UPSC has uploaded result for CSAT-2014 preliminary exam
- For Civil service click me ~16,900 candidates selected. (So Delhi-rumor that 20,000 will clear prelim turns out to be fake.)
- For Forest service click me ~1100 candidates selected.
I stopped applying in UPSC since a long time, but the gang members cum content writers Rajtanil and Shivaram have cleared
Moral of the story: sharing knowledge with others, doesn’t reduce your competitive chances.
@those who couldn’t clear CSAT-2014
I know how much it hurts. In 2008, I gave my first prelim and despite high hopes, I failed. Why?
- I had underestimated Delhi and all India level competition. So while my preparation was ‘good’ but not ‘excellent’- in terms of number of hours spent every day in reading, revision and practice.
- Pushed too much luck in negative marking to cross imaginary cutoffs.
- I had relied on chronicle, wizard, CST for both current affairs and static-theory preparation using their ‘prelim-special history-geography-science’ etc. editions.
- I did not touch Hindu because I thought those magazines were sufficient. Besides Hindu paper wasn’t available at my place, so it gave me convenient excuse from that majoori.
- I read NCERTs and Laxmikanth, but in a causal manner, hardly any revision.
- I never bothered to solve past UPSC papers on my own – to find the source of question and topicwise trend. Otherwise I would not have made the mistakes number 3, 4 and 5.
- I did not maintain notes for anything.
- I did not prepare aptitude in exhaustive manner, only mugged up a few formulas and “read” a few sums. I was a math-hater therefore a grave-digger myself.
- In those pre-CSAT years, we had to give optional subject’s paper as well. In Public Administration, I had prepared Laxmikanth but, did not focus on Mohit, Prasad etc, nor did I maintain notes for the thinkers and their quotes.
Back in those days, internet was a ‘luxury’, and hardly any online resources available. All the “How-to” was concentrated only in the coaching factories of Delhi.
The world has changed a lot in last six years. But those who fail in prelims, they continue to make similar set of mistakes even today. and 2014, new factors crept in:
- Anti-CSAT protests, whether Government will postpone the prelim or not? That uncertainty would have affected preparation of many.
- CSAT-2014 was rather a trend breaker particularly in the environment-agro part as we saw during answer key analysis. But in such unusually tough papers, the first timers make silly mistake of ticking too many MCQs on gut-feeling, in fear of ‘imaginary cutoffs’, thus dig their own graves.
Anyways, the debate over cutoffs, question quality, UPSC’s back-breakingTM and back-strengtheningTM moves- will never end. But at some point, you’ve have to find and rectify the mistakes. Otherwise, can’t hope for a different result, if you keep doing the same things. And the nature of UPSC exam is such that you’ll end up wasting 3-4 attempts without even realizing that time has passed so quickly and precious years of youthlife are gone.
- Large scale vacancies announced in ACIO and NICL. You can check their last dates on left hand navigation column.
- Soon IGNOU will launch registration forms for its PG programs for December cycle. do register yourself for any decent course of your choice.
As I keep saying never put all eggs in one basket. Always have “backup” ready in advance. The fact that you care to read this far- shows that you’re a serious player, and I’ve no doubt that you’ll be a successful person sooner or later. But Hard work, perseverance and at the ability to learn from mistakes= essential.
@Those who cleared
Congratulations. Next stage: you’ve to fillup a new form called “DAF application form”

un-helpdesk because they rarely respond, and every guy gives a new or vague answer: 011-23385271, 011-23098543 or 011-23381125
RTI stonewalling continues
This time, Lord Curzone specifically mentioned in the result PDF itself that:
- they won’t release Answerkey and cutoffs before entire process is over (i.e. 2015- after interview and final selection)
- They won’t entertain any RTI in this regard.
I had won this case at CIC level few years ago, but UPSC went to high court. Since then just Taarikh pe taarikh and I don’t even have Sunny Deol to fight my case.

Second attempt —failure again………
Anyways need to be back for 2015……..
