Request: share your exam experience
RBI Grade B officer (Preliminary) exam was held on August 3, 2014 (Sunday) in two sessions. But since this exam is to be conducted online=>difficult for next years’ aspirant to find “previous question” papers. Therefore, I request all the readers, to share following data AFTER exam is over, in the comments below.
- What was the Span of current affairs latest and oldest topic asked in General Awareness?
- How much PIN (persons in news?) by the way, PIN-2014 series has been uploaded long time back. in case you missed, go to https://mrunal.org/current#pin
- General idea on “topicwise breakup” – in general awareness. How much economy (budget related), how much banking sector related and so on. Did they ask computer awareness in it?
- How tough was English section compared to SBI PO and CSAT?
- How tough / lengthy was Maths/DI section compared to other exams. Did they ask chillar questions like profit loss, or was it entirely focused on lengthy data interpretation as in SBI PO? what was the overall breakup?
- Reasoning section: did they ask high level reasoning like syllogism, assertion-reasoning, course of action etc?
- Other observations about pattern, trend, wisdom, tips for future aspirants.

Hi
Review of second session:
GA: Easy ( one could easily attempt 70-75) in 20-25 min
Eng: Easy ( 22-26) in 20 min
Reasoning : Moderate to difficult ,to attempt more than 40 questions. 1-2 questions from blood relation, questions from syllogism was mix of easy and confusing, sitting arrangement and puzzles can be solved after spending some time. in 40-50 min :(
Aptitude : I found it bit difficult ( perhaps my preparation was not RBI oriented ) but one can easily solve 15 to 17 in 30 min.
i cannot guess what will be the cut off but with av prep. one can attempt 135-140 question with high accuracy .
Finger crossed:P
I gave RBI morning shift exam today.
Exam started after one hour from scheduled time of 8: 30 a.m.
General Awareness was moderate I suppose. Not very tough. I attempted 55.
Banking and Finance questions were mostly there. 2 movie questions. 2 awards questions.
if you are preparing for IAS, it will be easyfor you.
English moderate: initiator and starter type questions were new in exam.
Maths: it was very lengthy. able to solve only 15 ques.
Reasoning: if you had prepared for SBI po reasoning, then it will be easy for you.
Overall: Cutoff will be low than last year of 126. Expecting it to be around 110.

Evening session ,, General awareness was easy , english also ok but had one new type of question style which I never solved:

I am not able to recall, going to sleep, attept 138/200 : 120 right approx for sure .
It was a nice experience although , good decision to drop UPPSC.
Mrunal’s scripts were Epic . i did 50+ objectives right and I didn’t read anything except some sports and awards. All is in detail in scripts.
Useless Ramesh Singh for this exam for phase I, Keep revising scripts and understand concepts available here. 70+ is a cake for u if u follow the only this site. Thnx Mrunal Sir
The questions in the beginning of the english section were rather unpleasantly surprising. I have never seen this type of questions before:
You are given two statements. To make a single statement, you are given Starters (A), (B) & (C) using which starters can a combined statement be produced : (now I don’t remember exact statements so I will just make up an example)
Statement 1: The company has reduced its greenhouse emissions.
Statement 2: This is due to eco-friendly investments & policies of using renewable mechanisms.
(A): Due to investments…
(B): Reduction in…
(C): Greenhouse emissions…
a. Only A & B
b. All A,B,C
c. Only A
d. None
I wish I could remember the exact questions but I found this surprise very annoying since there were at least 5 such questions. In this example you may think all three are applicable but the actual questions took a lot of thinking. You will initially feel like a sentence could be made using each of the starters in every question so it was difficult to reject any of the starters.
Many questions have already been shared by other people here, some more I can recall are (there were more options in the exam but I m writing fewer):
– Greenback is a popular name for: a.Yen b. Euro c. US Dollar
– Which of these is not in Delhi : a.Bibi ka maqbara b. jantar mantar c. jama masjid d. qutub minar
– Rajat Gupta was in news because a. US supreme court rejected his application to remain out of jail b. he confessed to his role in insider trading c. none of these
– MH 370 in news because a. it was shot down b. it disappeared c. it crossed over Chinese territory
– Which minister is an ENT specialist by profession – a. Harshvardhan
– Who preceded Raghuram Rajan – a.D. Subbarao
– How much is our CAD currently : not percentage but exact amount in $__billions
– Economic Advisory Council members include : a. PM B.Home Minister c.Foreign Minister d. Finance & Defence Minsiter
Dates were not asked except on which date this year Father’s day was celebrated.
