Anyways, lets’ start with each section
Approach: Reasoning for LIC AAO 2013
The reasoning questions in LIC exam, run almost parallel to that of SSC CGL and Bank PO.
So, the Recommended Book is as usual: RS Aggarwal’s Modern Approach to verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Then the question is, how to prepare reasoning in systematic manner in the given time? Do it in following manner:
#1: Chart based
- This includes: Direction sense test, Sitting arrangement (rectangle, circular, building, lecture schedules etc.) and blood relations.
- I club them together because in all of them you’ve to make rough diagram / chart / table to solve it.
- Here is the order in which they should be prepared:
| Sr.No | Topic | RS Aggarwal Chapter No. |
| 1. | Direction Sense Test. | 8 |
| 2. | Sitting arrangement: circular | 6 |
| 3. | Sitting arrangement: rectangle | 6 |
| 4. | Sitting arrangement: “table” based e.g. lecture schedules, job-car-cloth color, building-car-newspaper etc. | 6 |
| 5. | Blood relations | 5,6 |
- Sr. No. 2 to 5 are more important because if they’re asked, it is usually a set of 3-5 questions based on one case.
- These topics don’t have any straight-forward theory or formula as such, therefore only way to gain speed and proficiency= via maximum practice. Otherwise you’ll be stuck in just one set for 15-20 minutes and yet get wrong answers.
#2: Analogy, Odd man out
They usually ask a set of 3-5 questions.
| Sr.No | Topic | RS Aggarwal Chapter No. |
| 1. | Analogy | 2 |
| 2. | Oddmen out | 3 (chapter title is “Classification”) |
Analogy and odd men can be of two types:
- Word based.
- Number based.
If it is word based, you don’t need pen and paper, you can solve it in your head and proceed.
If it is number based, then depending on your proficiency (and luck) it may be very easy question for example
- Find odd man: 13,17,21,23. (ans. 21 because it is not a prime number). So this is quick and easy.
But at times it can be difficult and may require lot of trial and error for example
- 182::?::210::380. Find “?”.
^in this case, you may not not be able to see the pattern immediately. It may take you five seconds, it may take 5 minutes. Therefore, My advice is that during the computer test, whenever you come across such questions, you click the “Mark/review” button, proceed to other questions and then solve these marked questions at the end of the exam.
#3: Math ops
| Sr.No | Topic | RS Aggarwal Chapter No. |
| 1. | Math ops | 13 |
| 2. | Ranking | 12 |
| 3. | Dictionary based arrangement | 10 |
- I club these together, because in each of them you’re given some instructions and if you follow those instruction carefully then you can get answer without mistake. It doesn’t require any trial and error (unlike the coding-decoding type).
- Math ops are important because it is usually a set of 3-5 questions.
#4: syllogism
“All cats are dogs,…” statement and conclusion. Usually a set of 3-5 questions. First Understand the UP-UN method explained here
Then do all the questions given in RS Agarwal’s book Section II, Chapter 1 : Logic.
#5: coding n series
| Sr.No | Topic | RS Aggarwal Chapter No. |
| 1. | Coding-decoding | 4 |
| 2. | Alpha-numeric sequence puzzle | 11 |
These five are the main / core areas for LIC AAO exam.
Peripheral
These are not asked every year. So they don’t form the “Core” part. (although it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare them, because on a few occasions LIC has asked these in their AAO/ADO exam)
| Topic | RS Aggarwal Chapter No. |
| Non verbal reasoning | last part of the book. |
| Eligibility Test | 18 |
| Input output | 7 |
| Statement assumptions | Section II, Ch.2 |
| Data sufficiency | 17 |
Tip on Computer based Tests
- In the pen-paper based test, if you don’t know answer to a particular question, you could mark it or write its question number at the end of question paper (in the rough space). And at the end of the exam, you’ll review that question and try to solve it.
- In the computer based test, they also provide same facility.
- Under every question there is button for “mark/review”. I suggest you goto following page and see how computer based test (CBT) “looks and feels”
http://www.catiim.in/CATPracticeTest/index.html
- You must make efficient use of mark/ review button. There are two ways to do it (whichever works fine for you).