Thanks for ur help mrunal
This was my third attempt.did not clear.performance in the second paper proved to be a death blow to me .while I was correct with 63plus questions in the first paper, barring controversial,I could solve only 33 questions in paper2 and got 3-4 wrong .I come from rural background and preparing without any coaching.I got in to govt service while I was 22 years old as second division assistant then I got selected as first division assistant and worked in cooperative department .then I selected for the panchayat development officer job and worked for 3 years .now since last one year I have been working as lecturer in govt p u collage .meanwhile I wrote the state public service commission exam and got interview call but the govt of karnataka took a bold decision of not accepting the selection list since there were plenty of evidences of rampant corruption . because of my family background,it was very very necessary for me to get in to a job and in this entire process It was/is highly impossible for me to adjust time for coaching .Mrunal sir please guide me how can I deal with the second paper confidently and sufficiently without coaching ?
Well of course I’m not the one whom you wanted answer from but still I’ll be nosy.
Take of for one month, get rid of this negativity which creeps into everyone.
In this taking of, don’t stop reading newspaper,Yojna,Kurukshetra,Magzine. Finish all the little things that later pile up
Until December, study paper 2. Begin from concepts, not from competitive books. Start doing the basics of 1+1, then do a solved competitive book like R.S Aggarwal & finally do a Mrunal’s prescribed book. Finish this up till January & continue reading paper+Y+K+Mag+Mrunal+ other websites & your optional subject.
From February, do complete G.S, it will not take you more than 3 months to re-re-revise.
Final 3.5 months for complete revision.
Don’t ignore paper 2. But with good command on paper 1, you’ll surely find mains easy, do while studying for pre, keep practising answer writing.
Disclaimer:
I’m no life coach, guru, or civil service expert. I’m just some random guy
Thank you brother .
& one more thing. Do not ignore your optionals. Go, reinvent your self. Keep pushing, keep struggling.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different result each time.
Just a small suggestion, instead of using RK Agrawal for Maths section in Paper-2, go for M. K. Tyra. This is because, in former book, many questions are repetitive in nature which is good from the POV of Banking exams but not for CSAT level. For CSAT level, you just need to brush-up your math fundamentals & little practice. For this, MK Tyra is good. For reasoning, you can rely on RK Agrawal selected sections thereby practicing 10-20 questions from each exercise.
I adopted similar strategy & got between 125-130 marks (as per keys) this time.
Hi Kapil…same story here…I also selected as LIC AAO at the age of 22, came from rural background…left the job for preparing CSE…In my earlier two attempts could not able to clear prelims, especially was facing lot of difficulty in CSAT paper…in my last two attempts got 100+ marks in GS but could not able to cross even 100 in CSAT paper, took it as a challenge…this time I cleared it…one thing I want to tell you is DONT GIVE UP…solve as much test papers as you can…search in net or if you have any friends in Delhi/Chennai/Hyderabad…request them to send at least 25 mock papers (CL+Time is best papers to solve)…solve all of them, even dont leave on the exam day eve…initially fix time of 2.30 min and gradually reduce it to 2.00….ALL THE BEST
mrunal sir wholehrted gratitude fr ur guidance..hi kapil am vt ur same situation selected fr pdo cleared kas n a lecturer at pu colge i hail frm a smal town vtout any exposure to civil service prepration no coaching so it took years fr me to get to knw abt dis xam pattern ..collectg materials etc after so much of circus still i cud nt make it dis tym too ..bt decided not to gv up ..let us try harder again sir..i believe hard work vl nvr fail gudluck
Hi Mrunal!
Was able to survive the initial onslaught. Moving ahead I would like to say that I really appreciate what you are doing here. Mrunal.org has been a great help all the way. Keep up the good work! Also I guess agree with Gaurav Agrawal that the site could have been more user-friendly.
Thanks again. Good luck to all the people writing mains. Same goes for people who did not clear. Having attempted the exam twice (couldn’t clear pre in the first attempt), I would just like to say that dont repeat your mistakes!
As per on DoPT Notice, it is written that “Candidates of CSE2011 will be given one additional attempt in 2015. So please Mrunal Sir tell that “ALL CSE 2011 ASPIRANTS” will be given one additional attempt in 2015 or “ONLY WHOSE 2011 was LAST ATTEMPT”….
