Question from a Visitor
Could you please tell me what should I study for the post of Assistant Commissioner of Employee provident fund I have checked the syllabus but if you could tell me what should I study(I mean reference books etc.).
Readymade books for APFC exam
- Exams like APFC are not taken at regular interval, so whenever such exam comes, some bogus moneyminded publication houses, just copy paste few paragraphs and pages related to the syllabus topics, from other books and publish a Guidebook for APFC exam, containing 300 pages!
- After 1 month, These people will just change the book cover release the same content for Sales Tax inspector’s exam! Therefore such bogus quality readymade books or study material does not serve much purpose.
- Reason: Many candidates also prepare simultaneously for UPSC, State PSC, Banks, SSC and similar jobs therefore competitive level is always very high. You need to have your basic concepts clear and foundations strong. Don’t try to look for shortcuts using such readymade books. (Same Advice for RBI officer, LIC AAO and other similar exams.)
Cost Factor
The General Studies Manual (TMH, Unique, Spectrum) are quite expensive. They’re written for UPSC exam hence very thick and heavy. But the entire manual is not relevant for APFC exam, you’ve to do selective study of only a few topics. So better just borrow it from some friend or try to get an old copy.
Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) comprises the following major topics/ broad areas.
The medium of the test will be both English and Hindi.
Paper 1 General English
The questions in General English component of the test will be designed to evaluate candidate’s understanding of English language and workman-like use of the words.
Please go through the separate article on ( how to prepare English for APFC exam. Click Me)
Paper 2 General Studies
Note: whenever I mention NCERT, know that it is legally downloaded for free, in Hindi or English from the official website of NCERT (http://www.ncert.nic.in/ )
Now talking about specific topics under Assistant Provident Fund manager’s exam.

| Current Events |
|
| Indian Culture Heritage |
|
| Freedom Movements |
Note: Syllabus clearly says “Freedom movement” so read only Post-1857 period, no need to read Ancient (Harappa) or Medival (Mughals). |
| Population | Don’t know, what exactly this means! May be Human Geography class 11/12 book of NCERT could help. |
| Development and Globalization | See if there are some pdf files on www.egyankosh.ac.in (you’ll need to register there to download files, but it is free.) |
| Governance and Constitution of India | The best book ever written: relevant for all exams Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth (TMH Publication) Thorough revision for 5-7 times. Do all mock questions given at the end of his book. |
| Present Trends in Indian Economy |
You may also use
NOT Recommended Books: Mishra Puri, Dutt Sundaram, Uma Kapila. Because they’re written from academic point of view, we only need some basic and essential concepts from “Exam point of view”. Similarly I donot recommend Pratiyogita Darpan’s “Special” book on Indian Economy for its obsession with numbers and other trivial information. |
| Accountancy and Auditing | Use National Open School (NOS) material: Click MEYou can use NCERT books. I think class 11/12 has these subjects.OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in (may be in BA/MA Economics section) Or if they’re asking deep questions, you may use Unique Publication’s book on “Commerce” optional subject for UPSC. It has elaborate chapters on Audit and Account. |
| Industrial Relations & Labour Laws | Search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Insurance | OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications | If you’re comfortable with computers, then I don’t think any special preparation is required. Else use NCERT’s books on Computer (may be class 10,11,12) or may be Pdf files from www.egyankosh.ac.in for any certificate courses on computer. |
| General Science | NCERT class 7 to 10 (Freely downloaded from official site) (for additional grip) Science portion from Tata Macgrawhill General Studies Manual. |
| Geography | NCERT Class 7 to 10 (Social Science) + Class 11-12 (Geography) should be more than sufficient. And then you may solve the MCQs given in the (for additional grip) GS Manual. |
| Elementary Maths & Statistics | Many people appear for IBPS and SSC have really good grip over aptitude portion. They’ll also appear for Asst. Provident fund. Hence competition becomes really tough. One should be thoroughly prepared for maths and aptitude topic.
The standard reference books for aptitude would be (relevant for any exam starting from Bank Clerk to CAT) However, if you don’t have so much time to go through both of above books, may be you can use IBPS Manual of Disha Expert |
| General Mental Abilities | Same as above. |
There are only two rules to crack this exam
- For Non-aptitude (history, polity etc) Revise – revise – revise
- For aptitude (math,logical reasoning) practice- practice-practice.

Hi Mrunal,

HEY HAS ANYBODY GOT ANSWERKEY FOR SET C OF APFC…PLS GIVE IT AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE..
Q. The older generation is suspicious about the younger generation as the younger generation lack:
(A) knowledge
(B) Experience
(c) Patience
(D) Time
My answer is (B)Experience . Why?–
Read ” with their natural ebullience and impatience , a majority of young people are keen to act on their own rather than be guided by THE EXPERIENCE OF THEIR OLDERS ” thus whether you have patience or not is not a matter , problem is experience . see again ” …they have foreseen nothing but ruination staring the world in it face .” so again the youth is going to ruin the world not because of impatience but because of their lack of experience .What I want to say is that even you have patience but no experience then this is a problem . Thus the actual concern is EXPERIENCE . Your opinion ?
i also given experience…
me too
…..with their “NATURAL” …..and “IMPATIENE”… – implies that youth lack patience…… questions were easy and straightforward……..thinking at UPSC civil services level is not required here, which we many of us tend to do…
answer is – PATIENCE
exactly….
@mishra :right…ebullience & impatience result in acting on their own, which in turn is the cause for suspicion…
experience is correct if you apply common sense

