UPSC has uploaded the halltickets for CSAT-2014. No change in exam date. It’s same 24th august 2014, Sunday. No change in exam structure- same two papers. No change in negative marking, same 33%.

- I recommend you bring clipboard. Reason: Sarkaari colleges and highschools have benches have rough surface and holes. It’ll “injure” your OMR sheet while you’re marking answer in black pen.
- if you’ve applied twice, then Use HIGHER REGISTRATION number while downloading the hallticket.
- If your hallticket doesn’t have clear photo/signature, you will have to bring a photo identity proof viz. Adhar Card, Driving License, Passport, Voter I Card etc. and two passport size photographs one for each paper with an undertaking.
- Save your own hallticket PDF file in google drive. So there is no fear of misplacing/forgetting roll number.

Maam, please don’t make it rural vs urban. In 2010, 29.3% of those at LBSNAA were from rural background. In 2012, it was 27.13 %. Not a huge drop. And also, one thing is to be noted that urban space of the country has grown and formerly rural areas have been becoming urban areas. Also, migration from rural to urban areas has been rapid in last decade. To say rural students are discriminated against is a fallacy. read my below post to know why engineers are increasingly being selected in UPSC.

Just because Govt. schools are in bad shape you can’t argue to lower the standard at competition. And I know many many of my friends from Hindi medium who have cracked JEE and studied at reputed engineering colleges. I even know many students from Rajasthan who have studied in Hindi even at colleges to overcome the Highly technical exams like JEE. If you look at protest its mostly UP and Bihar students. I belong to the region and many of my friends are amazed by the protests against and in the name of english and Rural and Govt. school. I am arguing on the basis of deduction of facts.

For you kind information you don’t have to tell any one, what one needs to do.. who really want to work abroad, they are already there or are trying and performing very well and btw they are not just engineers or any degree holders which boasts of their analytical skills. Did you mean to say ppl with higher anlytical skills don’t deserve to apply their skills for serving their own motherland!! This shows nothing else but your frustration and unable to compete… “Jalo mat barabri karo”. I am no engineer or genius myself but I am not jealous of any one and i am working on my weak parts too.
Analytical/reasoning skills measure ur ability to tackle difficult situation and not rutta maarke exam me chaapna. It also reflects who is capable of handling such situation calmly and who can bring out frustration and anger. The world over is moving ahead with such tests and you want India to go backwards. Even various boards in India are experimenting with thier ways of testing a child’s abilities. CBSE is also introducing open book exams for school ( that doesn’t mean there will be straight forwards questions).
The “turf” – does it really matters?? Final selection is not on the basis of subjects that one choose, there is no quota of filling the vacancies subject wise. So how does it matters who is taking what optional?? Any body can choose a subject ,what he thinks is scoring or easier for him to get through. There are engineering subjects too which any engineer/arts/non engineering student can take up for the exam.
Those who are demanding postponing CSAT to Oct, I would say already so much time is wasted, you really want to waste more time. Already UPSC is so time consuming and delaying it any further would be great lose to senior candidates. And those who went for protest, I think most of them wouldn’t have anyways cleared it; their last minute protest shows that they were not prepared and waiting for some miracle now by means of protest. If they were really so concerned were they sleeping till now?? What about others who have really put in hard efforts and planned esp.. those who work,.. they cannot keep changing their schedules every now n then.. asking for change in their planned leaves.
I personally don’t want any further delays, hope UPSC makes it a bit easier to Hindi medium guys , can even take off the comprehension part entirely, but I don’t know how is that going to solve any problem. tomorrow they will ask for removal of compulsory English paper as well. This is not how it works. UPSC needs to take care of min. requirements of knowing basic English at least..

Well said! UPSC GS Questions are not factual but conceptual in nature. So it’s not about mugging up, as is projected by some technical background guys. And evn if it requires some rote learning, isn’t gud memory also a sign of a sharp brain and a trait desirable in gud administrators.

To say that 10th level comprehension and aptitude skills favor engineering students is laughable.
engineering students have in anyways performing better than humanities before CSAT introduction. Their rise afterwards pertains to the fact that more engineering students have opted for CSE preparations as also their nos. in the country rose with more seats at engineering and more no. of colleges.
CSAT is non-discriminatory against Hindi medium as hindi translations are provided. If they can’t comprehend in Hindi, its their problem.

I agree that Hindi passages are tougher than the english passages. It is easier to do them in English than in Hindi, if one is proficient in both. but, have you looked at the reason for such toughness. Even I am very proficient in both english and Hindi, have read many mythological books in pure form in hindi. The problem is UPSC does what is required to do. Its not at fault. because, hindi used is tougher, purer form, the snaskritized form, which many of us are not proficient with. Its not common spoken hindi. In any case, the official language is Hindi in devnagiri, which pertains to its sanskritized form not spoken form. UPSC is right by way of that.
Check for any translation, it is done sentence wise. To argue that it changes essence of passage might be correct to some extent, but not wholly. Plus, google transate is not used. I believe UPSC uses some highly qualified Hindi teachers or translators. And its a fact that Hindi literature is tougher than English literature in its purer form which many of us don’t know.
But, since students are facing difficulty, then yes the Hindi translations may be made a bit flexible. that is it. But, again will the students demand what they should be asked for?
Do you think UPSC doesn’t know what it does? If a guy like me can discern and argue on behalf of UPSC correctness, they can have much more points to argue. Any decision can’t be taken arbitrarily, but after thorough analysis. And there are arguments to defend UPSC.
I still believe that if one practices the Hindi passages in their purer form, the difficulty could be overcome. Even those like I and you just don’t go there and do passages, we have practiced so we qualify.

