UPSC has uploaded result for CSAT-2014 preliminary exam
- For Civil service click me ~16,900 candidates selected. (So Delhi-rumor that 20,000 will clear prelim turns out to be fake.)
- For Forest service click me ~1100 candidates selected.
I stopped applying in UPSC since a long time, but the gang members cum content writers Rajtanil and Shivaram have cleared
Moral of the story: sharing knowledge with others, doesn’t reduce your competitive chances.
@those who couldn’t clear CSAT-2014
I know how much it hurts. In 2008, I gave my first prelim and despite high hopes, I failed. Why?
- I had underestimated Delhi and all India level competition. So while my preparation was ‘good’ but not ‘excellent’- in terms of number of hours spent every day in reading, revision and practice.
- Pushed too much luck in negative marking to cross imaginary cutoffs.
- I had relied on chronicle, wizard, CST for both current affairs and static-theory preparation using their ‘prelim-special history-geography-science’ etc. editions.
- I did not touch Hindu because I thought those magazines were sufficient. Besides Hindu paper wasn’t available at my place, so it gave me convenient excuse from that majoori.
- I read NCERTs and Laxmikanth, but in a causal manner, hardly any revision.
- I never bothered to solve past UPSC papers on my own – to find the source of question and topicwise trend. Otherwise I would not have made the mistakes number 3, 4 and 5.
- I did not maintain notes for anything.
- I did not prepare aptitude in exhaustive manner, only mugged up a few formulas and “read” a few sums. I was a math-hater therefore a grave-digger myself.
- In those pre-CSAT years, we had to give optional subject’s paper as well. In Public Administration, I had prepared Laxmikanth but, did not focus on Mohit, Prasad etc, nor did I maintain notes for the thinkers and their quotes.
Back in those days, internet was a ‘luxury’, and hardly any online resources available. All the “How-to” was concentrated only in the coaching factories of Delhi.
The world has changed a lot in last six years. But those who fail in prelims, they continue to make similar set of mistakes even today. and 2014, new factors crept in:
- Anti-CSAT protests, whether Government will postpone the prelim or not? That uncertainty would have affected preparation of many.
- CSAT-2014 was rather a trend breaker particularly in the environment-agro part as we saw during answer key analysis. But in such unusually tough papers, the first timers make silly mistake of ticking too many MCQs on gut-feeling, in fear of ‘imaginary cutoffs’, thus dig their own graves.
Anyways, the debate over cutoffs, question quality, UPSC’s back-breakingTM and back-strengtheningTM moves- will never end. But at some point, you’ve have to find and rectify the mistakes. Otherwise, can’t hope for a different result, if you keep doing the same things. And the nature of UPSC exam is such that you’ll end up wasting 3-4 attempts without even realizing that time has passed so quickly and precious years of youthlife are gone.
- Large scale vacancies announced in ACIO and NICL. You can check their last dates on left hand navigation column.
- Soon IGNOU will launch registration forms for its PG programs for December cycle. do register yourself for any decent course of your choice.
As I keep saying never put all eggs in one basket. Always have “backup” ready in advance. The fact that you care to read this far- shows that you’re a serious player, and I’ve no doubt that you’ll be a successful person sooner or later. But Hard work, perseverance and at the ability to learn from mistakes= essential.
@Those who cleared
Congratulations. Next stage: you’ve to fillup a new form called “DAF application form”

UnHelpdesk numbers
un-helpdesk because they rarely respond, and every guy gives a new or vague answer: 011-23385271, 011-23098543 or 011-23381125
RTI stonewalling continues
This time, Lord Curzone specifically mentioned in the result PDF itself that:
- they won’t release Answerkey and cutoffs before entire process is over (i.e. 2015- after interview and final selection)
- They won’t entertain any RTI in this regard.
I had won this case at CIC level few years ago, but UPSC went to high court. Since then just Taarikh pe taarikh and I don’t even have Sunny Deol to fight my case.

Sir I m preparing for administrative officer exam by ASRB for INDIAN COUNCIL OF AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH will be held on 23/11/2014 ….I just want to know that whether it is good job or not ..?? Gazetted PR not ? And scope of progress ? Plzz anybody help me …
sir… do i have any option to change the mains examination centre….earlier i filled centre for delhi but now i want to change….