Approach1 |
Approach2 |
|
|
- If you’ve got MK Pandey’s reasoning book (for the SBI high level reasoning), you should also use its chapter for on math ops, input out, sitting arrangement, blood relations, and syllogism – for getting maximum practice. Although there is no need to specifically get MK Pandey only for LIC exam. Because RS Agarwal’s reasoning book is more than sufficient – as far as reasoning is concerned.
Approach: Maths, Quantative aptitude for LIC
Maths of LIC is pretty much the 90s era Bank/SSC tests = few questions on BODMAS, algebra, percentages, average-alligiation, Time speed work distance and you’re done. So, If you’re a serious player of SSC/IBPS, then it should hardly pose any challenge to you.
How is LIC maths different from SSC CGL?
- Trigonometry not asked
- Geometry not asked (only mensuration asked – that Is area, volume, perimeter)
- Coordinate geometry not asked.
How is LIC maths different from IBPS/SBI PO?
- LIC’s data interpretation questions are very cheap and easy compared to them.
ok, Question (again) is how to prepare it in a systematic manner?
- Ofcourse you can just mugup a few formulas, practice a few questions from book. But that’s like firefighting / desi-jugaad= not good.
- Why? Because apart from LIC, you’d also be preparing for IBPS, SSC, CDS, CAPF, ONGC, CSAT, CAT (depending on your taste). So better approach is: first get basic concepts clear (from NCERT etc), then try maximum questions.

Book for Quantitative aptitude?
- If you already have RS Aggarwal’s book on Quantitative aptitude, it is sufficient for LIC Exam.
- If you don’t have it, I would suggest go for Fast track to objective arithmetic by Rajesh Verma or Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Kumar because they help in other exams as well. (RS aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude book doesn’t have good coverage for geometry, trigonometry topics that come in SSC CGL, plus these new books have given explanations in more lucid manner .)

Approach: General knowledge and current affairs
If you look at very old papers of LIC AAO (2005, 2006..), they even used to ask from History (Ancient, Medieval, even world history!), geography (physical, india, world), science (physics, biology) and so on. But nowadays, it is mostly related to current affairs.

^You update it with whatever new stuff happens. For that you can hit the library, go through issues of Pratiyogita Darpan, Wizard, Chronicle, competitionmaster, whatever you can get for free. (there is no need to exclusively purchase magazine solely for LIC).
Insurance related GK
- Read this article: https://mrunal.org/2012/09/economy-insurance.html
- Also download the (free) studymaterial for Insurance (given in appendix) that zip file contains
- 1) Insurance knowledge handbook released by IRDA
- 2) NIOS chapter on Insurance service
- 3) India Yearbook 2011’s few pages on insurance. (although its info may be outdated but basic / history of LIC, GIC etc is relevant).
- Visit: www.policyholder.gov.in/Default.aspx this website is created by IRDA for consumer awareness about insurance. You’ll find lot of useful insurance GK worthy of being asked in MCQs.
- Also visit the official site of LIC to know about their latest schemes
Economy, polity
- Economy theory: NIOS PDF files, NCERT Class 11. (download links in the appendix of this article) for Economy current affairs, compilation will be released in upcoming days (just like I did with person in news, space, defense)
- Polity: if you’re a UPSC / State PSC aspirant then Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth, otherwise NIOS PDF files (download links in the appendix of this article). There is no need to specifically get Laxmikanth only for LIC.
Others
- Geography, science, History: NCERT, +/-NIOS, +/- Lucent’s GK Book.
- if you’ve already prepared these things for SSC CGL or UPSC or CAPF etc, then it is well and good, but otherwise, beyond the basics, these topics are not worth dwelling into, exclusively for LIC AAO- given the cost benefit ratio, even after factoring the sectional cut offs.
Approach: Computer
- In the old times, LIC did not have exclusive section for computer / IT questions. But this time (LIC AAO 2013), they’re going to ask 30 questions exclusively from Computer / IT section alone.
- If you already have some book for Computer for your BankPO/IBPS exam from Kiran, Arihant, BSC, GKP etc publication, that’s well and good. Read, revise it multiple times.
- If you don’t have any book on computer then no need to specifically purchase a book because NIOS (National open school) runs various courses on Computer/IT/Web-design/Software programming and provides free PDF files. I’ve attached them in the appendix of this article.
