Although Danny usually underestimates the power of Bollywood heros but when it comes to CSAT, he crams NCERTs religiously
| 1.Glacial cycle | Medium. By common understanding both responsible but a player would hesitate before ticking in haste. |
| 2.Seasonal wind reversal | Easy. Verbatim answer in NCERT |
| 1.Changpa | Difficult. Because hard to memorize location and occupation of all tribes across India. |
| 2.Saree | Easy-to-medium depending on your taste for such economic geography factoids. |
| 3.Arunanchal rivers |
|
| 4. Hills & coasts | Same as above |
| 5.Highways | Difficult to recall three different national highways and their locations. |
| 6. 10 degree channel | Easy. Verbatim answer in NCERT |

[Act 1] Answerkey: Physical Geography
Q1: Evolution vs Glacial cycles
Which of the following phenomena might have influenced the evolution of organisms?
- Continental drift
- Glacial cycles
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2.
Continental drift: 200 million years ago, that large continent Pangaea starts breaking up. Last Glacial cycle ended 15000 years ago. And as per the Geological timeline-table given in TMH, page 50-51, there were signs of evolution at both stages. Therefore, both events “might” have influenced the evolution. Anyways, for solid reference:
| Continental drift | One of the most prominent example of the effect of continental drift on evolution of organisms, is the unique primates found in Australia and South America. Ref.Google book#1 |
| Glacial cycle | The final stages of evolution of Genus Homo occurs in the last 3 glacial cycles. Ref google book#2 |
Therefore, answer C Both 1 and 2 correct.
Q2: Seasonal wind reversal
The seasonal reversal of winds is the typical characteristic of
- Equatorial climate
- Mediterranean climate
- Monsoon climate
- All of the above climates
Answer C because
- Class11 India Physical, Chapter 4 page 33: Monsoon connotes the climate associated with seasonal reversal in the direction of winds.=> Either C or D
- I couldnot find a source that says Equatorial climate involves “Seasonal reversal of Wind”=> D is eliminated, and we are left with “C”.
[Act 2] India Eco/Human Geography
Q1: Changpa people
With reference to ‘Changpa’ community of India, consider the following statement:
- They live mainly in the State of Uttarakhand.
- They rear the Pashmina goats that yield a fine wool.
- They are kept in the category of Scheduled Tribes.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- Lists Changpa under ST category from Jammu Kashmir.
- This means #1 is wrong and #3 is right. This eliminates A and D.
- Now everything depends on whether #2 is right or wrong.
- Pashmina: The Kashmir Shawl and Beyond follows the origin of the fibre right to the Changra goats, which are specially reared by the nomadic Changpa tribes of Ladakh, and then its refinement at the hands of the Kashmiri artisans and subsequent export and consumption by the rest of the world.
- Changpa tribe’s present population is less than 9,000, and the adverse climatic conditions which force them to keep moving 10 to 12 times a year.
- In Ladakh, merchants pay Rs.1,200 to 1,500 for a kilogram of raw Pashmina
Therefore, #2 is right hence answer B: 2 and 3 correct.
Counterview:
Question says “Pashmina goats”, but Hindu says “Changra goats”. And goats don’t give ‘wool’. Ans. Well, Tehlaka.com connects the dots:
- This area is also known as Rupsho Valley where the main occupation of the nomads is rearing yaks and Changra goats.
- The unforgiving winter makes the goats grow extremely warm and soft veneer, which is six times finer than human hair and is used to make Pashmina wool.
Therefore Changra goats = Pashmina wool. Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Saree Towns
Consider the following towns of India:
- Bhadrachalam
- Chanderi
- Kancheepuram
- Karnal
Which of the above are famous for the production of traditional sarees / fabric?
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- 1, 3 and 4
#2 is right because official Madhya Pradesh Ashoknagar district website
- “Chanderi is a tehsil of Ashoknagar district ..main occupation of the people of Chanderi is handicraft. Chanderi sarees are famous all over the world”
- This fact is frequently asked in MP PCS exams, and eliminates Option D
#3 Kancheepuram is right by common knowledge, but for the sake of reference- Silk board of India
- temple towns like Kancheepuram are renowned for their magnificent heavy silk sarees of bright colours with silver or gold zari works
- This eliminates Option A.
| Bhadrachalam | Disputed village during separation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. I did not find any source that say it’s famous for saree. |
| Karnal | Was in news because some of its villages will be included in NCR (National capital region). While it’s infamous for low sex ratio and female infanticide, I did not find any source that says it’s famous for saree. |
Therefore, Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
[Act 2] India Map/location
Side note: I’ve counted wildlife sanctuary location questions under environment.
Q1: Rivers of Arunanchal Pradesh
1. Consider the following rivers:
- Barak
- Lohit
- Subansiri
Which of the above flows / flow through Arunachal Pradesh?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Barak: Arunanchal Pradesh is wrong because
| NCERT |
|
| INDIA YEAR BOOK 2014 | Page 3 of – in third para-“The barak river , the head stream of Meghna rises in the hills in Manipur” |
Therefore, statement #1 is wrong, this automatically eliminates A, C and D. We are left with answer (B) 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Hills and Coasts
Consider these pairs
| 1. Cardamom Hills | Coromandel Coast |
| 2. Kaimur Hills | Konkan Coast |
| 3. Mahadeo Hills | Central India |
| 4. Mikir Hills | North-East India |
Which of the above pairs are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2
- 2 and 3
- 3 and 4
- 2 and 4
NCERT Class11 India Physical:
- Refer to figure 2.2 on page10 of the same book. You can see Kaimur hills is in central highlands, far away from Konkan Coast.
- Therefore, pair #2 is wrong, this eliminates option A, B and D. Thus we are left with answer C.
Alternate references

