Disclaimer:

  • Based on the data/trend of past five GS papers of MPPSC, I’ve prepared this studyplan. At various places, I’ve advised the candidates to ignore a topic.  For example “ignore Indian Geography.” Because in last five papers, they only asked barely a few 3 markers.
  • But ^this advice is based on my presumption that you already had appeared in one or two UPSC exams.  So even if they still ask something about Indian Geography e.g. write a note on Indian monsoon, or rivers of North India, then you will manage it during the exam even without any specific reading/revision right now.
  • Similarly I even said, ignore bilateral except the basics given in NCERT and NIOS political science books. Because in last five papers, I could spot only one question on Bilateral (India-China). But this advice also runs on presumption that you’ve a habit of reading newspapers daily so even if India-Australia is asked still you can manage a few points about nuclear supply, coal supply, immigration and UNSC permanent seat.
  • But if you’re totally new to this competition business, then you need to get some rough idea about all such topics. And my ‘ignore xyz topic’ advice doesn’t apply such new players.
  • Mains hall tickets/admit cards are available click me
  • + all these study plans are same like “Investment is subject to market risk”.

How does MPPSC GS1 (Mains) look like?

Question no. of Q marks per question total marks
3 markers (on history, polity, economy, Enb, agro, Misc.GK) 20 3 60
10 marks 100 words 8 (attempt any 6) 10 60
15 marks 150 words 6 (attempt any 4) 15 60
20 marks 200 words 4 (attempt any 3) 20 60
Essay type long question 3 (Attempt any 1) 60 60

Thus total 300 marks.

Some peculiarities / Strangeness about GS1

  1. As you know they’ve a separate GS2 paper to check your knowledge about Madhya Pradesh, yet even in GS1, they’ve sometimes asked question about Madhya Pradesh. (e.g.MP’s sports policy, tourism policy etc.)
  2. Although GS1 syllabus only mentions Indian history, yet in 2009 (vishesh pariksha), they even asked about Russian revolution
  3. Once they asked about Oscar awards for 15 marks (150 words). Now who prepares Oscar awards in that much detail!

Apart from such small glitches, by and large, GS1 exam-trend is predictable and questions are straight forward. But it also comes with a ‘challenge’: If Mr.X write 5 points about Gandhi-Irwin and Mr.Y writes 7 points about Gandhi Irwin then Mr.Y gets more marks.

In short analytical brain, Ph.D mind has no place here, just mugup the points and reproduce them in the answersheet. Success boils down to your revision-recalling power.

History Culture

first observe the questions asked in last five exams:

Bhim Bethka Culture 3 2009
Features of Indian Culture in Maurya dynasty Culture 20 2010(sp)
Purusharth Chatustay Culture 10 2010
Why is Rani Durgawati famous? Culture 3 2008
contribution of Subhashchandra Bose in freedom struggle Freedom.Fighter 20 2008
Explain the Trusteeship principle of Mahatma Gandhi Freedom.Fighter 20 2009
Three main principles of Gandhism Freedom.Fighter 3 2010(sp)
Laxmibai Freedom.Fighter 3 2008
What is home-rule movement? Freedom.Struggle 3 2008
impact of 1857 mutiny Freedom.Struggle 10 2008
Jinna and Muslim league Freedom.Struggle 10 2008
Rowlatt Act and Jaliawala Massacre Freedom.Struggle 15 2008
Simon Commission Freedom.Struggle 10 2009(sp.)
Civil Disobedience Movement. Freedom.Struggle 15 2009(sp.)
Morley-Minto Reforms. Freedom.Struggle 10 2010
reasons for the partition of Bengal in 1905 Freedom.Struggle 3 2008
Russian Revolution (1917-1922 ) history World 10 2009(sp.)
Vivekanand Reform 3 2008
explain the role of socio religious movements of 19th century Reform 20 2008
Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Reform 10 2009

So what is the wisdom ^here?

  1. The cost: benefit of Indian culture is not so good. It’ll be better if you pump that much time in Madhya Pradesh specific culture topics for Paper II.
  2. Prominent Freedom-Fighters are sometimes asked for 20 marks. (e.g. Gandhi and Bose) But other 150+ freedom fighters (given in Spectrum etc. books) =not asked.
  3. From freedom-struggle, static-direct questions are asked. No analysis / evaluation/ quotes are asked.
  4. Very Straight forward questions from Socio-Religious reforms. But observe that Dayanand Saraswati was asked for 10 marks. (meaning you need content worth 100 marks.)