Approach: English grammar, comprehension
| topic | AAO 2009 | ADO 2010 | ADO 2013 |
| Sentence Arrangement | 0 | 5 | 5 |
| Sentence Correction | 5 | 10 | 10 |
| Comprehension | 0 | 7 | 5 |
| Fill in the Blanks | 10 | 5 | |
| Vocabulary (Syn, Antonym, Fill in Blanks, Analogy) | 15 | 3 | 0 |
| Total | 30 | 25 | 25 |
- for LIC AAO 2013, they’ll have 40 questions on English worth 100 marks.
- Again, LIC English section runs parallel to that of SSC, IBPS. Except that SSC has specific sets of active/passive, direct/indirect speech, idioms and phrases while LIC doesn’t.
- For vocabulary, the difficulty level isn’t as high as SSC CGL so it doesn’t require exhaustive or exclusive preparation as such. (otherwise the tips were given in SSC CGL article click me)
- For comprehension, and Sentence arrangement = do maximum practice from old question papers of SSC, IBPS etc.
- For sentence correction / spot the errors / fill in the blanks: first understand the rules from grammar book and then do maximum practice for old papers of SSC, IBPB etc.
- For grammar book, If you already have grammar book (R.S.Agarwal, A.P.Bhardwaj) etc. use it. If you don’t have any book, I suggest you go for objective general English by SP Bakshi (Arihant Publication).
Job Profile: LIC AAO (Administrative Officer)
Courtesy : Shri Sumeet from Orkut forum who has written following regarding Job Profiles of AAO,ADO. (and Mr.CSL80, who sent it to me. I’m just copy pasting:)
- There are two wings in LIC where a Direct Recrutee AAO can work: 1.) Administrative 2.) Marketing
- Initially AAO will be given administrative responsibilities where u will be made HOD of a deptt. Or even more than one department Like New Business, Claims, Policy Servicing, Office services, Aaccounts..in every dept.
- You have to take the responsibility of all the works related to that dept.
- After two years you can get the chance for job rotation and move to marketing side as Asstt. Branch Manager(sales).
- You will get a car worth Rs. 5.50 lakhs.
- The work pressure is immense and those thinking of joining LIC as AAO and prepare for UPSC etc. You must be clear that its not possible at all once u r in LIC.
- Well Initially you have to join as Asst. Admin officer only….after 2 years of confirmed service in the cadre you will become eligible for marketing assignment as Asst.Branch Manager (Sales).
- Its your choice ..but since there are lot of promotee officers who are desirous of becoming ABM(s), the competition becomes tough, though Direct recruit AAOs are given the preference.
- And there is nothing like targets n all for AAOs…these targets are only for ADO…so be cool and prepare hard.
- Yeah the salary is under revision and is due w.e.f from Aug 2012..cant say the exact quantum of revision but in hand salary will definitely be 35k+
- In addition to this you will be entiteled to Rs. 125/- per day as meal coupon(sodexo) for each working day +600 as entertainment allowance+400 mobile expenses(confirmed AAOs)+ reimbursement for any one financial news paper
Job Profile: Bank PO vs LIC AAO
- SBI PO is ahead in terms of perk and allowances.
- Promotion are time bound…i mean there is no separate departmental or any other exm to give to out of term promotion. The promotion duration as of now is long..like it takes about around 6-7 years for an AAO to become AO.
- Though things are expected to change in future. Probation is for 1 year.
- Regarding postings, since it’s an all India cadre u will be posted to any part of the country.
- During our time most of the AAOs had got home or nearby divisions
Job Profile: LIC ADO (Development officer)
- Recruiting and training agents to sell life insurance products
- ii)Providing support and service to policy-holders
- Travelling within allotted area
- LIC ADO is a different sort of job and you cant compare it with the bank jobs
Negative Factors (ADO)
- LIC ADO is purely a marketing job and it takes your time & energy to lead & generate the business.
- The work pressure will be high & should achieve the minimum target at any cost as a DO.
Positive Factors(ADO)
- No restrictions and you can work independently with your own working strategy and techniques without any intervention and the bottom line is your minimum targets which you have to achieve.
- An number of earning opportunities. You can earn in Crores if you have the abilities of leading the team, generating the business and the coordination of your entire activity effectively with customer satisfaction.
