Disclaimer:

• Based on the data/trend of past five GS papers of MPPSC, I’ve prepared this studyplan. At various places, I’ve advised the candidates to ignore a topic.  For example “ignore Indian Geography.” Because in last five papers, they only asked barely a few 3 markers.
• But ^this advice is based on my presumption that you already had appeared in one or two UPSC exams.  So even if they still ask something about Indian Geography e.g. write a note on Indian monsoon, or rivers of North India, then you will manage it during the exam even without any specific reading/revision right now.
• Similarly I even said, ignore bilateral except the basics given in NCERT and NIOS political science books. Because in last five papers, I could spot only one question on Bilateral (India-China). But this advice also runs on presumption that you’ve a habit of reading newspapers daily so even if India-Australia is asked still you can manage a few points about nuclear supply, coal supply, immigration and UNSC permanent seat.
• But if you’re totally new to this competition business, then you need to get some rough idea about all such topics. And my ‘ignore xyz topic’ advice doesn’t apply such new players.

How does MPPSC GS1 (Mains) look like?

Some peculiarities / Strangeness about GS1

1. As you know they’ve a separate GS2 paper to check your knowledge about Madhya Pradesh, yet even in GS1, they’ve sometimes asked question about Madhya Pradesh. (e.g.MP’s sports policy, tourism policy etc.)
2. Although GS1 syllabus only mentions Indian history, yet in 2009 (vishesh pariksha), they even asked about Russian revolution
3. Once they asked about Oscar awards for 15 marks (150 words). Now who prepares Oscar awards in that much detail!

Apart from such small glitches, by and large, GS1 exam-trend is predictable and questions are straight forward. But it also comes with a ‘challenge’: If Mr.X write 5 points about Gandhi-Irwin and Mr.Y writes 7 points about Gandhi Irwin then Mr.Y gets more marks.

In short analytical brain, Ph.D mind has no place here, just mugup the points and reproduce them in the answersheet. Success boils down to your revision-recalling power.

So what is the wisdom ^here?

1. The cost: benefit of Indian culture is not so good. It’ll be better if you pump that much time in Madhya Pradesh specific culture topics for Paper II.
2. Prominent Freedom-Fighters are sometimes asked for 20 marks. (e.g. Gandhi and Bose) But other 150+ freedom fighters (given in Spectrum etc. books) =not asked.
3. From freedom-struggle, static-direct questions are asked. No analysis / evaluation/ quotes are asked.
4. Very Straight forward questions from Socio-Religious reforms. But observe that Dayanand Saraswati was asked for 10 marks. (meaning you need content worth 100 marks.)

Then what should be the approach for preparation?

• Book: Spectrum Publication: Brief History of Modern India by Rajiv Ahir. Religiously mug it up.
• (Alternative) If you general studies manual (of any publication) – just revise its freedom struggle related portion.
• Bipin Chandra may not be that useful here because he goes into narrative analysis but here MP PSC only asking straight forward questions. So you need readymade points.
• If you’ve time read Freedom Fighter’s book of same Spectrum publication but only focus on big names. (Big names meaning those fighters for whom more than 5 lines are given). Otherwise just focus on MP related freedom fighters.

Geography

30 years ago, Congress used to the dominant party. But now so many regional parties have popped up that Congress’s influence has greatly declined.

Same is the situation with Geography, 10 years ago it used to be a “hottest” thing in both UPSC and State PSC exams. But now many allied topics related to Geography have emerged: Environment Biodiversity, climate-change, Census, Agriculture and disaster management. Therefore importance of basic / core geography has declined. Let’s observe the questions

You’ll get definitions and basic theory from NIOS material for Environment and Biodiversity (attached @bottom of this article, although I think you already have it!). Other than NIOS, prepare following contemporary topics (list not exhaustive)

2. Environment protection act
3. Tiger conservation: list of parks in MP
4. Lion conservation: the controversy about shifting lions from Gujarat to MP
5. Western Ghat conservation
6. Judicial activism related to environment protection and illegal mining

for paper II, MP specific details about pollution control, forestry etc. from 12^th FYP (But that is separately discussed in later part of this article)

Don’t do Ph.D on any of above topics, just prepare a note containing important points that are sufficient to write an answer worth 150-200 words.

