Although Danny usually underestimates the power of Bollywood heros but when it comes to CSAT, he crams NCERTs religiously
| 1.Glacial cycle | Medium. By common understanding both responsible but a player would hesitate before ticking in haste. |
| 2.Seasonal wind reversal | Easy. Verbatim answer in NCERT |
| 1.Changpa | Difficult. Because hard to memorize location and occupation of all tribes across India. |
| 2.Saree | Easy-to-medium depending on your taste for such economic geography factoids. |
| 3.Arunanchal rivers |

[Act 1] Answerkey: Physical Geography
Q1: Evolution vs Glacial cycles
Which of the following phenomena might have influenced the evolution of organisms?
- Continental drift
- Glacial cycles
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2.
Continental drift: 200 million years ago, that large continent Pangaea starts breaking up. Last Glacial cycle ended 15000 years ago. And as per the Geological timeline-table given in TMH, page 50-51, there were signs of evolution at both stages. Therefore, both events “might” have influenced the evolution. Anyways, for solid reference:
| Continental drift | One of the most prominent example of the effect of continental drift on evolution of organisms, is the unique primates found in Australia and South America. Ref.Google book#1 |
| Glacial cycle | The final stages of evolution of Genus Homo occurs in the last 3 glacial cycles. Ref google book#2 |
Therefore, answer C Both 1 and 2 correct.
Q2: Seasonal wind reversal
The seasonal reversal of winds is the typical characteristic of
- Equatorial climate
- Mediterranean climate
- Monsoon climate
- All of the above climates
Answer C because
- Class11 India Physical, Chapter 4 page 33: Monsoon connotes the climate associated with seasonal reversal in the direction of winds.=> Either C or D
- I couldnot find a source that says Equatorial climate involves “Seasonal reversal of Wind”=> D is eliminated, and we are left with “C”.
[Act 2] India Eco/Human Geography
Q1: Changpa people
With reference to ‘Changpa’ community of India, consider the following statement:
- They live mainly in the State of Uttarakhand.
- They rear the Pashmina goats that yield a fine wool.
- They are kept in the category of Scheduled Tribes.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- Lists Changpa under ST category from Jammu Kashmir.
- This means #1 is wrong and #3 is right. This eliminates A and D.
- Now everything depends on whether #2 is right or wrong.
- Pashmina: The Kashmir Shawl and Beyond follows the origin of the fibre right to the Changra goats, which are specially reared by the nomadic Changpa tribes of Ladakh, and then its refinement at the hands of the Kashmiri artisans and subsequent export and consumption by the rest of the world.
- Changpa tribe’s present population is less than 9,000, and the adverse climatic conditions which force them to keep moving 10 to 12 times a year.
- In Ladakh, merchants pay Rs.1,200 to 1,500 for a kilogram of raw Pashmina
Therefore, #2 is right hence answer B: 2 and 3 correct.
Counterview:
Question says “Pashmina goats”, but Hindu says “Changra goats”. And goats don’t give ‘wool’. Ans. Well, Tehlaka.com connects the dots:
- This area is also known as Rupsho Valley where the main occupation of the nomads is rearing yaks and Changra goats.
- The unforgiving winter makes the goats grow extremely warm and soft veneer, which is six times finer than human hair and is used to make Pashmina wool.
Therefore Changra goats = Pashmina wool. Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Saree Towns
Consider the following towns of India:
- Bhadrachalam
- Chanderi
- Kancheepuram
- Karnal
Which of the above are famous for the production of traditional sarees / fabric?
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- 1, 3 and 4
#2 is right because official Madhya Pradesh Ashoknagar district website
- “Chanderi is a tehsil of Ashoknagar district ..main occupation of the people of Chanderi is handicraft. Chanderi sarees are famous all over the world”
- This fact is frequently asked in MP PCS exams, and eliminates Option D
#3 Kancheepuram is right by common knowledge, but for the sake of reference- Silk board of India
- temple towns like Kancheepuram are renowned for their magnificent heavy silk sarees of bright colours with silver or gold zari works
- This eliminates Option A.
| Bhadrachalam | Disputed village during separation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. I did not find any source that say it’s famous for saree. |
| Karnal | Was in news because some of its villages will be included in NCR (National capital region). While it’s infamous for low sex ratio and female infanticide, I did not find any source that says it’s famous for saree. |
Therefore, Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
[Act 2] India Map/location
Side note: I’ve counted wildlife sanctuary location questions under environment.
Q1: Rivers of Arunanchal Pradesh
1. Consider the following rivers:
- Barak
- Lohit
- Subansiri
Which of the above flows / flow through Arunachal Pradesh?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Barak: Arunanchal Pradesh is wrong because
| NCERT |
|
| INDIA YEAR BOOK 2014 | Page 3 of – in third para-“The barak river , the head stream of Meghna rises in the hills in Manipur” |
Therefore, statement #1 is wrong, this automatically eliminates A, C and D. We are left with answer (B) 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Hills and Coasts
Consider these pairs
| 1. Cardamom Hills | Coromandel Coast |
| 2. Kaimur Hills | Konkan Coast |
| 3. Mahadeo Hills | Central India |
| 4. Mikir Hills | North-East India |
Which of the above pairs are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2
- 2 and 3
- 3 and 4
- 2 and 4
NCERT Class11 India Physical:
- Refer to figure 2.2 on page10 of the same book. You can see Kaimur hills is in central highlands, far away from Konkan Coast.
- Therefore, pair #2 is wrong, this eliminates option A, B and D. Thus we are left with answer C.

