Question from a Visitor
Could you please tell me what should I study for the post of Assistant Commissioner of Employee provident fund I have checked the syllabus but if you could tell me what should I study(I mean reference books etc.).
Readymade books for APFC exam
- Exams like APFC are not taken at regular interval, so whenever such exam comes, some bogus moneyminded publication houses, just copy paste few paragraphs and pages related to the syllabus topics, from other books and publish a Guidebook for APFC exam, containing 300 pages!
- After 1 month, These people will just change the book cover release the same content for Sales Tax inspector’s exam! Therefore such bogus quality readymade books or study material does not serve much purpose.
- Reason: Many candidates also prepare simultaneously for UPSC, State PSC, Banks, SSC and similar jobs therefore competitive level is always very high. You need to have your basic concepts clear and foundations strong. Don’t try to look for shortcuts using such readymade books. (Same Advice for RBI officer, LIC AAO and other similar exams.)
Cost Factor
The General Studies Manual (TMH, Unique, Spectrum) are quite expensive. They’re written for UPSC exam hence very thick and heavy. But the entire manual is not relevant for APFC exam, you’ve to do selective study of only a few topics. So better just borrow it from some friend or try to get an old copy.
Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) comprises the following major topics/ broad areas.
The medium of the test will be both English and Hindi.
Paper 1 General English
The questions in General English component of the test will be designed to evaluate candidate’s understanding of English language and workman-like use of the words.
Please go through the separate article on ( how to prepare English for APFC exam. Click Me)
Paper 2 General Studies
Note: whenever I mention NCERT, know that it is legally downloaded for free, in Hindi or English from the official website of NCERT (http://www.ncert.nic.in/ )
Now talking about specific topics under Assistant Provident Fund manager’s exam.

| Current Events |
|
| Indian Culture Heritage |
|
| Freedom Movements |
Note: Syllabus clearly says “Freedom movement” so read only Post-1857 period, no need to read Ancient (Harappa) or Medival (Mughals). |
| Population | Don’t know, what exactly this means! May be Human Geography class 11/12 book of NCERT could help. |
| Development and Globalization | See if there are some pdf files on www.egyankosh.ac.in (you’ll need to register there to download files, but it is free.) |
| Governance and Constitution of India | The best book ever written: relevant for all exams Indian Polity by M.Laxmikanth (TMH Publication) Thorough revision for 5-7 times. Do all mock questions given at the end of his book. |
| Present Trends in Indian Economy |
You may also use
NOT Recommended Books: Mishra Puri, Dutt Sundaram, Uma Kapila. Because they’re written from academic point of view, we only need some basic and essential concepts from “Exam point of view”. Similarly I donot recommend Pratiyogita Darpan’s “Special” book on Indian Economy for its obsession with numbers and other trivial information. |
| Accountancy and Auditing | Use National Open School (NOS) material: Click MEYou can use NCERT books. I think class 11/12 has these subjects.OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in (may be in BA/MA Economics section) Or if they’re asking deep questions, you may use Unique Publication’s book on “Commerce” optional subject for UPSC. It has elaborate chapters on Audit and Account. |
| Industrial Relations & Labour Laws | Search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Insurance | OR search www.egyankosh.ac.in |
| Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications | If you’re comfortable with computers, then I don’t think any special preparation is required. Else use NCERT’s books on Computer (may be class 10,11,12) or may be Pdf files from www.egyankosh.ac.in for any certificate courses on computer. |
| General Science | NCERT class 7 to 10 (Freely downloaded from official site) (for additional grip) Science portion from Tata Macgrawhill General Studies Manual. |
| Geography | NCERT Class 7 to 10 (Social Science) + Class 11-12 (Geography) should be more than sufficient. And then you may solve the MCQs given in the (for additional grip) GS Manual. |
| Elementary Maths & Statistics | Many people appear for IBPS and SSC have really good grip over aptitude portion. They’ll also appear for Asst. Provident fund. Hence competition becomes really tough. One should be thoroughly prepared for maths and aptitude topic.
The standard reference books for aptitude would be (relevant for any exam starting from Bank Clerk to CAT) However, if you don’t have so much time to go through both of above books, may be you can use IBPS Manual of Disha Expert |
| General Mental Abilities | Same as above. |
There are only two rules to crack this exam
- For Non-aptitude (history, polity etc) Revise – revise – revise
- For aptitude (math,logical reasoning) practice- practice-practice.

