Phulendu Babu in the Quit India movement. On Gandhiji’s call, Phulendu assembled a massive crowd of men and women in front of the Siwan police station to hoist the national flag on its roof. The just-married couple stood in front of the crowd and raised slogans. Phulendu soon fell to police bullets but Tara Rani was not deterred. Demonstrating exemplary courage, she bandaged his wounds and marched with the national flag straight towards the police station. By the time she returned, her husband had died.
Rao Papineni is a nanotechnology scientist from Hyderabad India who recently got his cancer treatment research patented in United States. He along with his colleagues has invented a system in which a nano-particle carries the payload of anti-cancer drug and releases it only in the cancerous cell, thus protecting healthy cells around. Currently working as chief scientist and senior principal investigator in medical applications of nanotechnology at Carestream Health, Inc USA, he filed for the patent in 2009. The title of the patent is ‘High Capacity Non-Viral Vectors.’ The non-viral vectors are nano-particles.
Aditi Mukherjee is the recipient of first Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation in 2012. She is a senior researcher with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in New Delhi. Mukherji’s work on groundwater resources in agriculture led to major policy changes that benefited thousands of farmers in West Bengal. Mukherji worked closely with the farmers, and took her research data directly to the government, meeting with representatives of the Planning Commission, the West Bengal secretary of water resources, and secretaries of agriculture, finance and rural development departments.