- Page 10 Oxford student atlas 2nd edition 2014.
Q3: Highways
| National Highway | Cities connected |
|---|---|
| 1. NH 4 | Chennai and Hyderabad |
| 2. NH 6 | Mumbai and Kolkata |
| 3. NH 15 | Ahmedabad and Jodhpur |
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- None
| NH4: | Thane to Chennai via Pune belgaum Hubli Banglore and Ranipet ; |
| NH6: | Dhule to Kolkatta via Nagpur- Raipur- sambalpur |
| NH15: | Pathnkot and kandla via Amritsar- Ganganagar- jaisalmer. |
Therefore answer D all wrong. Ref

Q4: 10-Degree Channel
Which one of the following pairs of islands is separated from each other by the ‘Ten Degree Channel’?
- Andaman and Nicobar
- Nicobar and Sumatra
- Maldives and Lakshadweep
- Sumatra and Java
NCERT Class11 India Physical, page 19: “The Andaman in the north and the Nicobar in the south are separated by a water body called 10 degree channel”. Therefore, answer A.

Q1: Turkey Location
Turkey is located between
- Black Sea and Caspian Sea
- Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea
- Gulf of Suez and Mediterranean Sea
- Gulf of Aqaba and Dead Sea

Ans- B- Black sea and Mediterranean Sea, Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas 2nd edition 2014.
Q2: Cities of SE.Asia
What is the correct sequence of occurrence of the following cities in South-East Asia as one proceeds from south to north? 1.Bangkok 2.Hanoi 3.Jakarta 4.Singapore Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 4-2-1-3
- 3-2-4-1
- 3-4-1-2
- 4-3-2-1

Ans- C (From south to north) Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas. For more answerkeys, visit Mrunal.org/answerkeys.

