Request: share your exam experience
RBI Grade B officer (Preliminary) exam was held on August 3, 2014 (Sunday) in two sessions. But since this exam is to be conducted online=>difficult for next years’ aspirant to find “previous question” papers. Therefore, I request all the readers, to share following data AFTER exam is over, in the comments below.
- What was the Span of current affairs latest and oldest topic asked in General Awareness?
- How much PIN (persons in news?) by the way, PIN-2014 series has been uploaded long time back. in case you missed, go to https://mrunal.org/current#pin
- General idea on “topicwise breakup” – in general awareness. How much economy (budget related), how much banking sector related and so on. Did they ask computer awareness in it?
- How tough was English section compared to SBI PO and CSAT?
- How tough / lengthy was Maths/DI section compared to other exams. Did they ask chillar questions like profit loss, or was it entirely focused on lengthy data interpretation as in SBI PO? what was the overall breakup?
- Reasoning section: did they ask high level reasoning like syllogism, assertion-reasoning, course of action etc?
- Other observations about pattern, trend, wisdom, tips for future aspirants.

Thank you all for sharing your prelim experiance in the comments- it’ll be of great help to future aspirants.

Iwas in the second shift.Every body has discussed the paper thoroughly. I would like to add two points.
1. One question of current affairs in GS was asked of the news which happened on 10th July(or 7th July). So current Affairs question span ranges as close as just 20 days before the exam.
2. There was a Complete;y new type of question in English(5-6 of them) which i had never seen in my life.. It was something like two sentences were given with three possible starting lines which could be used as starter for the sentences and we were asked to find the possible answers.
I took the exam in the afternoon batch. Overall the paper was quite difficult than all other PO exams. The topics for Maths, Reasoning, English are same as that for clerical the only difference being the difficulty level was quite high and complicated (one needs to rack up their brains to certain answers )
GK: 2-3 questions related to awards (e.g 1st nobel prize winner of India), current cabinet ministers (eg Defence, minister who is doctor in ENT), Budget 2014-15 (Fiscal deficit “value” not in terms of percentage), RBI Functions, banking (eg Guilt edge, inflation, max loan to be given by Bhartiya mahila bank, Repo rate, number of RBI associate banks). To conclude Gk was related to the past 4-5 months. One needs to know the basics of banking theory and financial market.
REASONING : 10-15 questions from sitting arrangement (circular table), 10-15 questions from Syllogism, 5 questions from coding, i/p o/p, series. Overall Reasoning was moderate except circular table arrangement.
MATHS : quant included questions relating to which statement is required (10- 15 ques), Boats and streams, probability. Maths was similar to the clerical level
ENGLISH : 2 passages, fill in the blanks, rest was similar to PO/Clerical level
Overall it was tough compared to last year.
GA – 73
Reasoning – 34
Eng – 29
Quant -10
Overall – 146
i agree with you.. but this is true particularly in case of quant and english section.. reasoning and GA was easier than earlier.
First Attempt
Same thing as above. GA and English managable but Quant and DI quite hard, had to pick doable ones. Overall attempt 129 but absolutely no risk taken so accuracy is going to be high. I don’t know what will happen, depends on the cutoff! may be I am on the borderline. Lets See!
I wont get into the details/types of questions. Many aspirants have already covered that. Will give one advice to future aspirants. This was my second attempt for RBI and what I have learnt is you need to give ample time to Reasoning section. Last year it was difficult and dis year it was more difficult. I really doubt about my prospects of clearing the paper, all because of reasoning section. Whoever is targeting RBI, while appearing for online exam, allot approx 50-55 mnts to reasoning section and my bet would be to attempt reasoning section first and then rest of the section. with rest of the section, difficulty level was more or less same like last year.
What was the Span of current affairs latest and oldest topic asked in General Awareness?
*Can’t say exactly but very old questions were not asked! If one was thorough with recent current affairs (past 2-3 months newspapers thoroughly, as events and persons usually repeat themselves) along with attached conceptual knowledge, could be done
How much PIN (persons in news?) by the way, PIN-2014 series has been uploaded long time back. in case you missed, go to https://mrunalmanage.wpcomstaging.com/current#pin
*Not many but those which were asked Booby Jassos, Ajit Dobhal, Satya Nadella, were quite simple questions
General idea on “topicwise breakup” – in general awareness. How much economy (budget related), how much banking sector related and so on. Did they ask computer awareness in it?