Disaster Management

• Since MP official syllabus doesn’t specifically mention Disaster management for GS1, therefore we can say above Disaster management topic was asked only for ‘one-time’ for essay purpose. And cyclone – Tsunami from geography point of view.
• But still, given the Uttarakhand Tragedy, at least cloudburst related basic theory and disaster management principles should be prepared. (basics discussed under my Sci-Tech compilation click me)
• Plus: national & state disaster management authority and NDRF.
• and MP’s role in disaster management during Uttarakhand tragedy.  (dig a few newspaper sites)
• Cyclone-Tsunami and other natural phenomenon/disasters you can prepare from NCERT + whatever geography books you’ve.
• If you’re left with time, then do selective study of Disaster management from IGNOU MA Public Administration module. (MPA-018) given at bottom.

How to approach polity?

#1: Laxmikanth Zindabad

• Religious mug up Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth
• Same book available in Hindi under the title Bharat ki Rajyavyavstha, M.Laxmikanth
• In MCQs you can easily eliminate the wrong answers but in the mains exam, you’ve to ‘recall’ the absolute points e.g. powers of governor, powers of PM etc. if you forget to mention any points, then you’ll only axe your own leg, while other people will get more marks.
• So, Revise it as many times as you can. + At the end of Laxmikanth’s book, he has given the list of polity questions asked in UPSC Mains. From those questions, pickup direct-non-analytical type polity questions and practice writing their answers at home.

#2: Other than Laxmikanth

• some allied topics such as PIL, independence of judiciary, judicial review etc. are given in IGNOU MPS-003 chapter 10. (free download @bottom of this article)
• From current affairs: do only those polity items that kept making headlines For example:

2. They’ve repeated asked about global recession, WTO/Doha/Gree-blue-amber subsidies= topics used to be very ‘hot/clichéd’ items in those years.
3. So if we extrapolate: you should focus on current account deficit, petro/LPG prices, food inflation, and rupee decline. (again don’t do Ph.D, just memorize enough points so you can write ~200 words)

Enough talk about GS1 paper, now moving to GS2.

GS Paper2: Part 1

• You’d already have prepared the geography from net/ some book.  I’m only focusing on the schemes, policies, census, agri-development, ‘yearbook’ type information about MP. These topics form a significant part in Paper II.
• I’ve also made a PDF containing important flagship schemes of MP Government (attached at bottom).
• While ^this PDF file does give an overview but alone not sufficient / exhaustive coverage required for the exam, hence additionally you need do parallel and selective study from two sources:

• 407-410: names of various awards and organizations give, prepare 2-3 lines for each for possible 3 marker questions.
• 411: GK fact that State of Madhya Pradesh came into being on 1st November 1956. Subsequently, on 1st November 2000, ChhattisgarhState was carved out of it. + census related data given in the first para.

MP Transport

• 303: fact that MP state aviation fleet comprises an aircraft Superking B-200, three  helicopters Bell-430, Eurocopter EC155B1 and Bell-407. + Pithampura at Indore; Malanpur at Gwalior;  Mandipdeep at Bhopal, and Maneri at Jabalpur industrial towns are served by aerodromes.  Madhya Pradesh has five airports which are maintained by Airport Authority of India.

MP’s Budget: Essential Topics

• This should be read after you’re done with MP’s 12^th FYP + MP’s Economic survey.
• The budget speech PDF is given point-wise: 1..2…3, so I’m listing the points that are important

MP’s Policies

• I’ve compiled the pdfs of MP’s government policies. (only Hindi available)
• Don’t read them word by word, just focus on first 3-4 pages, it’ll give you the list of objectives for each policy=sufficient for a 15-20 marks question.
• Since tourism, population and sports policies are already asked in previous years, so you may ignore them because questions usually don’t repeat.

GS Paper 2: Part 2 (culture etc)

What I observed from last five papers is: they usually center on following:

1. Name of prominent businessmen, social workers, writers, poets, sportsmen.
2. various awards given by state government
3. folk/tribal: dance, customs, music, festivals, color-dress-occupation.
4. they seem to have special affinity of Khajuraho and 2-3 freedom fighters of MP, because question keep re-appearing directly / indirectly.

Truth be told, kuchh khas bolne ke liye nahi hai. So, I’m just copy pasting the email from my friend Mr.Chandra Deo, who is also appearing in this same Exam. (And had supplied the question papers)

MPPSC never gives high marks in interview, even topper got 80 out of 250. Marks varied from 70 – 120. so anyone who scored 1200 out of 2100 in mains can crack this exam easily.

GS2 part 2 (Culture, Literature, Music, Dance, Arts and History of Madhya  Pradesh) is very factual.