Good analysis bhai

Mrunal bro, what about questions on economics? By what date should be expect the answers on economics? And are you going to talk about expected cutoff? I know prediction is a difficult thing and to some it doesn’t make sense at all but I would like to know if you are going to talk about it. Please do reply and keep up the good work. You are amazing. God bless you.
क्या UPSC के परीक्षा-पत्र बनाने वाले सदस्यों की बुद्धिमता कहीं खो गई है(अथवा पहले से ही नहीं है)….
There r nearly 90 national highways in BHARAT nd they want us to learn all these in detail..what a bull-shit from UPSC’s side…
So you think they will give you the chance to score 100 %, never
Ankit mere dost..tu ek dm sahi kh raha h..k sabhi highway to kese hi yad kare..bt upsc chahta h k apne ko wo highways to yad hi hone chahiye jo apne aap m ek hi h.. Dekho 1 se 10 tak to yad hone hi chahiye,or baki sare frontiar highway..ab NH 15 north west border k sath sath chalta h to wo PTA hona chahiye..koro mandal cost malabar cost in sabhi k sath chalne wale highway..wo bhi jo north east region ko jodta h..to mere dost upsc inhi concept pr chala h shayd..meri to yahi strategy rahi..isi liye y sawal sahi ho gaya… Mere dost aisa my sochna k m jyada hoshiyari chhat raha hu..ek salah d raha hu…
अच्छी रणनीति है, दोस्त !
tera jaisa insaan ka kuchh v nhi ho saktata….
For seasonal reversal of winds—— Option is D.
please check and confirm.
yes,i too guess so. bcoz by tmh g.s manual it s clear that mediterranean -seasonal reversal of wind prevails; during summer area comes under trade winds(bcos itcz moves further polewards due to intense low pressure created by landmass)…..during winter it comes under westerlies….so both med and monsoon are possible.(there is no option to choose oly these two-so think abt the possibility of third)…… also equ region affected by seasonal winds….evident from elnino modoki….so answer is al the three…..bt key is upto upsc(unpredictable public service commission :P)
they r wanted to asked about the ocean current…in the form of wind system
monsoon- seasona; reversal of wind possible
medit- reversal occurs summer-trade winds;winter-westerlies(by tmh manual)
so no option with oli monsoon and medit; so analyse third option
equt- seasonal (doesnt mean oli summer and winter— may be elnino cycle)— shift in wind possible during elnino modoki
Very well… I used the same logic and there is chance that the Q will be cancelled or option is D.
Mrunal Sir… please look into this.
Check this link too

oh ho…dis is where upsc is so ‘shaatir’….plz look at d question. …reversal is “TYPICALLY” of…..the word typical wud do d trick here…..samje guys??
Yeah…its gven typical….meditrn regn typical char s trade winds @ summer and westerlies @ wintr…..culd u find any option with monsoon + meditrnen?!
thats y I opted c >> monsoon….ruling out Equatorial. ..
I think in mediterranean climate, we have sifting of wind belts and not reversal of wind. Although shifting is very much similiar to reversal in case of mediterranean but I still feel that the answer should be C.
Shift of Pressure winds =! ( not equal) to Reversal of Winds
For reversal, it has to cross Equator or it can be due to El Nino, so the answer is Monsson winds (& El Nino). In the end, UPSC will prevail.
Reversal of wind direction is not confined to monsoon winds only. There is a similar reversal of wind direction in Mediterranean regions also (trade winds in summer and westerlies in winter). Equatorial regions extending between 5 degree N and south also experience a similar reversal of wind with seasonal change. At the time of the summer solstice, winds blowing in the northern hemisphere part of the equatorial region are equatorial westerlies (forming the southwest monsoon over Indian subcontinent) while at the time winter solstice this very region experiences trade winds. Hence a seasonal reversal takes place in all these three regions.
Reversal in not consistant and distinct in case of meditteranean, and there is no option of B and C ….hence we need to go with the most suitable option that is C only !
The answer is C only. There are many local winds like sirocco, mistral…. blown around the Mediterranean region, but these are local winds not the ‘seasonal’. According to Goh Cheng Leong, sirocco may occur any time of year but most frequent in spring. And others are so. Page no. 143.

Sir, please guide us for Mains now.
Hi Mrunal sir,
Are u going to provide an article on studyplan for Mains-2014??
Or should we prepare our schedule based on the plan suggested by you in the ‘Study plan’ section for UPSC including the plan suggested while doing analysis of Mains 2013 papers.
Sir,Please reply to this even in yes or no at the earliest

mrunal i am unable to receive new posts in my mail account ….dont know why….kindly please check as it is happening since a couple of days
Same here sir. Even I am not able to receive notifications in mail.
FEELING SAD DAILY HAUNT WITH STUPID MISTAKES I COMMITTED IN THIS SECTION.
same here:(
I am bit confused over seasonal reversal of wind question
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Features/AmazonLAI/amazon_lai3.php
this line is clearly mentioned in each and every ncert of geography from 6-12th(that seasonal reversal of winds is known as monsoon even u can find it in 6th ncert) so there is no need to go in much technicalities because upsc is not intrested in knowing what other sources are saying but it definately intrested in what ncert are saying so don’t be confused.
kindly provide the details for preparation of world history and ethics and integrity paper.
Great work sir as always .
Sir
Thankyou for all the help. You are one of the important reasons why I most probably will get through prelims.
Any strategy/time-frame advice regarding mains? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Yours sincerely.
Oh. And the new theme and the blue (plus) button are god-sent. PIB is just a click away from my homepage now!
Sir,
answer of soil erosion?

