Vs. CSAT-2013

| CSAT-2013, History | CSAT-2014 |
|---|---|
| History culture occupied 15 questions | 20 |
| Freedom struggle portion: 5 questions, all easy from routine books | same |
| Culture portion 8 MCQs: moderate to difficult level | 15 Culture MCQ. Although 9 of them directly from routine books / sources. |
| Harappa/Indus valley asked | nope |
| Tough Question about Foreign traveler and same “genre” repeated in subsequent CDS-CAPF exams | Did not ask |
| Question on Bhakti Saints Dadu Dayal, Guru Nanak, Tyagaraj | Dadu Dayal asked again. |
| Sankhya school, tough question | Easy question on philosophical schools |
| Rock cut caves | Cave Sculptures |
- Every subject that rises to the top and then falls down.
- Once upon a time Geography used to occupy 20-25 questions, now back to 10 questions.
- Same way traditional history (kingdoms and wars) used to occupy 20+ question, now not even a single question.
- Right now Culture is reaching the peak but perhaps after 2-3 years, it’ll also begin to decline (which will be good to reap the demographic dividend, by the way!)
Vs other exams (CDS, CAPF)
| CAPF, CDS (2014) | CSAT-2014 |
|---|---|
| CAPF: Building not associated with ShahJahan | Akbar’s Ibadat Khana |
| CAPF: Who were Ahadis? | Who were Mahattara and Pattakila? |
| CDS: correct statement about Mahajanpada. | Which place (Mahajanpada) Buddh did not visit? |
| CDS: Match the temples with towns | Monetary vs place; sculpture vs place |
| CDS: Freedom struggle rather too easy- most can be solved from Spectrum, TMH, Tamilnadu textbooks | same |
| CAPF-2014: Freedom struggle rather tough questions. e.g. Who translated Nil-Darpan to English; Name of regiment whose soldiers who participated in 1857 mutiny and were cremated recently? | Freedom struggle very easy. |
| Harappa asked | nope |
| Buddhism-Jainism asked | Only Buddhism |
Difficulty Level
Debatable, depends on preparation level. Nonetheless, I classify them to prove two points
- You don’t have to tick 100/100 because no one can.
- Good number of questions from regular books / websites and they’re easy in nature. Therefore, coaching not essential for success.
Easy Questions: Given verbatim given in routine books
| Bijak & Pushtimarg |
|
| 6 schools of philosophy | List Available in NIOS, Lucent, TMH. |
| Ibadat Khana | available in NIOS, Lucent |
| Garba, Mohini, Yaksha |
|
| Kalaripayattu | Given in NIOS. Routinely appears in theHindu lifestyle. |
| Satyamev Jayte | Verbatim answer in India Yearbook ch.2 National emblems |
| Chaitya month | Same as above. Although some players may have downplayed this chapter because UPSC’s earlier trend of moving away from GK facts. aka Double Bluff backbreaking move TM. |
| Classical language | List appeared TheHindu and PIB of Feb 2014 when Odiya was added. Therefore, had to be memorized like God’s own words. |
| Freedom struggle | All five questions available in Spectrum, TMH, Bipan Chandra, TN state books. |
| Panchayatan | Available CCRTIndia website, but difficult to recall during exam |
| Sattariya dancers | Given on ccrtindia but there are 50 dozens terms like this. |
Ridiculously Difficult
When answer not available directly in the routine books and/or nearly impossible to recall in exam.
|
Even after “smart” elimination, you’re left with two options and everything boils down to just one fact- whether Buddh visited Avanti or not? |
|
Who has time to memorize so much data? Better invest energy in preparation of maths, reasoning and comprehension for CSAT- Paper2. |
|
Hard to dig whether Vishnu saving Goddess earth is given on Mt.Abu or not? |
|
Random article on Indian express. And even if this was given in books. लेकिन यार इतना डिटेल में कोन प्रिपेर करता है? |
|
Had to dig through random google books. |
How to prepare Culture for CSAT-2015?