Is a uni-dimensional, full-hearted effort good enough? Is there really an effort-performance linkage? Is there ever a possibility that we are not pawns on a chessboard? Or do we even stand a chance? On a weird conceptual level, does it really matter?.Or are we just small grains of sands belonging to a timeglass, destined to move from one part of space to another?…I tried a hell lot but could not find any answers….my 5th and last attempt finally got over..yes, it i fought hard…really hard….flunked prelims in 2006, and 2007…wrote mains in 2008…no interview call…wrote mains again in 2009, got an interview call in Dr KK Paul’s board….1174 was the last general cat score….my total was 1122..so a guy or gal failing at the intrview stage is as bad as not passing prelims….u are not thr in the final list…thought I had buried my ghosts of upsc….pat comes this age relaxation….csat 2014…..entirely different from the 2006-2009 era…..still fought…..scored somewhere around 215…..but dont think it worked,….so this 9 year long, painful but enlightening sojourn has ended today morning at 4am, when Curzon posted the results….don’t think I ll ever look back….and yes, i hope it had worked..but was not destined to…my perseverance surprised me…..9 damn years for an exam?…..damn it….now am done…..upsc is not the end…..good for them who cleared..all the best…..for those who didnt, there’s life beyond this guys!…cheers
I salute you ma’am. Please accept my best wishes for your future . You have been a warrior, the battlefields may change, but you are bound to emerge victorious in life.

Natasha ma’am
This is my first ever comment on any site. I do not like to comment here and there but yes, this time is indeed special!
The same thing happened with me, not in the UPSC case, but in another exam. That exam was a master degree entrance at IITs. I completed my education from rural schools and university, however after graduation I aspired to get into IITs. I looked over web for available options and my goodness, I found one exam at master level for general science graduates. I was so obsessed with the exam that I worked hard even for more than 16 hrs a day. But as you have rightly said,
” Is a uni-dimensional, full-hearted effort good enough? Is there really an effort-performance linkage? Is there ever a possibility that we are not pawns on a chessboard?” , I could not clear the exam, I reappeared next year, still result negative, re-reappeared in next year too..results screwed me again!…sacrificing four precious years just for a master degree entrance, I think is worth to record into ‘Guinness book of record’ for ridiculousness. However, I do not regret.
Now, I am preparing for UPSC. Once again, despite of working hard and and having average IQ, I could not clear prelims twice in 2013 and 2014. I do admit that my strategy went wrong in both attempts but as days are passing by, my trust on hard work is eroding day by day..But silver lining is that, I learnt to handle the most depressing moments of my life. Exams are for life, life is not for exams!..be cool, enjoy your life!
Respect you for your courage madam. But you shall certainly do well where ever you go. Best of luck.
And you are very correct. One exam is only one thing, not everything.
u are really a super girl, i also solute ur persnality
o dear, i want to salute u , ur spirit, what a sense u hv,,, great
I would highly Recommend you a book called ‘Master Key System’ by Charles F.Haanel. It changed the way I see and think about almost everything including success and failures. Hope it helps you too.
And Yes Kudos to your patience and perseverance. Happy Reading.
Respect… Ma’am ur courage n perseverance is commendable. In My opinion u r already a winner. Best wishes for ur life. :)
what an effort. i think ur dedication is laudable. you must guide other candidate like me…to what to do and what not. pls share ur experience of all those years of preparation bcz it will really helpful like a LIGHTHOUSE to sail the don’t think what otboat at to shore. i don’t think Failure is THE END. Ur goal suggests u a path to follow and its all upon effort and a little bit LUCK. But some times LUCK is more decisive. so, my humble request to u pls guide….bcz successful candidate tells us what to read how to prepare bur who lost the race teach us what to not do. what mistakes might be committed or what’s the situation and how to handle crucial juncture. I always tried to learn from others experience, specially a dedicated candidate like U. so please share ur mail ID and guide us .
Subhash my mail id is natver98@gmail.com…..feel free to mail ur doubts…will tell u what not to do for sure….as far as what to do, had I been in your place….i wud have done this….59 days….6 papers….4 GS n 2 of optional…Essay, english n language are not that tough…dont waste time on them…except essay.(think for some time abt ur direction in the essay once uve chosen the topic….strike the attention of the invigilator with the 1st and the last line of ur essay)..assuming u have confidence in them……..for the remaining super 6 papers…59/6 is roughly 9 days per paper…get ur syllabus right next to ur study table….lock urself in a room…cut off frm everyone…take every topic of syllabus…..8 points star marked for every damn topic in syllabus…in a notebook……finish it in 9 days each….think of it this way..if u spend more time than 7-8 minutes on the 1st 5 questions in any paper…u get tht much time less for the last questions in tht very paper…..don’t ever dare to specialise…treat all topics as important in the syllabus….try to sum all topics in 8-9 points….addd some grammar, and u get a 200 wrd answer…write, write write daily…in that 9 day per paper..stick to a ruthless schedule..pls dont waste time…..for optional..mine was pub ad..dont knw wat urs…so try to cover the whole portion at least twice in 18 days…yes it is possible…..every topic sum it up in ur notebook in 250 wrds..so tht if they ask u a 400 wrd, evenn then u’ll be safe……..be prepared for all kinds of shocks..upsc is known to beat everyone’s prediction….this time in mains u may see, who knows…answers lenght of 400 wrds…even in tht case…..tht strategy of each-topic-8-pointd will come handy….last but not the least..never trust upsc..
