UPSC had conducted Civil service and Forest service (combined) preliminary exam aka CSAT-2014, on 24th August 2014. Here are the scanned copies of Booklet no.”C” for both papers:
In above PDF files, the text is searchable and copy-able, so you can cut-paste-search it anywhere for discussion, google-ing. For example, if you want to find out which passage was lifted from which newspaper/googlebook?

- Detailed Analysis and Topicwise Answerkeys with explanations (for all sets), coming soon.
- You’re most welcome to provide your inputs, answers, observation, analysis and experience in the comments below.
- If you want to discuss then discuss MCQs, (and not cut-offs.) Everyone who had prepared sincerely, and did not risk too much negative marking, he/she has a fair chance of clearing prelims.
- Internet user sample size too short to make any predictions. So don’t lose blood pressure, if Mr.X, Y or Z says he ticked more MCQs than you.

I have scored around 215+-5 according to the answer keys provided by CL and Gaurav Aggarwal on his blog. This score is certainly not the best. It may be average or a below average score. However so far as the question of cut off is concerned the chances of the cut off being as high as that of last year are pretty low. Firstly, total marks are lesser in this paper as compared to the last one. Secondly, decision making questions which did not carry any negative marking are absent. Thirdly, the number of questions which required mathematical aptitude have increased. The CSAT paper required more time than the previous papers. The pressure upon the candidates to solve the questions in limited time was higher. In such circumstances the chances of error creeping in are high especially in comprehension passages. Even the General Studies paper was more factual than last year. Chances of error increase in such paper as it is difficult to memorize facts. In these circumstances, I think, we should follow the advise of Mrunal Sir. He in his wisdom has rightly pointed out that it is simply futile to discuss cut offs. Let us rather concentrate on mains believing that there are fair chances of our selection.
rightly said.
Good analysis