First we have to objectively check which sources were useful?

| Total utility | 1.5 | 3.5 | 0.5 | 2 | 5 | 1.5 | 4 | 9/15 |
Disclaimers:
- 0.5 means =half of the answer available. (i.e. two statement true/false type question).
- Last column: “fell from sky”- Ans. No means the given question was available in atleast ONE standard reference book / source. Total 9 out of 15 =60% culture questions came from standard sources.
- It could be higher than 60%, e.g. lucent /TMH/Spectrum may have Sattariya or Mangniyar somewhere but because of time constrain I have not been able to wade through all pages.
So, how to approach Culture?
- (MUST) Tamilnadu Class11 (Ancient-Medieval) + New NCERT History (Class7 to 12) + New NCERT Sociology (Class 11, 12)
- all of them available at Mrunal.org/download
- Although not much came from TN/NCERT this time.
- But one exam insufficient to through them away. They’ve proved their worthiness in CDS and CAPF 2014.
- those who have old ncert well, and good but those who don’t have- there is no need to lose sleep, Tamilnadu works just fine.
- (MUST) Base material = NIOS Culture material + CCRTindia
- You don’t have to manually wade through all webpages of CCRTindia, because in earlier [Write2win] competition, Sandeep Yadav had compiled the note from that site, including photos. Click me. (although his note is bit old, some new pages have been added by that website, so you might have to manually make visit add few new topics accordingly).
- (MUST) India yearbook Ch1, 2 and 3. [for geography, culture, polity respectively].
- (MUST) TheHindu. Classical language, dance- all routinely appeared in 2014’s newspapers.
- (if time permits) General Studies manual.
- As such maximum no. of questions from it but if you look at the table again- it has lot of overlapping with NIOS. Compared to NIOS, the GS manual is too bulky, contains lot of unnecessary factoids. So beyond a point, bad cost:benefit.
- But practice the mock questions given at the end of each section in GS manual.
- I’ve used Tata McGraw-Hill (TMH) general studies manual 2014 as reference because they gave me free review copy.
- But any manual works just fine- Arihant, Spectrum, Pearson. Even old/second hand used copy works fine. Because static content remains one and same, irrespective of edition.
- Beyond this, Cost:benefit wise, you’ll gain more from pumping that more hours in learning maths, reasoning and comprehension for CSAT Paper II. so don’t waste remaining jawaani in preparing culture only.
- You may skip Spectrum Facets of Indian culture. Because content wise, did not help much in the Mains-2013 or in prelims (CSAT-2014). It has cumbersome typesetting, no photos. Therefore, hard to memorize. Situation similar to Congress seats under Modi wave.

How to prepare History for CSAT-2015
| freedom | TN | Spectrum | TMH | LucentGK | Bipan Chandra | fellfromsky? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bengal partition | 1 | 1 | no | |||
| Congress session 1929 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | no | |
| Gadar | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | no | |
| Victora’s proclamation | 1 | 1 | 1 | no | ||
| Redcliff | 1 | 1 | 1 | no | ||
| Total utility | 3 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 1 | 5/5 |
- Disclaimers same as previous table.
- TN= Tamilnadu class 12 History textbook.
- (new) NCERTs are good read but I’ve not used them in above comparison table because they don’t cover enough factoids, policies of past governor generals, their policies etc. So, you’ll have to augment It with some other book anyways. therefore TN class12 is better as the base textbook.
Anyways how to approach History for CSAT-2015?
- (MUST) Tamilnadu Class12 [or OLD NCERT] as a starting textbook.
- (Good) Spectrum’s Brief History of Modern India, By Rajiv Ahir. (Available in both English | Hindi medium)
- Although TMH General studies Manual and Spectrum both have same number of questions but spectrum far thinner and easier to revise. and has proved worthy even in Mains-2013
- Bipan Chandra has its utility in the mains, essay. It should be read depending on the time factor. As far as only prelim preparation is concerned, you’re better off with Spectrum because it’s far more revision friendly than Bipan etc.