*No computer awareness, majorly economy related only
How tough was English section compared to SBI PO and CSAT?
*Cant really compare with CSAT as CSAT is a different ball game (quality comprehension there) but seemed to be on par with SBI PO with a more economic tinge (just an opinion!)
How tough / lengthy was Maths/DI section compared to other exams. Did they ask chillar questions like profit loss, or was it entirely focused on lengthy data interpretation as in SBI PO? what was the overall breakup?
*No chillarity ! tricky reasoning questions were asked. One had to nitpick the doables. Can’t say uncrackable but required time more than allotted. Or may be i didn’t practice enough. In quant too seemingly easy questions had lengthy calculations.
Reasoning section: did they ask high level reasoning like syllogism, assertion-reasoning, course of action etc?
Other observations about pattern, trend, wisdom, tips for future aspirants.
Yes! Syllogism,Assertion-Reasoning was asked! Course of Action (decision making) were not asked. Pattern was same as we have in typical reasoning things sitting, blood relations, syllogisms, logical reasoning but was of a quite high level certainly more tricky and confusing than CSAT. e.g. They would ask two back to back syllogisms with same words and those words themselves were synonymous. (e.g. Vision, Aim, Objective, Goal). needs significant practice.
Regards
hello sir, I appeard from chandigarh, in morning shift. Overall experience was good. The general aware. portion consisted of ques. on the topic
RBI,
monetary policy,
one question of a program started by SBI in collaboration with some other org.
,question on policies on currency,
mr. bean’s original name,
a tale of two cities author
a question on countries and their capitals
subsidy under which head capital or revenue expenditure, with two other questions( here i remember your eco survery lectures on youtube)
bugdet for foreign exchange in 2014
Ceo of Apple and infosys
head quarters of wto, with two more questions on WTO
one question on barack obama i.e. to which former american president ,obama is in news
presidential candidates of afghanistan…i think hamid and abdullah abdullah
Women day
2.english portion was quite easy.
first five six quest. contained few lines taken from somewhere and then possible satartings were given in terms of phrases…
then a paragraph on savings and investments and its effect on household and private and public sectors..the question based on this para were very good and easy
a close test was there..easy
3. quantitative apt
started with ques. on number series….i could solve only one out of 5
a quest on probability…u have to draw 2 balls out of two bags , either red or green- easy
5 -6 ques on equation solving . two quadratic equations one with x variable and other with y… then we have to compare the values of x and y….whether x>y,X<y etc….quite easy
then a question on pie chart ..
a question on DI table with some data on literate and illiterate males and females of six cities given in terms of ratio and total no. of females of one city was given
4 reasoning
good questions were there to score well
input output quite easy 3-4 ques
circular seating arrangement
syllogism quite easy 5-6 ques
assumption reasoning average level
statement conclusion medium level
and many other easy question were there…but i could answer correctly only 118…now someone tell me should i hope or not ??? :)
I am very much disappointed with RBI. As the exam is conducted by IBPS now, the level is going down day by day atleast in the case of General Awareness paper..gone are the days when paper of RBI was one of the toughest paper in country having quality questions which checks concepts rather than giving asking for stupid things.
I came across some farzi questions like Bobby Jassos actress, oldest minister,Max no of ministers are from which state, Mr. Bean’s real name, who accomponied PM to bhutan, who is doctor in cabinet etc etc…..
these questions are total waste infact such questions do not deserve a place in question paper of any exam. don’t know what what IBPS/RBI wanna check by giving such questions..no serious candidate will study such stupid things for an exam but of course if u follow India TV or aajtak rather than following THE Hindu on daily basis you can answer the questions perfectly.
PS. I gave exam in morning shift. Maths was pretty good (Thumsup for that).
My attempts : GA 59, Eng 24, Maths 12, Reasoning 33
Wow .. I guess all the ques have been covered .. I will just share my experience:
Exam didn’t go so well as had expected.