Morning Shift
Difficulty Level:
GK: Moderate to Low
English: Easy
Quant: Moderate
Reasoning: Moderate
*GK covered in the exam was not older than 6 months in almost all the cases.
Breakup:
^More than 10 questions related to PIN.
^Majority of portion was from economy and bank related GK.
^2-3 questions related to General elections 2014
^Rest was mainly from newspaper headlines and routine news items.
>>No Ph.D. required, only a bird’s eye view at what is happening around will do the trick.
Indian Economy + RBI FAQ & Glossary + Mrunal Economy along with brief Budget analysis and newspaper reading for RBI GK is more than sufficient.
*Level of English was below SBI and CSAT in general. Only a para jumble (with 5 questions and time eater- 20 minutes in my case, can’t say about others) can be put under difficult category.
*Quant section was of moderate difficulty. One can easily find 15-16 easy questions.
^Though table and pie chart related questions (10 in number) were time consuming.
^Several questions related to inequalities for establishing a relationship between x and y (x<y, x<y etc.)
^One question related to mensuration ( Direct formula input for volume of a cylinder)
^One related to probability
^One question related to boat speed (upstream/downstream flow)
^One question related to mixing of liquids,
^One question related to work man hour.
^4-5 questions related to missing/wrong number in the series etc.
*Reasoning was also of moderate difficulty level and the pattern was very much like last year.
^Machine Input/Output – 5Q
^Three statement syllogism -5Q
^ Sitting Arrangements, Who stays on which floor – 10Q
^Data Sufficiency (More than 5)
^Cause/Effect related statements – 5Q
^Blood Relations
^Code language related questions etc.
My total attempts are 135 and final score would be around 110. In my case, para jumble ( 7 statement) proved to be the real culprit and a thorough spoilsport by eating approx. 20 minutes of my crucial time.
I request Mrunal sir to provide some insight on the way to go about para jumbles.
Some GK questions based on memory:
* Number of female MPs in current Lok Sabha
* State with maximum representations in the form of ministers at the center
*Economic Adviser to PM
*Which is the website of PM of India
*Current National Security Adviser
*International Women's Day
*Writer of Tale of Two Cities
*Sardar Sarovar Dam's place in the world(in terms of height) after addition of 17 ft.
* Eldest women parliamentarian in cabinet
* Which is wrong about WTO
Estd. as GATT in 1948
HQ in Paris
Relationship with IMF
*Which organization got Noble Peace Prize for Peace in 2013
* Two questions related to Bandhan
*One question related to RIDF etc. etc.
Well, If i compare this year RBI exam, It was tougher than last year except GA part. Most of the questions of GA is already discussed.
Quanta:- Lengthier than last year. A lot of calculation intensive question was asked.
Topic Wise:-
10 from DATA Interpretation
5 from DATA Sufficiency
5 from obtaining odd no. from the no. series
2 Questions from Mensuration ( Cylinder Surface Area, Rectangle)
1 from Probability
Reasoning:-
1. Puzzle based on seating arrangement (always asked in RBI) and take a lot of time.
2. Input arrangement Tougher than last year. Not tough but time consuming.
3. Syllogism 5 questions
4. 1 puzzle based on weight
5. 1 puzzle based on direction n seating arrangement
6. 5 questions from weaken n strengthen the statement.
English:- pattern was same as last year but surprise 5 questions based on which are sufficient to draw the same meaning.
GA:- Very easy than last year if anyone has gone through MRUNAL’s CA Capsules would have cracked more than 60 questions.
Some of the questions asked from MRUNAL CA article-
1. Attorney General of India
2. Young Women to climb MT. Everest.
3. Largest Thermal power plant of india.
4. which country has not the rupee currency.