Any Idea how many candidates appeared for exams overall. Bangalore had 300 Candidates of which attendence was less than 30 to 40 Percent and what will be cut off marks
300 or 3000…
Its 300 Candidates and it had only 1 center
@song
I had given a representation to UPSC on that question and hopefully it will be taken care of As I directly talked to UPSC representative there. But the catch in my opinion is that one should have left it as marking wrong implies you do not know the answer(I had deliberately left it). rest whatever UPSC take as a decision.
Enough of cut-off talk. Take Mrunal Sir’s advice. Lets talk about when the result will be declared. Any idea Mrunal Sir and guys???
the thing about cotton jowar arhar ques is not that it requires water or not..cotton is grown in semi arid areas also nd nly bt cotton is not used in our country..so from dat aspect 1 2 3 is correct..but the case is they gave there 2 hectares and plantation crop is not advantageous n such small patch of land..nly subsistence farming can be done..so frm dat logic answer is jowar and arhar and nt cotton
i got 57 correct in general category…….
I ATTEMPTED 85 QUESTION AND APPROX 15 QUESTION ARE WRONG..
ATTENDANCE WAS VERY LOW IN MY ROOM 40% ATTENDANCE.
IAM AGREE THAT MATHS WAS EASY BUT IF I WAS EASY FOR ME IT WAS EASY FOR ALL.

Hello
I am working with an Oil PSU and at E3 lavel. annual package is around 14~15 Lacs. If i get the chance of to become AC-EPFO then i should join EPFO. However i like to be in an administrative job. I feel that i should be known as an class one officer.
pl comments
regards
Being in an Oil PSU is much more highly paid than APFC…and apart from that APFC is not the best administrative job to leave your current position….if you want to leave your job leave for at least IAS/IPS etc…
AC – EPFO is not equivalent to ACP… :)
aftermath of joining .u will get 5 lakh annual package .n u will become corrupt to fulfill ur income gap…better be with oil psu and save ur status as it or opt for cse 2013.

JIM KING -WORLD BANK
KAMLESH SHARNA-COMMONWEALTH
LAGARDE-IMF
DAY CATHERINE-EUROPIAN COMMISION
WRONG 1243 OPTION GIVEN.CORRECT OPTION SHUD BE 1234 ..
IT HAPPENS …UPSC HAS TO CONDUCT SO MANY EXAMS ….
i do agree with u.
UPSC should certainly think about these errors and how much this affects examinees…..
yeh i was damn sure that IMF chief is christian lagarde…and it is not matching the answers…this is a huge blunder from upsc…… cannot believe this……
except this one the questions were better……
i think cut off will be 60-65 considering 253 vscancies, level of exam & negative marking….cut off in 2004 was 71 marks for general without negative marking& vacancies was also minimum….so at this time we think about 5 -10 marks lesser.
i think maximum bustle is for 3-4 days after exam and hardly anyone would be interested in the thread after 2 weeks because by that time most of the 75 – 80 candidates would have fallen below 45,so 50-60% is never a joke in upsc paper with negative marking and whining over result and filing rti isnt going to help then, do an honest analysis and i think 60 odd is more than sufficient in general category
I totally agree with you…its like a bubble, once answer keys are out lets see how many exceed 60% marks…
i too agree. i dont understand why students are unnecessarily inflating scores(off course on their presumption) and creating fear among others. plz hold on till an authentic key is released and then give your scores. plz dont psychologically dissuade many from the actual race……..
I think 65 marks can sure the general categoy to qualify. As the level of exam was easy but you can’t ignore that polity, economics and histroy question was confusing.we are finding more than one answer is correct.let us hop for 65.
u r spot on man….this field is full of braggers who normally disappear after results are out….
agree with u,i think due to negative marking the overall attempt would be arond 85 with minimum 15 wrong,it makes the score to fall around 65 for general..so,people should stop scaremongering….
u r right in negative marking exam how people r saying they r gng to score 80 marks.
