- Appendix:Topicwise Breakup of RBI 2011 Paper.
Reserve bank of India 2011
RBI Grade “B” officer’s exam, follows the same “structure” of UPSC Civil service exam.
This RBI exam has three phases
- Phase I (Objective Type Test)= Preliminary stage (Multi choice questions)
- Phase II Descriptive Exam (we already discussed this in old article, CLICK ME)
- Phase III Interview.
I’m extremely grateful to my trusted friend from pagalguy forum “csl80”, for providing me the paper of 2011’s exam and all other background information on this exam.
This whole strategy / studyplan is based on that.
RBI Grade B Officer Preliminary exam: structure
- No of questions= 200
- Sectional Passing marks = yes. (just like bank exam. It means Candidates have to secure minimum marks separately for each section.)
- Negative marking = yes (minus 1/4th of the marks allotted to a question)
According to RBI’s pattern in 2011’s exam, here is the breakup
| Topic | No. of Qs | Marks | Time |
| General Awareness | 80 | 80 | 45mins |
| Math | 30 | 30 | 20mins |
| English | 30 | 30 | 20mins |
| Reasoning | 60 | 60 | 45mins |
| Total | 200 | 200 |
UPDATE (August-05-2013): As per the RBI Handout for 2013’s Prelim: there is sectional cutoff but no sectional timing. They’ll give 200 questions to you at once, and you can solve them in any order within 130 minutes

Section #1: General Awareness (GA)
Let us look at the topic wise breakup of General Awareness, in 2011’s RBI preliminary exam.

| Topic | No. of Questions in 2011’s Exam |
| Economy | 56 |
| Yearbook | 13 |
| Diplomacy | 7 |
| Geography | 3 |
| Science | 1 |
| Total | 80 |
You can find the actual questions in the appendix below. Even 2010’s exam had more or less the same breakup: heavy emphasis on Economy and Yearbook type of questions. So now let us see how to approach each of above topics.
How to prepare Economy for RBI exam?
As you look in the last paper, you’ll see some questions are based on “static (theory) portion and rest are based on “dynamic (current affairs). I’ve given the reading list accordingly.
There are mainly 5 type of questions that can be asked in economy related MCQs.
- You’re given a term and four definitions. You’ve to find the correct definition. (or vice versa)
- You’re given a 4-5 organizations and their functions, and you’ve to “match the following”.
- Name of some person and which organization he’s related with. (or vice versa)
- Name of some Government policy/ Act is given, and some statements are given. You’ve to find the correct statements associated with that policy/act.
- Trivial: “Absolute dates and numbers”. For example How much money did Government allot in xyz fund sector? Or what was the repo rate in xyz month? or In which year NABARD was established?
Problem:
- Students devote all their energy in mastering 5th type of questions. But you’ve to bow down to the fact that there can be no end to trivial question. What if you prepared NABARD’s establishment year but they asked about LIC’s year? So the Cost:Benefit ratio is not good.
- Therefore Donot get obsessed with trival facts. Because no war is won without sacrificing a few soldiers. And Nobody expects you to score 100/100 marks – whether it is UPSC, RBI or CAT.
Now here is the reading list/ suggested books.
How to prepare Static Economy (theory)?
- NCERT economics: can be downloaded for free by clicking me
- NIOS (National Open School) study material for Economy (can be downloaded for free by clicking ME
- Indian Economy by Ramesh Singh (TMH Publication)
- For practice-Mock questions given at the end of General studies (GS) manual.
^this is more than sufficient.