Woww natasha mam … the first word which came in my mouth after reading your comment … It shows the level of dedication , commitment , perseverance , passion , patience , strong will power , hard work , optimism , charismatic personality and many more qualities in you … u can not say that the journey ended here ..u can spread ur wisdom to many beginners and students from rural areas in the best possible way u feel like … for us u are a great source of inspiration and motivation…i read many interviews of toppers on this site but today i feel much more motivated after reading your comment .. although i gave prelims first time this year and could not clear but its a promise to you that i will surely never give up and will clear the exam next year … and whenever i will feel low i will remember about you and your qualities mentioned above .. REVERENCE FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND BEST WISHES FOR YOUR PROSPEROUS FUTURE …
IT’S NOT THE END BUT UNSEEN/HIDDEN INVESTMENT. YOU ARE A REAL INSPIRATION FOR ME AND ALL. (IT’S MY 5TH ATTEMPT. CLEAR .)
I AM SURE THE KNOWLEDGE YOU HAVE TODAY WILL GIVE YOU REAL PLEASURE IN YOUR LIFE , EVEN BETTER THAN UPSC.
I ALSO SALUTE YOU .
GOOD LUCK… AND WISH YOU TO REAP AND ENRICH THE FRUITS OF YOUR REAL INVESTMENT IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE.
THANK YOU.
Your Journey so far itself is an inspiration for us mam.
Mere result of an exam doesn’t make the difference at all as far as knowledge, skills, ability to perform etc are concerned.
The experience you have attained during preparation will certainly help you further in your life and you can guide a lot of aspirations as well.
All the very best for your future endeavours.
Well Natasha, I have been reading your comments for quite sometime now, and honestly they carry a lot of insight. I gave prelims for the first time this year, anticipated something around 215, couldn’t get through eventually.
People on this forum can be quite smart and quite insensitive at the same time. 9 years is quite some time, and I am very much sure they were good times for you too. Think of the times you learnt about the mighty Himalayas, about all that is right and wrong with this country, about economy and all other stuff. When you entered the arena you were a different individual than the one that is leaving it today. And this person is much smarter, much more educated and insightful. Life is going to throw up so much before you, and you would be so much better prepared to take it all. The fog in your eyes right now might be preventing you from looking back into what an incredible journey it has been, but trust me the fog is in your eyes, sooner than later it will go. Someday, at some stage of your life, you will be sitting in your plush balcony sipping coffee, while it rains outside. That one moment, out of nowhere, these 9 years will come as a flash to you. You will smile. That smile sums up life.
Whether or not we are pawns on a chessboard, I don’t know, but whatever game this is, it is one hell of a beautiful game. I believe in my creator. This may sound cliche, but trust me he has something incredible up his sleeve. Don’t fail him, he won’t fail you. You are just the kind of aware, informed citizen that this amazing country needs. Now that you are out of the web of exams, take your time and think how best to use all this that you learnt in a decade. A decade of learning, sure is a beautiful thing.
Life is all about the bigger picture, nobody knows it, everyone tries to anticipate it. Sometimes we underestimate our creator. Trust me, he got much more beauty than we can ever think of.
Go flutter like a butterfly, make this world a beautiful place. And remember the un-chaos theory: The flutter of a butterfly can cause happiness half way around the world.
hi abhishek

Such a brave effort you have given, 9 years of long preparation and you reached so close to the final list, my god!! I strongly believe that some one is up there who is watching you and giving you strength, Ma’am with all respect from the core of my heart I say best of luck, I am sure you will shine one day, and your this post will became the witness of your success.
I really appreciate your perseverance and will power madam… Really upsc is not the end of the life. The knowledge and experience u gained in your years of battles never let u down in life. U can do much more to society with that.. All the best for the rest of your life…
9 years of Not Giving up… u r a warrior indeed… may b rytnw u dont knw d reason of things happening to u but surely u will achieve somethng from this efforts n stuggles…who knows u can b the next MAHA CARORPATI on KBC …
what a courage!. A battle well fought. We respect your perseverance. A mere “All the best” may cut a little sorry figure. Don’t get disheartened. just think, there are thousand people just waiting to be like you what you are today irrespective of success/failures. All your experience may help some people. Be a tutor. teach all your learning. see your success in your students. We need another “mrunal”.