What about Ancient and Medieval?
- In the 90s exams, it used to be Vedic age, Ancient kingdoms, Medieval kingdoms and freedom struggle.
- And now it’s just Freedom struggle and Culture. Whatever they ask from ancient-medieval, it’s mainly focused on culture part. so for Ancient-medieval, refer to Culture studyplan given above.
- Besides, in Tamilandu Class 11 already covers the kingdom angle e.g. kings vs religion patronized, king vs monument, king vs policies and so on.
- Related: How to approach History for Mains-2014: Click me
anyways, enough analysis, let’s begin solving the paper:
[Act 1] Religion and Philosophy (3MCQ)
Buddh & Avanti
1. Which of the following Kingdoms were associated with the life of the Buddha?
- Avanti
- Gandhara
- Kosala
- Magadha
Select the correct nswer using the code given below.
- 1, 2 and 3
- 2 and 4
- 3 and 4 only
- 1, 3 and 4
To get a better mental picture, first let’s find modern day equivalent of those places
| 1.Avanti | Malwa |
| 2.Gandhara | Western part of Pakistan and Afghanistan |
| 3.Kosala | Districts of Faizabad, Gonda, Bahraich in UP |
| 4.Magadha | Patna, Gaya, Nalanda in Bihar area. |
Viewpoint #1: Avanti is right
We can eliminate choices involving number 2 (Gadhara) because Buddh never travelled to Pakistan.
1, 2 and 32 and 4- 3 and 4 only
- 1, 3 and 4
So we are left with C or D.
Alternatively, As per Britannica
- Buddh born in Lumbini, in Kosala kingdom.=> 3 must be included.
- Buddh died in Kusinara, in Magadha kingdom=> 4 must be included.
- if you eliminate answer choices that donot have 3 and 4 together => still we are left with C or D.
- Therefore, final answer depends on whether Buddh went to Avanti or not.
Following two sources, suggest that Buddh himself never visited Avanti
| Source | what does it say? |
|---|---|
| Region in Indian History edited by Mahendra Pratāpa Page 47 | Once Buddha was invited by King Pradyota of Avanti, but he declined to go because of his old age, and deputed Maha Kachchayana, a native of Avanti to impart his teachings there. => #1 Avanti is wrong. This eliminates option A and D. |
| Historical Buddha: Hans Wolfgang Page3 | Avanti lay outside the area visited by buddha, and was converted to his teaching by his disciple Mahakaccana. |
Therefore, answer: only C only 3 (Kosala) and 4(Magadha.)
Viewpoint# 2: Avanti is wrong
- Question uses the word “associated” with Buddh’s life. So, it is not essential that Buddh himself must have visited the place. Even sending a disciple (Kachchayana), counts as place “associated” with his life.
- Buddh had travelled to Avanti, as per this source Link.
Therefore, answer (D) 1, 3 and 4
Final answer: official answerkey of UPSC.
Bijak & Pushtimarg
Q2. Consider the following statements:
- ‘Bijak’ is a composition of the teachings of Saint Dadu Dayal.
- The Philosophy of Pushti Marg was propounded by Madhvacharya.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Statement #1 is wrong because:
- NCERT class7, Page 116: Kabir’s ideas were later collected and preserved in Bijak.
- NCERT Class12-Ancinent Past, page 161: The Kabir Bijak is preserved by the Kabirpanth (the path or sect of Kabir) in Varanasi and elsewhere in Uttar Pradesh
- Spectrum Culture: Kabir founded a community – Kabirpnathi, who consider Bijak, a collection of his verses, as their scripture. (But in Vallabhacharya section, Spectrum is silent on the fact he founded Pushtimarg)
- Therefore, as such Bijak = Kabir. Hence statement 1 should be wrong.
