Structure is Review Officer Exam?

• It is a non-interview exam, selection based on written score only.
• Exam has two stages: prelim + mains
• Prelim stage Contains two papers

GA/GK Syllabus coverage runs parallel to SSC CGL but difficulty level is bit easier than SSC CGL’s GA/GK questions.	Hindi Vocabulary and grammar. Check the attached paper and you’ll get the idea.

• The structure/skeleton is similar to CAPF (Assistant commandant exam). Majority of questions from general studies and a few question from maths+reasoning.
• Topicwise breakup is somewhat similar to UPSC prelims of early 2000 -in the sense that major emphasis used to be on History and Geography.
• Question difficulty level bit easier than SSC CGL. But there is a sharp difference: SSC-CGL gives special focus on science, this one doesn’t.
• Economy is entirely current affairs based.
• History is GK based.
• Maths-reasoning is very basic level. (Walk in the park compared to CGL/IBPS).

Anyways, let’s see how to approach individual topics:

History

Can be further classified into:

Ancient	Buddhism, Jainism, Harappa, Asoka, Maurya etc
Medieval	Delhi sultanate, Mughals etc.
Modern	British raj, freedom struggle.
Culture	Various religion, caves, paintings, classical music, dance

In the review officer, the History MCQs are Mostly GK type. In terms of cost benefit ratio, priority order=Modern > Ancient > Medieval.

For Modern History (British Raj, Freedom struggle,) don’t waste time on NCERT because they don’t cover the GK related to various congress sessions, contribution of freedom fighters or dates etc. Therefore, directly prepare Modern History with any one of the following depending on your convenience:

1. Lucent General knowledge book
2. Spectrum’s Brief History of Modern India OR
3. General Studies Manual (if you already have it. There is no need to specifically buy it for this exam)

but don’t waste time on minute details.

Another high priority area is Uttar Pradesh’s Geography (+ CENSUS 2011). Prepare following things:

• Physical geography of UP e.g. rivers, tributaries, hills, soil types, rainfall in various regions.
• GK related to districts
  • Total # of many districts?
  • biggest and smallest district in terms of area and population
  • Which district was formed/renamed recently?
• Economic geography of UP
  • Famous cities/towns for handicraft, manufacturing etc.
  • location of mineral deposits
  • thermal and nuclear power stations
  • major crops and crop producing areas
  • New initiatives regarding solar energy etc.
• +location of Divisional HQs of Railways, army etc.
• Important state / central government institutions, famous old colleges, important centers of freedom struggle etc.

• Official syllabus doesn’t talk about physical geography. Even in earlier exam, barely 1-2 questions from topics associated with physical geography. So, There is not much point in preparing this topic in detail.
• Still if you have time and want to prepare, then go through the NCERTs. (download folder @bottom, already contains separate zip file for physical geography).

1. Read Indian polity by M.Laxmikanth. For Hindi medium, the same book is available under the title “Bharat ki Rajyavyavstha, M.Laxmikanth”.
2. India Yearbook chapter number 3 and 20. (You don’t need to specifically buy the latest edition for Review Officer, just use India 2011 PDF-its Free download link given @bottom)

Here are some tips on how to Laxmikanth’s book efficiently and get a good grip over the polity within a short period of time?

Don’t study the book in a linear fashion (that is chapter 1,2,3,4…sequence)

Instead I suggest you read the book in following direction:

1. First you read the chapter on President, Vice President and immediately move to the chapter on governor. Then read on Emergency provisions.
2. Read chapter on PM and cabinet, then move to CM and state council of Ministers.
3. Chapter on “Parliamentary system” and then directly to parliament, but after budget topic is done pause this chapter and move to on CAG. Then come back and resume the chapter on parliament.
4. Once parliament is finished, move to State legislative assembly.
5. Supreme Court and then High court, tribunals.
6. Attorney Gen =>Advocate General
7. UPSC  =>State PSC
8. Finance Commission =>Planning Commission=>Nat.Development council
9. Now Centre State relation and Interstate relations.
10. Election Commission=> chapter on election, Anti-defection
11. All the National Commissions on Women, SC, ST,OBC, CVC, Lokpal and so on.