Regards,
Naveen
As much inspirational as a topper’s success story.. Take a bow. This year Overconfidence on Paper 2 killed me.. Was feeling like hell from yesterday.. And trying to figure out how to keep the momentum for the coming year. But your words made me feel “One More Step to your Destiney Give it all . “

Hi,
I am on the same platform, it was my 5th attempt and not cleared. I was started the journey of UPSC on 2008, its a 6 long year. Cleared Mains twice, but not in merit list.
I always follow the quote of – ” Soldier never quit untill he is dead”, Yesterday I was dead for UPSC.
My aspiration of becoming an IPS officer is now dream.
UPSC is just like my true Girl friend to whom I can’t get marry.
All the best to all who cleared the Pre.
Hi friend why r u saying ips a dream becoz if attempt increases any change in marks in interview .pls reply
Hi S K,
There is a hope that i will get one more attempt in 2015, but I am shattered. I could not make my mind.
Mrunal sir, please help me out.
Mast!!!!!! Motivational (y)
Sorry to hear about that Natasha. But yes there’s life beyond civil service exam and we all wish that you find all the peace and happiness in it.
My chapter is closed now Mrunal….will focus on my job as a journalist…Cheers to your effort man! You have no idea how many aspirants thank you every single day for your service to humanity….Keep it up!!
i gave my first attempt this time …. though not a fruitful one
reading your life in pursuit of upsc brought shivers down in my spine … at times it makes me sit and cry in a lonely noiseless pindrop silenced hard dark room with empty bottles readily available at arm’s-length distance to bang them left and right on all sides of the room’s wall …
some other times i feel like knowing what mistakes people like u were doing if u are 100 % aware of what uve done wrong so that one day i reap those fruits of the tree which is placed at 15 foot in length through a ladder’s help which is a herculian task ofcourse,
watever it is u must have seen pain and anguish after the whole process and offcourse joy while u were in the process of learning …try to relish that joy and wish u all the best in ur future for whatever u are choosing/doing with ur life
hi natasha..
why dont you try in state pcs exams..your knowledge will help you there..dont become philosophical just know you are worthy of passing some other good exam…keep trying..there’s no harm..at end you will succeed…you have studied so much that you can afford to try in such exams along with your journalism…or u either join any NGO…it will help u as well as nation too
Awesome priyanka….finally some sense
Natasha Mam,
From your experience the beginners like me understood the importance of Backup plan like Banking, SSC etc…..
With Solute to your commitment…….. I think you are addicted to upsc (for 9 yrs) and any addiction some time creates problem.
Hope you will soon come out of it and will start a new life(which may better than puppet/currupt IAS/IPS officer).
Very best of luck for future…………
Congrats Natasha on attaining freedom from this vicious cycle! Best wishes for future :)
Madam i can feel the hard work of 9 years.. i myself was the same last year. wrote mains twice, couldn’t get thru. all my attempts vanished as a bubble on 2nd aug at 9.15 p m or so… wanted only to be an administrator all thru my life and dreams… i was preparing since my final b.sc. was only to learn for 4 years after my M.Sc. i was totally zero… i said, “I am a good citizen by this lot of studies and knowledge gained”…wrote prasar bharti exam and cleared. thoght my destiny was that.. but then came a bonanza an afternoon….. 2 more attempts:) i was back in my room, with my best friend-books:) and my friends saved me… i cleared prelims….only word since then is study hard:) i will surely follow your words and suggestions:) you shine in a greater arena…. all the best..:) best wishes…

Dear Mrunal,
Thank you for your altruistic guidance ,towards numerous aspirants all over the country like me. I couldn’t make it this year, but i know who was at fault(me,me,me) , i sadly read some where from ur blog that u are in a bad financial state to maintain this website, and planning to end its maintenance…..PLEASE don’t do that, you will devoid millions of aspiring candidates from nation’s socio-economic rainbow, of your precious guidance.
I am following your blog for last one year or so,and have no doubt benefited from it,and so i do feel obliged to do some thing for your blog maintenance, I am presently under probation at a nationalised bank, and would be glad to extend any monitory support for ur blog, within my honest means(at least i can donate a part of my savings towards your noble cause, last year i wasn’t ,but i am in a position to do so..:) ). so please drop the idea of dumping this blog, as I too would be one of the biggest looser, as i too am taking up 2015 civils( thats wat they call it in my locality :P).
Regards .
Mooh band Kaam Chalu.