- Don’t try to get in minute details (for example many topics in NCERT Class 12 Micro economic.)
- As I keep saying, no point in wasting time in Mishra Puri, Dutt Sundaram, Uma Kapila etc. books they’re written from academic point of view = not very helpful in competitive exam, time is luxery we don’t have.
Once this is done, use the General Studies manual, and solve all the mock questions given at the end of its Economy chapter.
- If you have one, then well and good.
- If you don’t have one, then borrow from some friend or visit Government library. There is absoutely no need to specially buy a GS manual for RBI exam.
How to prepare Dynamic Economy (Current Affairs)?
Prepare highlights of budget 2013 + Economic Survey (lot of content already covered in Mrunal.org/economy
Any one magazine
- I assume you’re in the ‘competition business’ since many months. So you’d have a good collection of current affairs magazines @home. Whether it is CST or Pratiyogita Darpan, Chronicle or Wizard doesn’t matter. Just go through its monthly Economy portion.
- Following are the Priority areas in a magazine in descending order of their importance.
- Economy
- International
- National
- Science tech
- Persons in News
- If you don’t have magazine, no worries, go to Government library of your city, all of these magazines will be available. You don’t have to read all of them, just pick any one and go through it.
- You can also visit Competitionmaster.com (he gives monthly current affairs)
- You can also read Pratiyogita Darpan online for free: http://pdeng.pdgroup.in/Index.aspx
- Question: which magazine to refer? If your sole aim is IAS exam then go for Civil Services Times.
- But if you’re simultaneously preparing for IAS+State PSC+Bank/RBI/SSC type of exams= go for Pratiyogita Darpan. Because he also provides papers for those exams.
Any one newspaper: The Hindu or Indian Express
How to read newspaper = already explained in following article
https://mrunal.org/2012/06/current-affairs-ias.html
You must remember that if you qualify in preliminary exam, you’ll have to face the descriptive papers (phase II). And hence, newspaper reading = essential.
And finally the main villain: Mrunal.com/economy
How to prepare Yearbook
- As you saw in the table, 13 questions came from Yearbook.
- By the word “Yearbook”, I mean Government schemes, social Development etc. (boring) stuff.
- There is again no need to buy the book specifically for RBI exam because, I’ve already covered most of the important stuff related to Government schemes, projects etc from the India yearbook in my summary artiles on Economic Survey (freely available on Mrunal.org/economy).
- Please keep in mind “yearbook” doesn’t mean only the stuff given in that book. They can ask something from those topics, from current affairs. So do read the newspapers, do go through the current affairs magazine.
How to prepare International Affairs
- Any one magazine AND OR Competitionmaster.com
- Any one newspaper: The Hindu or Indian Express
- mrunal.org/diplomacy
How to prepare everything else!
- I mean to say the “miscellaneous topics” for RBI exam (seeing last two years’ papers): history, polity, geography, science = these are all non-important miscellaneous topics.
- But still it’d be mistake to go completely blank on other topics. What if some really easy 3-4 questions come?
- Therefore I suggest you go through Lucent’s General Knowledge book.
With this I conclude how to prepare the General Awareness (GA) portion of RBI Grade “B” officers’ exam.
Now let us move to the aptitude part.
Aptitude
(I put Maths, logical reasoning and English – all three into aptitude)
Section #2: Quantitative Aptitude (QA)
The maths is more oriented towards data interpretation rather than conventional profit-loss type stuff. Go through the old papers (posted at bottom), and prepare topics accordingly. And to clear the basic concepts of maths, you may use the approach shown in the RBI Assistant exam article click me
- Many articles on mrunal.org/aptitude
- Practice old Bank PO question papers (can be googled).
- ignore trigonometry, geometry (other than area volume perimeter), coordinate geometry and logerithms.
Priority areas in Quantitative aptitude (QA)
- Operation on brackets
- Linear equations
- Average + alligiation
- Ratios
- Profit, Loss, %, SI and CI : all can be solved if you’ve clear concept of % calculation.
- Arithmetic and Geography progression.
- TSDW (Time speed distance and Work): all can be solved using the “STD” table, if you go through my old articles on Mrunal.org/aptitude
- Permutation, Combination, Probability : all can be solved without problem, if you go through my old articles.
- Geometry: Area and Volume
- Venn Diagrams
Non priority areas in QA
- Geometry: things other than Area, Volume, Perimeter
- Coordinate Geometry
- Logerithms
- Trigonometry
- Functions and graphs.
^these topics are important for SSC exam but not much for RBI
Data Interpretation (DI)
In this QA (maths) portion, they also asked Data interpretation (DI) questions worth 15 marks, in 2011. There is hardly any theory in DI, all you’ve to do is –practice. Speed (quick calculation) is extremely important here, otherwise you might end up wasting 20+ minutes in doing barely 5 sums of DI.
Basically DI requires speed in Addition and % calculation and lot of practice from old Bank/IBPS papers.
How to get speed for maths calculations?
- Understand this two-digit long division technique explained here click me
- Understand the Trachtenberg’s method for multiplication, especially for 5,9 and 11. plenty of articles on google, start with this one: click me
- Then practice maximum questions from previous years’ IBPS/Bank papers.
(There is no harm in learning Vedic maths techniques either but I find Trachtenberg’s speed maths more user-friendly and convenient than Vedic maths.)
Section #3: English Grammar and Comprehension

