[Act 1] Answerkey: Physical Geography
Q1: Evolution vs Glacial cycles
Which of the following phenomena might have influenced the evolution of organisms?
- Continental drift
- Glacial cycles
Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2.
Continental drift: 200 million years ago, that large continent Pangaea starts breaking up. Last Glacial cycle ended 15000 years ago. And as per the Geological timeline-table given in TMH, page 50-51, there were signs of evolution at both stages. Therefore, both events “might” have influenced the evolution. Anyways, for solid reference:
| Continental drift | One of the most prominent example of the effect of continental drift on evolution of organisms, is the unique primates found in Australia and South America. Ref.Google book#1 |
| Glacial cycle | The final stages of evolution of Genus Homo occurs in the last 3 glacial cycles. Ref google book#2 |
Therefore, answer C Both 1 and 2 correct.
Q2: Seasonal wind reversal
The seasonal reversal of winds is the typical characteristic of
- Equatorial climate
- Mediterranean climate
- Monsoon climate
- All of the above climates
Answer C because
- Class11 India Physical, Chapter 4 page 33: Monsoon connotes the climate associated with seasonal reversal in the direction of winds.=> Either C or D
- I couldnot find a source that says Equatorial climate involves “Seasonal reversal of Wind”=> D is eliminated, and we are left with “C”.
[Act 2] India Eco/Human Geography
Q1: Changpa people
With reference to ‘Changpa’ community of India, consider the following statement:
- They live mainly in the State of Uttarakhand.
- They rear the Pashmina goats that yield a fine wool.
- They are kept in the category of Scheduled Tribes.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- Lists Changpa under ST category from Jammu Kashmir.
- This means #1 is wrong and #3 is right. This eliminates A and D.
- Now everything depends on whether #2 is right or wrong.
- Pashmina: The Kashmir Shawl and Beyond follows the origin of the fibre right to the Changra goats, which are specially reared by the nomadic Changpa tribes of Ladakh, and then its refinement at the hands of the Kashmiri artisans and subsequent export and consumption by the rest of the world.
- Changpa tribe’s present population is less than 9,000, and the adverse climatic conditions which force them to keep moving 10 to 12 times a year.
- In Ladakh, merchants pay Rs.1,200 to 1,500 for a kilogram of raw Pashmina
Therefore, #2 is right hence answer B: 2 and 3 correct.
Counterview:
Question says “Pashmina goats”, but Hindu says “Changra goats”. And goats don’t give ‘wool’. Ans. Well, Tehlaka.com connects the dots:
- This area is also known as Rupsho Valley where the main occupation of the nomads is rearing yaks and Changra goats.
- The unforgiving winter makes the goats grow extremely warm and soft veneer, which is six times finer than human hair and is used to make Pashmina wool.
Therefore Changra goats = Pashmina wool. Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Saree Towns
Consider the following towns of India:
- Bhadrachalam
- Chanderi
- Kancheepuram
- Karnal
Which of the above are famous for the production of traditional sarees / fabric?
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- 1, 3 and 4
#2 is right because official Madhya Pradesh Ashoknagar district website
- “Chanderi is a tehsil of Ashoknagar district ..main occupation of the people of Chanderi is handicraft. Chanderi sarees are famous all over the world”
- This fact is frequently asked in MP PCS exams, and eliminates Option D
#3 Kancheepuram is right by common knowledge, but for the sake of reference- Silk board of India
- temple towns like Kancheepuram are renowned for their magnificent heavy silk sarees of bright colours with silver or gold zari works
- This eliminates Option A.
| Bhadrachalam | Disputed village during separation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. I did not find any source that say it’s famous for saree. |
| Karnal | Was in news because some of its villages will be included in NCR (National capital region). While it’s infamous for low sex ratio and female infanticide, I did not find any source that says it’s famous for saree. |
Therefore, Answer B: 2 and 3 only.
[Act 2] India Map/location
Side note: I’ve counted wildlife sanctuary location questions under environment.
Q1: Rivers of Arunanchal Pradesh
1. Consider the following rivers:
- Barak
- Lohit
- Subansiri
Which of the above flows / flow through Arunachal Pradesh?
- 1 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Barak: Arunanchal Pradesh is wrong because
| NCERT |
|
| INDIA YEAR BOOK 2014 | Page 3 of – in third para-“The barak river , the head stream of Meghna rises in the hills in Manipur” |
Therefore, statement #1 is wrong, this automatically eliminates A, C and D. We are left with answer (B) 2 and 3 only.
Q2: Hills and Coasts
Consider these pairs
| 1. Cardamom Hills | Coromandel Coast |
| 2. Kaimur Hills | Konkan Coast |
| 3. Mahadeo Hills | Central India |
| 4. Mikir Hills | North-East India |
Which of the above pairs are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2
- 2 and 3
- 3 and 4
- 2 and 4
NCERT Class11 India Physical:
- Refer to figure 2.2 on page10 of the same book. You can see Kaimur hills is in central highlands, far away from Konkan Coast.
- Therefore, pair #2 is wrong, this eliminates option A, B and D. Thus we are left with answer C.

