Satvahana Dynasty: Brief Introduction
- Puranic literature calls them “Andhra-jati”.
- Greek Ambassador Megasthenes’ book “Indica” says- Satvahan had a might army and 30 forts.
- Ptolemy’s book also mentions Satvahan ports in Deccan.
- Satvahan coins have ship images, showing their maritime prowess.
- In Satvahan sites, we find coins of Roman king Tiberius. Meaning Satvahan traded with Romans.
- Founder king: Simuka
- Most famous King: Gautamiputra Satakarni, he defeated following armies (or at least bragged so in his facebook profile).
| English | Indian name |
|---|---|
| Scythian | Saka (Rudradaman 1 was main king) |
| Greek | Yavan |
| Parthian | Pallav |
- He did not consider women inferior to man. Infact he calls himself “son of Gautami Balasri” (similar to Sanjay Leela Bhansali)
- Notable cities: Capital Amaravati (Guntur district), Paithan (Aurungabad district), Vaijayanthi (N.Kanara)
- Satvahana kings enforced 4 fold caste system. They were Brahmins and hated Kshatriyas, because they considered Saka, Yavan and Pallav as “degraded Kshatriya clans“. (Ref. RC Majmudar’s book)
- Fall of empire: Successors of Gautamiputra Satakarni were weak. So, the Abihar and Vakatak kings took away their territories, just like SP and BSP took away Uttar Pradesh from Congress.
Tantric Worshipper Satvahan Kings
- Emperor Ashok (Buddhist) controlled Satvahan kings (Brahmin).
- Satvahan Kings ruled Kondapur region between 3rd BCE to 3rd CE (Andhra Pradesh)
- Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) gathered new evidences, which shows Satvahan kings were followers of Tantric cult.
| ASI, 2009-11 | ASI, 2014 |

Satvahan Architecture
- They patronized both Hinduism & (Mahayan) Buddhism. Now, ASI confirms they also patronized Tantricism as well.
- Patronized both Prakrit and Sanskrit Literature. King Hala himself wrote a Prakrit poem book “Sattasai”.
- ok but if Satvahan kings were Brahmins, then why did they patronize Buddhism and Prakrit?
- Political Expediency: After all, they were under control of Buddhist Emperor Ashok!
- Because they were secular.
Anyways, Satvahan kings constructed all types of Buddhist monuments in Andhra and Maharashtra region.
Sculpture @Sarnath
- Sarnath is located at Varansi, UP. Place is also called Rishipatna and Mrigdava or Mrigadaya.
- Lord Buddha gave his first semon here.
- 11th Tirthankar died here, hence the place is sacred for Jains as well
- Sarnath reached zenith during Gupta period (4 to 6th AD)
| Traveller | Came during the reign of |
|---|---|
| Fa-Hien | Chandragupta-I |
| Hiuen Tsang | Harshavardhan |
Ya, but why in News?
- Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was doing excavation in Feb 2014 and Found sculptures in Sarnath.
- Art form: Gupta art of Sarnath school.
- This sculpture depicts the scene of Buddha’s descent from Tusita heaven, where he believed to have given sermon to his mother Mayadevi. From heaven he descended to Sankassa (modern day city of Sankisa,UP)

Hello mrunal,
Visinting your site from past one year. Some amazing analysis and insights on UPSC.Thank you so much for being so dedicated about your blog.i just wanted to ask you whether it is possible to start studying a subject now and write mains.Hopefully if i clear prelims.I was preparing history but now switched to sociology.I am really confused and down here ,the place where i live is pretty remote for any coaching
Aly it’ll be challenging because GS Mains syllabus itself is quite lengthy to finish within three months. but either way best wishes.
Dear Mrunal,
SSC has published answer keys of CGL-Re-Exam 2013 conducted on 27.04.2014.
Totally rubbish answer keys as such with loads of errors.
Whats your take on it?
Regards.
Yes Mrunal Sir, I agree but Sociology can be done regarding its nature, she will just need to mug up social thoughts and social institutions, Rest of the topics can be easily written as they are linked to day to day life
And Aly I have studied Sociology in my Graduation (hons), So, the stuff is not so vast
I read your last comment too ALY and just want to say that never think of UPSC in a excited state of your mind. Be Calm and stable, think a lot and then only decide anything
Thanks apoorv for the answers.Which BOOKS should i refer for social thoughts and institutions?I know it was a very wrong on my part.but whats done is done:(Time to face the music
For such a short period in hand, I won’t say you many things to follow. Just take one basic book say Harlemboss and Upendra Gaur Coaching notes on Sociology and one more book Social Problems by Ram Ahuja.
Besides take printout of Sociology syllabus from CSE notification and stick according to it strictly.
First try to understand very clearly the basic concepts like difference between Group, Community and Society…..Social Mobility, Social Stratification and Social Change…..Because these things look same but have very crucial differences,,,
Secondly, turn over Social thinkers…..Evolution of Sociology started in Europe and thinkers who contributed there and eventually when it became broader with the help of American thinkers …..Some prominent among them are:
1. August Comte(Father of Sociology)….His thought….Positivism, other thoughts not so important
2. Emile Durkheim…His thoughts…Division of Labour in society, Suicide.
3. Spencer and Evolutionism….Do focus on different types of Evolutionism carefully
4. Marx and Class Struggle
5. Max Weber….His thoughts…Bureaucracy, Ideal type. and Methodology
6. Pareto …His thoughts…Derivation, Residues,
7, Merton and Functionalism
8. Talcott Parsons..His thoughts…Social Action and last but not least
9. Comparison between ideas of Marx ad Gandhi
Some Indian thinkers are important…M N Srinivas, G S Ghurye, A R Desai
Thirdly, Try to read about some important social movements, especially by peasants and tribes
Lastly, Remaining topics can be easily written if you have a decent analytical thought about society.
for any other query, text me at facebook.com/apoorvanand1008

@mrunal it is a tough choice whether to go for revision and rerevision of old NCERTs or to take up TN history books..What do you suggest given the fact that have studied these Old NCERT books a couple of times along with NIOS culture and NCERT FINE ARTS 1
Shubham assuming you’ve done post-1857 freedom struggle from spectrum or bipin,
go through TN class11 full and TN class12 upto 1857.
Their presentation is lucid, can be covered within a week by giving two-three hours each day. Since you’d have studied old NCERT, just have to skim through new facts you can find in TN, particularly related to religion and Architecture.

Hi mrunal sir-ur post abt Satavahanas says that they were under Ashoka, puranas refer them as Andhra jati and that they ruled Kondapur region but According to old NCERT book Ancient India by Rs Sharma page 154-“the Satavahanas succeeded the Mauryas although after a gap of about 100 years”. “The puranas speak only of Andhra rule and not of Satavahana rule.On the other hand the name Andhra does not occur in Satavahana inscriptions”. “It seems that the empire of Gautamiputra Satakarni extended from Malwa in the north to Karnataka in the south”.Further, many coins bearing the name of founder of Satavahana dynasty Simukha have been found in Kotilingala village of Karimnagar district of Telangana and it is accepted that it was the early capital of Satavahana dynasty and not Amaravati. Pls correct me with sources if I m wrong.
Rameez- Satvahan sidenotes were compiled from RC Majmudar, An Advanced history of India page 109, 113, 124-37, 164, 201. along with some references from Britannica