5. who player Mr. Bean.
6. Sitter Who plays Bobby Jasoos.
7. which one is component of demand liability.
8. Earning from Agriculture will go where. like public fund, consolidation fund.
Rest all are discussed above.
quant was tough for me and it was time consuming. the way they twisted the answer for pie chart questions. we have to find the percentage of sales between say a and b but the answer were given as mixed fraction. how do you guys solved that? normal percentage can be easily calculated from the pie chart but expressing them in the form of mixed fraction, thats where i failed.
gave xam in evening shift…attempted 135 questions without any guess…..reasoning was lengthy.gs was good and easy. some of the questions are;-1)namo recently visited which country and who accompanied him 2)members of saarc 3)one of the cabinet minister who lost election but is a cabinet minister4)cabinet minister who is a dr.and ENT specialist 5)function of imf 6)uttarakhand received loan from one of the organisation, its name 6)questions related to mahila bank 7)when is fathers day celebrated 8)world bank president..9)SARFESI ACT related 10)banking ombudsman……these are the some of the questions i remember…english was good…reasoning made this xam tough, otherwise other portions were very good…enjoyed the xam as this was my first online xam…just focus on mrunal sir’s articles and practice reasoning and can excel in xam…..thank u MRUNAL SIR:-) :-)

*One question related to forex reserve
*Role of RBI
*In which loan Mortgage is required
*Which among the following is an intangible asset
*Credit related committee’s purpose
*In which case a banker is not likely to extend credit facility
*One question related to lease (features) etc.
RTGS , Banking ombudsman – 10 lac limit, financial sector regulator, prime minister first foreign visit, who accompanied him, which country praised Pm invitation to saarc countries, saarc – c for co operation, rbi functions, raghuram rajan preceded whom, gulzar conferred phalke award, gilt edge, My advice: study something about everything, no need to go in depth. world bank chief name, i attempted 42/80, dint attempt any question in which i was 1% confuse. maths- 1 question from probability, 10 from d.I,work time, some percentage. reasoning :syllogism 5 question , who lives above whom, whether both statement needed or not.
how i dug my own grave: after i attempted 42 question of economics, i was overwhelmed with time left. 101 mins remaining, i started pie chart. same like sbi po, my brain was screaming”please some one give me calculator”, when i finished 6/10 of d.i question 59 mins were left. still my brain was saying atleast attempt 15 question, succeeded in 12. ok hands tremor starts now, reasoning 60 question left, english 30 question left. english 18/30 (level medium-high, comprehension very easy), reasoning 10-12 attempt. i attempted 80/200. if i had 1 more hour my attempt might have crossed 150 questions. Overall advice: dont read economics till last hour , start english maths ,the moment you finish reading this.
How to score 140 : 50/80 in economics (too easy), english(25/30)(Not so easy),maths(14-18)(practice practice practice, hide a calculator in your pocket),reasoning(40)(HAHAHA). Gen cut off- 110-115 . Cos if it exceeds 115, i m still not in competition.
If i am given one more chance : I can score far better, dont get too relaxed reading this statement.reason- although syllogism was my strong point but after getting 2 no conclusion of first two answer i doubted all remaining answer.

Compared to last yr ppr was easy. This may be because last yr I didn’t knw anything abt economy! ;)
GA span was 3 months at max I guess!
exact allocations given to programs were asked. Budha birth place was also asked. Many questions related to PM Modi and his govt ministers.
Which award was won by Vinoba bhave, Prakash Javadekar in common something like this question was there. Currency-country matching and country-capital odd man out waala type questions. :p
V.S. Naipul authored book.
English was nice but with some twist. A new pattern was introduced in this which I had not faced in any other banking exam. Sentences have to be joined but we had to choose the starting words which can join the sentences.
QA section loooooong calculations. Attempted only 13.
Reasoning: I love this section. It was good. Moderate, this is what we can say abt it.
BUT AFTER READING THE REVIEW OF MORNING SESSION CANDIDATES I am very much stressed that whether I will clear this exam or not! As I have attempted only 122 with 3 reviewed. Ppl hv attempted 150+ :O :/ :(
God Bless me :) :)
At last..
