Question from a Visitor
Could you please tell me what should I study for the post of Assistant Commissioner of Employee provident fund I have checked the syllabus but if you could tell me what should I study(I mean reference books etc.).
Readymade books for APFC exam
- Exams like APFC are not taken at regular interval, so whenever such exam comes, some bogus moneyminded publication houses, just copy paste few paragraphs and pages related to the syllabus topics, from other books and publish a Guidebook for APFC exam, containing 300 pages!
- After 1 month, These people will just change the book cover release the same content for Sales Tax inspector’s exam! Therefore such bogus quality readymade books or study material does not serve much purpose.
- Reason: Many candidates also prepare simultaneously for UPSC, State PSC, Banks, SSC and similar jobs therefore competitive level is always very high. You need to have your basic concepts clear and foundations strong. Don’t try to look for shortcuts using such readymade books. (Same Advice for RBI officer, LIC AAO and other similar exams.)
Cost Factor
The General Studies Manual (TMH, Unique, Spectrum) are quite expensive. They’re written for UPSC exam hence very thick and heavy. But the entire manual is not relevant for APFC exam, you’ve to do selective study of only a few topics. So better just borrow it from some friend or try to get an old copy.
Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) comprises the following major topics/ broad areas.
The medium of the test will be both English and Hindi.
Paper 1 General English
The questions in General English component of the test will be designed to evaluate candidate’s understanding of English language and workman-like use of the words.
Please go through the separate article on ( how to prepare English for APFC exam. Click Me)
Paper 2 General Studies
Note: whenever I mention NCERT, know that it is legally downloaded for free, in Hindi or English from the official website of NCERT (http://www.ncert.nic.in/ )
Now talking about specific topics under Assistant Provident Fund manager’s exam.

| Current Events |
|
| Indian Culture Heritage |
|
| Freedom Movements |
Note: Syllabus clearly says “Freedom movement” so read only Post-1857 period, no need to read Ancient (Harappa) or Medival (Mughals). |
| Population | Don’t know, what exactly this means! May be Human Geography class 11/12 book of NCERT could help. |
| Development and Globalization | See if there are some pdf files on www.egyankosh.ac.in (you’ll need to register there to download files, but it is free.) |
| Governance and Constitution of India | The best book ever written: relevant for all exams Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth (TMH Publication) Thorough revision for 5-7 times. Do all mock questions given at the end of his book. |
| Present Trends in Indian Economy |
You may also use
NOT Recommended Books: Mishra Puri, Dutt Sundaram, Uma Kapila. Because they’re written from academic point of view, we only need some basic and essential concepts from “Exam point of view”. Similarly I donot recommend Pratiyogita Darpan’s “Special” book on Indian Economy for its obsession with numbers and other trivial information. |
| Accountancy and Auditing | Use National Open School (NOS) material: Click MEYou can use NCERT books. I think class 11/12 has these subjects.OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in (may be in BA/MA Economics section) Or if they’re asking deep questions, you may use Unique Publication’s book on “Commerce” optional subject for UPSC. It has elaborate chapters on Audit and Account. |
| Industrial Relations & Labour Laws | Search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Insurance | OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications | If you’re comfortable with computers, then I don’t think any special preparation is required. Else use NCERT’s books on Computer (may be class 10,11,12) or may be Pdf files from www.egyankosh.ac.in for any certificate courses on computer. |
| General Science | NCERT class 7 to 10 (Freely downloaded from official site) (for additional grip) Science portion from Tata Macgrawhill General Studies Manual. |
| Geography | NCERT Class 7 to 10 (Social Science) + Class 11-12 (Geography) should be more than sufficient. And then you may solve the MCQs given in the (for additional grip) GS Manual. |
| Elementary Maths & Statistics | Many people appear for IBPS and SSC have really good grip over aptitude portion. They’ll also appear for Asst. Provident fund. Hence competition becomes really tough. One should be thoroughly prepared for maths and aptitude topic.
The standard reference books for aptitude would be (relevant for any exam starting from Bank Clerk to CAT) However, if you don’t have so much time to go through both of above books, may be you can use IBPS Manual of Disha Expert |
| General Mental Abilities | Same as above. |
There are only two rules to crack this exam
- For Non-aptitude (history, polity etc) Revise – revise – revise
- For aptitude (math,logical reasoning) practice- practice-practice.