Then what should be the approach for preparation?

  • Book: Spectrum Publication: Brief History of Modern India by Rajiv Ahir. Religiously mug it up.
  • (Alternative) If you general studies manual (of any publication) – just revise its freedom struggle related portion.
  • Bipin Chandra may not be that useful here because he goes into narrative analysis but here MP PSC only asking straight forward questions. So you need readymade points.
  • If you’ve time read Freedom Fighter’s book of same Spectrum publication but only focus on big names. (Big names meaning those fighters for whom more than 5 lines are given). Otherwise just focus on MP related freedom fighters.

Geography

30 years ago, Congress used to the dominant party. But now so many regional parties have popped up that Congress’s influence has greatly declined.

Same is the situation with Geography, 10 years ago it used to be a “hottest” thing in both UPSC and State PSC exams. But now many allied topics related to Geography have emerged: Environment Biodiversity, climate-change, Census, Agriculture and disaster management. Therefore importance of basic / core geography has declined. Let’s observe the questions

Gandhi Sagar Reservoir geography 3 2009
Dudh Sagar Waterfalls geography 3 2009(sp.)
Bhotia Tribe geography 3 2009(sp.)
Majuli Geography 3 2010
Seven Sisters geography 3 2010(sp)
Land Of Midnight Sun geography (world) 3 2010(sp)
Great Mountain Wall Of North geography (world) 3 2008
Seven Wonders Of The World geography (world) 10 2009(sp.)
El- Nino & Tornado geography 15 2009
  • As you can see, mark wise, Geography is “thik-hai” just like “All India” culture. Your time energy is better invested in preparing MP specific geography for Paper II.
  • In short: ignore Indian Geography. (Except Natural disasters)
  • Sometimes, even “GK” type World geography is asked. Cost: benefit is too bad so ignore.

Environment Biodiversity (EnB)

Chipko Movement 3 2009
Ecology 3 2009(sp.)
Ganga Bachao Movement 3 2010(sp)
Ozone Layer 10 2009
Bio-diversity 10 2009
Narmada Bachao Movement 15 2009
Agro-forestry 15 2009
Environmental Policy – 2006 15 2010
Discuss the meaning and major causes of Global warming. Discuss the environmental and economic effects of Global warming. Suggest its remedial measures. 60 2009
Give a detailed work plan for the pollution free Indian cities 60 2010(sp)

You’ll get definitions and basic theory from NIOS material for Environment and Biodiversity (attached @bottom of this article, although I think you already have it!). Other than NIOS, prepare following contemporary topics (list not exhaustive)

  1. NGT (National Green tribunal)
  2. Environment protection act
  3. Tiger conservation: list of parks in MP
  4. Lion conservation: the controversy about shifting lions from Gujarat to MP
  5. Western Ghat conservation
  6. Judicial activism related to environment protection and illegal mining

for paper II, MP specific details about pollution control, forestry etc. from 12th FYP (But that is separately discussed in later part of this article)

Don’t do Ph.D on any of above topics, just prepare a note containing important points that are sufficient to write an answer worth 150-200 words.

Disaster Management

Cyclone 3 2009(sp.)
Tsunami 3 2010
Discuss the nature of disaster management? What are its rationale in Indian context? What are the main components of Government Policy for disaster management? Submit a work plan to make the Government Policy more effective? 60 2010
  • Since MP official syllabus doesn’t specifically mention Disaster management for GS1, therefore we can say above Disaster management topic was asked only for ‘one-time’ for essay purpose. And cyclone – Tsunami from geography point of view.
  • But still, given the Uttarakhand Tragedy, at least cloudburst related basic theory and disaster management principles should be prepared. (basics discussed under my Sci-Tech compilation click me)
  • Plus: national & state disaster management authority and NDRF.
  • and MP’s role in disaster management during Uttarakhand tragedy.  (dig a few newspaper sites)
  • Cyclone-Tsunami and other natural phenomenon/disasters you can prepare from NCERT + whatever geography books you’ve.
  • If you’re left with time, then do selective study of Disaster management from IGNOU MA Public Administration module. (MPA-018) given at bottom.