- But a doubt arises, what if Dadu Dayal also composed Bijak? The answer is NO. As per Bhati Poetry, Neeti Sadarangani page 123: Bijak, which is the scripture of the Kabir Panth, only contains works attributed to Kabir.
- Therefore, statement 1 definitely is wrong.
Statement #2 is wrong because
- NIOS Culture material,Page 136: Philosophy in Medieval India:
- Vallabhacharya’s philosophy came to be known as Pushtimarga (the path of grace).
- Same page, Madhavacharya is listed under Dvaita => he is not associated with Pushtimarg.
- Alternate source: Lucent GK page 71: Vallabhacharya (1479-1531)- he propounded the philosophy of Pushtimarg.
Hence answer D neither 1 nor 2 are correct.
6 Schools of Indian Philosophy
Q3. Which one of the following pairs does not form part of the six systems of Indian Philosophy?
- Mimamsa and Vedanta
- Nyaya and Vaisheshika
- Lokayata and Kapalika
- Sankhya and Yoga
NIOS Culture material, Chapter 8 page 117 onwards
| Samkhya | Prakriti and Purush |
| Yoga | Releasing Purush from Parkriti |
| Nyaya | Logical thinking |
| Vaisheshika | Realistic and objective philosophy of universe |
| Mimamsa | Analyzing Samhita and Brahmana portion of Veda. |
| Vedanta | Philosophy of Upanishad. |
So, accordingly, eliminate the correct terms. (Because we’ve to find the wrong term)
- Mimamsa and Vedanta
- Nyaya and Vaisheshika
- Lokayata and Kapalika
- Sankhya and Yoga
Therefore, answer C Lokayata and Kapalika donot form 6 system of Indian philosophy.
Alternate source:
- TMH History section Page 15. Six orthodox school of Hindu philosophy are Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Mimansa and Vedanta. Eliminate options accordingly and we are left with answer C.
- Lucent GK table given on page7
[Act 2] Architecture (3MCQ)
Ibadat Khana
Q1. Ibadat Khana at Fatehpur Sikri was
- the mosque for the use of Royal Family
- Akbar’s private chamber prayer
- the hall in which Akbar held discussions with scholars of various religions.
- the room in which the nobles belonging to different religions gathered to discuss religious affairs.
Answer is C: “Scholars” because
- NCERT class7 History, Chapter4, Page 54: While Akbar was at Fatehpur Sikri during the 1570s he started discussions on religion with the ulama, Brahmanas, Jesuit priests who were Roman Catholics, and Zoroastrians. These discussions took place in the ibadat khana. Hence answer C
- NIOS Culture material, Page 49: On every Thursday, scholars from different religions came to debate on religious issues raised by Akbar. This was done at the Ibadat Khana in Fateh Pur Sikri at Agra
- TMH: History section, page 74
btw, A similar question in CAPF-2013.
Panchayatan
Q2. With reference to the cultural history of India, the term ‘Panchayatan’ refers to
- an assembly of village elders
- a religious sect
- a style of temple construction
- an administrative functionary
http://ccrtindia.gov.in/templearchitecture.php
Panchayatana – a temple that has a central shrine surrounded by four other shrines.
Therefore, answer C
Buddhist monastery: Tabo, Alchi, Lhakhang
Q3. With reference to Buddhist history, tradition and culture in India.
Consider the following pairs:
| Famous shrine | Location |
| 1. Tabo monastery and temple complex | Spiti Valley |
| 2. Lhotsava Lhakhang temple, Nako | Zanskar Valley |
| 3. Alchi temple complex | Ladakh |
Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Ans: (C) 1 and 3 only:
- Tabo=Spiti and Alchi=Ladakh. There are correct as per National geographic page.
- Lhotsava Lhakhang, Nako is in Himachal Pradesh as per Frontline. Zanskar Valley is in Jammu and Kashmir. Therefore #2 is wrong pair.