You have changed my attitude n aptitude for better
I’ll b indebted to you for my whole life
hi, can anyone explain Q.76 set C , value of money only would be half or the values of all things would remain constant
my score 296
Hello Mrunal,
You are doing something which is commendable and impeccable!! I have been a soporific reader of newpaper and aspire to be a MBA grad. Once I read a poem by Respected A.P.J Kalam titlled “Message” in May 2014. I was inspired to take CSAT. Though I have some command over CSAT but I have not read GS1 at all. After exam, my expected score is approx 150 (after my analysis and cross verified by CL). Is this a bad score given my story of unprepared candidate. Should I read “Meassage” again and prepare both papers this time :-)?
Please comment.
Getting around 240 plus minus 5.This time maximum cutoff would be around 220
मौत का महिना ..!!
Dear Mrunal sir Thanks for the guidance
I am preparing for the IFS and given first time Prelims and little worried about the results.
How much will the cut off for the IFS???????????
any idea about ifos marks cutoff?
very very good
regarding question on sugarcane..d is correct… the nutrient application is organic ..option says inorganic/chemical/ the spacing is more so intercropping allowed…..seed cost is less….drip irrigation used ….
regarding GEF question..
ans is “a”..as it itself does no research..it provides advice…….
About 220 (SC category)… any chance??
It’s not an intelligent Back Breaking Move …. Its pakka “Bevakuf” move by UPSC. I dont understand what type of candidates they want??
At first, why they changed prelims pattern in 2011?
was it to produce the candidates better than before???
” A man who plays chess very well, may not be a good intelligent in life. U can practice and become good player.”
” You can solve the problems of age, a,b,c,d,.. ganta… , cards, data interpretations, by practicing 2 months. Then whats the use in it. “you will become well trained, Not well educated”. For GS you have to prepare literally everything under the sun, but for second paper , what??
“what do you want to prove… then keep the two papers in continuous 3 hours, then you will get the right candidates who can maintain gs and Aptitude simultaneously.”
After preparing for GS that much, You want to give questions like bull shit.
Whats the use to remember those programme names like”water shed management ganta gantaa…..kya log oo seekh khe gar mein banaayega kya??
i really don’t understand?? what it will show?? Why we need to mug up conservation and programmes, u can ask about basics…. first why did u included Forest services in this. if so, why u have mentioned ” Not required specialization”.
Didn’t you find any questions which can reasonably test candidates basic preparations??
Ganta varaha avatar on ganta rock…. on ganta mount abu…. but its not that avatar,,, another avatar… whats this??
what do u want from us?? mugup every inscription on rock?? what u wanna test??
Really its not the way to select the candidates… In this way, candidates will get selected on trials ….. cause Most of the students making plans for Second paper Not for GS # Your Purpose of exam defeated.
Lost respect for UPSC really. But don’t think it is back breaking move… Its a Bevakoof move!!
I know that feeling bro :(.. didnt expect this kind of paper from UPSC..
@Mrunal
Can you tell me how to get that ticking clock ?
free countdown timer
http://sourceforge.net/projects/countdowntimer/
Can I change my center in mains I know it was mentioned tht no changes wil be allowed…..but if anyone has done it in the past so just wanted to know if it is possible??
my scientific cut off prediction for general: last year highest marks in pre was 309 and lowest selected was 241 difference of 68…..so if for 1000 seats difference is 68 then for 1300 seats (approx), difference will be 20 more (68*300/1000), so last qualified candidate is 241-20=221……now reduce 15 of english, becomes 206, now there were average of 7 MCQs of decision making, worth 17.5 marks, assuming that one was getting full 17.5 in previous yrs and this year will be in deficit of (17.5/2= approx 8 marks), cut off comes further down to 206-8=198…..paper 2 had more math so non-science guys will loose and cut off will be down by further 5 marks so now it becomes 198-5=193….now reduce 10 marks more due to toughness of paper 1, now cut off remains 193-10=183 only, panic due to lack of time creates negative marking very quickly, reduce 15 more, now it is 183-15=168…..now if i assume that every year one becomes genius by 20 marks than cut off comes to 168+20=188 for GENERAL, for OBC it will be 20 less—188-20=168……….hope I am proven right
Bhai,,,Itna kyon sochta hai tu hona haoga ho jayega clear nahi to nahi…Simple..
Hi rahul brother, exam kaisa gya
are vijay bhai…i think,ur analysis is having some flaws because nobody knows the exact highest marks in csp 2013..i know one guy scored 338…according to forum ias…but the paper was relativelty on tougher side…to expecting a drop of atleast 10 marks…so 241-15(for english passage)-10(due to toughness)~215+ would be a safe score according to me…
i dunno wat will happen but i loved reading this..
2 noteworthy points-1. panic factor- not much in agreement with it n if its at cost of 15 marks i just give Absolute veto- but i njoyed reading.
2) next gen getting genius- here 20 marks sm hw offset the 15 marks deducted in the abv mentioned point- holistically feasible.
p.s -no offences!!
I agree with you……
Kya dimaag ladaye vivek bhai, maanna padega ! Aapka research fit raha to mai bhi mains ke darshan kar loonga pehli bar !
@vivek.. Bhai tune mera pre clear kara diya…. now going for main… YES i am in.
Bullshit calculation…… Bro, jaise jaise marks kum hote hain waise waise har ek number pe candidates jyada hote jaate hain..
And this time paper LEVEL.
Paper-1 is easy as compared to 2013,so many ssc type or non-upsc type simple questions.
paper-2 . was very easy in 2013, even below clerk standard. Now, in 2014 , paper was tough compared to 2013 but Bro, it was again easy Level. So easy score again.
But, previous cut off 241 forced everyone to go 250 for safe side==more study+ more number of students came in competition.
I am also a victim of competition.
Cut off won’t go below 230 for sure. because there is no reason to think for low cut off. This time people are scoring more because they did hard work. it may go 235+ but below 230 is IMPOSSIBLE as per current scenario , race, easy availibility of resource, more awareness of students, blah blah blah….
Paper of 2013 was very simple. Gaurav agarwal has also acknowledged this year paper more tougher than the previous one. It may be a subjective call but overall cut-off depends on entire 4.5 lk appeared, not on sample size of internet.
bro…i was aware of the marks being ‘dearer’ down the line, but there are many other things too which we should leave it for now….I was shocked since yesterday, (though I am very new in the field), then I thought sharing my logic may give some hope to start for mains to others, as it is evident that many have become just numb….my dreams are shattered till next year but seeing others do well make me happy…good luck
2013 paper 1 and paper 2 was much easier than this one, i was contemplating 260+ for last year but cutoff was 241. This year both paper were hard especially the gs paper, which was not on expected pattern from seniors point of view and they acknowledge it. Cut off will not cross 200.
Bhai maja aa gya apka analysis dekh kar…kal se tension me tha ab thodi khusi mili h…i know its temporary..but anyway its life have to live.
bhai kash tu itna dimag mains me lagane ka socha hota…..
About 220 (SC category)… any chance??… Last year i got 209 and cut off was I think 207 (just boundary condition)….pl reply..
Scoring around 184 according to cl keys. category sc. any chances of qualifying?
Don’t take CL keys seriously. So many errors in it.
vivek bhai logic tu sahe lagya dear
vaise when will mrunal post his key
My analysis of paper I:
1. The paper is an example for UPSC’s pattern uncertainty…
2. Most questions (> 35%) can be categorised under Environment, Ecology and Biodiversity (Agri included) section.
3. Paper has a complete shift from last 3 years.
4. It is more based on General Knowledge (GK) than General Studies (GS) this time.
5. 70% traditional GK questions (from pre CSAT era) and 30% traditional GS questions (from post CSAT era)
6. Bad thing= It again proposes rote-learning for future aspirants
7. Good thing= Less books to refer for prelims ( Even answers for >65% questions can be found out from TMH GS-1 book, Lucent’s General Knowledge and India Year Book)
8. It seems paper was completely designed from IFoS exam point of view.. Only keeping them in mind and to teach lesson for who tick both while filling application form without taking IFoS seriously..
9. In future it all depends on next Chairman’s mindset.. But aspirants will have hard time balancing time between Hartal/bandh/strike and preparing for both factual and analysis or concept based questions.
point 8- agreed. even i m one of them who just ticked both this time.
this paper was like a revenge from UPSC…….everybody made guesses……..no one was sure whether he is ticking a right option……..in this scenario WHITHER the real knowledge??………
What will the cut-off for SC candidates be? I am getting approximately 194. Any chance of getting call for the mains?