- Page 10 Oxford student atlas 2nd edition 2014.
Q3: Highways
| National Highway | Cities connected |
|---|---|
| 1. NH 4 | Chennai and Hyderabad |
| 2. NH 6 | Mumbai and Kolkata |
| 3. NH 15 | Ahmedabad and Jodhpur |
Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2 only
- 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
- None
| NH4: | Thane to Chennai via Pune belgaum Hubli Banglore and Ranipet ; |
| NH6: | Dhule to Kolkatta via Nagpur- Raipur- sambalpur |
| NH15: | Pathnkot and kandla via Amritsar- Ganganagar- jaisalmer. |
Therefore answer D all wrong. Ref

Q4: 10-Degree Channel
Which one of the following pairs of islands is separated from each other by the ‘Ten Degree Channel’?
- Andaman and Nicobar
- Nicobar and Sumatra
- Maldives and Lakshadweep
- Sumatra and Java
NCERT Class11 India Physical, page 19: “The Andaman in the north and the Nicobar in the south are separated by a water body called 10 degree channel”. Therefore, answer A.

Q1: Turkey Location
Turkey is located between
- Black Sea and Caspian Sea
- Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea
- Gulf of Suez and Mediterranean Sea
- Gulf of Aqaba and Dead Sea

Ans- B- Black sea and Mediterranean Sea, Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas 2nd edition 2014.
Q2: Cities of SE.Asia
What is the correct sequence of occurrence of the following cities in South-East Asia as one proceeds from south to north? 1.Bangkok 2.Hanoi 3.Jakarta 4.Singapore Select the correct answer using the code given below.
- 4-2-1-3
- 3-2-4-1
- 3-4-1-2
- 4-3-2-1

Ans- C (From south to north) Reference- Page 55 of Oxford Student atlas. For more answerkeys, visit Mrunal.org/answerkeys.

Can anyone please clarify if Indian constitution has been amended 98 times then why recent bill proposing change in appointment of Judges is being sometimes refer to as 121st amendment. This may be trivial question to ask but I really want to know.
The judges bill is 121st constitution amendment bill. Not constitution amendment. i.e., every time the bill to amend constitution may not result in passage of bill. Many CA bills have been lapsed in the past. That’s why it is 121st CA bill.
JAC Bill is 121st Amendment Bill so its only a proposal until passed by both houses and signed by president. In this case JAC has been passed by Parliament and pending with President. After receiving presidential assent it will become 99th Amendment Act .Means (121-99)=23 bills have either lapsed or have not been passed by both the houses separately as Joint Sitting isnt allowed for an Amendment bill.