Statement I : In order to produce elctric power from a geothermal reservoir , temperature above 180 C is required .
Statement II : To drive steam turbines , high temperature steam is used .
My answer is (D) Statement I is false but Statement II is true .
Why ?— Now even below 100 C is considerd a very good source .150 or 160C was required 40-50 years ago now technology has improved .
Following question is wrong:
Match List – I with list – II and select the correct answer using the code given below the lists:
List – I List II
A. Jim Yong Kim 1. President, World Bank
B. Kamlesh Sharma 2. Secretary-General, Commonwealth
C. Christine Lagarde 3. Managing Director, IMF
D. Catherine Day 4. Secretary-General of the European Commission
Code:
A B C D
(A) 3 4 2 1
(B) 1 4 2 3
(C) 3 2 4 1
(D) 1 2 4 3
Correct Answers are:
Jim Yong Kim – President, World Bank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Yong_Kim)
Kamlesh Sharma – Secretary-General, Commonwealth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamlesh_Sharma)
Christine Lagarde – Managing Director, IMF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Monetary_Fund or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Lagarde)
Catherine Day – Secretary-General of the European Commission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_Day)
So the correct code should be the following:
A B C D
1 2 3 4
But there is no option with the above code. Thus, question is incorrect.
How to oppose it in UPSC ? Does anyone know the procedure ?

5 question
Factors on which it depends
i) Population: Per capita income of the country of a country depends on its population. More the population, lesser shall be the per capita income. It is because of the fact that the population increases at a faster rate than the national income.
ii)National income: More the national income, greater will be the per capita income provided the population remains constant or increases at a slower rate.
iii) Capital formation: Greater the capital formation, more will be the per capita income. It is because the capital formation increases the rate of economic growth which in turn increases the national income.

Flash steam power plants
Flash steam plants pull deep, high-pressure hot water into lower-pressure tanks and use the resulting flashed steam to drive turbines. They require fluid temperatures of at least 180°C, usually more. This is the most common type of plant in operation today
Do you know what is called LAW in Physics ?
The statement is ” In order to produce electric power from a geothermal reservoir , temperature above 180C is required ” . And you think this statement is valid !! You are only justifying YOUR answer …not stating the correct answer . Here the commission is checking your knowledge of current developments in science and technology .Binary power plants can run on temperature as low as 90c .
Electrical power usually requires water heated above 175 °C (347 °F) to be economical. In geothermal plants using the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), a special type of binary-cycle technology that utilizes lower-temperature heat sources (such as biomass combustion and industrial waste heat), water temperatures as low as 85–90 °C (185–194 °F) may be used.

@ Sunil,
Question no 10 answer is wrong..
reports on states’s accounts are submitted to Governor of respective state, Governor in turn causes these to be places in legislative assemblies.
Thanks
sanjeev
I’ve doubts on few questions please some one clarify on those.
1. the english passage- Optimistic or critical ? experience or impatience ?
2. Statement- 1& Statement – II questions- Directive principles social & economic base——— Ans is a or b
3. Coal reserve- Indian govt policy to save its own coal……. ans is a or b , I’ve chosen B ?
I was thinking of 75 correct answers, but after minute observations my score is 67 after deducting for negative marking and leaving aside the above doubts.
Really ” And yet the world goes on ” is a difficult question . In examination I have ticked (a) but now I doubt it .The problem is that if we read all the lines above this sentence we are reaching option (d) but the line after this sentence– “Every generation…”– points that the answer should be (a).
Answer is optimistic….tone of the author in that sentence is what is asked. The previous sentence is pessimistic (ruination staring the world) . Usage of ‘yet’ after a stmt indicates a contradictory tone hence it is optimistic. Eg: he worked hard yet he failed… He was punctual yet he could nt mark his attendance….. Etc.
answer is c..
@sanjeev,
Thanks for the correction.
so, the Answer of Question no 10 will is..Option B(2 and 3 only).
hi vijay
directive principles, social and economic base…answer is b.As 2nd statement is not the reason.

Did you get selected in apfc 2012 since u got 76 marks?
thanx mrunal sir we are desparately waiting for answers.
set d 93)B
When rbi buys securities,it releases liquidity into the system, hence expansionist.Option a is clearly wrong since selling securities means absorbing liquidity, hence contractionary.d cant be as omo necessarily involves transaction of securities.
ajay u are right cut off wd be 60-65…in worst case it ll go to 65 coz qpaper was easy bt the topics of history, economy, match making is surely confusing..-ve marking is too deciding factor..those who claming 80-85 is simply hyping..this bubble will not sustained.
hi friends , in 2004 exam number of applicants were about 3 lakhs and the persons who did not clear their civil services prelims at that time, prepared for this exam very seriously and moreover there was no negative marking and the posts were only 71. coming to 2012 exam the number of posts were 253 and the number of applicants were not more than 2 lakhs(attendance will be 45-50%) and moreover these posts were notified in the peak time of CSP-12 and hence most of the CSP students were not aware of this exam . Finally the cut off will be around 50-55 for general category by considering all the above factors
Raja, I too believe cut-off wont exceed 60…from where did you get the number of students applied as 2 lakhs…
also there was IB exam on same day having more posts,so i guess many people had opt for IB xam then this xam.
more people went for IB exam than APFC…as the seats were more and the UPSC awe was also there that the paper may be tough and IB paper might be easy…not more than 50-55% attendance…
please dont compare cutt off with CSP cutt off, around 12-15 k applicants clear csp , but here we will have 750 applicants only,, still cutt off cant go more then 70 as questions were from different streams, confusing and silly mistake quetions were there……… i dont know i will get through or not..but i enjoyed the paper, a well balanced paper, covering all syllabus, havin questions of all difficulty levels