Sculpture vs Site
Q4. With reference to the Indian history of art and culture, consider the following pairs:
| Famous work of sculpture | Site |
| 1. A grand image of Buddha’s Mahaparinirvana with numerous celestial musicians above and the sorrowful figures of his followers below | Ajanta |
| 2. A huge image of Varaha Avatar (boar incarnation) of Vishnu, as he rescues Goddess Earth from the deep and chaotic waters, sculpted on rock | Mount Abu |
| 3. “Arjuna’s Penance” /”Descent of Ganga” sculpted on the surface of huge boulders | Mamallapuram |
Which of the pairs given above is/ are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2 only
- 3 only,
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Let’s check
| location | why? |
| 1 correct |
|
| 2wrong | Vishnu (Varah / boar form) saving Goddess Earth= found at Mamallapuram. Ref:
|
| 3 correct | Upinder Singh, A history of Ancient and Early Medieval, Page 634 |
Therefore, Answer C: 1 and 3
[Act 3] Music, Dance, Art forms (4MCQ)
Sattriya Dance
Q1. With reference to the famous Sattriya dance, consider the following statements:
- Sattriya is a combination of music, dance and drama.
- It is a centuries-old living tradition of Vaishnavites of Assam.
- It is based on classical Ragas and Talas of devotional songs composed by Tulsidas, Kabir and Mirabai.
Which of the statements given above is /are correct?
- 1 only
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
http://ccrtindia.gov.in/sattriya.php
- This neo-Vaishnava treasure of Assamese dance and drama has been….…Sattriya dance tradition is governed by strictly laid down principles in respect……music etc=> Statement 1 right. Combination of music, dance and drama.
- Sattriya dance form was introduced in the 15th century A.D by the great Vaishnava saint and reformer of Assam, Mahapurusha Sankaradeva as a powerful medium for propagation of the Vaishnava faith.=> Statement 2 is right
- Statement 3: hard to locate direct source in google books, to refute or validate the third statement.Hence joining dots
And therefore, dots 1+2+3= third statement should be right. Therefore, (D) 1, 2 and 3. [or may be “B” only 1 and 2].
Manganiyars musician
Q2. A community of people called Manganiyars is well-known for their
- martial arts in North-East India
- musical tradition in North-West India
- classical vocal music in South India
- pietra dura tradition in Central India
May 26, 2014; Indian express mentioned this.
Manganiyars — a tribal community from Rajasthan with a strong musical tradition
Therefore, Option B is most apt.
Garba, Mohini & Yaksha
Q3: Consider following pairs
- Garba : Gujarat
- Mohiniattam : Odisha
- Yakshagana : Karnataka
Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- (c) 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
| 1.Yakshgana | A theatre form of Karnataka | 174 |
| 2.Mohiniattam | Kerala. (and not Odisha). Therefore, all options involving #2 are wrong. | 118 |
| 3.Garba | Gujarat. | 127 |
Alternative source:
- LucentGK Ch. Miscellany Section 36. page 603
- TMH General knowledge section , page 36
Therefore, only 1 and 3 correct. Answer is C
Counter argument
- NIOS culture material, page 175 says Yakshagana, a form of Kathakali in Kerala, tells us stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Therefore, both 2 and 3 are wrong. Answer only 1 (Garba).
- Mrunal: well in that case, we’ve to fall back to TheHindu because just like General Dong, the Hindu can NEVER be wrong (as far as UPSC answerkey-making is concerned)
July 22, 2014’s Hindu newspaper says, Though Yakshagana is native to coastal Karnataka, the artform has a good number of admirers all over the State and other parts of the country as well. Therefore, final answer C 1 and 3 only.

- Katha Upanishad
- Chandogya Upanishad
- Aitareya Upanishad
- Mundaka Upanishad
Answer D because
- India Yearbook 2014, Chapter 2 National Symbols Page 28: “The words Satyameva Jayatefrom Mundaka Upanishad, meaning ‘Truth Alone Triumphs’, are inscribed below the abacus in Devanagariscript.”