- Considering my opinion, For science graduates, non commerce graduates and for those who prefers marketing job, this is a dream job.
- The essence to work in LIC in terms provide the Safety, Security and other perks with ease as it is a Central Govt. Undertaking.
- it’s a TARGET BASED job..
- Basically, LIC will not fire u in d first two years .. & the salary is not bad it’s approx 14000 but the sad thing is during this period of 2 years they’ll give u extensive training dat how to promote/sell insurance policies. (counter view: Mr.Chetan says, “i want to reply on this statement I was terminated by lic of india in 2012 for non completion of sales target, i was terminated while in probation of one year.
- And after this you’ll be awarded with a target ,& if u couldn’t achieve your targets they will…
- So d conclusion is If u have a deep interest in marketing, then dis job is damn good, because you’ll get enormous chances for your growth.. also we shouldn’t forget that other perks, incentives & bonus always there.
- End Of Copy Paste

Guys english paper is just qualifying in nature! Idiots haven’t informed us before.
I attempted all the questions in english and left questions in quants and reasoning! :( Can i approach the court since they havent intimated anything regarding that pattern change? Did anyone else do the same mistake??!!
one day before thy publish in d newsspaper , abt ths change , tht eng mks is not to be counted for rank.
also in the guidelines inexam also mention ths ,tht english is jst qualifying .
I thnk if u hav accuracy in d ques u attempted …u can surely can crack d exams :)
I attended the exam of Lic aao today, the numerical part was very tough, it was online exam , and the questions were really tough, i wd suggest that guys pls do numerical practise many of the question s got left out due to time shortage , although i attempted 20 and most of them are correct.
Refresh ur gk , as gk was average, and computer was quite very easy, reasoning was okay, not too tough but again not very easy type, english was avg …. A special reminder , there were no questions asked from indian polity or economics or geography so don’t waste ur time in those subjects ….Go for normal GK based and current affairs ,
I will share some questions with u , like eg – NBFCs new atm card what is the name – WLA , then all women bank sanctioned in Budget with ___ amount , ans- 1000cr, computer – terms cd, what is the work of CPU ?, which is a volatile memory, which among the following is not an input device , etc,
I wd suggest that u people concentrate on NA , and RA , as these questions are tougher , GK and Computer u guys wd be able to manage if u follow a good gk book or computer knowledge book. All the best !!
LIC exam was of moderate level
english = i got little bit difficult
reasoning = moderate level but not so tym consuming
equality questions, series questions, syllolism, sitting arrangement ,data sufficiency
maths = easy = pie chart type questions, find d value of x typ ques
computer was moderate
gk was mainly frm banking , scheme abt rsby , 2 questins naming book, economic survey
i gave my lic exam on 11th may afternoon session. It was the easiest paper I guess. 2-3 qns were asked from the sbi po 2013 exam as well. Numerical abilities section was time consuming with lengthy calculations requiring square roots of 178-225 and cube roots of 2 and 3 digit numbers.
all the best to all others who have exam after 11th.
yes i got thier Emial abt d chnge in notification after my exam was over…this is ridiculous..bastartds dnt even know when to modify notification..Idiots of top level…
yeah man even i got the mail yesterday oly after the exam got over. Even if they have intimated that 2 days back thor’ website they could have done that in the examination hall! Fucking bastards! Never thought that the senior fellows there would act this stupid! I attempted 137/160 and all english qns. If i had known i wouldn have spent this much time on english! Some of friends are going to approach the court in this week to cancel the examination. Lets see how LIC reacts to this!
wat will be the cut off for gk section
I shall get
reasoning — 15 out of 30.
quantitive — 23 out of 30
computer — 25 out of 30.
G.K — 19 out of 30.
english — 28 out of 30.
what are my chances to get the interview call letter for lic AAO 2013 exam?
English section contains 40 qns.
If u got 100% accuracy, u’ll get 164 Out of 300 Marks.
ie 54%, which I think for a General Category is too low.
Let’s see. All d best.
Sorry, My calc went wrong.
U’ll get 202 out of 300.