And such small mistakes may have been at Mains paper also. I wrote pol sci and last year one ques was having diff meaning in Hindi and Eng. I wrote answers for both rather than to criticize whole paper. and please let me know if there is steel plant is lohe ka paudha. Will be glad to find it out and laugh at UPSC. really.

So, the basis of protest is just a few translation errors. Many of which are unverified. That prompts arson and violence. Good. UPSC should introduce error free translation in any case. But, for this reason only to scrap CSAT?? no way. Even the most basic of the demands of the violent protestors is only translation error which are few and far between in a paper which carries 200 marks. Will any sane UPSC or Govt. official listen to the scle of protest over such a minor issue.

Thanks for reminding to study. Its not in our hands to do the 4 marks or 2.5 marks. In any case before CSAT weightage of GS was half at 150 marks compared to optional with 300 marks. Now its even with aptitude. May be if there is a need to change marking, they should use differentiated marking like reducing the marks allotted to English only comprehension etc. In any case that should not be ours thinking. Its not in our domain, and we are NOT QUALIFIED for that.
And yes, in case we have to study, CSAT or not, there is GS at mains. So, me too back to study.

Even I wrote GS papers. In my pol sci paper, a ques was having entirely diff meaning in hindi and its english version. what did I do? protest? No, i simply underlined the part of fallacy in both and wrote BOTH answers.

If the demand is for level playing field, then according to me demands should be as follows-1. Translation of question paper(GS 1 and GS 2) should not be not only in Hindi but also in all other regional languages. 2. Removal of compulsory English paper from mains exam, as it does injustice to non english speaking section.3. Interview should be conducted in all the regional languages and not in English only. 4. Removal of all analytical ability, logical reasoning, data interpretation, decision making and mathematics questions, as they provide advantage to science background students. But saying CSAT gives advantage to Science students is one sided as if it is why not remove the the History, Polity, Sociology, Ethics, Arts and Culture and so on from the examination as it does grave injustice to the students of nonsocial science background. My intention is not to disparage someone or ask something for my advantage. But, somewhere a line has to be drawn, but who will draw the line?

Gov is fooling everyone both proCSAT and antiCSAT….
First of all, we should think whether the aptitude tests in current format really test the so called “skills” like aptitude, logical reasoning and analytical ability of the student. Aptitude tests were created with fond dreams. But now it has been reduced to a set of questions which can be answered by continuous practice of set of questions. Type of questions (train problem, age problem, speed/velocity problem, linear equation problem etc.) asked in a particular exam can be easily predicted by analysing previous year question papers. If a person practices on solving them, he will clear the exam. Myriads of coaching institutions and HR authors have written numerous books on “How to solve the questions easily”. Ability to apply tricks, formulas and shortcuts are only tested, not the aptitude. CSAT in current format is not the scientific way of testing the aptitude skills. Questions are of predictable pattern and directly taken from other books with only certain data changed.
If aptitude tests were so foolproof and really helped in picking up the right candidates, then the myriad of civil servants, doctors, engineers, scientists and armed force officers, who were selected to the aptitude tests of same pattern, would have made this country glorious long time ago. By this time we would have beaten USA, China and Japan.

I couldnt clear cut off.this time i devoteed more time for csat practice.and now i am ok with csat.but uncertainity in pattern creating lots of tension.not even feeling to study anything.even dnt know how to plan study for prelims.guy do i start my focus on gs if scraping or weightage in csat lower?

Initially the govt. was sympathetic to the problem of protesting students and asked UPSC to postpone the exam. The Arvind Varma Committee (AVC) was also requested to expedite its work but being a court appointed committee, it couldn’t be forced.
UPSC, unanimously is opposed to the demands of agitators. The biggest issue they have raised is their inability to delay mains (which will delay training – not enough flexibility in schedules).
Apparently, govt. stance has changed recently after concerned politicians were shown that the hindi translations are in fact, correct and only English passages, of extremely basic level. On declining number of hindi candidates, it has been pointed out that the trend is a long term one going back to pre-CSAT era. With protesters resorting to violence, the govt is not too happy with them. The current date is very much likely to stand. If some people are awarded extra attempts, there might be a special window of a week or so for them to fill their forms. Very little chances of any postponement. Govt. unlikely to make any statement before the report comes out.

At least, UPSC is aware of the false claims of incorrect translation. Whatever happens, some people seem to be aware of the facts. That is good.
My wife is from hindi medium(BA) + rural background. She gave exam last year and I was expecting her to score > 80% in comprehension and 50% in maths/reasoning given her background. But, to my surprise when results came, she got > 80% in maths/reasoning and around 50% in C. It was the bad translation of Eng to Hindi that let her down. So real issue is translation of C from ENg to HIndi. Translation of C will never work. Hindi student needs to be provided with separate Hindi C and not Eng one translated. When you translate Sanskrit to Eng(which morons like Max Mueller did), the whole meaning is lost.. So, real change required is : Provide Hindi students Hindi C and not translated ones. maths/reasoning of CSAT level can be improved by hard work and removing it is a very bad idea..

Wife gets x/2 , brothers get (in total) get x/2.
So each brother (B,C and D) gets x/6, x/6, x/6..
B dies keeps half of his maal for his wife i.e. = x/12
C & D in total get the remaining x/12, divided equally amongst them. Therefore each one gets x/24.
Now total amount with C & D each = x/6 + x/24 = 5x/24
C dies and repeats the above process. Leaves half for wife and half for D.
So D gets 5x/48
So total property with D = 5x/24 + 5x/48 = 15x/48
D dies and leaves half for his mom i.e. = 15x/96.
So now mom has total x/2 +15x/96 = 1575000. Solve for x