yes Constitution amended only 98 time… but constitution bill presented 121 times in Parliament. Bill passed only 98 times and got president assent to become constitutional amendment. and other it would not passed. Don’t confuse with ACT and Bill.
Nice analysis. After going through i am sure that there is no end. In study for UPSC exams.Great site.Thanks.any idea about cutoff score.
chandramani jee sir mention books ncert it isnew orold book which one is.
what will be the cut off like this time.
Hi mrunal, thanks for all the freebies!!
Also, i love the new style-very ergonomic and new links!!
in referance to monsoon winds wala ques…………south west monsoonal winds flow over the equator in south to north direction…and 4 months later north east monsoons flow in north to south direction over the equator……….in short seasonal reversal of winds…….this is what i feel!!!pure logic,no source..
yeah …due to shift in itcz….seasonal shift in equitorial region. :)
Highway numbers question : The highway numbers-routes mentioned here are according to old numbering. NHAI revised them some 4-5 years ago. Now they are numbered according to geographical locations. Like, if it is running horizontally(East-West) in the nation it is ‘odd’ numbered, and if it is running vertically(North-South) it is ‘even’ numbered. So based on given locations mostly are vertical routes on map which should be even numbered. I suppose elimination should work. Correct me if i am wrong!
But the last line second section of wikipedia says
“The new numbering system has caused too much confusion and the ministry has decided to stick to the old numbers”..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Highways_in_India
There is no doubt about seasonal reversal of winds in monsoon and Mediterranean climates. In equatorial region with seasonal shift in ITCZ the winds from subtropical high pressure belt of the other hemisphere cross equator and under the effect of coriolis force they deflect right/left according to those being in northern/southern hemisphere. This gives seasonal reversal of winds in equatorial climate as well eg. When thermal equator is southwards the winds from subtropical high of northern hemisphere move northeast to southwest while when thermal equator is northwards
When thermal equator is extreme northwards the winds from subtropical high of southern hemisphere crosses equator and under coriolis force deflect right in northern hemisphere and thus flow southwest to northeast.
P.S. doldrum coincide thermal equator and not real equator.
No doubt Mediterranean also witness this reversal but the word “Typical characteristic” is the catch in the question. Seasonal reversal of wind is typical characteristic of monsoon climate only.
I too marked it as d, anyways.
All climate types have some Typical Characteristics
1. Mediterranean Climate= Warm summers and Rainy mild winters
2. Monsoon Climate = Seasonal reversal of winds
3. Savannah Climate= definite dry and wet seasons
etc etc
UPSC asked in this context, and we all fell in that trap. Bad day i guess . :/
Indeed Masterchief.
For those who still doubt it go through this National geographic link to avoid confusion. I remember there was one question in economics article explaining budget concept by mrunal. In it he showed how excessive analysis may spoil choices sometimes( Sorry not able to recall it). Ans is Monsoon only. I have looked over 15 google books, 10-15 websites including nptel, cec videos, ngc, british official weather education website and Iowa univ climate notes. All have given what you have written here. Only Monsoon has ‘typical’ seasonal reversal of winds climate.
http://education.nationalgeographic.com/education/encyclopedia/climate/?ar_a=1
absolutely rite……but fortunately I dint…..;)
very right. word typical is important here .moreover, though reversal of winds is the typical characterstic of mansooon climate, but these convective currents must be originated due to differential heating and cooling of land and water and thermal variations, which is not the case with mediterrranean ( westerly during winter and north east trade during summer).
Thanks Arpita,
you have raised a valid point and may be this question is asked from this angle by upsc ad they will not ask a straight question.
why Mrunal sir is not clearing this doubt.
They mostly ask straight and simple questions, but we make it complex by our knowledge and fall in the trap.
True….. I made similar mistake… Reading too much b’ween the lines… Managed to keep my self out of the mains list :-(
Last year
I too have marked “d” by same logic but after discussing with many friends and researching myself I came to the conclusion that its not reversal of wind in case of med climate its just shifting of pressure belt and med region comes under the influence of different type of wind system , in monsoon Coriolis force changes the direction of wind itself when it comes from southern hemisphere to northern hemisphere , though I am not very much convinced by this logic as in any case if I am in med region I would experience reversal of wind be it by change of pressure belt but as Mrunal says that its written verbatim in NCERT that med type of climate does not experience reversal of wind (though have not cross checked it) so I guess that put every doubt aside (but I guess we should cross check that before coming to any final conclusion).
215 general category any chance???????
@mrunal. Barak is a main river of Assam. infact the three district mainly cachar karimganj &hailakandi are known as the Barak valley. even if it flows through manipur and Mizoram it is not substantial.
There two things winds and climate.. climate is region specific doesn’t matter by which wind system reversal is caused be it monsoon winds easterlies or westerlies.. the question is about climate not wind system..
Climate of a place is influenced by the wind systems only.
All climate types have some Typical Characteristics
1. Mediterranean Climate= Warm summers and Rainy mild winters
2. Monsoon Climate = Seasonal reversal of winds
3. Savannah Climate= definite dry and wet seasons
4. Equatorial Climate= small annual temperature range and rainfall uniformly in each month of the year
etc etc
i HOPE you are correct, i will gain 2.66. :D