Please clearify so that we can start for CSE2015 ..thanks alot…Satish
As per on DoPT Notice, it is written that “Candidates of CSE2011 will be given one additional attempt in 2015. So please Mrunal Sir tell that “ALL CSE 2011 ASPIRANTS” will be given one additional attempt (i hope this is independent of age and no of attempt….but not sure) in 2015 or “ONLY WHOSE 2011 was LAST ATTEMPT”. From the lines written in that pdf it looks that “ALL (all those who appeared) ASPIRANTS of CSE2011” will get chance in 2015 (but not sure) so Please clarify so that we can start preparation for CSE2015 .thanks alot…Satish
Cn u pls provide d link??
Cleared alllllllllll……………………….!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i didnt get thru but where can we check our score?
feeling very sad that i couldn’t clear. this was my second attempt. I thought i gave my best, but obviously i could have done better.. :(
Every time I feel I improved my score. I guess cut-off also improves itself :( Missed twice. Next year last attempt.
Hi Guys I think the cutoff is 206 for General cat.confirmed from lot of my Delhiwala friends.
hey puneet wat abt obc cut-off….???
hey puneet wat abt obs cut -off..??
oh please… 2 of my friends got 220 gen. cat and 215 obc but still couldnt….so cut the crap of…and you know what from the past 3 years they have been giving mains and this time they couldnt even prelims…so dont spread such kind of rumours
n we are from mukherjee nagar delhi
dekh utkal bhai..i know its hard not to get selected in prelims…….lekin cut off definitely 210 ke as pass hai …mera 215 ke as pass aa raha tha ……in gen and i got selected….even i had no hope…..lekin ho gaya……agar kisi ka 220 aa raha hai to usne jaroora marks add karne me kuch galti ki hogi means ki wrong answer ko correct samajh liya hoga..in this year there were many confusing questions..
yep could be possible of some variations of somewhere around minus 5
how did u get the score..most of the key of aptitude section have got them wrong including career launcher and ias toppers blog..even in gs section there were 10 question which were considered doubtful by mrunal..when at least 20 questions are doubtful the commenting that “my score is xyz” is naive .. if u feel u have been cheated do complain but plz stop quoting marks as tehy are just speculative marks and not the factual one
oh pls for god sake how could you even mention career launcher….just a piece of advice Dont rely onThem, n we always rely on answer keys of vision ias and mrunals plus (not to forget ALS and Vajiram). N yeah read again i didnt said my score i said my friends score n i am not complaining at all but just saying that spreading rumours when one himself/herself is not sure is not good…. n yeah dont say speculations bcoz those who have been writing mains from past 3-4 years are not fool but hard core contenders…
it was an unexpected result
3rd attempt at preliems. Did not clear. Made a mess in paper II. Gotta do something about it…
To those who did not clear: I empathise
To all those who cleared: All the best!
To Mrunal sir and the team: Thank you for the work till now + Looking forward to the precious articles and guidance in future…
not cleared..4th attempt…so sad but wat can we do is only focus on nxt xam…leaving behind any negativity..in us…those who clrd prepr hard for mains…nd those who like me….get ready for nxt year…”ek kadam safalta ki aur”…
Cdnt clear,it was my second attempt :(
Can those ppl who cleared suggest a strategy? Also I’m willing to have virtual combined study.
I’m planning to take up management as optional.
If anyone interested plz reply :)
Last year i gave mains…but couldn’t clear prelims this time..it ws my third attempt…I wud be more than happy to participate in your virtual combined study..
Ohh.. don’t worry.. u will surely do it in 2015. Lets start our preparation again.. what was ur optional for Mains?
All the best!
My optional subject is public administration.. But rite now i am thinking of starting from da scratch….All willing can watsapp me on 9671568138
hey even m interested in virtual study, m serious aspirant, missed out csp 2014 by narrow margin.
my email id rj00019@gmail.com
Ya..I am also interested in virtual group. But I am neither on facebook nor on watsapp.
My first suggestion.-
Do not take mgmt optional because it is lengthy and dynamic and if you can do other optional in less time because u can focus on your GS.
MBA background and cleared UGC NET JRF in Management subject but i hav selected other optional like Pub adm or geography. so take pragmatic decision .
Thanks for ur suggestion Viplove.
I wanted to get an insight on disadvantages of choosing Management as optional.
