- CSAT 2013: GS History Internal Breakup History
- History: Modern India (5Qs)
- History: Ancient, Medieval (2Qs)
- 15 out of total 100 MCQs were from History.
- Questions from Modern History very straight forward тАУalmost all can be solved directly from Bipin Chandra (contrary to the difficulty level that one expects from UPSC.)
- Ancient-Medieval continues to get low-priority.
- The trivial тАЬChronology/timelineтАЭ type question makes re-entry in UPSC. (Dadu Dayal)
- Culture continues to get high priority (as usual) and continues to be a tough cookie (as usual). Whatever relaxation was given in Modern History Questions, has been countered here. Hell some of these тАЬcultureтАЭ questions almost require doing PG/Ph.D on the said topic hahaha.

History: Modern India (5Qs)
Total five MCQs from this section:
Simon
1. The people of India agitated against the arrival of Simon Commission because
- Indians never wanted the review of the working of the Act of 1919
- Simon Commission recommended the abolition of┬а Dyarchy (Diarchy) in the Provinces
- there was no Indian member in the Simon Commission
- the Simon Commission suggested the partition of the country
IndiaтАЩs Struggle for Independence, Bipin Chandra, Ch 21, Page 261
The response (to formation of Simon Commission) in India was immediate and unanimous, that no Indian should be thought fit to serve on a body which claimed the right to decide the political future of India, was an insult that no Indian of even most moderate political opinion was willing to swallow.
Answer C.

NCERT Class 12, Themes in Indian History Part III, Page 363

Another Source: IndiaтАЩs Struggle for Independence, Bipin Chandra, Ch.35, Page 457

- writing off all peasant debts
IndiaтАЩs Struggle for Independence, Bipin Chandra, Ch.27, Page 352 last para
It was the Tebhaga struggle in Bengal that held the limelight. in 1946 the sharecroppers of Bengal began to assert that they would no longer pay a half share of their crops to Jotedars but only 1/3rd and that before division, the crop would be stored in their khamars (Godowns) and not that of the Jotedars.

Three structures were the most important in Buddhism namely Chaitya, Vihara and Stupa.
|
is a place, usually dome shaped, where the mortal remains of Buddha and other important monks are placed. |

4. Which one of the following describes best the concept of Nirvana in Buddhism?

- The complete annihilation of self
- A state of bliss and rest
- A mental stage beyond all comprehension
Debatable answer-choices.
IGNOUтАЩs MA Philosophy -> MPYE-005 World Religions, chapter 3 and 4.
|
Ch3.Page 30, Nirvana is the total тАШextinction of thirstтАЩ. Hence (A) is correct. |
|
^same pdf, same paragraph continues to say Extinction of the тАШthirstтАЩ does not mean self-annihilation, because there is no self in┬а Buddhism. Hence option (B) is definitely incorrect. |
|
Ch4. page38, Nirvana is the state of being without suffering. It is a state of supreme happiness and bliss. Hence (C) is also correct (or atleast close match!) |
|
Ch3. Page30, the author/professor himself says:How can we understand Nirvana? Nirvana is the absolute, supra-mundane experience; hence language is not sufficient to explain it. (Even this can be debated as a valid answer, among the given 4 choices!) |
Final answer: letтАЩs wait for what official answerkey of UPSC has to say.

Question 1 of ancient
Answer highlighted wrong and solution is right.
Q.4 above ans should be option A.
as per ncert class XIth ancient india page 95, doctrines of buddhism : “if desires are conquered nirvana will be attained”
=> extinction of flames of desire
=> concept of nirvana in Buddhism.
In the qestion of Indus civilization, there is not any strong evidence which can prove that they worshipped both. ie male & female deities.. only a seal related to a person in yog mudras, cant prove that they worshiped the male .
TMH General Studies Manual, Ch. History of India, Page 7
Religion: Clay figures of the mother Goddess, worshipped by the people as a symbol of fertility, have been found. A seated figure of a male god, carved on a small stone seal, have also been found. The scene immediately brings to mind the traditional image of Pasupati Mahadeva. In addition to these, we come across numerous symbols of the phallus and female sex organs made of stone, which may have been objects of worship.
+ also refer page 62 XIth ncert ancient India.(heading itself is “The male deity in the indus valley”)
Sir in the questions they have given “they possessed Great places and temples”… not great places as temples… they had the Great bath but also Graneries in certain cities like Mohan-jo-daro and Harrapa which were big… hence option 1 could be right too….
read the question properly…….it is palaces and not places
Refer to IGNOU BA Ancient India booklet… Unit 8 pg.6 = a number of large buildings in the citadel and lower town are belived to have been temples of goda… there are some large stone sculpture found in the buildings + 3rd para near the great bath residence of high priest.. hence option 1 great palaces and temples is correct..
Thanks Sir. For clear my misconception..
Dear Gopesh,

