last year candidates appeared- 2.71 LAKH,
THIS year candidates appeared- 4.5 LAKH, vacancy HAS INCREASED MARGINALLY.
Let me list some points which may be significant deviants in deciding cut-off this year…
1. No of candidates applied for csc this time is around 9 lakh( previous years average may be around 5 lakh).which is almost 50% increase. It has been seen that around 50% do appear for prelims. so around 5 lakh are expected this year(50% increase from previous years).
2. GS -1 paper was quite easier and scoring comparatively. Most of questions were factual and repeated ones. so expectation is that students will easily be able to score around 115-125.
3. GS- 2 paper was quite surprising Viz. long passages with inference based questions , absence of Decision Making Question, no english comprehensions . So, scoring more than 120-135 is not easy.
considering all dat its comes to me that cut-off should be around 240 to 250 and definitely not less than 230. Any ways any thing could happen in such new scenario. Wish cut-off remains below 210 because i am getting only 215.

Question says consider following statements regarding “NO CONFIDENCE MOTION” in “INDIA” and which statements below are correct?
1.there is no mention of a NCM in the constitution of india : article 75 of constitution says the council of minister shall be collectively responsible to the loksabha , which does not mentions NCM.
2.a NCM can be introduced in loksabha only : as article 75 makes collective responsibility w.r.t loksabha only , there is not power given to rajyasabha about immediate removing govt. of the day so NCM can not introduced in rajyasabha as it amounts to resignation of govt. even if rajyasabha wants to discuss about work of the govt. there are different motions but NCM amounts definitely resignation so that power is not vested in body which is indirectly elected in india.
so answer should have to : C (both 1 and 2)
NCM can be passed in LA(state assembly) as well
what about the NCMs introduced in State Legislative Assemblies???
About the 2nd statement: you are only thinking wrt union govt…so yes, ncm can’t be introduced in Rajya Sabha. but then, NCM can also be introduced in respective state assemblies too. i made the same silly mistake and got it wrong.

actually both statements are correct…the second statement is tricky..they asked if NCM can be initiated in lok sabha only..nd this is wrong in a way that both houses can initiate the motion but it is binding for the govt. to dissolve only when lok sabha ratifies it.. rajya sabha’s initiation of NCM is mere expression of opinion and hence cant be taken as obligatory on the part of govt. to resign..

yes It seems UPSC dont like People who can think after seeing prelims 2014 filled with fact based qn.s and mains 2013 papers . I looks as if they need second class secretaries/typists who can write at lightning speed without doing much analitical work.

Let me explain: in buddhism concept of mahaparinirvana is means ‘GREAT GOING FORTH’ that he leaved his home with chariot channa and horse kanthak , now image at AMRAVATI sows all these things including chariots and horse clearly, but on your image buddha is sleeping so i don’t think that this was image which was mentioned in upsc paper.

I think one cannot predict the cut off because what actually happens is that generally psychological effect of previous year cut off makes us to lead towards that side. For example when 2013 prelims ended people says cutoff would be around 220 to 225 plus it is because in 2012 it was 209 and this year paper(2013) was little easy , but actually was 241.NOW this year some says it will be around 220 plus because both papers changed their courses which previously they followed and so on, it is so because neurons in your mind do not allows you to get down more than 20 marks from previous cut off and if you get lowers it, it will make disturbed your mind- but actually result may be very different(very low or little low) or may be correct also. I will suggest cross the fingers and let starts to prepare for MAINS…
I guess cut off for general would not go beyond 200. Reasons for that are
1. Exam was only of 385 marks
2. Absence of decision making questions which used to contribute 17.5 marks without negative marks and having two options correct. Also time taken was not more than 3-4 mins for these 7 questions. That more or less account to 8-10 marks.
3. Presence of at least 3-4 tricky questions in Maths and Reasoning
4. Average marks for paper 2 last year was 160 around, this year it seems to be around 125, a reduction of 35 marks that ought to mean something.
5. Paper 1 was also quite tough… at least that ought to account for 10 marks at least.

one thing I missed is that the number of vacancies have increased compared to last year. So cutoff should be reduced to make more people qualify in line with vacancies.
Cudnt agree more. Technically speaking this year CSAT was of 185 marks. So scratch those 15 marks from 241 at the first instance. The freebies of compulsory english and decision making which constituted another 15 marks were gone. U had to earn them which was not easy considering the time constraint. Also the general difficulty level of both the papers was observed to be higher. So i feel the cutoff shud fall to 241 – 15 – 5(the marks lost due to freebies of DM removed) – 10 (for paper 1 & 2 owing to higher difficulty) = 211 marks atleast.
I am totally agree, considering tree factor 1`. total marks is 385 in place of 400, 2. decision making question is absent and 3. difficulty level of question is as difficult as 2011. In 2011 cut off was 198 for general, 175 for OBC, 165 for SC and 161 for ST. so this year cut off may be 190 for general, 170 for OBC, 160 for SC and 155 for ST. All the best start preparation for mains.

Thanks so much for giving little hope. I am feeling sad because of my paper 2 performance. English comprehension took so much time and as per CL key I was inaccurate in many places. I hope there must be some hope by mrunals key. However this being my first attempt I will take it as a Learning. Roughly by when can we know the results or at least the cut off?
@ Naveen..cutoff will be in the range of 225-230 for general…215-225 for OBC and 200-215 for SC, 195-200 for ST….those who crossing this range should immediately start preparing for mains…only 105 days left…