Q3: Highways
| National Highway | Cities connected |
|---|---|
| 1. NH 4 | Chennai and Hyderabad |
| 2. NH 6 | Mumbai and Kolkata |
| 3. NH 15 | Ahmedabad and Jodhpur |
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- None
| NH4: | Thane to Chennai via Pune belgaum Hubli Banglore and Ranipet ; |
| NH6: | Dhule to Kolkatta via Nagpur- Raipur- sambalpur |
| NH15: | Pathnkot and kandla via Amritsar- Ganganagar- jaisalmer. |
Therefore answer D all wrong. Ref

Q4: 10-Degree Channel
Which one of the following pairs of islands is separated from each other by the ‘Ten Degree Channel’?
- Andaman and Nicobar
- Nicobar and Sumatra
- Maldives and Lakshadweep
- Sumatra and Java
NCERT Class11 India Physical, page 19: “The Andaman in the north and the Nicobar in the south are separated by a water body called 10 degree channel”. Therefore, answer A.

Q1: Turkey Location

- Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea
- Gulf of Suez and Mediterranean Sea

Ans- B- Black sea and Mediterranean Sea, Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas 2nd edition 2014.
Q2: Cities of SE.Asia
What is the correct sequence of occurrence of the following cities in South-East Asia as one proceeds from south to north? 1.Bangkok 2.Hanoi 3.Jakarta 4.Singapore Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 4-2-1-3
- 3-2-4-1
- 3-4-1-2
- 4-3-2-1

Ans- C (From south to north) Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas. For more answerkeys, visit Mrunal.org/answerkeys.

