After prelim-2013 I had published answer keys myself, but was unable to locate exact reference to some of the MCQs. So, let’s check what UPSC answer key has to say..
Decision making
| Question number (Booklet A) | UPSC official answerkey |
|---|---|
| 75. House-allotment to personal Secretary |
|
| 76. Delhi taxi driver paying bribe to transport office. Should you turn blind eye? |
|
| 77. poor man came to complain collector, but collector busy |

| 78. sugar quota order vs friend’s wedding |
|
| 79. How to communicate to junta to adopt family planning? |
|
| 80. collegue asking you to leak university paper for his ‘last attempt’ son. |
|
My own answerkey (under CSAT strategy article) matches with UPSC’s. Just slight difference in just one single question: family planning communication:
- UPSC says A or C
- I had taken A or D
In short, by and large, Mrunal’s EBDTM (eliminate bad decision) technique works. Click to learn the technique on how to eliminate wrong decision.
Anyways, let’s move on, some GS MCQs that had debatable answers due to lack of clear cut reference. In all of the following questions, I’m using Question booklet A.

| Friction is independent of surface area of contact (Pearson Objective Physics For AIEEE page 77) hence I took D as the answer. | C. |
^these are few of the debatable questions I can recall. Afterall ~1 year has passed. Had UPSC released answer key just after prelims, we could analyze it better. now lot of the details have evaporated from head. Anyways, here are the links to my old answerkey on CSAT-2013 (GS), in case there are any more errors let me know (post in this present article’s comment section).

Hi Sir, in the question no 88.. they are talking about “effective area of contact” not the “area of contact” (generally means total area)…friction is free from contact of area but it depend on the effective area of contact…btw sir you are doing a great job so thank you and god bless you.
mrunal sir….plz publish one interview details with a person who started prepare for civil service exams very late and still cracked (i mean after the age of 30)….i didnt see such an interview….may be many of the old players would be thankful if u publish such an interview…..
Question 1: This question is regarding Paper 2 of civil services Prelims. According to answer key of UPSC, does it mean that any aspirant who marks either of the two options (for questions 75 to 80) mentioned in the answer key will get the same marks i.e. 2.5 ?
Question 2: Will the recent Maratha Reservation of Maharashtra Government will apply to UPSC as well ?
Mrunal Sir, Please reply to the question number 1 atleast…..

Mrunal ..upsc answer to question no 41 is totally wrong ….god knows how they came up with A as the right option
Sir, in decision making questions, will they marks on both correct option

Sir my question is that my earlier applied form n centre will be there na so i can download the Delhi centre hall ticket when upsc uploads so i can come back from bang to delhi & write the exam.(since Delhi centre is also exhausted so i cant apply once again and I left with no option )

thnxx mrunal sir
In Mains examination , how do they check if the answer is within word limit? Does it depand on a rough guess by the examiner.
Hi,
one query regarding question 75-80 i have following answer
My Answer
75-a
76-c
77-d
78-c
79-d
80-c
request u please tell how upsc will evaluate as i have 240 and cutoff is 241
hello Mrunal,
for the 87th question in paper 1 (2013), should’nt the answer be D. According to your source, Gharial and leather back turtle are critically endangered species, where as the question is on whether the species listed is endangered or not. kindly clarify.
The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly (e.g., a hub or shaft). As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well. Because the balls are rolling they have a much lower coefficient of friction than if two flat surfaces were sliding against each other.
Mrunal sir, with upsc keys i m getting 222.66( obc cutoff 222), but upsc marksheet shows my marks as 220, so what can be done now, also pls reply if i ask upsc to provide me copy of my omr under RTI , will they send it to me ?
Sir, can you provide the focus area for history and geography with reference as you did in CSAT Strategy. It will be very helpful as UPSC is asking very different type of questions.
PLEASE HELP ME FOR GDP IMPORTANCE
Hi Mrunal,
This is regarding the Ball Bearing question:
When I was preparing for IIT JEE my mentor(a very successful one) taught me that always apply common sense before using any of tricks in mechanics books. I recommend this approach to all as it has worked out pretty well for me.
Coming to the question, the first thing you need to ask is that if friction is independent of area then what is the relevance of Wheels. If the amount of friction is going to be same on a load then what makes the wheels so useful in our daily lives? The way you used that line from AIEEE book in isolation is how many students attempted IIT JEE and messed it up. I can prove the UPSC answer by basic physics but that is not what UPSC is expects from us.
Hi Mrunal,
Thanks for excellent work that you are doing for all the aspiring student of UPSC. I have a question regarding 75-80(Paper-II CSAT 2013)..As per answer key given by upsc, it suggest there are multiple answer for these 6 question, but as per instruction in question paper, there should be only one answer to be selected, so in that case why upsc giving multiple answer for the same question.
thanx 4 ur valuable and precious articles….m very weak in economics….plz help me to overcome my weakness sir….i dnt feel lyk studying it even for 1/2 an hour in a day….
UPSC makes the answer keys almost useless because of one year time delay.
in Q no. 41
choice C seems to be correct
37. Which one of the following describes best the concept of Nirvana in Buddhism?
answer A is correct as per ncert 6th class social studies…. our past….chapter 6 or 7th….buddha says ……give up your desires you will get mukti…..desire is curse of all things…
friction depends on area of contact
Sir, UPSC considers “Critically Endangered” as “Endangered” ? Since Turtle and Gharial are “Critically Endangered” but answer key shows 1,2,3 are correct.
total value of goods n services is gdp….national income=GDP -NET INDIRECT TAXES(INDIRECT TAXES – GDP)….I GUESS this has been called final money value of goods n services…..jus read ds in ncert….thot might help :)
HIII neha can i get ur no plzz i want some advice from u….if yes then call me +918000130011
oh sorry…..nat income = gdp – net indirect taxes
=gdp- (indirect taxes -subsidy*)
by mistake wrote gdp
For question no.41 UPSC answer(A) is correct. BOP in accounting and broader sense refers to export and import of ALL transaction.(including goods, service, capital etc..ie all remittance and receipt )
Balance of Trade is the export and import of GOODS ONLY…
not able to dwnlod ncert history.what to do now!!!!!
Regarding Q23. Productivity is never absolute, nor cumulative. Productivity is always a rate. Please correct that. :)
Regarding Q 99. It can never be A. Its not the total value, we have to minus the subsidy etc! so, D is right! It is the ‘money’ value of goods and services! the word ‘final’ makes all difference!! because, we need to minus the intermediaries from the ‘total’!! :)
please do note them! Thank you. :)