200+ OBC but not cleared Pre…. Any Idea About Cutoff
I was not able to clear the prelims this time.It was my second attempt in General category. The reason being foolish. The invigilators in my exams were not cooperative enough .They were talking loud again n again .Despite many reminders to keep them quiet they were not listening. It severely affected my performance in Paper-2.The 15 min disturbance made my 8 questions go wrong. Moreover At my centre in Jodhpur There was no announcement regarding the English Questions to be left out. That also created a chaos situation in the class with students confused whether to attempt it or not .Then i suggested teacher to write abt it on the board .So more 5 min wasted.
So my sugggestion to all fellow candidates is that if u face any such type of difficulty in Exam u need to contact with the UPSC Supervisor, which i didnt fearing that i wud loose the time ,which in the end proved too costly for me. Missed pre with External factors. It needs all favourable things from start to succeed in Pre.My Score in GS as per different keys was 110 but in CSAT only got 38 correct .Damn Bad luck .Good luck next time n due is the change in Exam Centre next year. Will file a complaint with UPSC 4 sure .Thanks Mrunal Boss 4 allowing to share the platform.
aptitude pape ris the key to success in prelims.. one cant humanly score very high in first paper ..its very difficult.. but it is very much possible to score well in aptitude section..work on aptitude next time ..all the best :)

Same situation here.
Infact even I could not clear SBI and RBI.
waise ek aur baat
Hame hollywood ke batman+superman+spiderman+beautiful mind(russell crowe) banne ki koi zarurat nhi hai.
Kyunki bollywood ka ek hi aadmi in sab combined se zyaada talented hota hai.
So let us become like some typical bollywood hero. eg KRRISH, etc.
I could not clear my 3rd prelim attempt. But Sir Mrunal you have been a true selfless teacher I have had ever met virtually.
Your guidance is boon for many unfortunates.

3rd that.. Please do that and give us some wisdom on how to go about filling this DAF as it is a very imp document for interviews…
Didn’t clear…..but thank you very much Mrunal Sir for your guidance, unselfish support and constant motivation…..
Dear Sir,
I belong to the ST category. My score according to Vajiram,Gaurav Agarwal and career launcher ranges between 190 -200. Unfortunately i couldnt find my roll no while some friends who have aggregated between 180-190 have cleared. The last time i scored 205 and got through. I was quite confident this time too. Is it possible that UPSC has made a mistake while compiling my result regarding my category and roll number. I tried calling the numbers provided on the upsc website but none was answered. Kindly please advice if there is anything i can do so that i may find some closure.
Could not clear this time(1st attempt) … calculated 215-220(g.c) from different keys but as mrunal sir says “Lord Curzon knows the final answer”.. i dont know what went wrong .. One thing i want to mention is that i cleared uppcs prelims this year (1st attempt) but now i m blaming myself for wasting 15-20 days just one month before upsc prelims for uppcs prelims … dat changed my style of study and could not get my lost rhythm back …. i followed mrunal sir for the last one year religiously … but during last days i could not read economic survey articles dat paid this result to me ….
But in the end thank u mrunal sir for ur guidance.. Mrunal sir please give ur wisdom for such type of situation .. help me ..and I hope you will come wid new strategies to tackle pre next year …
Best of luck for cleared ones’ for their mains….kudos guys !!!
Read all views and comments. Wat I m feeling right now is”adrenaline” rushing in my veins to gear u and pull my socks for csat 2015. And I won’t stop until I achieve it. Thanks mrunal. U rock.
I know consoling and lauding words are not what you need right now,so not daring to give them. But cant help standing up and giving you a respect-filled salute.I also do not dare to give you a lecture regarding how cruel life could be and how you should tackle it,for you know it way better than anybody else following this blog,I think. Yes madam. The answer is always inside you. You know it well. All the best. Will pray for you. :)
got tears in my eyes after a long time.. not cleared prelimns… Done very good in Delhi SI, but failed in 1.6 km run….
all the best to aspirants. please keep things in mind as bhai said.
never ever fancy your chances with UPSC , ALWAYS HAVE BACK UP OPTION [coz of sheer magnitude of aspirants pan india] UPSC is
NOT like your normal graduation/post graduation/certifications exams wher you can score some marks [35/100] to get thru.
My sincere advise for [know its d only thing we give free of cost] those who have lost the battle in prelims is to take a long breath , plan your studies for next one month and stick to the plan [if you were unable to stick to the plan to atleast 85% of your plan]….then pls stop the tryst with UPSC . It will not take you anywhere.
Did not clear this time. I take it in a positive way. My prep ws good BT not excellent . Specially mains. This ws my first attempt. But I am confident I will clear in 2015. Thnx mrunal sir fr all that u hv taught to us. Respect.