Agriculture

yellow revolution 3 2008
Sahiwal Breed 3 2009
Kisan Card 3 2010
Cash Crops 3 2010
White Revolution and operation flood 10 2008
Rural Godown Scheme 10 2010
Evaluate the efforts made by the Central Government after independence to improve the productivity in Indian Agriculture. 20 2009(sp.)
White and Green Revolution in Indian context. 20 2010(sp)
Water harvesting 60 2009(sp.)

As you can see, very clichéd and straight forward questions are asked. Reference?

  1. NCERT => science and geography textbooks=>chapters related to Agriculture
  2. NCERT class 11 Economics (For green revolution)
  3. Summary of Economic Survey chapter on agriculture: click me
  4. Schemes related cold storage, mega food park etc. click me
  5. APMC reforms
  6. + MP related agriculture details (cropping pattern, ranking in production of grain/pulse etc). You’ll find that in MP’s 12th FYP – more details about page number and reference given in later part of this article.

Census related

Prepare basic definitions related to Census: MMR, IMR etc. + Census-2011. Main focus on MP’s data. You’ll find that in MP’s 12th FYP – more details about page number and reference given in later part of this article.

Polity

Polity=maha-important topic. Just observe how questions they’ve asked in previous exams:

How to approach polity?

#1: Laxmikanth Zindabad

  • Religious mug up Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth
  • Same book available in Hindi under the title Bharat ki Rajyavyavstha, M.Laxmikanth
  • In MCQs you can easily eliminate the wrong answers but in the mains exam, you’ve to ‘recall’ the absolute points e.g. powers of governor, powers of PM etc. if you forget to mention any points, then you’ll only axe your own leg, while other people will get more marks.
  • So, Revise it as many times as you can. + At the end of Laxmikanth’s book, he has given the list of polity questions asked in UPSC Mains. From those questions, pickup direct-non-analytical type polity questions and practice writing their answers at home.

#2: Other than Laxmikanth

  • some allied topics such as PIL, independence of judiciary, judicial review etc. are given in IGNOU MPS-003 chapter 10. (free download @bottom of this article)
  • From current affairs: do only those polity items that kept making headlines For example:
  1. SC Judgment on RTI applicability to Political parties.
  2. SC judgment on barring criminal MPs
  3. Telengana issue, Srikrishna report.
  4. food security: Bill/Act/ ordinance
  5. juvenile justice (w.r.t. to Delhi rape) click me
  6. Insurance reforms
  7. Land acquisition
  8. CBI autonomy

+ MP related Polity  GK e.g. how is the chief justice of High court, no. of lok sabha, rajya sabha seats, speaker of vidhan sabha etc.

International Affairs & Institutions

What is Hyde act of 2006 3 2008
Stolt Valor 3 2009
Sea Diamond 3 2009(sp.)

World Intellectual Property Organization 10 2009

G-20 Summit. 10 2010
India as nuclear power country. 10 2010(sp)
Indo-China Conflict 15 2010(sp)
Functions and Role of International Monetary Fund 20 2010(sp)

So what do we get from ^this list?

  1. Bilateral relations =kuch khaas nahi. Only once they asked Indo-China. And Hyde Act (Indo-US) was a too clichéd news item in that era but still asked for only 3 marks.
  2. Meaning there is not much point in going deep about India’s bilateral relations with other countries, visits of foreign dignitaries etc. Just read following (free download at bottom)
    1. NCERT Class 12, Pol.Sci, Ch.4.
    2. NIOS Pol.Sci 26, 27 and 28.
  3. Even from international summits very clichéd things asked (G20) so on that line you should prepare ASEAN, SAARC etc. major organizations and summits only. some of them already given under mrunal.org/diplomacy
  4. Do prepare UN and its organs. (NIOS Pol.Sci. Chapter 30, 31, 32.)
  5. Special organizations/ groupings: IAEA, NSG, EU, ADB. Just basics for 100-150 words. (google)

Sci-Tech

Utilities of Bio-medical technology and genetic engineering 20 2009
  • Prepare only the sci-tech making repeated headlines e.g. IRNSS, God particle, CERN, Sci-Tech and Innovation policy, Nanotech etc. But don’t do Ph.D. Inki topics ki aukaat 10 marks se zyada nahi. Most of them already covered under: https://mrunal.org/snt
  • Also do NCERT Class 12 Biology ch 11 and 12 for biotechnology and its applications. (free download @bottom)
  • If you’ve Spectrum’s book on Sci-Tech, use it for preparing the ‘benefits’ of various science-sub sectors.