Spectrum- history ne dhoka de diya… only 5 questions!!– ancient, medieval histori chorke — ahir bhaiya ka book ko-hi 5/6 bar reading mari thi– frustrated..
The answer to the Jain Doctrine question is also not correct.
Jaina Philosophy divides Substances (Dravya) into two types – Extended and Non-extended.
The extended subtype is again broadly classified into Jiva and Ajiva. There are further sub-classifications but it is clearly stated that Ajiva does not have soul. Only Jiva has soul.
The second statement in question is a universal statement. It says: “Every object, even the smallest particle has a soul”. This is an extreme statement and would have been correct only if it had used “jiva” instead of “object”.
Also, regarding Samkhya, they fall in Orthodox group (ie. those who believe in Vedas). So, they do derive their knowledge from Vedas which is an external source.
I hope this makes sense.
As per TMH- jain considers everything to have soul, even non living objects.
They are prohibited to consume objects having >= 2 souls – underground roots are considered to have 2 souls, living organisms to have 3 souls.
Thanks for keys.Atleast you are accepting some questions are debatable and showing us all possible scenarios. Some answers are debatable so sure answers cant be provided but I have found many keys of many reputed institution depicting clear answers which i feel is being fake.

Which one of the following describes best the concept of Nirvana in Buddhism?
The extinction of the flame of desire
The complete annihilation of self
A state of bliss and rest
A mental stage beyond all comprehension
a state of bliss and rest is right answer…. before exam i visited vaisali… where a statue of buddha depicts this concept…..
thankyouu so much sir for providing each and evry info and for helping us in every cost.
I guess when UPSC gives the answers to these , that also would be a backbreaking move.(TM)
Answer to Jain Doctrine & Annihilation of Self would be totally different.
The only crap we have to face is the waiting time.
I felt that thsi prelims gives a lot of benefit to people who go to places, are avid readers, enthusiastic travelers.
One who has gone to atleast Sanchi Stupa can make an easy guess to the answer.
Chaitya – Vihara question was a cakewalk for people who have visited places of Buddhist monastery – Tawang or Ajanta-Ellora.
Answers related to National Parks was also on the same lines.
I am pretty sure the answer to Nirvana question is A. Question clearly mentions the word ‘best’ (Other options may be partially correct too). Nirvana is first the end of flame of desire – state of bliss etc. result once Nirvana is attained.
nirvan means bliss of rest according suttapitak try 2 understand man it not a question of philosophy it a question of history
How many parks and places of historical places one visit and given the length and the breadth of the exam, if one does, how is he going to prepare for it?
The Chaitya and Vihara question was cakewalk for everyone who knew the meaning of Vihar in Hindi, no need to travel to Ajanta-Ellora.
Actually the wording of the questions has left a lot to be desired from the standards of the UPSC and a lot of questions simply confuse and do not make sense in definite terms even to a composed mind.
I never said that u have to travel to Silent Valley NP and find all the Lion Tailed Macaques to give the answer.
If I have to explain that what “gives a lot of benefit to people” means then there is a slight carelesness with what you read and what you interpret.
All the best.
Agree !!
Regarding question on Sankhya, Spectrum’s In Facets of Indian culture, Page No 40, it mentions ‘even after death, the soul is caught in the cycle of rebirth with the body…’. So, first statement seems incorrect.
Sir, I give the mains exam 3 times butтАж.
This is my last chance.. After the pre exam i wana to change my option.. but now i am going with history..
pls suggest me what changes are you expected in optional subject since marks of optional sub reduce by 100 marks.. Like in case of history , map question will be there or they are going to replace it.
I am on the same boat with two mains. Please mail me at navaneetgimt@gmail.com. We may find a solution collectively.
Dear frnds. Download (taptu guardian environment) app for E&B section. It is working only on android platform. Best app in my opinion.
For the question on nirvana, A shd be ideally correct coz we can attain a state of bliss and rest only after giving up on our desires. While Option C is an end, Option A suggests the means to achieve it.Hence, extinction of desire IS THE UNDERLYING CONCEPT.
extinction of desires is a way and nirvana is the goal that is state of bliss and rest, like going on NH1 to reach capital of india, so which is capital of india New Delhi or NH1, so answer c should be correct
mrunal sir its a humble reqst plzzzzzzzzzzz replY……
kya aapko lagta hai sc ka cutoff 185 se kam jayega is baar ..due to less attendance n with UIICL exam on same day…….kyoki mere sirf 180 hi aa rahe hai is baar …plzzz reply …thnx in advance….
it will remain atleast 185 if not more…..but m also wishing cut off to fall
Sir,
Could you please tell us what would be the expected cut off this year. As many websites predicts different cut offs based on many factors like number of candidates appeared, IFS factor, expected increase in number of vacancies this year, easiness of exam pattern this year, inclusion of numericals as well as lengthy Paper II . We all see cut off ranges from 185 to 225. If you possibly throw some light on this, it would be better for so many candidates.
Thanks
Amit