30 questions came from English portion in RBI 2011 exam.
Priority Areas of English Section
Reading comprehension
There are no secret tricks. Just one word: Practice.
Now where to find practice? Plenty of resources, if only you look for them
- Pagalguy forum has dedicated threads for it.
- Just google “GMAT reading comprehension” or CAT reading comprehension you’ll come across plenty of sites providing mock questions.
- You can also use previous years’ papers of UPSC, IBPS, Bank PO to practice.
Sentence arrangement/ Correction, Fill in the blanks etc.
- I feel the best way to master it = Pagalguy forum’s CAT thread for it.
- For grammar book, If you already have grammar book (R.S.Agarwal, A.P.Bhardwaj) etc. use it. If you don’t have any book, I suggest you go for objective general English by SP Bakshi (Arihant Publication).
Vocabulary
- will helps indirectly in the fill in the blanks + comprehension.
- In short, overall approach would be more or less the same as given in earlier “How to prepare English for APFC” article Click ME
Section #4: Logical Reasoning

If you donot practice enough at home, the Logical reasoning questions can be “Sitters” (i.e. you waste lot of time trying to figure out blood relation and sitting arrangement etc)
How to approach LR?
- Solve the sums given in this book: Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning by Dr. R S Aggarwal
- Problem: the book has about 600 pages and you don’t have that much time.
- Well atleast do 10-10 questions from each variety. + ignore the “non-verbal” portion because it is not that important for RBI (although important for IBPS).
Priority areas for Logical reasoning
Following topics are important, because usually atleast 4 questions come from each of these.
- Blood relations. (generally a “case/parapgrah” followed by 5 questions)
- Sitting Arrangement . (generally a “case/parapgrah” followed by 5 questions)
- Coding –decoding
- Input output
- Inequality (x>y and y<z …)
- Data sufficiency
- Number series- find the next number.
- Assumption and inferences
- All cats are dogs. Syllogism (technique also explained in Mrunal.org/aptitude)
To sum up
- For General awareness: Revision important.
- Priority areas = Economy + Yearbook
- For aptitude: Practice important.
- Priority areas (already given above)