There’s a possibility to get into the shortlist.
guys i have attempted exam may 12
my attempts are
resng 28 moderate puzzle was tough
maths 24 lotsof calcultns
gk 28 most from gk not even single qsn from budget
computers 28 asusal cake walk
eng 21 moderate i have dbt in this sect
guys what r my chances?
Can anybody tell how’s english section came topic wise who already attempt the exam?
Wrote LIC AAO 2013 today(12/05/13) 9.15 am. Paper was moderate-easy IMO however found numerical ability bit calculation intensive and didn’t do as well I had hoped to.

All I believe is more or less correct and so would like to my chances and I’m from general category.Hoping for a reply.
get to the court man..this is not acceptable from a national level recruiters…whatever will happen now, 1 thing is sure dat LIC is full of Idiots..arey yar xam ke baad notify krne ka kya matlb…childish act..pity on d loosers of LIC..
respect 2 all ppl associated ovr here,,1st f all cngratz mrunal for ur generosity of guiding the youth..we all can see ur endeavours and promise 2 pay it thru our success..i attempted todayzz lic aao exam..i attempted 113 out f 160 and another 15 were marked for review so in total 128 i think..quant was hard bcoz there were lots of calculations and questions were there frm average, probablity, perm and combination..for reasoning there was syllogism and puzzle and coded inequality which was there in greater amt..fr eng there wer 40 ques of whch i attempted 37 but marks will nt be counted so kinda disappointd..and in gk there were ques frm finance like whz sign is there in 10 rupee note..full form f emi full form f shg..and jacob zuma is the president f whch country..so anybdy wd gud basics in bth gs and enthusiastic in current affairs will nt face any problm..
by d way i have a question to mrunal and all..i want a genuine reply..what will be the overall and sectional cutoff fr lic aao exam??because i am frm general category..and i clear d written and interview bt do nt find a place in d final merit list fr meagre marks or %..so plzz answer my query and give d correct info,,waiting fr every1s reply..all d best fr every1 n upcomin exams and warm wishes..
SINCE THERE IS -VE MARKING ONE SHOULD BE CAREFUL WHILE MARKING SINCE THERE WILL ONE FOURTH -VE MARKS MEANS FOR 4 WRONG ANSWER ONE CORRECT ANSWER IS LOST AND IF UR SURE OF THE ANSWER THEN U GO AHEAD TO ANSWER THE QUESTION,AND AS PER MASTER MIND MURNAL ANALYSIS CUT OFF WILL STAND FOR 60-70 % CORRECT ANSWER AND SINCE -VE IT MAY COME LESS THIS TIME —-HOPE FOR THE BEST
I have attempted the exam 12 may evening shift some people missed the information about English section it was only qualifying so don’t spent too much time on this section.
Now come from initial level
Reasoning section-Moderate level
question based on inequality,coding,puzzle,syllogism,misc
Numerical-lengthy calculation get some extra time for this section
G.A.-Easy level
only general awareness no GS so focus on current sport, finance, planning some from banking and insurance related term
computer level-easy level
u find di ques in quant correct as answer didnt match the options i think di ques were wrong as many said
todays lic aao exam in morning time is very easy except maths section where a lot of calculation is required but friends it will be good to use assumption rather than indulging in actual calculation otherwise you will loose precious time. I have attempted total 133 question including 37 question from english section.
reasoning section is easy & scoring too i attempted around 23 question in it
maths section is some what lenthy & involves calculations.
g.k section is so easy & if any one read banking sector from economy survey & insurance.
computer section is so simple.
I will get atleast 200 out of 300 except english section ,i want to know whats are my chances to get interview callletter
plz shilpa what are my chances reply me

ALL THE BEST
ranswitzer as in from NERIST?
LIC AAO on 12th may 2013(AN)-
Reasoning- standard one(specially question dealing with ,=) Attempted 27 of it. Sure of 20 ques to be right.
Maths- Stretched time in calculations but not much complex. Attempted 24 of it. sure of 18.
GA- That was a cake walk. Economy, insurance and stuffs not much out of this. Attempted all of it. sure of 29.(except the LTV question)
Computer- This too was lame. CPU, ALU, sys software, app software. Attempted all of it. sure of all.
English- Questions were asked from very few areas. like rearrange, comprehension, grammatical error etc. stretched little time in reading the comprehension(this happens in every exam). Attempted all of it. But may loose 3-4 ques due to time constrain.