General Awareness: Attempted 52/60 in general awareness.. Quite a few were guesswork reason being the kind of GA asked was purely factual based unlike CSE .. heights were 1st foreign visit of NM? who did he visit with? lol! Anyways the span of Current affairs was very recent in fact I would say a lot of factual ques from Modis prime ministerial candidature period to till budget and ESI release sorts … however there were many generalistic ques whose period cant be defined like there were Magsaysay award winner from past (I read the recent ones), 1st nobel prize winner from India – CV Raman, Mother Teresa, Amratya Sen, etc. …
English was good 24/30 but a lil disappointed with 1st 6 ques as they were unclear – it wasted some of my time to understand the question itself …. and so was the case with 2 of the fill in the blanks … because otherwise I attempt almost 100% ques in eng with 100% accuracy,
Quant and DI extremely disappointing – this sec was most time taking and toughest – could attempt only 6/30 .. Reason being because I had the reviews saying the Quant is like cakewalk and very easy .. doesnt even need preparation .. etc. so I was left with only 10 minutes when I reached this section .. to discover that it was just the opposite … DI sets had lengthy calculations and so was d case with quant
doubt that I can clear sectional cut off ..
Reasoning was fine though strategically shorter and easier ques were placed at the end 35/60.
Now all Answers to Mrunal’s ques:
1. What was the Span of current affairs latest and oldest topic asked in General Awareness? – very recent current affairs but GK was wide … interestingly very less sports ques (I guess just the one on where world cup was held this year) … though based on last years feedback I read a lot of sports
2. How much PIN (persons in news?) – Lots I would say if NM was one .. others were famous and controversial books authors, awards winners, succession of RBI gov (expected!) etc.
3. General idea on “topicwise breakup” – in general awareness. How much economy (budget related), how much banking sector related and so on. Did they ask computer awareness in it? – Economy budget related may be around 5 ques .. banking quite a lot (terms and rates, products loan based, etc.) – may be around 15 – 20 .. chunk of it!, Computer awareness – NO … rest people in news
4. How tough was English section compared to SBI PO and CSAT? – English apart from those 6 ques which seemed unclear to me rest was easy but compared to SBI PO I think PO was easier
5. How tough / lengthy was Maths/DI section compared to other exams. Did they ask chillar questions like profit loss, or was it entirely focused on lengthy data interpretation as in SBI PO? what was the overall breakup? – I am not sure as I couldnt attempt full paper but there were % ratio proportion based tricky ques .. no way chillar ones … DI were longish just like SBI PO
6. Reasoning section: did they ask high level reasoning like syllogism, assertion-reasoning, course of action etc? – Syllogism asked but was kept in end .. best part was based on same statement there were 2 ques (there were 2 such cases and these ques appeared after 2 – 3 questions break .. i was happy that I drew venn at a clean place ;))
7. Other observations about pattern, trend, wisdom, tips for future aspirants.
TREND: Need to mug up economy basics like what is what sorts, some CAD and deficit numbers, revised and current ratios; GK very basic – minutest facts which we generally tend to ignore – may be some online capsule before exam would be good idea – importance on place person year date etc.
Forgot to mention … I appeared in afternoon shift from Mumbai and my center was full of girls and PH candidates …
Can anyone tell an estimate as to how many appeared in tot?
3rd August 2014,1.30Pm Slot Exam Held at Mumbai
As the questions discussed in above sections are there in the exam.
First of all…Thanks Mrunal and co.
As this was my first attempt to these type of exams. It was really awesome experience with your guys.
All the concepts tought very nicely with examples. It hekped me to update my economics knowledge too.
Overall Review Summary: As per the analysis from Last years Exams this was toughest in all for sure :(
My Attempts:
1)GK-57 (with 80-90 % accuracy) Daily reading and Forums can be sufficient to this section
2)Eng-22(60-75% acc) Collection of Vocabulary needed
3)Quant: 10(80-90% acc) This was my strong part be4 appearing but now thinking of its weak point. Very tough …Unexpected sections came and especially DI too tough and time consuming lost 5+ minutes without attempting any questions in some parts…
4)Reasoning: 26(90% acc) Medium to difficult level….Time consuming questions in seating arrangement, Building floors, etc parts..Lengthy as well…Again dis pointed myself in this section as well
Total attempted: 115….80-85 marks expected which I don’t think are enough to qualify …only some magic can change this complexion :P
Please fill to free comment on any chances about my qualification to next round or any ..:)P
If you are general it should be difficult brother.. last year paper was not much difficult in comparison to this and cut off was 126, anyways cut off this time too shall be upwards of 110-115
THanks Nitin….Luckily me from OBC but still feeling will be short by 10-15
My exam was in second shift,
GK section was the easiest one
English no difficult but ok .