In my exam centre hall they gave question paper before bell at 09:40 and many people stareted answering from 09:40 and invigilators were outside chatting .

yaar nobody can tell you accurate cutoff…but it wont go above 55, i can assure you…
GEN ka cutoff wont go above 60-62…those students who are predicting high cut-off first must match their answers and just see how many people are getting above 70…and there is negative marking too…
m completly agree wid u. hv seen such dilemma before upsc pt result too n i knw cut off really goes low.
.i M A FARMER SO I M TELLING U JOWAR COTTON AND ARHAR CAN B CULTIVATED WITHOUT OF LACK F WATER SO ANS IS B ie 1 2 3 R CORRECT

and cut off may be arround 75.
sizable number of answers are wrong in dude , i have given upsc pre and many its questions were directly asked and u have done same mistakes which i did in pre , thats why cut off of 75 is an imagination
No one with solution of set – c ??????
plz someone share the solution of set c…
All the hardwork done had gone in drain it seems. The level was below bank PO EXAM.
The paper was very easy.I wasted my 10 days mandatory leave for the preparation , had I known that such will be the level I should not have wasted my time and effort.
I had done 72percent but it seems the cut off will go above 80 anyway.
enjoy ur post.
set B answer for Q-2 is wrong. Correct answer is (a).
The right answer of Q100 IN A SET B will be (a) & of Q98 will be c……!!!
After going through this blog i came to know that almost all the choices of the questions were correct(or wrong simulteneously!!) now i think the cutoff will be 100 or 00 so the either nobody will be selected or everybody will be selected..
;)
mai to baukhla gaya…
:D
Hello friends….. I think this year paper was easy as compared to 2002 and 2004. Permutation and combination, probability questions were the biggest hurdles for non engineering students in previous years. I think upsc has simply given easy paper just to increase the cutoff marks. Even the marks differing by decimals will make a great difference. And we must remember competition will be tough as number of seats is less. So now everything depends on interview. Those who have attempted paper well start preparing for the interview. All the best
upsc played smartly this time.they knew that people are preparing these areas.any how cut off will decided on these odd 100 questions only.question was from whole syllabus.nobdy can have full command on those areas.here lies competition.few mistake,u are out of race, just like shooting competition in olympic.
Yeah lalit that’s very true. I think I found the paper comparatively easy as i appeared for the CSAT 2012 however didn’t get through. Around 5-6 questions were directly from CSAT 2012. And all the topics from the syllabus was also covered.
its ridiculous to think that paper was easy or tough , when 300 odd vacancies are there and no mains is there after y’day’s exam then no baba will make it comfortably ,because everyone has attempted 75-85 questions and after negative marking everyone will fall around 55-65 band so its not csp where everyone with 50-55% is going to qualify.I think question paper was quite comprehensive and after a week everyone out here will struggle to score past 60.right now even bank po candidates will be excited and must be scoring above 85 but wait for a week or two and everyone will fall below 60
u are right man. u are true baba
I agree that the cut off discussion for an upsc exam is not so smart a work. This years civil services pre testifies to it.many unexpected results, infact unexpected results are the norm for upsc:):)
I think Rohan you are very true in your words,it is very difficult to predict the cut off within 24 hours of exam.According to me this paper is dicey,as few questions are very easy & some are confusing.Remember in upsc exams you have to give the best answer not the correct answer.I think after considering negative marking cut off for general may very from (55-60)%.
around 40 queston were of lolli pop nature.but, around 40 question were of upsc level.
donot believe.see ur paper again and analyse it.it was not meant for bank po guys. it was meant for future apfc.
I completely agree with you Lalit…I dont know how people are predicting cut-offs high as 80…I think no one must have attempted over 80-85 qns…
It true that 50% question were quite easy…so the game is with the remains with the other 50%…
Dear Admin/Everyone,
Has anyone got Test Booklet C of APFC Examination 2012? Looks like they had given wrong options in the answer for Question 100. Here is the reproduction of the Question:(C Series)

hi guys,
I have done fairly well in APFC exam. I answered 92 questions, out of which I could gather answers for about 80. Of which, I am scoring 66 excluding the negative answers. I’m not sure whether this would qualify me for the Interview. Please find below the key for your reference. All the best….

“The EPFO provides comprehensive social security to employees and their family members, according to its website. It is a financial institution that publicly manages old-age income security. Unions have warned of widespread industrial unrest if the government notification is not revoked.” (from Frntline – http://www.frontlineonnet.com/fl2907/stories/20120420290712400.htm)