|
|
Therefore answer is C only 2(Kannada) and 3(Telugu).

Q1. In medieval India, the designations ‘Mahattara’ and ‘Pattakila’ were used for

| Indian epigraphical glossary Page 191 | Mahattara: village headman |
| Madhya Pradesh Through the Ages edited by Shiri Ram BakshiPage 210 |
|

But some people engaging in fierce debate wars about statement 1, so, let’s crosscheck
| statement | crosscheck |

for Art and culture, Class XI NCERT, Fine Art book (An Introduction to Indian Art-Part1) is very helpful. Panchayat and Example of Sculptures can be answered from that. Every year 3-5 questions from that book. Please add that is your list of books.
Highly recommended.
this paper has clearly devasted the coaching factories and their billionaires .
Who can say for sure that the cut-off will be around 200-210? What is the point in all these speculations given the culprit is the infamous UPSC known well for its unpredictable and ‘Backbreaking’ moves? For the past 1 year or so, our hardwork and prep styles and methods were all based on UPSC’s style over the recent years and all those speculations by Mrunal Sir and the coaching wallahs. But in the end,we know much of it did not workout(no offence).
So my dear sincere and hardworking aspirant friend, dont lose hope until UPSC finally declares the result. Do not take it for granted all these marks posted in comments are for real. If you have worked hard with all the sincerety, there will be God to watch your back. Believe in miracles.Believe in God.
Start preparing for mains,everybody! :-)
What a boost up….but UPSC showed Mirror to all of US.

For Art and Culture, I think Al BAshams architecture and religion chapters are more than enough.
Last year’s Tribhanga was directly from there and sankhya school also.
THis year also question was directly from that.
Here you mentioned “AI BAshams” for Art and Culture is sufficient ,then wat’s its full name and how can i find it ?
full name of source please??
Guys does anybody here think that the answer of the question
“If the third day of a month is Monday, which of
the following will be the fifth day from 21st of
the month?”
Should be Tuesday instead of Wednesday as given by all keys
plz refer to this link http://www.brilliancecollege.com/uploads/matsara_vijayi/76/1104181303125464Calender.pdf
Have one more link where answer is Wednesday but there question is “5th day AFTER 21st” and not “5th day FROM 21st”
I have read that solution in the link, but just simply count the days from 21. As 1st day from today will be tomorrow, not today itself. I used this logic, i think its wed only. REST it’s upto UPSC.
http://upsc-csat.testfunda.com/Content/Downloads/UPSC-CSAT_2014_Question_Paper_With_Detailed_Solutions.pdf
Q 45.
I don’t know why in your link they are taking in this way. I came across number of questions like these during course of prep and ans was always like which gave Wed as answer. May be it depend more on if it goes as ‘..starting from 21st of the month’ then tuesday would have been the answer. If this leading MBA coaching is giving solution in this way along with CL, I believe this is authentic and if not I lost 3.3 marks.
It can be Wednesday, but not just because CL or any other coaching is giving it as an answer (CL made huge blunders in UPPSC CSAT keys), I read this question in hindi too which says 21 se paanchva din , I guess in common parlance too 5th day from today is 30+4 th day as in first day of test match you dont say “6th day from today” for the last day of match instead you say “5th day from today”, anyways the final interpreter is UPSC .