Reasoning was time consuming and difficult
Quant was tricky but not that difficult……….overall nice experience . I did 127 overall
pardon me for this..but don’t the applicants take an oath or an undertaking not to reveal the questions in any form whatsoever….hmm…quite interesting all this.
I think it is for preventing proliferation of questions from morning batch to evening batch.
Hi all,
I have attended morning section for RBI Grade B officer.
a) General awareness
Difficulty level :Easy
GA was quite easy …Most of the questions are from Current affairs and basic economy concepts and banking ….
a) Money market and Certificate of Deposit.
b) Monetary instruments of RBI
c) Period for getting money via Repo……whether month or everyday
c) RBI deputy governor recently appointed
d) Banking related questions like NPA and credit history organization
e) Questions on Inflation
f) Recent visit by PM
g) Sardar sorovor dam …height position among world
h)Some questions on Collateral ….loans
i) IMF president
j) Secretary of Finance—
Some budget questions and economic survery
and Attorney general recently appointed
and most surprising some movie questions like who acted in Kochaidayan
j) Many questions can be covered if we religiously follow The Hindu, NCERT and economic survey and Mrunal.org ….so yu can score up to 70 if we are thorough with Hindu, Economic survery/ Budget and Mrunal.org
attended ::: 69
B) English : ( 26 attended)
Sentence arrangement little bit tricky ….But rest are fine …
c) QA( Quantitative aptitude)
Very tough …similar to that of SBI PO… DI was very lengthy calculation and bit tough…. So some questions are number series and EQUATIONS… I was not able to attend more than 10..
d) Reasoning Level : Moderate
But it was time consuming … so totally attended only 24 ::: but with little bit practice one can attend 40 …
Many questions on Strong and weak arguments and syllogism and Input and output reasoning and inference and arrangements ..so MK Pandey (Analytical reasoning ) is very useful here.
Totally I have attended : 126 ;;;;
But 140 will be very good attempt.
I agree with u anand . Quantitave aptitue was tough and same that of SBI.
not to wory about quant apti cutof it will be 7-8marks for gen and obc not more than that
yes tru… quant was as same as sbi po….
Hello Mrunal Sir,
Exam was of very good standard i must say.
1. GK section had many easy questions with 10% tricky questions like exact amount of India’s CAD etc.
2. English was good, typical questions but lengthy passages.
3. Quant was not difficult but time consuming. Questions like two quadratic equations of X & Y were given and we had to find relation between X & Y. Since both X & Y had 2 values, you had to do permutations again after solving quadratics to find whether x>=y or x <=y or x=y or NOTA.
Reasoning I feel was toughest and most time consuming part.
4. We generally get questions like 8 people in a circle with some conditions and we decide their places. But this time for these 8 persons they included 2 criteria: place & language. Which made it tougher as well as time consuming. Almost all questions were like that. No known sources of reasoning books have dealt with this kind of questions so far.
Just fingers crossed !!
quanti was very tough. attemted 128.easy gk..not helpful for civil service aspirants unlike last yr.just to see what will be the cut off.
RBI was pretty similar to SBI PO..
1)GA – Many factuals asked. Names(heads of ministries,IMF etc) , figures(allotment in budget for specific ministry). More of memory based. Conceptual based ques were also more.
2)English was easy. Normal standard.
3)Apti was tougher compared to SBI PO..Especially DI ques.
4)Reasoning was as expected. No much surprises.
not to wory about quant apti cutof it will be 7-8marks for gen and obc not more than that
20 marks down to last year’s cutoff because it was online paper ..112-118for general cat not more than that.
lets see vivek, i am hoping for the same.. i am sure to get 125-130+ overall but quant can be a spoiler. attempted only 15 so fingers crossed.
those who are wishing that cut off will be less than last year are generally consoling themselves. as one of aspirants rightly said that board has decided the cut off for individual sections as GEN-45%, OBC-40%,SC-35%,ST-35%,ST-35% will remain for this year also. no of candidates for phase-2 are easily available within the above cutoff zone. so the chances of relaxing the cut-off are remote.
Hiii I attend the exam yesterday english was ok Gk was bit hard 4 non banking stutents most time consume by QA n DI it was too tough
so nt much time remain 4 reasoning so wht will b the cut off??