MRUNAL SIR, “THANKS” FOR UR GUIDANCE. COZ OF U ONLY TODAY I KNOW WHAT ECONOMICS AND BANKING IS. WHATEVER KNOWLEDGE I HAVE TODAY REGARDING COMPETITIVE EXAMS DATS ALL COZ OF U.
THANKS A LOT SIR.
Hi,evng session GA,,,,,,57/80 (99%accuracy). English,,,,26/30(4 questions. Palke hi nahi pade).Reasoning,,,,,,41/60 (puzzle and Input question. Nai kiye).Quant,,,,,,21/30……….lets hope together
GA – 68 (cakewalk)
English – 19 (moderate)
Quant – 14
Reasoning – 32
Total : 132
Fingers crossed as Quant and Reasoning wr time consuming . Expecting cutoff to be lower than the previous yr.
Hello
I took exam in the afternoon session.
As already known the exam was divided into 4 sections
G.S. – was extremely easy.
Ex – 1. Current governor of rbi
2. Father’s day celebrated on
3. First asian to win nobel prize – rabindranath tagore
4. Modi’s 1st visit to which country after becoming PM
5. Current finance minister
6. Who is in the current cabinet inspite of loosing the elections – arun jaitley
7. Vinoda bhave, dalai lama n 2 more names – won which award = roman magsaysay
8. Gautam buddha’s birthplace – lumbini
9. MH 370 was in news beacuse
10. Rajat gupta was in news recently because
11. Who accompained modi on his first visit to bhutan
12. Which act allows banks to forfeit the property which is kept as collateral – SARFESI act
13. Fifa world cup final venue
14. Which of the foll team not a part of ipl
And so on…
English – barring a few questions, others were easy.
There was a comprehension, parajumbles, place the word
Reasoning – not difficult but time consuming
Quant – difficult as well as time consuming
Ex. Data interpretation question involving 2 pie charts.
1st chart had %share of total books sold by 6 distributors. Total books sold = 64000
2nd chart talked about %share of total ACaDEMIC books sold by 6 distributors. Total =42000
Complex because
A. Individual values for each store for total books and acadmic as well
B. Calculation involving non academic books. It was to be taken out by substracting academic ones from non academic.
2nd DI question involved percentage of literates in 6 villages.
Also literate and illiterates in all the villages. This is not the end :p
Then male and female ration of literates as well as illiterates
And trust me the questions in quant were not that easy. I was expecting IBPS type of level but RBI had a few surprises to offer.
Overall the exam was below my level of expectations. The computer interface was really irritating. Pen paper mode can easily allow you to scribble in the q paper, thus making life easy. Here, i had to write the same q again to solve it.
Attempted 150/200. Hoping for the best :/
Sir, what is Carbon Credit?
This question was also there.
plz xplain this.
Refer to Kyoto protocol written by mrunal sir in enb section.
Thanks Vinay
Though exam was moderate to tough specially quant n English were tough. I feel game was not up to mark it was more ca than ga. I went through Ramesh Singh which is of little use as static part not asked but indirectly in five ques. Mrunal one thing I would like to share is that since I bps is conducting exams these days hence ques are similar for RBI SBI n I bps po because they are setting ques n they do not have good ques bank for RBI. Today ga standard was down not up to rbi .
no question was .mod4’s first visit to which country??

one question was match the following kind capital and country
able to recall only this much right now..
I’ve attempted 110 only :(
45 in reasoning..
others approx 20-20-25(GA)
BTW thanks to this page..good work Mr Mrunal..thanks a lot :)
SHORT and SWEET: If somebody had read all your articles under economy section and PIN (13-14),……and have basic knowledge in maths and reasoning…. He/She will pass this exam with flying colors…… THANKS A LOT MRUNAL FOR YOUR VALUABLE GUIDANCE…….KEEP ON THE GOOD WORK……
I think for general it will 112to 118
What was the Span of current affairs latest and oldest topic asked in General Awareness?
For the morning session, current affairs were from pretty recent issues. April-June/July. Yes, the july one being ‘The actress in bobby jasoos’, probably.
