- Candidate already selected in IAS or Indian foreign service (IFS)- not eligible to appear.
| Category | Maximum Age | Attempt |

| Disabled serviceman discharged from duty | 32+3=35 | same as above |
| Ex-serviceman with five years duty* specific condition on page2 of notification | 32+5=37 | same as above |
Above relaxation are cumulative e.g. OBC candidate from J&K = 32 + 3(OBC) + 5 (J&K) = 40 years up age limit.
What doesn’t count as an attempt?
Ans. If you applied in previous exam, but remain absent in BOTH prelim papers, then your attempt is not counted.
Education requirement
- Bachelor’s degree from a university setup under union or state act or ‘deemed university’ under Union Government C.
- Candidates from last semester can apply, provided that they can show proof passing examination in October /November 2015. Because at that time, they’ll be required to fill up a new form for Mains exam (known as DAF form i.e. detailed application form).
- MBBS candidate must finish internship before interview phase.
Physical Standard: Eye, Height, Chest from gazette
This pdf file (click me) has all the answers about eyesight, height, chest, color blindness, lasik surgery etc.
Which jobs reserved for PH?
- 13 for Locomotor + 5 for blind + 11 for hearing impairment = total 29 jobs reserved.
- The ‘physical requirement’ for particular service, are mentioned in first table of the notification. from there you can find out whether your given disability is eligible for IAS / IFS or not?
Multiple applications by same candidate?
- Every time you apply, you get new registration ID (RID). you must preserve RID because you’ll have to quote it again in the Mains application form i.e. DAF form.
- If you applied multiple times (because of computer glitch, fee problem or xyz reason) then when downloading hallticket, you should use higher RID. Because higher RID corresponds to your latest application.
Prelim Papers / CSAT
| Paper 1 | Paper 2 |
|---|---|
| general studies (GS) | aptitude / CSAT |
| Marks counted for selection in mains exam…yes | You need to get only 33% passing marks. i.e. 200 x 0.33 = 66 passing marks required to clear prelims. |
| 200 marks | 200 marks |
| 0.33% negative marking | 0.33% negative marking |
| 20 minutes for blind and locomotors disability | same |
How to prepare for UPSC Prelims?

Sir,
I have appeared in 2011 UPSC-Pre as First Attempt, 2012 as second attempt and then finally 2014 as my Last. I was not eligible due to age for 2013 so did’nt appear that year. I want a clarification if I am eligible for 2015 as there is confusion while filling the UPSC form in Part-1. On submiting the Part-1 form it displays ” Was CSP, 2011 your last attempt as per CSE,2011 Notification :” . I would be if you could clarify urgently so that I can focus on other exams if I am not eligible.
can a ST candidate fill up form in GN categor?
Sir
I’m a beginner and I would like to get some clear guidence from your side…

My 12th certificate has “shree prasad jaiswal” as my father name but mx graducatio marksheet has “s.p. Jaiswal” as my father name . May it create problem for me in the time of verification
for those having doubt about what to write in the name field:
Note 1: Name as recorded in the Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate.
Note 2: Please do not use any prefix such as Mr. or Ms. etc unless it consists of only 3 letters as 4 letters are mandatory for NAME field.
REF: the online application form itself. mentions it below the ‘name’ box.
Mrunal Sir,
Respected Sir,
With the help of your kind guidance I am able to crack West Bengal Civil Service with optional History & Anthropology.
I was not able to score very good marks in optional.
this time I am preparing for CSE-2015.
I am B.E (Mechanical Engineering ).
This time I want to take mechanical engineering as optional.
in UPSC Civil Service Exam (Mains ) optional marks are multiplied by some factor or taken as it is ??
I shall be highly obliged if you kindly clarify.
Yours Faithfully
Mahuya Ghosh
Dear Mrunal Sir,
I have one query on 33% qualifying marks thing. UPSC also mentioned it in bold but one thing which I am not able to understand.
Does it mean that – will the marks scored more over there will not be counted? Is the weightage (67% only on Paper 1) ? In that scenario, we should be focusing more on Paper 1 and should try to score 33% or more for Paper 2.
Please do reply !!!
@praveen_r
No shortcut for upsc.
After pattern change I’m also confused. How to prepare GS more that can give us more benefit? … Better luck next time…
Kal kisne dekha hai bhai. We have to make it this time only, we have 90 days which can make the difference.
Will applying for IFoS count only count as an attempt for Civil also.
As prelims is same for both.
Will attempt in IFoS count as attempt in Civils
, as prelims is common for both
Is my distance education degree (BCA) valid for CSE-2015 from CV raman, Bilaspur- Chhattisgarh……can I appear in examination???? help me plz
Bachelor’s degree from a university setup under union or state act or ‘deemed university’ under Union Government C.
Candidates from last semester can apply, provided that they can show proof passing examination in October /November 2015. Because at that time, they’ll be required to fill up a new form for Mains exam (known as DAF form i.e. detailed application form).
If you fulfill these then you can apply.

@Zoha,
UPSC has rectified the technical problem aroused while filling the application. Its clearly mentioned in the notification also..If you are not eligible for 2015( age or attempt wise), but if you have attempted in 2011…then you are eligible.

2011 attempt.Wat to fill,,,yes/no(attempted in 2011 but eligible still
What should be parameters to choose Optional ?
I called UPSC this morning regarding one additional chance for those who appeared in 2011. However, since I gave exam last year too that was not my last attempt. It was cleared by UPSC official that this years additional attempt is for only those candidates, who gave their last attempt in 2011. So I am not eligible for this year’s additional attempt. Feeling heartbroken.
@Gyan,
You are eligible Gyan. ‘All those who appeared in 2011 but otherwise not eligible in 2015’ are eligible to give exam this year. Its clearly mentioned in the statement given by Govt. of India on 22/08/2014 in the Parliament, as well as in the UPSC Notification, 2015. The technical problem which aroused during the registration of part-1 is rectified by the UPSC.
Will attempt in IFos prelims count as an attempt for civil services as prelims for both is same
i have business statistics in graduation as a one subject..(b.com) so, may i eligible for IFS
@praveen_r
Yeah you’re right. But I have spent almost 6 months for CSAT so that if GS paper is difficult, I can crack prelim easily coz of CSAT.
Now what!
There are some people who can score 100+ in GS.
Moreover…
90 days can make difference but for a fresher like me… 6 months of preparation is nothing when compared to those serious players who have spent 1-2 years…
By the way…
We are going to be a civil servant then we have to be prepared for such sudden changes… :-)
So,
Let’s try our best in 90 days…
All the best yaar…
Mrunal bhai, pls give gyan/motivation to 1st timers like us. We are feeling less competent/underprivileged vis-a-vis senior players.