I am giving this exam for first time. I was expecting more high level paper specially in GA section. If in case the sectional cut off is set high I may slip in math. Other than that paper was good. Fingers crossed :)
whr can i get answer key of lic aao exam 2013 and what is the cut off?
hi friends i gave exam on 12th of may 2013 in the afternoon session i am going to give detailed experience as well as tips :-
My attempt = 131 out of total 160
i dont remember section wise as they took back the rough answer sheet but i missed 10 from english , 1 from reasoning , 3 from quant, and rest from Gk and Computer. (im less of a Gk guy and more of a GS guy)
1.GK
Insurance related terms are being asked, and also there were questions regarding the main Govt owned insurance corporations
LOL :- there was a question WHAT DOES “C” STANDS FOR IN LIC…. and on top was written ” LIFE INSURANCE CORPORATION AAO EXAM”
some candidates in my batch got questions regarding bugdet allocations for various banking and allied services like , Farmers club, Bse 500 + dow jones islamic index, RGESS limits, SHG , Women bank, Ques about Gold ETF, . DO memorize imp numbers regarding this.
president of kenya, BRICS summit, do study imp events and personalities.also some question reagarding sports events and terms if u read news paper daily no need for any special prep.
2.COMPUTER
Mrunal sir’s material is sufficient , there are some (2-3) epic questions here, dont bother as some questions are meant to be left unanswered.
3. Reasoning
Syllgolism – good questions (study options carefully)
Data sufficiency- below average (cheap ones)
Math operations – they have , = signs (practice these) else you may get stuck
Inference – 1 got i got others got many so practice Sir’s methods
FLOOR ARRANGEMENT – this was toughest in whole paper.. noobs cant do it, normal players cant do it quickly, it took me 15 mins to solve and i solved it in 4th attempt, there were so many possibilities.
Ranking = normal difficulty.
4.Maths
Mostly approximations – do SARVESH VERMA 1st chapter , some vedic maths for multiply , square and cube and their roots will help a lot else you may get stuck like some of people i just read about. DI was normal but do practice
Keep an eye on options of approximations they are far away numbers so dont panic and dont try to be 100% accurate
others didnt get any Permutations and Combination questions but i got 2 had to skip them as i dont even remember basics.
series is good if u dont practice u wont be able to do half of these, mostly square and cube series.
5. English
NOT FOR RANKING
Do 1 line questions dont go for passage as it will consume time but 3 questions i did of passage about word meaning in bold i took a few seconds.
Idioms and error detection was below average.
Tips :- max marks are of Reasoning and Maths, regarding Gk do get info from as many people who took the exam
at 1st i got stuck in floor arrangement solved 2 times = didnt work so i left for later
20 mins left i completed exam and came back to it, then my whole 1 side of rough sheet was consumed by it and in 10 mins to spare i solved it (checked all statements twice) rest 10 mins i read some Gk questions…
Do read others experience especially Gk as some are getting repeated some are not..
All the best
thanx
LIC— C for Corporation LMAO :-D
Yup the Floor Arrangement Q was way complicated. I wasted 5 mins on it and was nowhere near solving it. At my centre there was some problem and many candiates including me had to face Hanging PCs—- the screen would just hang, cant select any option or go to another Q for a few seconds and then zoooom xx seconds gone.
Read the budget details and sports events’ winners/venues if you are still to give this exam…
u attempted di ques in quant section?? was it of containing no of students and pie chart of no of teachers in that??
i gave my paper in 1st shift on 11 may. i was doing the paralleled line question of reasoning and my system locked out due to system glitch. i wasted my 4 minutes on that question and at last have to leave it unattended. i oppose the online system of evaluation.
Reasoning- 19
Quant- 19
GK- 24
Computer- 30
English- 31
Assuming 100% accuracy, I’ll be getting 222/300
What are my chances of getting a call for interview?? I am from general category.
Overall score is good.
But I think ur score in Reasoning & QA is low.
There’s sectional cut off.
Since the exam is easy, sectional cut off may be around 65-70 % for General.
Hope for the Best.
what are the chances for total cut off?
if u r confident abt ur accuracy then definitely u ll b qualified for interview.
because the number of vacancies has become more than twice compare to last year…