slight correction
for wednesday logic the last day of a test match should be “4th day from day one” (which I have never heard)
and for tuesday logic should be “5th day from day one”
Indeed Man. A coaching can never be 100 percent correct, one shouldn’t trust them easily and of course final interpreter is UPSC. But see here too, Ques 9. This question also came in LIC apprentice exam some years back solution is wednesday, this question came in RMAT (Rajsthan management aptitude test) too and ans still was same, a number of google books you can google with same question word to word and same ans. But still ball lies in UPSC court :
http://books.google.co.in/books?id=RAqn0w7BPHMC&pg=PA187&lpg=PA187&dq=If+the+third+day+of+a+month+is+Monday,+which+of+the+following+will+be+the+fifth+day+from+21st+of+the+month&source=bl&ots=XtjF4NIwzn&sig=ykeX6dnMyTq8dFfPSUaJBzVgERU&hl=en&sa=X&ei=l5EBVJ-7LMSgugSyzIHQAw&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=If%20the%20third%20day%20of%20a%20month%20is%20Monday%2C%20which%20of%20the%20following%20will%20be%20the%20fifth%20day%20from%2021st%20of%20the%20month&f=false
Ok if some govt exams have given that answer then in all probability that interpretation is correct.. :)
UPSC is going to lower the maximum AGE limit to 26….

Oh God! Seems Lord Lytton has come out of his grave and took over UPSC.
Guys, who are getting 220 -250 as per different answer keys – plz tell wat r u doing..
I am getting 230(Vaji) and 250(Shankar) not sure wats gonna be my score..but i am not able to gain confidence if I should start preparing for mains..
Plz suggest???
Dude,if this is your score through VAJI,then recheck your answers through another key, they have done blunders, but mind it don’t check CL for sure. And secondly start preparing.
Vaji is definitely wrong in 3-4 question like crab and mite one. But margin of error in case of CL has always been low especially in paper 2. Test Funda is horrible for paper 1 but for paper 2 again read their solution pdf file. They have explained every question nicely and thus its keys are 99 percent authentic. As far as paper 1 is concerned I loved gaurav agarwal’s solutions and chronicle.
What are you waiting for?
Yes, start preparing for it. Before pre results are out get over with at least 30-40 Essay practice, GS1 and 4. They will be covered till then if you work sincerely. As your score is good I guess you only need to practice projecting your thoughts in a synchronized manner. If by CL keys you are above 230, forget everything and work hard! You are gonna have a brilliant journey ahead.
My score is too shuttling between 243 to 252 with all Vaji, Byju, Chronicle, Rau and CL keys (244, Best and accurate). And I am very sure error percentage will be in plus minus 3 percent range. I had started mine yesterday only on Ganesh chaturthi. i wish Bappa bless all serious aspirants with his divinity. :)
Go with topper’s interviews, start writing practice of essays and come out of confusion, it will only impede your prep.
ATB (Y)
thanks ‘IAS Aspirant’ and Abhay..
I wanted to chk with CL – but somehow I am not able to open Paper 1 on my notebuk.. so cud not completly chk there..btw i chked at gaurav blog for paper 1
Paper 1(D) – 115 – usin gaurav keys
Paper 2 – 135 – usin CL keys..
tats y i chked in Vaji so tat i can chk at one place fully..
I am kind of scared becoz i never cleared prelims..and since ppl are writing 250 -280..donno who much population belongs to tat category – if 5 ppl at Mrunal site are like tat..atleast 20% will be of tat category..and I am a victim of general category…
so all thse is pushing me back..wenever I sit to study..the fear of failure creeps in..
Dude you are through. Just that recheck CL answers again for paper 2. They have done mistakes.
sir,are you from hbti? I am a final year civil engg student at hbti.I gave my prelims paper at home and getting a score between 184-194 with little preparation. Sir, i am not able to decide if i should give my prelims next year and start preparing for Civil services full time now onwards or prepare for Gate,IES etc and afterwards think for IAS. Sir,Please guide me.
hi, annu priya i am also a student of civil engineering. i have completed my btech this year and given IES exam. in my opinion if you observe the syllabus of IES AND CSE( syllabus of optional subject) of civil engineering it is same also papers are also of same pattern and trend. so any ies and cse and be prepapred together. also in IES exam general ability paper contains 200 mark and for cse aspirant it is a cake ( easy because 60 questions are of gk type and if you are preparing for cse then you can solve at least 50 question correctly and it will enhance your score upto 50 mark)
Thanks Ashutosh for your suggestions..are you taking civil engg as an optional in CSE? coz I am not sure if i would be able to handle civil engg as an optional in CSE…Thanks for replying…btw which college are you from?