How much PIN (persons in news?
Very few, like the contenders for the Afghan presidential elections, Newly appointed NSA etc.
General idea on “topicwise breakup” – in general awareness. How much economy (budget related), how much banking sector related and so on. Did they ask computer awareness in it?
Around 40% were banking related, one or two questions on economic survey, one or two on budget like amount allocated for the bullet train, and around 40% on General awareness. Nothing from computer awareness in my session. If you regularly read newspapers, you can answer around 30/80.
How tough was English section compared to SBI PO and CSAT?
No idea about SBI-PO. Compared to CSAT, the level was pretty much the same. Parajumbles, Reading comprehension, word meanings (Jeopardized) etc.
How tough / lengthy was Maths/DI section compared to other exams. Did they ask chillar questions like profit loss, or was it entirely focused on lengthy data interpretation as in SBI PO? what was the overall breakup?
DI was ratio and profit loss combined. Took a bit of time. But the numerics were not so tough, as most of them were multiples. Not much chillar questions. But doable. Quants were like 1) r+h of a cylinder is given, find volume. 2) 5L of water is added after removing same qty of fruit juice from a 100% soln. Repeatd twice. Final conc of juice: water is 81:19, find the initial qty of fruit juice.
Reasoning section: did they ask high level reasoning like syllogism, assertion-reasoning, course of action etc?
Syllogism was not there. Course of action was there. Reasoning was a bit lengthy. Could only attempt around 22 in this section as i kept this section for the last 25 minutes.
Other observations about pattern, trend, wisdom, tips for future aspirants.
My overall attempt is only 121 with an 80-90% accuracy. I see that the cut off was 127 last year. So not pinning much hopes on cracking the prelims this year, which was overall an easy paper. I would advise the future aspirants to focus on time and precision. You should mentally set a timer for each section, as the application doesn’t provide an individual timer. 30 minutes for quant, 20 for verbal, 40 for GK and 40 minutes for reason would be an apt distribution. Do reasoning ONLY IN THE END. Verbal, followed by Quant, GK and Reasoning would be a nice strategy. Good luck to everyone for the mains as well as the future aspirants.
Now I can peacefully go back to my CAT preparation :D

Hi All,
Gave my RBI Grade ‘B’ exam for 4th time. Every time cleared pre, cleared mains twice in last 3 attempts, missed selection by 1.5 and 1 marks in last two attempts respectively. Given the experience I have related to RBI exams, the exam was of moderate difficulty, expect cut-off to range between 110-120 for general candidate. Reasons are stated below:
1. GA was simpler than last year(+5), I attempted 79.
2. English was tougher than last year(-3), attempted 29.
3. QA was much tougher than last year(-7), attempted 30.(belongs to mathematics background)
4. Reasoning was tougher than last year(-5), attempted 32.
Conclusion: Cut-off must be down by (+5-3-7-5) i e -10 so I expect cut off to be 116(+/-5).
Looking at the last two years exams including current one, one must prepare for reasoning and practice QA seriously. GA can be covered by watching “DD News”, listing BBC Hindi/AIR News and reading Economic times. No special preparation required. I was out of touch as working for long hours as a PO in premier nationalised bank, still could attempt 79/80 in GA with almost 95% accuracy. Do your preparation wisely.
Sir,
August 3 afternoon
General awareness is easy can do well
Reasoning and arithmetic/aptitude are really time taking could do well in the limited period
Arithmetic pie chart academic and non academic books and table regarding literates and non-literates are time taking
Series are head breaking
time and work one problem typing x words A takes “p” mins b takes “q” mins c takes “r” mins then if they work for equal mins how much they can type something related question was asked
Boat and stream one question
2 equations preferably quadratic equations related question 4-5 in no. options are x>-y x=y y>x ,none of the above etc
Reasoning questions are not easy for me
statements and conclusions,
syllogisms,
students are learning students are fast li ke se da lu ,time is with ke zi ji la etc then what is “are with fast” type of question
ABCDEFG 7 floors
Series on Tallest to shortest arrangements time taking problems and lengthy