I thought Management would be a better option as I have done MBA too.. but wasn’t sure if I should choose Pub Adm given the length of the syllabus. If I choose Pub Ad or any other subject, will have to start it from the scratch.
But if Pub Adm is comparatively easier and gives me time to prepare other subjects well…then I will keep in my while finalizing my subject, still a ltl confused.
Hi Ahana,
How do you suggest we should start our virtual group and where?
Sinh5… as my optional is pub ad and has experienced of writing mains too..i think we together can start preparing it altogether again..As I am feeling a bit difficult to start it altogether again alone.
Is it paper 2 or paper 1 that stopped u from clearing?
What i did for paper 2 is working out all mental ability questions that was asked by upsc in prelims from 1990s…
I got 8 or 9 repetition questions for paper 2 and it saved my time, NOTE EVERY TIME UPSC DOES THIS.
Then i looked for similar questions and any shortcuts for time-distance, time-work etc… surely this can again save ur time, then about comprehension u can solve higher level passages for eg that of GMAT, i got one hard copy from a friend and was able to do it, since it was a level higher than csat it definitely helped me… and ultimately I got 5 mins left in paper 2 after completing that paper…
So my kind advice is to work out this plan for paper 2…
If it’s paper1- again u have to refer previous questions- this time there was no repetition in paper1, but i had a base of all topics of GS MAINS, alongwith culture part- i referred nitin singhania notes and gktoday… i attempted less because i felt the paper was tough from the first question… but i scored well in geography and envt since geography is my optional subject…
Score was around 250-260… cleared IFoS too… anyway good luck
Old player. Taking my 4th attempt after 3 years. Previously 2/3 success rate. My first try with new format.
Cleared.
Reason –
1. Followed Mrunal’s advice. “tukka math lagana”.
2. Followed his study plan. Especially – “don’t unrealistically read all hindu papers 2 weeks to exam”. “prev day read doesn’t help”. Only revision helps. Previously, used to prepare new topics previous day. This time, played badminton.
3. Lot of team work. 4 of us, taking up weekly tests on our own, preparing our own paper for paper-1 and practising paper-2 from some csat mock paper. 2/4 ppl cleared.
Mrunal, u have been of so much help. Basically approach changed from basing my preparation on finishing xyz books to covering the syllabus and Q paper trend..
Look forward to mains! :)
Congratulation for yr success……..
Can u plz tell me through which news in newspaper should i go for economics for upsc exams both for pre and mains …………
As well which is the best book through which i can understand basic concepts of economics as my eco is extremely weak. i am a reader of THE HINDU newspaper ……
So plz help me if possible
Thanks a lot…………..
Sir,
Thanks a lot. Your articles, NCERT and the Hindu helped me to clear the CSP-2014. I was not sure to clear it so I haven’t started studying. Now what How to prepare from today onwards. Please HELP. i am also working in a govt. company.
to those who didn’t clear (esp. SENIOR PLAYERS): guys this was my fifth attempt and i cleared prelims and i have cleared every prelims from my 1st attempt. on the other hand my friend never cleared prelims in his 1st 3 attempts and in his 4th attempt he cleared everything and became an IAS officer. i am still a tool typing this.
the point am trying to make is clearing prelims can sometimes be bad. this is the main reason, people keep on attempting this exam for years on end. its easy to fall into this vicious cycle after clearing prelims (and not clearing mains) because u will not have much time to think about whats going on as the next prelims will be around the corner and so on it goes
this exam needs solid preparation for at least a year. so those who did not clear prelims this time ,have hell a lot of time to prepare in a more holistic manner. eg. if someone (like me) did not prepare for a year and may be i even clear mains and interview will lie for sure somewhere near the bottom of the pile, getting some stupid central service and anyway trying to write the exam again next year but guys who din clear prepares well for a year might end up in the top 100.
i know this might be too soon to digest failure but give it time. time is the best medicine. and about u r problems 80% DONT CARE ABOUT U R PROBLEMS and 19% ARE HAPPY THAT U HAVE IT. talk it out with u r parents or best friend or girlfriend or whatever. then move on. sometimes failing in prelims is the best thing that can happen to u. sorry if i sound self righteous –never whine. buck up
80% DONT CARE ABOUT U R PROBLEMS and 19% ARE HAPPY THAT U HAVE IT. talk it out with u r parents or best friend or girlfriend or whatever. then move on.