Yes. I am from HBTI.
It’s good to hear your score with your little prep. Keep working hard and just keep in mind the unpredictability of it and don’t leave any topic untouch.
Regarding your choice of career is concerned I am not going to tell you what to pick or what not. Civil examination is too hard to predict. If you know Somvanshi sir he cracked in 3rd attempt and Neha ma’m in first. It purely depends on you and your level of prep. Certainly IES is better than gate. Ies and civil services are equal all india services. Previous is called as technocrat and later bureaucrat. Bureaucrat has greater perks reaponsibilities and powers than technocrat and thia prompted Akshat to give exam last year and he scored 4th rank. Gate is for those who wants to go either for PSU job or teaching career. As per as my experience gate qualified has very low chances in corporate world as compared to engineering graduate. So if you want to go for teaching opt gate. and if want to work under president as technocrat in infrastructure sectors of govt give ies. Ies is not tough. Harcourtians are most of the time in top positions. Consult your senior for that who has given that exam and cracked it.
Now if you want to go in this civil services only sooner or later start preparing for it from today only and give prelims only when you have sufficient confidence. Mrunal has chalked down brilliant strategy for it. Refer that and for any help drop me a mail on:

Thank you sir for your kind words.I will definitely keep your suggestions in mind while preparation.I want to give CSE prelims in 1-2 yrs, definitely by 2016,and have started working on my basics.Meanwhile preparing for GATE too..But i think for IES, will have to take coaching..will further contact you if any problem arises…thanks a lot for your support..
280 + vajiram answer key
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHICH BOOKS OF ECONOMICS SHOULD I PURCHASE SUNDARAM OR RAMESH???
+ STUDY MATERIAL FOR ETHICS, SOCIAL JUSTICE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS…..ANYONE CAN PARSAL ??? I AM READY TO PAY EXTRA MONEY!!!! :(
As far as Mrunal’s suggestions, if you do not have Ramesh singh, please go ahead and buy it, but do keep follow Mrunal’s economic articles, it will help you to get the basic understanding…
if your concepts are clear, then no need for Ramesh. Dutt n Sundaram selected reading, but really good source. Ethics – S.K. Mishra + Lukmaan case studies are really good. IR will suggest you to make your own notes from N/Ps n keep following IDSA every now n then. of all major trips of the PM from Jan 2014 till the end of nov. Social justise sorry no idea. as for parcel you can directly call – Jawahar book store, they do courier. Keys are bullshit, for every controversial question each key comes out with different answer and that too without any disclaimer that it can be wrong, don’t know how people rely on such keys and have calculated exact scores , even 3-4 questions can manipulate the score advantageously or devastatingly so dont believe in these stupid keys and keep on doing your preps ,only time will tell who is making it and who is not. And believe me no one knows the exact answers of ambiguous questions of comprehension except UPSC be it some renowned MBA institute or a humble peon.

REad this, story ended before starting…………..
The new look is neat and clean but I guess many css issues are there and some bug in comment ordering too ,moreover many of old comments are not getting displayed, plz look into that recent comment side bar , if some one posts a very long line it would come out of that bar and spread in your content area..
yes, the bug is that once spam-comments are deleted, the replies given to them end up at bottom of the commentpage irrespective of date. Have asked the expert to fix it.
These are minor issues , but these things do effect the viewership of a website as reputed as yours and when you can not afford to loose even a single hit …I would advice you to get your website thoroughly tested on “test” servers before uploading even a slightest change on production server, your website is no more a small affair.
and well that’s just an advice from a well wisher , moreover thanks for acknowledging my comment :)
well atleast the freedom struggle topic didnot do gaddari with me!
Guys…I got 205 in P-1 and P-2 and am from general category. Do any one think i can get through this