Superb analysis!
hi Frnz…
just want to vent out my anger regarding blaring noise which has been disturbing my peace of mind. In my locality , some showoff goons keep singing bhajans (n ofcourse in the unbearable tone, ear piercing voice…just imagine the torture!!!)throughout night without any pious occasion. I sincerely believe in praying but without disturbing others peace of mind. As per regulations, blaring loudspeakers are not permissible between 10 pm to 6 am.But these people take joy in doing so. I dropped no. of mails to the district administration, called police station and wrote letters to the local daily. But one can easily guess, any entertainment to such grievances is far from being acknowledged.
Its cold here.I am draped in shawl with ears stuffed with cotton. But still sch endeavors could not immune me to their irritating unbearable songs. For me peaceful environment is prerequisite for study.
Had i been a guy , i wud have taken my bike , followed the direction of noise and wud have seriously pleaded to redress my concern with these loudspeaker party. !!! Lolzzz..
n ys… ab bhajan over n bollywood gana shuru..wo bhi besuraaaa…. aaaaa Goddd!!! Oooo Bollywoooddd!!! Save me!!
Can somebody suggest any remedy?
Regards
Noise cancellation earphones might help, :)
Lolzzz…!! thnx…gr8 !dea…
hw about scientist inventing a gene which cud b voluntarily switchd on / off by a prsn as per his/her requirement of listening to anyone… ;)
hahha, that will solve majority of the problems of this world. :p ,
Noise cancellation head phone only cancel high frequency tones and most of the noise…You can only listen to people, music and stuff..no noise….i use it in my lab….
Use Ear Plug which comes around 80Rupee can reduce upto 90% of noise..
Join the Bhajan party for few days and influence their thinking from within. You may pick some cultural GK for next prelim ;)
when I faced such issues, I used to call 100 at 2200 hrs..sharp..and they used to ensure that everything was in order.
Feeling the same hell here…..I think listening to the our loveable songs may reduse our anger……I adopted it….it doesn’t look as good solution but it can at least reduse my anger……and watching our portion related videos helps….in not wasting our time……
u can file an RTI to find out why your previous complaints were not heard and how much time it would take to redress your grievance.
i wud suggest to write an email to cj of ur high court about the matter.
About UPSC and how it treats it’s lovers….Charles Bukowski says…”Find what you love and let it kill you..”….
@natasha the statement could be metamorphosed… “Find ur love and rise in love with it ” :)
guys please please respond to question of common myna. is the answer common myna or common myna and painted stork both?
boss….common myna is correct……focus on mains
painted stork eats fish…lives near ponds, lakes….mostly…..so only myna
It is common myna and crane…just wait and see in the upcoming results…
Question has more to do with the distribution, only common myna find across india.. painted stork not sure that only in parts near Uttarakhand.. sadly ShankarIas guy who wrote a book on that didn’t get it!
The answer is “Only Common Myna”. I am a birder. Let me explain. The correct answer to this question was, “Cattle Egret”. But for some strange reasons, UPSC has not put that in options. At least an Egret could have done. Yes they are those white birds we call “baghula” in Hindi. They follow cattle to pick up ticks that are disturbed. Common Myna or the Indian Myna is another ubiquitous species that also exhibits this behaviour but in general you don’t see it stalking the cattle as the Egret does. Now coming to other options, Storks are fish eating species and the Black-necked Cranes which do eat invertebrates do not stalk cattle at all.
By remove village they meant a bird that exists everywhere in India, nothing to do with what they eat.. seriously. . U guys think UPSC ll hit such low lecels?? Whether thy eat fish or insects? It is about distribution, stork and that crane are only in himalayan region.. only bird u can see in every village is common myna..
what the visually blind people should do for such kind of questions…
only common myna…and go ahead
According to me Painted stork and myna both as both of them eat insects. People are mistaken that painted stork doesn’t eat insects. Just search painted stork eating insects on google and you will see the results.
its only common myna

Someone guide what should be the strategy for economics in mains. pls show some enlightening path to kaivalya :-).
ashtangika marg……yeh sab mohmaya hai….
for GS eco or eco optional?
for GS eco!
Refer motivational section of toppers in web. They have written how they did it and how one should do it. Time is very less so you need to wind up and write up very imp topics and questions’ answers. Sit with stop clock and record ur time of writing answers. Ncert macro, indian economy, peopl and economy, and ramesh singh will be backbone for static topics. Economic survey, budget etc is imp too. And you need to really work out with current affairs concerning national and international major economic happenings. Stay away from mishra puri, sundaram books.
Please help me in culture section. Most of toppers have left it and ncert is ok ok type. I am very bad in it :(
Refer topper Gaurav’s blog, he has given some of his culture docs.

Seasonal Reversal of winds is the characteristic of all the three climates mentioned. Monsoon is obvious, Equatorial, you know as pressure belts shift, the direction of winds also changes at 0 degree latitude and Mediterranean climate is just reverse of monsoon so it is obviously correct.

VAJIRAM N RAVI IS PREDICTING THE GENERAL CUT OFF AT 185-195……LAST YEAR ALSO THEY HAD PREDICTED AROUND 240……
What? Yesterday my friend went there. He told Vajiram is predicting in 215 to 220 range for UR. Now why on earth it fell down? :O… Yeh toh share market ho gaya hai. kal ka bjav 215 aaj ka 185 :p
I guess sampke size is varying. Clear ias is conducting one poll. Though some have inflated theie score but majority aroumd 70 percent out of 2000 are polling in 205 to 210 range. I believe open category will fall around it only in plus minus 5 range.
I surely believe upsc guys enjoys a lot after reading all cut off prediction.
i also went there they said in the range of 215-220
what a ridiculous prediction.