-Noteworthy advice Crazyfrog.
“sometimes failing in prelims is the best thing that can happen to u.”
I never thought this site will bring soo many people close to each other. Normally we don’t share our personal feeling but somehow I can see many people getting connected here emotionally and psychologically.
The best thing is the motivation that we can get from others experience..Here One person is stopping the struggle after just 1 or 2 attempt on the other hand we have someone who is still living in with the “saddam hussain in himself”.
Jo saath phoolo ke chale, Jo dhaal paate he dhaale
Wo Jindagi kya Jindagi jo Sirf Pani se bahe..!
It’s time to look forward not backward. So wake up and don’t stop until you reach your goal.
My short story:- Failed in Pre for the second time. But refusing to give up.
Msg To Mrunal:- There are still many people who can benefit from you. There are still many eklavyas without internet connection. If you feel like reaching and helping them. Please Let me know.
anubhav jindagi ka.. good!!
thks mrunal..actually the saying is 20% dont care..i dont want to be that much pessimistic. i think and atleast hope that everybody has 1% or 1 person that cares
yahi baat toh samajhne waali h .. -_-
Thanxs a ton for what u have written here.. ! :) U have no idea how much life it has given to me…failed in my second attmpt..have been sick for a day after the result..I guess this was the piece of advise I was looking for…thenq again!
thanks for ur advice…… i could not cleared pre2014……..will take it as an opportunity for what u said”” SOLID PREPARATION OF ONE YEAR””’
good for u man.. and pls remember that clearing prelims is not an end in itself.. its a stepping stone (rather just a screening test) to something more bigger– that needs more focus, dedication and discipline. and most 1st attempters who have cleared this time (by border) would have wasted time in speculating cut offs, result date and bashing UPSC (inspite of ample warning from mrunal) for delayed results and will be confused as how to complete the mains syllabus in just 59 days! …at best they will be in the bottom pile and at worst (most certainly) wont clear mains… so dont worry about ppl who cleared, SC/ST, OBC Vs OC unfairness, so- called CSAT enginnering / english bias etc etc simply bcos its not in ur control and u cant change a thing…world is not fair but thats the way it is. just play within the rules and make the most of it.
thanks .. nice way to put it in such words … didnt clear this time — hoping for 2015
beautifully said crazy frog….what u said is really true
not cleared… was looking up for some motivation…. words of wisdom “sometimes failing in prelims is the best thing that can happen to u”
thank u crazyfrog….
Not through, second attempt, last year gave mains, feeling so bad. But thank you for all your help sir. For sure, will never give up.
Cleared with 255 ~ 260 marks. It is my first attempt. Although I have a long way to go, I can at least share few strategies / mistakes during my preparation so that first timers / people who couldn’t clear don’t commit them.
1. Please mug up Ancient India and Medieval India (11th class old NCERT) and NIOS. There is no escaping away from Art and Culture as far as UPSC goes.
2. Go through Shankar IAS Academy Environment Module. It’s simply awesome ! I had just read it once and could answer many questions based on intelligent guessing in the exam.
3. While ticking the answers if you have doubt between two options (not three). Take the risk otherwise it’s extremely difficult to score more than 100 marks in paper I.
4. Stay away from bogus cut copy paste magazines available in the market. You will only ruin your chances.
Finally revision is the key to success. There is no point reading too many books if you can’t revise them at least 5-6 times. I committed a blunder by not making notes for any subject and the day before the exam I literally sat blank as I couldn’t figure out what to revise ! As a result I made mistakes in simple questions like Balance of Payment, Arab Spring, Coral Reefs, Swat Valley, Green Climate Fund, Earth Hour, Barak River etc.
Thanks Bhavesh.Congrats as well as best of luck for mains.I will be giving prelims in 2015 for the first time and will definetly follow your advice.
… cleared without any serious effort i must admit, thanks for paper II , a very dedicated friend who left no stone unturned in sending me yoru articles over whatapp to read in between job, lunch and where not, and of course to You, Mrunal Sir… Now I need your serious help to do good in mains too, I am in a full time job which sucks out 12 hrs of the day ( including traveling and overtime) … cant take any leaves except for exams , what are the things that I should and should not read – to keep the chances for me alive in this fight of David and Goliath… :)
Hi Abhishek,
Congratulations & good luck for Mains.