Mrunal Sir please tell the strategy for Phase II exam….My writing skill is very poor.
rahul dose RBI b grade exams happens every year ……….in 2014 rbi will conduct b grade exam or not…..if u know please tell me ……also any coaching if you know…that would be a great help
Hi All, I had exam on 24th Morning, GA was tougher than I expected, Quant was comparatively easy, with moderate reasoning and easy English. Can somebody tell me if RBI gives different weightage to different sections or it considers all section as equal. Also I would like to know whether the final cutoff score for phase I will be based on No. of questions correctly updated minus the penalty for incorrect questions or it will be based on the Weightage for each section.
I jst attempted 14 q is QA.. Will dat b enuf???? GA was kindof tuf…. I attempted 47, Reasoning was fyn medium level 41, English Ec pc :) 30.
hi mrunal,
Any guesses on cut off of RBI grade B exam?
Ashwin
I gave my exam today…GA was totally surprising..it was difficult…I attempted 142 in total..hoping a score between 110-120..have to see how much they will set as the cut-off..it was difficult dan previous year…hoping a lower cut-off dan previous year..how did u ppl feel regarding your exam?
derailed by highly unbalanced GA….
English- easy, Q+Reas- moderate
I attempted 154 (GA 60, eng 30, quant 25, reasoning 39). hope cut off will not be high (that i expected)!
two questions were same in syllogism
GA section was not unbalanced but though it is little bit unpredictable
Questions from current Affairs are simple
But as far as economy are considered most of the question on basic banking and economics but the options are confusing….i am expecting same kind of pattern in SEBI as well as IBPS PO
why i call it unbalanced- as it contains questions like nifty belong to which country and tough questions relating FII.
So NIFTY is a part of Economics….and we are in open Economy..means anything happens in any part of world in Market or Economics..it affects too…and tough questions were expected cz this is RBI Question paper….Now keep in mind this paper..prepare for SEBI..it really helps
i dont understand!!
Result should be out in 10/15 days!
Syllogism… had same Data for 2 Q… but d q asked was diff … so answer is also diffrnt.
mrunal sir,
pls need guidance for SEBI 2013…
Help! Help ! Help!
dint apply for sebi, will apply 2morow. we can start talking about this exam in this thread..
friends please contribute whatever you know abt sebi exam…
have googled for last SEBI xam held in 2010.. but as such no clue regarding syllabus, GA, paper pattern etc. etc.
We dont have enough tym too to file an RTI n Get the question paper…..we have to start a forum regarding SEBI Question Paper format n need to discuss the topic
Thank u Mr. Mrunal for the valuable reading material. your advices and insights were wonderful. u r doing a great job. God bless you
Can an undergraduate apply for the SEBI Exam?
no…only postgraduate
Dear Mrunal Sir , Please tell me is the minimum cut off refers to call for second phase i.e descriptive part as I have taken RBI, Grade B exam all the sections went good but in maths I attempted few questions and as per my calculations minimum i will score 10 out of 30 , last year minimum cut off in maths was 4 out of 30 , Is there any chance of mine qualifying for mains i.e descriptive . Kindly share
Thanks Mrunal for your help.
Got up early and for two hours just read the economy related articles on your site. Helped me in at least 5-10 questions. I felt GA was not tough at least for people who have a decent idea about the economy
LR was of decent standard, English was comparatively easier, and Quant was all about calculations
My guess at the cutoff would be around 140
Cut off 140 !!!! kya paaji bache ki jaan loge kya….kuch bhi bolte ho yaar
140 cut off :P
people are attempting around 130 to 155 and you think cutoff will be 140!
There is something called negative marking … and final selection does not take into account marks in phase 1 .
with around 20 more seats than last time , they will need even more people to qualify.
I think there will not be much difference from last time’s cutoff .
I think for Gen , it will be around 110 and around 90 to 95 for others …
Ya Mr. Adi is right…the paper was less tougher than the paper of 2011. but cuttoff may go higher this time than the previous year paper..
attempted 121 questions.any chances to clear?@saurav what is normalisation.
difficulty level of all the slots are not same .. so to level all slots to the near equal state – some bonus marks are given to tougher slots..extra marks given for accuracy also. eg. a student solves 140 questions with 80% accuracy.. another one solves 100 with 100% accuracy– the latter will score more than the former. actually for normalization some time needed (say 1 month) as its a complex process.. but as RBI will declare result in 10/15 days (!) there is a very less chance for normalization.
Guys need one clarification that the number u r indicating against each subject is the total number of questions that u have attempted or expected marks and my expected cut off
would be around 120
When result will be declared.
mrunal sir…..
this page is awwsom.. briefly speaking..
narrow our all efforts in ryt direction
..no matter wht wud b result of my attempt,,bt i thot this page is a subjet fr appriciation anyway..
what the hell……………
RBI full of surprise no question from economic GS only current issue, hell…………..
i think question papers were not set by RBI. it might be by ibps who are inclined towards normal po test- thereby removing conceptual questions and adding more current and number based questions (mostly banking)- which , most of us dint follow as we gave more importance to concept books. hope cut off will be on lower side.
moreover many really tough banking questions were there which cant be found in any normal book (pd, sriram, ncert)- these are questions for bank staffs who have to read these during training- shows us that rbi needs people from banking background (they are giving preferences to bank staffs in all stages starting from prelims to interview).
Thanks Mrunal for the articles, paper & everything about RBI examination. It helped a lot.
-Paper was more or lesss same as previous year papers.
-GA part revolved around Economy as expected. Some Question were on the pattern of those asked in last year e.g. Credit Rating Agency based in India, Acronyms etc
-English was easy & 18-20 minutes were sufficient for it.
-Quant was easy too & 20-22 minutes were good for it.
-Reasoning had good questions on LR.. i spared 55-60 mins on it though.
Now that the RBI exam is over, its obvious ambience of speculation regarding the cut offs will be there. Next staring at the face is SEBI. Friends, let us plan to discuss the composition of the Paper. Considering RBI exam, SEBI exam will be more or less on the same lines. The only difference can be GA pertaining to Capital and Money Market. But then, this is just a point of speculation…

Dear Mrunal
pls guide me to RBI. Group B second phase
hey is there any requirement of experience in sebi vaccancy…I mean if they are going to decide on exp basis thn there wud be many who will be out of competition, who do nt posses required exp..
brother its not that freshers cannot apply, they are saying that “experience in the related field will be considered”.
But I am not sure about how can one gain such experience without working with SEBI.
Hi Mrunal
SEBI 2013 ??? no previous years papers,no idea on imp areas (esp GENERAL AWARENESS)
ITS LIKE GOING TO WAR WITH WEAPONS WITHOUT KNOWING THE TECHNIQUES OF WAR…
hope your experience can guess focus areas and give basic information
thank you