Once ^this is done. Move to

1. Citizenship, Fundamental rights, DPSP, duties.
2. Amendment of Constitution=> preamble
3. Jammu Kashmir => Scheduled and Tribal Areas.
4. UT, Panchayati Raj, municipalities

After ^this is done. Read whatever chapters are remaining. Ultimately

Above topics are important for SSC-CGL, CDS and CAT but rarely asked in other exams- particularly in State PCS recruitments.

Reasoning

• in the earlier exam, they’ve asked very basic level rasoning questions, from number-sequence series, coding-decoding, direction based test + non-verbal reasoning.
• the Recommended Book is as usual: RS Aggarwal’s Modern Approach to verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Then the question is, how to prepare reasoning in systematic manner in the given time? Do it in following manner:

Chart based

• This includes: Direction sense test, Sitting arrangement (rectangle, circular, building, lecture schedules etc.) and blood relations.
• I club them together because in all of them you’ve to make rough diagram / chart / table to solve it.
• Here is the order in which they should be prepared:

Misc.GK / Person in News (PIN)/ Sports/ Award

Your primary focus area should be those static topics (History, polity, geography, science) because

1. cost: benefit ratio of static portion is good
2. You don’t need to tick 100% questions to clear the prelims
3. There is no end to Misc.GK/PIN etc.

But that doesn’t mean, you should totally skip Misc.GK because many of such questions in review officer can be solved by following the conventional news coverage. Observe the questions from earlier exam:

• Continue updating the details in the MS Word file and revise it often.

Hindi Grammar, Vocabulary Paper (60m)

• So far in this article, we saw how to approach General studies + aptitude=total 140 questions.
• But apart from that, you’ll have to face a separate Hindi paper for 60 questions. The 2010’s prelim paper given @bottom. Go through its question.
• You’ll see that MCQs are based on Grammar and vocabulary of Hindi.
• Also observe that “instruction page” of the question paper doesn’t mention anything about negative marking (=meaning you should tick all answers)
• Do the class 10 guide/digest/grammar book from UP State education board. If you’ve nothing, use IGNOU’s foundation course. (free download link @bottom)
• Similarly go through Hindi grammar book/dictionary for list of idioms-phrases, synonyms-antonyms.

Piecemeal preparation =#Epicfail

• Your reading-revision should be on continuous basis until you get your dream job or permanently retire from giving competitive exams.
• But, often candidates pause their preparation in between the exams.
• for example, suppose they gave SSC CGL / SBI PO in May 2013, then for June-2013, they just wait for result, don’t study anything, thinking “result aane do, baad mein dekhenge.”
• Even if they had real difficulty in English / reasoning portion of such previous exam, still they don’t do anything…“apnaa number lag hi jaayega, why should we bother?”
• Until result is announced, they remain in the ‘vacation mood’, waste time in loitering around with friends, spending days in marriage functions of distant relatives, watching (fixed) cricket matches, surfing facebook, youtube, etc.etc.etc.
• If this candidate fails in those above exams, then he’ll not study at all, until some new exam notification comes (for example this UP review officer etc.)  He’ll not even try to analyses what went wrong and why did he fail in the earlier exam……“meri koi galti nahi thi”
• Even for new exam, he’ll start serious reading only after receiving the hallticket. He already has good collection of books/magazines but he never bothers to touch them.
• He lives in overconfidence, “I’ve prepared this GK/aptitude already in the last exam, so I know everything, bas exam ke 2-3 week pehle ek baar dekh lungaa.”
• These type of candidates never succeed in any exam. They get stuck at one stage or another, because India’s population is so high, there is always someone more desperate and hardworking for that job.

So, never underestimate the level of competition, whether it is IAS recruitment or clerk’s recruitment, whether they’ve 30 vacancies or 300 vacancies: Continuous reading, revision and practice is essential.

Science	Contains class 7 to 10 NCERT Science in three zips: physics, chemistry, biology.+NIOS Science material. (although there will be lot of overlapping)
EnB	Contains selective chapters from class 6 to 12 from science and geography textbooks that are relevant for Environment and biodiversity.+NIOS material for environment and biodiversity EnB.
