UPSC had conducted Civil service and Forest service (combined) preliminary exam aka CSAT-2014, on 24th August 2014. Here are the scanned copies of Booklet no.”C” for both papers:
In above PDF files, the text is searchable and copy-able, so you can cut-paste-search it anywhere for discussion, google-ing. For example, if you want to find out which passage was lifted from which newspaper/googlebook?

- Detailed Analysis and Topicwise Answerkeys with explanations (for all sets), coming soon.
- You’re most welcome to provide your inputs, answers, observation, analysis and experience in the comments below.
- If you want to discuss then discuss MCQs, (and not cut-offs.) Everyone who had prepared sincerely, and did not risk too much negative marking, he/she has a fair chance of clearing prelims.
- Internet user sample size too short to make any predictions. So don’t lose blood pressure, if Mr.X, Y or Z says he ticked more MCQs than you.

all the very best !
Only 75 in P1 and 140 in P2…..looks like game over for me, this time. Thanks to Mrunal though for his efforts. Brilliant articles. But must say that following any strategy for UPSC is a big mistake. Always expect the unexpected. Time for some attitude adjustment. Time to get the basics right.
Paper 1 more favorable to #New players.
(They focus more on NCERTS…).#BackBreaking for those seniors who with passage of time stop believing NCERTS ……!!!
पेपर आम था और हर आम आदमी सभी विषयों की आम जानकारी रखने वालों के लिए था
कोई रहस्यमयी प्रश्न नहीं था/
Exactly (Y)
Thank you Mrunal Sir.
Lots of thanks.
As per analysis I followed NCERT most of the time and prepare topics over internet, got the good collection of knowledge. I had taken risk to rely on internet but succeeded. Yesterday, i understand why the Internet is called “Inter” (Inter linking of various site)- “Net” (Network of Knowledge). I skip bookish knowledge over preparation as per your article.
Don’t know what will be the cut-off, but m sure my roll number will be in there.
Thanks alot for your kind advice and help over here.
Thank you Mrunal Sir.
Mrunal thanks a lot, I don’t know if question came from this forum or not, but to eliminate options and arriving at answer, blog helped a lot.
Paper 1 seemed tough to me than last year. Getting around 85 in it. And 116 in paper 2. Are there chances of me clearing from general category.
What will be the expected cut off this year?
Will it be similar like 2011?
Confusion on the press note on amendment of scheme of CS Preliminary 2014-
I’ve a doubt regarding the press note issued by UPSC.
They’ve clearly mentioned in the press note that “questions on English Language Comprehension skills (of Class X level) contained in each set of Test Booklets of Paper-II are not to be attempted as these questions shall not be evaluated for gradation or merit”. (No. of questions on all English passages together=32).
They’ve also clearly stated that there’s no need to attend English comprehension questions ‘for which Hindi translation is not given’. There’re only 6 such questions (Q58 to Q63) in Booklet ‘D’, based on 2 passages which did not have hindi version (Q19 to Q24 in Booklet C uploaded above). Does this mean that (80-6)=74 questions are expected to be attempted?
or is it that only (80-32)=48 questions are to be attempted?
UPSC press note:

the standard of the questions is too low for UPSC civils exam. Though I did well, I am disappointed at the kind of questions asked
In this exam Upsc mean that don’t predict n no fix any strategies just study dynamic way so u can adopt any situation…
Plan study as per syllabus from base only

How people are scoring so high in paper-I. It wasn’t a balanced paper. With this UPSC has made luck factor more prominent in such a competitive exam.
Dear friends,
Please understand that Mrunal never guaranteed that what he is writing will be there in exam. This site is an excellent platform for self preparation. If you have mugged up rankings or other such stuff, that knowledge is going to remain there with you and you can make a dexterous use of those while writing mains. IAS is not all about clearing pre, there is a bigger challenge called mains and I firmly believe that mrunals data will be a great help. Anybody who would have analysed last four year papers will agree that UPSC keeps evolving new patterns every time to keep it different. Mrunal was also doing things based on his experience and anticipation, after all he was helping you. Remember he is not in UPSC panel to tell the tale. Someone said Lucent, I can guarantee you that lucent for ias is a myopic idea focussed only on clearing pre, main battle is further ahead. I believe someone from wetlands expertise was definitely in paper setters. I got all those wrong. Best wishes to all for next battle ahead.
friends no use of discussing cut off.. focus your energy on preparation for either mains or your other career backup.. because only final result can resolve the confusion, so just chill out and on the basis of your gut feeling accept the reality..
hope for the best, i am also hoping for the same..
Totally Agree Sir
I applied only for Ifos- Mrunal sir what can be cutoff for it this year, in dilemma should i prepare for mains or not.
Hi, what can be the expected cut off ?
As a first time examinee, may be I won’t qualify, but nonetheless this site has helped me a lot to outline what to read. Previously I was lost in the woods!
By the way as mrunal sir has advised previously, get started for upcoming events comrades!
Csat to bahut accha tha numerical k marks to bonus marks the English chala gya to uska time numerica ko de paye.paper 1 is also good for these posts….jinka acha gaya unhe all the best aur jinka bura gaya unhe b all the best for upcoming new notification prepared and then enter the examination hall..all the best all of u aspirants ..
Thank You sir for all your guidance , My exam went well and I followed your guidance strictly , You are the Dronacharya for all of us “the aspirants” .keep guiding us . Waiting for your advice on mains .
This year prelims question proves that to clear prelims exam don’t study selectively. You must cover the syllabus entirely to be on safer side. UPSC did a 180 degree change by reducing the number of qns from Polity and Economy. I think we have to be very strong in our fundamentals and consolidate thereon. For paper 2, practise is the only solution as the questions are easy but lengthy.
Mrunal sir……upsc ne apni back-breaking move dikha hi di….