Economy

After polity, this is another Maha-important topic. Observe the questions asked:

expand the meaning of SME in India 3 2008
What do you mean by mixed economy? 3 2008
Uruguay Round 3 2008

What is global financial crisis? How has it affected economy of America and India? 60 2008
Global recession 60 2009(sp.)
Discuss the entire effects of globalization, liberalization and privatization on Indian economy. 60 2010(sp)

What do we get from ^this?

  1. They’re mainly asking about contemporary issues of Economy.
  2. They’ve repeated asked about global recession, WTO/Doha/Gree-blue-amber subsidies= topics used to be very ‘hot/clichéd’ items in those years.
  3. So if we extrapolate: you should focus on current account deficit, petro/LPG prices, food inflation, and rupee decline. (again don’t do Ph.D, just memorize enough points so you can write ~200 words)
  4. Almost all of them covered under Mrunal.org/Economy: especially under the Economic survey summaries.
  5. other than that, go through Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh (TMH Publication)

  • “yearbook topics” means various government schemes, policies, organizations, committees.
  • Most of such topics can be found under India yearbook published by Ministry of Information and broadcasting.
  • But you don’t have that much time left to prepare entire India yearbook right now. Toh kya karenge? Hawan Karenge.   Just focus on following areas

#1: Schemes

Majority of the schemes have been covered in my articles: click on the respective links

  1. Education schemes: Click ME
  2. SC/ST/OBC/PH related: Click ME
  3. Women related: Click ME
  4. Public Health/ maternity / childcare: Click ME
  5. E-Governance related: Click ME

#2: organizations

  • in 2010, they asked about Sangeet Natak Academy for 15 marks (150 words.) But if you start preparing that much detail for each and every organization, then your remaining “jawaani” will be spend in this “govt. organizations” topic alone.
  • So, don’t try to prepare all organizations, just focus on those organizations related with economy/sci-tech/welfare: here is the “minimum” list
ECONOMY SCI-TECH RIGHTS/WELFARE
  1. SEBI, IRDA, RBI, CCI, FMC
  2. CBDT, CBEC

For the static fodder points (like unity in diversity, caste politics, secularism etc) use selective reading of NCERT, NIOS and IGNOU (as given below) they’ll also help you indirectly in essay type questions from polity also.

(free download at bottom) Which chapters to focus?

For 3 marker person in news/award/sportsman: go through the list from competitive magazines.

As you can see, they’ve been asking long questions (15-60) marks from sports related matter. So for that, at latest prepare following:

  1. Kushti (Wrestling) in Olympics (about controversy that it was going to be removed from Olympics).
  2. IOA vs IOC, National sports code (already written about this, click me)
  3. Spot fixing and IPL
  4. Olympic 2012, especially Indian achievements.
  5. Doping issue
  6. RTI vs BCCI
  7. MP’s sports initiatives (separately discussed in later part of this article)

Enough talk about GS1 paper, now moving to GS2.

GS Paper2: Part 1

  • You’d already have prepared the geography from net/ some book.  I’m only focusing on the schemes, policies, census, agri-development, ‘yearbook’ type information about MP. These topics form a significant part in Paper II.
  • I’ve also made a PDF containing important flagship schemes of MP Government (attached at bottom).
  • While ^this PDF file does give an overview but alone not sufficient / exhaustive coverage required for the exam, hence additionally you need do parallel and selective study from two sources:
  1. MP’s 12th FYP
  2. MP’s Economic Survey 2012-13

GS Paper 2: Part 2 (culture etc)

What I observed from last five papers is: they usually center on following:

  1. Name of prominent businessmen, social workers, writers, poets, sportsmen.
  2. various awards given by state government
  3. folk/tribal: dance, customs, music, festivals, color-dress-occupation.
  4. they seem to have special affinity of Khajuraho and 2-3 freedom fighters of MP, because question keep re-appearing directly / indirectly.

Truth be told, kuchh khas bolne ke liye nahi hai. So, I’m just copy pasting the email from my friend Mr.Chandra Deo, who is also appearing in this same Exam. (And had supplied the question papers)