@Adi
my dear friend Adi i don’t know how and in what sense u have expected the cut off would be 140 and others also who have made their cut off about rbi grade b. well my friend 140 out of 200 that means exactly 70% mark in this paper, don’t u think its ridiculous.
Rbi is just like upsc level type exam where they ask u about the concept and everyone knows that in upsc who hav done near about 50% has got selection. same is, here in rbi. so guys don’t get panic just believe in urself and what u hav done in ur exam.
and about cutoff it is near about 95 to 115
Dear All
You must have heard about a burnt child dreads fire. Let me tell you to those of you who think that cut off will be 50% of the total. I resigned from a Maharatna PSU to prepare for civil and appeared in CSAT 2013. I was expecting 220 out of 400 ( after all deductions from various sites’ keys ) I was pretty sure about clearing for mains as last year i.e for CSAT 2012 the cut off was 209. But I couldn’t clear CSAT 2013 this time as cutoff rose to somewhere near 238. I found it from friends like those who where getting 240 cleared and those claiming 235 didn’t. So take this out from your mind that people wouldn’t have scored much and cut off will be around 50%. Each year people are getting smarter and working harder to raise the cutoff higher. The competition is really getting hotter. I repent for resigning from my job ( I was an executive there with a package of 11LPA). In RBI I have attempted 140 with maximum accuracy but can’t say what will happen. :(:(
rightly said mate..
I have a similar story bro…my confidence hit rock bottom after not clearing d prelims. I was about to resign from my maha-psu job but changed d decision in d last minute. Btw where did U work?
dude I was working with BHEL. where r u working?
In UPSC who have done 50% in “MAINS” got selection and not in prelims atleast in 2013 ..and please please dont say that upsc 2013 cut off is still not out so we cant talk abt this- its almost sure that upsc cutoff was 235+.
Regarding RBI it should not be as low as 95 and as high as 140. this year we got min 15 minutes extra + we dint need to colour the circles–> more attempt. GS was unpredictable (less/0 conceptual questions)–> less attempt. anyway we wont find much time for debate on cut off as result will be out in 10/15 days (asst result was out in 12/15 days)
your conversation is quite meaningful, I just want to say that the cut off last year was 114, and in my opinion I think 140 would be a high figure because RBI has to select at least 1850 candidates from prelimns this year last time this figure was 1434, the cutoff for GEN maximum should be around 122 +- 3.
cut off last year was not 114 but 104 for general….rest u can speculate regarding cutoff
there were 2 exams in 2011. feb/2011 cut off was 104.
dec/2011 cut off not known
1 person in this thread said that it was 114 but still not confirmed.
prajwal, brother I have seen on this website that cutoff for 2010 was 104 and seen somewhere that for 2011 it was 114, and I am still confused with it
One of my friend from OBC category was selected in prelim and he was expecting 92 marks in RBI grade B exam held on 18/12/2011
Fact : last time RBI had shortlisted 1434 candidates for rbi grade B 2011 dec exam.(i verified this fig myself)
Inference: (since) For 78 posts 1434 candidates qualified in ph I
(hence) For 98 posts 1800 candidates should be shortlisted
Assumption : cutoff should be xyz/200
people please don’t assume…its a matter of 10-15 days…Let RBI only decide the cutoff..
add one more aspect here is.. no sectional timings.. thats the main reason why people have attempted more no. of questions.. and are therefore speculating high cut offs.
First time online exam was conducted, there are many good students who are not at all comfortable with online exam. Reduced speed and increased time in reading passage and other LR questions will compensate for time reduced after removal of sectional timing and time saved after removal of circle filling. Also keep this is mind that number of post in Feb 2011(80) has been increased to 98 this time.
Also when there was sectional timing the time allotted for LR was 45 minutes which was enough and many have consumed the same time this year also. There would have been slight increase of 4-6 minutes each during this year in both Quant and Eng which in turn would have increased the number of questions attempted by hardly 5 -6 questions (not more).
So do not worry cutoff will be in the range of 100-110 only. DO remember cutoff in many exams like CAT , NMAT was low when these were conducted online for the first time. Things would be clear in 15-20 days. All the best for Mains.
can anyone please explain me that
this is the first time RBI has gone for online test, in 2011 also it was offline, so how can there be sectional cut offs in 2010 or 2011….?
Yes this was the first time for online exam. Earlier it was paper pencil based and separate bell system was there to notify the time for each section and you are not allowed to switch the section once the time is over
while speculating on the cutoff, please consider the fact that in all the previous rbi grade b exams time allowed was 180 mins and not 130 minutes. I m confused whether it would impact the cutoffs in any way?
Nahi yaar..130 min hi tha
@Aim High and others who still believe that in 2011 RBI exam was of 130 min instead of 180 min, I want to share the 2011 advertisement with them. And I appeared in 2011 too (didn’t make it though :p). I have uploaded the 2011 RBI advertisement here on this link : http://www1.datafilehost.com/d/381d45a2 (File size = 5.83 Mb). , please see yourself.
Whether in 2011 cut off was 114 or not, that I don’t know.

You can have a look at RBI 2011 Notification on above link.
Obviously, cut offs would be down across all categories.