Quant was very tough….I had not expected it to be that difficult. One feedback to Mrunal sir- The pattern of GA in RBI has changed, so you must update the study plan to avoid confusion for future aspirants. Now they don’t ask ques on core economy(static). So books like Ramesh singh aren’t useful for prelims. The pattern of GA is now more or less similar to IBPS PO. I just hope that I get through the prelims……..

As all we know rbi is central bank..so paper was of that level….u have to prepare for dis atleast 3 months bcz vacanices are very low in dis paper …so wat is mst imp is to attempt max questions as possible..it require lot of practice of maths and reseaning…….hope my feedback help other in their preparations..
Hi all,
I have attended afternoon section for RBI Grade B officer……….
a) General awareness
Difficulty level :Easy
GA was quite easy …Most of the questions are from Current affairs and basic economy concepts and banking ….
such as questions on Modi govt portfolios, modi first visit to foreign country, IMF, World Bank chairman and some other questions on that, Role of RBI, some budget related questions, books author(2 questions) etc.
B) English : (tough)
Sentence arrangement little bit tricky ….… one new kind of question in which t two sentences were given and you have to combine both the sentences for which three or four statement was given and you have to find out which statement out of these 4 stataement can be starting sentence.
passage for fill in the blanks was also quite tough.
c) QA( Quantitative aptitude)(Medium)
number series question : find out wrong one .(5 questions0
x>y or X<=y type of questions but roots of equations was in terms of sqrt(3) and complicated.
DI calculation intensive
one question was on area (r+h was given and tsa of cylinder was given you need to find out volume)
d) Reasoning Level : very tough
question on circular arrangement( eight person + eight languages given ) wasted lot of time and got nothing.
input output: too much lengthy having 9 different alphabets and numbers.
one question on person living on different floors (probably got it correct :))
one question on arrangement on lecture (too tough to try)
some pen are hen type question interstingly
decision making
inference
data in statement 1 alone sufficeint type question.
chances are quite bleak but hoping for some magic……………………….
I think scaling will be there because in some set reasoning easy and quant tough and otherwise also……………..

3rd of august second shift:
GK:
– its was mix of easy (masala/political news ) + some tricky questions on banking n Finance.
– unlike previous years, there was no govt scheme question (as i can recall, check others source also)
– some monetary related ques with tricky options like…how liquidity in economy is to be drain a) bank rate b) reverse repo c) others than given options d) increase SLR e) increase CRR
– lots of political/ appointment/ modi related ques ( seems a fan of indian PM) and professional of cabinet minister. this time abt Harsbhardhan , in sbi po abt jaitely , next will be abt rajnath singh!
– state related ques abt telengana, maharastra like which existing district is divided to form two districts in maharastra? (THANE), name of cyclone related to mumbai ,etc.
– financial market : which commodity is not trade at commodity exchange ? a) crude oil b) commodity, etc,,
– 65 to 70 questions attempted by many ppl
english:
– lots of ppl saying comprehension was easy. why? the topic was financial inclusion. BUT options becomes tricky if you some extra knowledge abt topic which is Not mention in passage. it can lead to negative marks if not handle carefully.
– cloze test easy one
– rbi innovative ques on sentence connector ( wastes my 2-3 mins, got nothing)
– para jumble ( not easy as its not story type like asked in clerk/rrb, easy once u got the stater line= moderate )
Quant:
– most of book on DI seems to outdated. question were lengthy n need good selective approach. this time 2 sets- one tabular one piechart
– No direct question on simplification
– probablity ( ibps didnot asked last year i think, but every year pattern is changing, so donot draw any conclusion)
– inequality of two quadratic equations ( last year IbPS asked, RBI didnot asked)
-data sufficiency question
– T&D, time n work, boat, CI, Mixture .rtc. (RS aggr Outdated)
– prev yr they asked inequality based on two simple algebric eqn. this time Not.
reasoning:
– logical deduction. lots of ques on probablity of conclusion. so Tick & Cross and PN (i read many found difficult to solve it) may not work fine. venn diagram is very good here.
– I/O code
_ blood relation (4-5 )
– puzzle & arrangements ( i didnot read these question)
– logical reasoning; inference, weakening – strengthening, cause effect etc,.. long sentences n based on recent events like Bullet train, etc. like ibps po last yr
– Inequalities
i am sure most of would have written sbi po too……which was tougher? how many fancy their chances in both??
Sbi Po was tougher