Lagta h is baar “mujhse na ho Paega”!!!
is it worth buying CrackIAS notes for mains 2014 … is their claim of 81 questions from their notes only, factually correct or not.
Thanks in Advance !! :-)
en notes ko kewal ek baar padhne ka koi matlab nahi hai…2-4 baar padhne ka time nahi bacha hai…man ki tasalli ke liye khareedlo
It is a sham.A waste.
@ sachin– > what these new coaching institutes are doing now a days-
after exam they inserted Upsc Q in the soft copies of their material – take print out and says 81 or 95 Q are directly from our notes.
Be cautious from such institutes…!!!
To buy any notes is waste now cz we dont have time to read those now…moreover I always found many such false claims in Old rajinder nagar…its ALWAYS BETTER to invest our time in standard books and govt websites, PDF’s-documents…UPSC hardly asks anything outside of govt websites in mains…if possible buy that case studies booklet of crackias and its only for practice…
What do you mean by govt websites in mains???
Regarding bhadrachalam sarees ,
http://www.world66.com/asia/southasia/india/andhrapradesh/bhadrachalam/shopping
Rajmundry sarees are famous and have royal heritage , but do not find much on Internet, so I guess I might be wrong , but well the word traditional is important, and that particular area is home of silk weaver community.
@mrunal sir
I am not receiving e-mails after you upgraded your website. Pls look into the matter as many others are facing the same problem.
Sir, I mean atleast in yes or no
Thanks alot Sir
sir pls publish economy…finish the key i m waiting for it…nw its 2nd week
my sore is 180 will i be able to qualify in OBC category? pllz tell me
nope..try again next time..obc around 190-200
Communist, if your predicting cutoffs….general category ka bhi kar hi do
most institutes are predicting in the range of 205 to 220. So, if you are scoring above 210 (after excluding the marks of doubtfuls like Avanti, associated with Planning , transgenic crops, soil erosion, statutory reserve ratios and RC’s in paper 2.) you have a decent chance
hi natasha& deepinder..we need to stop fooling our fellow friends..any player who has been in this field for about 2-3 years can easily say that the cutoffs are definitely going to come down coz 1.exam was out of 385 marks 2. csat was definitely lengthy as compared to last year as no questions on decision making=> all questions had negative marking..so scores of most candidates who have given mains previously with scores of >260 last year have come down to 230-240=> lower by 25-30 marks
so we can extrapolate that to safely assume 215-220 for gen category this year and not lower..so obc as always will be around 20 marks lower=> 195-200 sc/st=> 170-180
I dont want to demoralise ankush or anyone else here but at 180 in obc he has a very slim chance..I dont want ankush to waste this precious time till results..rather prepare for other exams like ssc/ibps/rbi etc..coz i have known people who persist unnecessarily with upsc by being over optimistic about their score and lose out on other good opportunities of employment..cracking any other exam will do a lot of good to ones confidence to take upsc next year..i hope i have not offended you with my reply..all the best:)
How did you decide to reduce 25 – 30 marks?
Few Assumptions and scenario:
CSAT being lengthy and even senior player would have felt the time crunch.
46 questions in GS paper 1 was kind off Difficult, Confusing/multiple select, Tempting/gut feeling Oriented(Even for senior Player).
Case1: If senior decide not to answer those 46 questions, in that case even with 80~90% accuracy, he will score only 86~93 marks in GS paper 1
Other senior cum smart will land up mush lesser that this.
Considering similar possible scenario, Cut-off should be 190 to 200 for General. It should not go beyond.
Praveen has a fair chance:)
Ankush bhai, kich pata nahi. You do stand a chance and with keys varying so much one can’t say anything. So please keep working for mains.None is an expert here, much less communist.
thank u so much sir
but my bad luck i hv not filled ny other form this year
hoping fr the best else i’ll tkae some job nd prepare side byside
plzz suggest me some options i am btech mechanical(nit kurukshetra)