What was your strategy for Prelims, despite this hectic work?
Hi abhishek. My question is also same as Sinh5.Kindly reply.I am also a working professional. Thanks in advance.
Hi abhishek
Even I’m in a full-time job.Didn’t clear this time. Pls share your strategy. It will be very useful for lot of us.
Couldn’t clear Prelim,it was first attempt.i hardly studied for two weeks but was confident enough that i cud make it.
But this time i am more focussed and hope will make it next time.
Keep us inspiring,mrunal sir.
Oh brother were u high or something? Preed for 2 weeks n was feeling confident? Go get a reality check..this is not akad bkd type test ,here serious candidates r putting their careers on the line in order to pursue their dream. N u were thinking by studying for two weeks u would make it through? Such thinking is an insult to the toughest n the most prestigious exam of the country.
So please stop posting such irresponsible comments especially for this exam.
it is the toughest exam but some ppl do manage to clear with comparative less effort..scoring big in aptitude is the key..personally know some ppl who didnt prepare much but cleared prelims..though they failed in mains..
hehehe…really that sorts of comment really hurts and demoralized….
sir, i starting prepration of upsc 2015
please suggest me,which coaching is best for hindi medium in delhi?
Couldn’t clear :(. My second attempt.
Those who cleared all the best for Main and final Interview.
Also plz suggest a strategy for ppl who cdn’t clear.
I am interested in virtual combine study. If any body is interested plz reply.
Also I am planning to take up Management as optional. Plz reply if anyone is taking up Management as optional.
I FAILED GUYS ,, LKNG 4 IAS 2015, NNNNNNNNNNNN ALL D BEST FOR MAINS EXAM 2 THOSE WHO IS CELEBRATING SINCE YESTERDAY……………
Hello sir… First attempt w/o prep… Just to get a feel of exam… I did prepare for 2 months though… 203 by vajiram key… Knew that wasn’t enough for civil it’s not a joke… Geared up for 2015 attempt… I now have experience learnt a lot from this feel attempt… Was over confident about csat… N it taught me a good lesson about time management and that level of upsc can change any day… Under estimated csat level by referring 2013 paper… Cost me well in 2014… Won’t repeat the same mistakes again… Also learnt that hard work in GS does pay off… Gas for sure is not a gamble of guess work… Ur work Mrunal sir is really commendable… I refer ur site regularly… Awesome job! Congrats all who crossed the river this time.. And those who could not… Let’s give it a punch once again with full strength.. Mission 2015!!!
I don’t have my roll number. I have my reg ID. How can I get roll number to check my result

Not cleared this time again. Third time repeatatively :(
missed 2012 by 2 marks n 2013 by 4 marks and now getting 215-235(varying as per different keys)
Though exhausted all attempts last year but got this miraculous attempt. Thought it was made for me. Prepared really hard all the 5 years of preparation. Enjoyed my studies, did all what serious candidate should do. I really enjoyed the UPSC arena all around, just lived and eat with that.
But every time this results break my heart for some hours, but I m ready n geared up again for next and my last attempt for 2015.
Journey for Civil Services Exam has really made me stronger and every time the result though it shatters my hope but I rise up again and live my life happily.
Just have a safe career, earn for yourself, be financially stable, don’t be burden on your parents. Love and respect your current job and prepare alongwith job and enjoy your studies. This struggle will become really enjoyable and there is nothing to loose even if you don’t ‘get the Rank, We earn knowledge and courage to face anything.
Apart from NaNMo, I am really fan of Mrunal for such a good, valuable and free of cost guiding platform. You are really living upto expectations of our country’s ideology that ज्ञान बांटने से बढ़ता है और ये मुझे कही से प्राप्त हुआ है तो इसे मुझे आगे बांटना चाहिए | आपका बहुत बहुत आभार और धन्यवाद
someone plz tell me exactly hw many chances/attempts r there for an openmerit candidate at present.
6 attempts for general category student
And one more if one of those six attempts was in 2011
even i didnt clear:( 2nd attempt..
thanks to mrunal I got selected for state excise si…happy to have it as backup…
